The Lucky Seven
Chapter 1 Lucky Seven
Bob was a young man with a heavy burden on his shoulders. His life time goal was to kill the man that had destroyed his family and killed his dad. The courts had found him innocent in his fathers death saying it was self defense. But Bob had seen it all as he watched from his room.
His Mother had left his Father for a good looking sweet talking gambler that had turned out to be a wife beater. Bobs father had had several heated arguments with the Gambler before but this time when he came to pick up Bob his Mother asked him to take her with him she wanted to leave the Gambler.
The Gambler came in on the middle of her escape and a fight started a pistol was pulled and when it was over the Gambler stood over the bodies of Bobs parents.
Bob could still remember seeing the Gambler as he headed for his room with his pistol in his hand and a stern look on his face.
Then a flash and the Gambler stumbled and turned around as his dieing Father and the Gambler shot each other. The Gambler claimed self defense and with his high priced lawyers were finished the Gambler was free. Bob was sent to a home where he grew up with one thing on his mind finding the Man that killed his Parents and making him pay.
Bob had planned a hundred different ways in his mind on what he would do to the Man when he found him and after months of just missing him there he was at a table in a lounge playing cards.
Bob looked around his hand shook as the anger turned into a rage until he made his move. Bob went right for the Gambler and picked up a bottle as he passed by a table and smashed it on the side of the Gamblers head.
Bob felt the warm blood spatter him on the face and booze on his hand as the Gambler went crashing to the floor as he stood for a second before he felt his whole body explode in pain before passing out.
Bob woke up in a detention cell with restraints on.
A Guard walked up to the cell. “Boy why did you hit that man with that bottle you about killed him. But lucky for you he pulled through!”
Bob didn’t want to be in jail but he showed disappointment all over his face when the Guard said the Gambler was still alive the Guard asked. “What did that Man do to you boy!”
Bob looked up at the Guard. “What do you care people like him can do what they want as lone as he has the cash to buy his way out of trouble!”
The Guard turned and walked away only to return a few hours later. “I got your file here young Man. Says here you been in and out of trouble a lot when you were growing up but just small time what made you decide to move up to attempted murder? Say here the man you popped with that bottle was cleared of all the charges concerning your parents.”
Bob spoke up. “Sure that’s what it says but its not what happened he killed My parents! I seen the whole thing myself but I was only four year sold so I couldn’t testify his high priced lawyers seen to that. He killed my parents and was going to kill me but My Dad shot him as he headed for my room to kill me as I stood in the doorway to my bedroom watching the whole thing.”
The Guard looked over the papers. “That’s a good story Bob and you sound like you really believe what your saying but he was cleared of all charges and you just tried to kill a Man on my Station and that’s all I got to go on. Your story doesn’t change the fact you just tried to kill a man. I suggest you get yourself a good lawyer now you’re going to need one.”
The Guard left the cell as Bob set thinking how stupid he was to just walk into a crowded room and smash that bottle into the Gamblers head. He could have waited and planed it out better and the Gambler would be dead now.
The next day Bob woke up to see the Gambler setting on the other side of the bars. “Bob we need to talk.” The Gambler looked up at the Guard. “Officer can I talk to Bob in privet I owe him that much.”
The Guard turned and went off to the side of the room where he could watch everything.
The Gambler stared at Bob. “Bob I’m sorry for all the trouble I caused you and I deserve to be dead I know that but you’re not going to kill me. I’m already a dead Man Bob the doctors say I only have a few more months to live at the most and there’s nothing they can do about it.”
Bob gritted his teeth as he looked at the frail old Man he tried to kill earlier. “If you’re looking for sympathy from me you’re wasting your time! I wished I had killed you myself. At least I’d fill better!”
The Gambler looked down at the floor as a tear run down his cheek. “I got nothing for you Bob no excuse just a I’m sorry for what I done. I’m glad you didn’t kill me or I would had ruined your life in my death. I gave the Guard the only thing I have to give you. It’s from your mother she gave me a lucky token and for some reason it works and I’ve keep it all these years. She said it was her Dads I was going to sent it to you when I died. I’m going away to die in a place where no one can find me so don’t bother. Don’t end up like me Bob. I’m not pressing charges and have talked them into letting you go after I’m gone it’s all I can do goodbye Bob I‘m Sorry.”
Bob watched as the Gambler eased over to a wheel chair and rolled out of the section Bob was in.
The Guard came back later and handed Bob the token. “Here Mr. Fisher this is yours. I heard the whole thing and I believe your story now. He did pay your fine but you still have a day to serve on your disorderly conduct charge so he will be gone when you get out. But I did check with the Doctor after hearing what he said that sounded like a confession to me he is dieing. The Goners are taking him to a secret place they call a ascension mission.”
