Awesome Advanced Satellites!
Ok, i might be incredibly slow so go ahead and laugh at me if you all already are aware of this.
At first i thought the camera on adv satellites were ment to be used to make factory positioning easier (and neater) and also to easily check that the docking clamps of the complex hub is facing in the right direction without having to fly there.
But o and behold, i have seen the light!
I placed one of these babies in a 150km sector out of boredom and noticed four dark spots on the map, it was solar power plants faaaaar off the ecliptic! The nav camera obviously has infinite range.
Pop one of these in a xenon sector and youll see every single ship and station. Put it in a Unknown sector and give it a glance and you might even see a dark spot somewhere which means a free ship!
Now im always carrying a single satellite, throwing it out when i enter a interesting sector, checking the map alittle, then picking it up again and continue my journey.
Now you can laugh, at least im happy with my little "discovery" ^^
Note: only works to see small ships if they are 20km'ish above the ecliptic, otherwise they are smaller than a pixel >.<

I think it was jlehtone who dropped that gem in a thread I was reading a month or two back. Very useful and not something I'd thought about before

I knew about the Adv Sat's unlimited range but I never thought of using it this way. I'm definitely going to try this next time I play.

This works only if you're in the same sector as your adv sat. Press 'K' while in the sector map. Or you can press the camera button next to the zoom buttons.

Im with you! Camera on satelites??? I have an Adv-sat in nearly all sectors but i never new it had a camera!!Omini wrote:You think YOU'RE slow? I haven't even figured out how to turn the cameras on... didn't even know they had cameras
Can someone post how to work it?
@Technojerk36 i dont understand what you mean
press the camera button next to the zoom buttons
Trade - Fight - Build - Think - Guess Randomly...
When looking at the sector map, press "k". It has to be the sector you are in and also (obviously) has to have an adv sat in there.
"k" is the default button anyway. There is also the icon Technojerk36 referred to - I think it's in the top right corner, but could be wrong (don't use that, I just press the key).

You mean, besides having a 35 km scanner radius as opposed to 22.5?
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

I proudly present:
Advanced Satellites for Dummies!
The advantages:
The Adv Sat has a larger scanner range and the camera function.
The disadvantages:
It's more expensive than a regular Sat.
How to activate the camera function:
This is the sector map when there is no Adv Sat in the sector.
[ external image ]
Notice how the camera button is grayed out?
Now this is the sector map with a Adv Sat in the sector.
[ external image ]
Notice how the camera button is no longer grayed out?
This is the sector map after clicking the camera button or pressing "K".
[ external image ]
See how the map has gotten a live overlay (or is it an underlay ) of the sector? You can only really see 'roids at this zoom level but if you zoom in you will notice the stations and ships.
Now that you know how to use Adv Sats, go find that Aran!