A few hours later alarms went off all over the Station as the whole station shook. The lights went off and the safety light switched on Bob was really scared as the safety lights flashed as the whole Station shook again.
The Guard run into the room and opened the door to Bobs cell. “Get out and on a lifeboat we’re under attack you free GO NOW!” The Station shook again but this time it was more violent as the hall sounded like something had just exploded as the Station moved under their feet.
Bob run for the exit and made his way to the lifeboats. He watched as Security pushed people into each one and ejected them into space. Bob watched as the Gambler got pushed into a lifeboat and ejected into space. Bob watched as the purple streaks of light covered the life boat the Gambler was on then the Com came to life as the people started screaming that were on the lifeboats as the Kha’ak ships opened fire on the lifeboats.
Bob watched as the Gamblers lifeboat exploded in a ball of light and at that instance all the anger and wants for revenge were gone being replaced by a stronger emotion fear. Bob feared for his life running away from the area not wanting to be but in a lifeboat and sure death. He run for the docking bay but the whole area was closed off. Back to the lifeboat area to chance a escape but it was sealed off as the whole area had come under fire and was in open space.
The Station rocked and moaned as Bob heard small leaks popping up all around him. He had his suit on but what good was it when the station exploded and if he did survive the Kha’ak were shooting anything with life signs this was it he thought as he stood waiting on death so scared he just stiffened up waiting on the final blast he knew was coming.
Bob felt a hand grab a hold of him. “Come with me if you want to live.” The voice said as Bob raced behind the man as they ran inside a bank and into a vault. Someone closed the door as they ran inside and in that instant the Station shook violently and then the blast that slammed him back into the wall knocking him out.
Bob came too for a second as he felt himself floating inside the vault. Bob opened his eyes to look around but all he seen was total darkness. His head hurt so bad to just open his eyes and his body hurt all over Bob closed his eyes as he passed out thinking it’s all over now.
Bob could hear a voice. “He’s coming around Doctor!”
Bob could see a bright light and thought this is the bright light he had heard people see when they die. But as his eyes cleared a little a face came into view looking down at him. It was a nurse. “Can you tell us your name?”
Bob tried to focus on the face of the nurse. “My name is Bob.”
The nurse smiled. “Tell me your first and last name and how you got off the station if you can please.”
Bob told his name and how the man had came lead him into the vault.
The nurse stopped him. “That’s good you had a serious head injury and concussion. We’re going to keep you here to watch you vitals for a few more hours to make sure you’re alright and if you do alright we’ll let you go.”
Bob stopped the Nurse. “How many people made it out alive?”
The Nurse stopped and with a troubled voice replied. “Not many. Yours qroup was one of the lucky ones to make it out alive. The news called you group the lucky seven.”
Bob was about to be released when a man in a wheel chair rolled into his room with a young woman pushing the chair. Bob looked at the Man and then he remembered it was the man who took him into the vault. His arm and leg was broke and in a cast.
The man spoke up. “Robert do you rember me?”
[Bob] “Yes sir you’re the one that pulled me into the vault. And please call me Bob.”
“That’s right Bob. I worked at that bank office. But that’s not why I’m here this is my Daughter Bob and I need your help. You have a basic pilots license and I need a pilot to fly my Disco for me while I ride along.”
Bob shook his head. “I don’t know I’m not a good pilot Sir.”
The Man looked Bob strait in the eyes. “Bob I’ll make it worth your while. I looked over your record your broke, homeless and without a job. I’ll give you two thousand credits just to fly me back out to the station and help me find something that’s very precious to me and my family.”
Bob may have been broke but he wasn’t nobodys patsy. “Precious enough if we find it you give me the ship and two thousand.” Bob watched as the daughter grabbed her Dads good arm.
The Man never blinked an eye as he looked at Bob and said. “When we find it. The ship and two thousand are yours but you never come back here, talk about or contact me again understand!”
Bob smiled. “Yes Sir I understand completely and It’s not a problem.”
The Banker looked at Bob still just as smooth and calm as before and said. “I’ll be waiting for you on the ship look for my daughter she’ll be watching for you. They’re about to release you so hurry the deal is only good for a little while I will hire someone else if I have too!”
The Man rolled off with the girl looking back at Bob with a very distressing look. Bob thought to himself what if it was something like a family keepsake only important to them. Well if it was Bob thought he could always just take the credits and go on he did save his life but if it was what he thought it was. Some kind of treasure hunt for the big score he knew was out there the ship and credits were his.
The Nurse walked in with Bobs things and a paper for him to sign it was time to go. His spacesuit was still staned with the blood from the head wound he got in the blast. Bob put his cloths on and tried to wipe the blood out of his helmet as best he could as he made his way to the docks. Bob reached into his pocket and felt the token the Gambler had given him remembering how he said it had always brought him good luck. Bob slipped the token back into his pocked and smiled as he seen the Daughter waiving at him.
She took Bob to a Disco Hauler setting ready to go. Bob strapped in and run the flight check and eased out of the station. “Alright where to Boss?”
The man looked into the cockpit from his seat. “One sector over back to area around the Trading Station we’re looking for a Buster heres the ID codes for it.”
Bob looked back at the Man. “And just to be clear we’re not looking for family keep sakes are we?”
The Man shook his head. “You know we’re not. Just find the ship or whats left of it then I tell what to look for!”
When they entered the sector security had placed a boundary marker around the station putting it off limits.
But the Station wasn’t the target Bob scanned for any sign of the ship as he headed in the direction of the Station but no ship. They came around the other side and headed for the other Gate still no Buster.
A frown came across the face of the Banker as he set in his chair and took a pain pill and said. “Search the sector it’s here somewhere I know it! It has to be!”
Debris was everywhere in the sector so Bob plotted a search pattern to work from and started with the closest to the station. Four hours later they found what was left of the ship. The Banker smiled as he looked out at the remains of the Buster and said. “It serves him right he just left us there to die!”
After a little questioning the Banker told Bob the Manager had run to get his Buster. While the Banker opened the vault and pulled out the unmarked cases of tokens to be transported over to the Buster with him and his family. But the only thing that got transported when the shields dropped on the station was the tokens. The Manager had left them there to die.
The Banker smiled again as he looked out at the remains of the ship and said. “If he had transported us over we’d be dead too. Narrow the scan for small contaners with traces of gold.”
Bob started the scan and found one. Bob eased the ship over to the crate and picked it up and said. “I got it lets go now!”
[Banker] “Hold on they were two cases keep looking till you find it and I’ll make it five thousand credits and the ship.”
[Bob] “If we get cought with this in our hole we’ll all go to jail take what we got and be happy!”
[Banker] “No keep looking I’ll buy you a new Disco Hauler and max it out plus five thousand credits!”
Bob pulled the ship around and started searching the area and said. “We better not loose this because of you! It’s my neck on the line out here too you know!”
[Banker] “Yah yah I know just keep looking it’s here! Besides I‘m the one that has to be careful the Bank owners will be watching me like a hawk! You’re the one getting away with the easy payday keep looking!”
Bob was about to cut and run when he seen a Sector Security ship headed their way as he spotted the last case. Bob knew he couldn’t out run them in the Hauler the Banker had only upgraded it half way so they stayed put and held their breath as there eyes were fixed on the HUD watching the Security ship until it turned away and headed the other way.
[Banker] “Get the last case hurry before he comes back and take us to this station and don‘t stop for anything!”
Bob scopped up the last case and set course for the station two sectors over. Sector security was busy trying to keep ships back away and out of the restricted area so getting out of the sector was easy as Bob went through the Gate unchecked.
The next sector was a different story as the ship cleared the Gate and pulled away just missing getting scanned as Security had a freighter held up at the Gate to do a closer scan.
Bob headed for the next Gate watching the HUD all the way wondering how they were going to get through two more check points and across half a sector to the station without getting caught.
The ship was about at the Gate when a ship came flying through and made a run for open space security around the Gate was hot on his tail leaving the Gate wide open.
Bob eased the ship through thinking he was going to be the next one caught and locked up but as the backwash cleared Sector Security wasn’t there. Bob set course for the station wondering were they really going to make it as he looked at the HUD. No Security ships in sight just open space between them and the station.
Bob didn’t realize how teanse he was until they docked and he stood up and wondered if he would make it to the bathroom or not he had to go so bad.
When Bob came out of the little restroom the Banker smiled saying. “We made it I owe a ship and some credits.”
Bob looked at the Banker. “No I’ve had enough I want to get out of here now just pay me for the upgrades and my five thousand and I’ll take this ship buy yourself a new one I want to leave.”
[Banker] “I can’t do that Bob I’ll give you the credits to buy one youself! Remember I’m being watched! Just calm down we made it no Security Guards are rushing us with guns we’re in the clear just stay onboard with us and wait. I’ll give you your cut and a new ship just like we agreed on.”
While the Banker was talking to someone outside the ship Bob looked over at the girl who was hidding her face in her hands and asked. “Are you allright?”
Without ever looking up she replied. “Don’t talk to me we got nothing to say to each other. The quicker your gone and this is over the better I‘ll like it. Bob!”
Bob went back to the cockpit and set down thinking so much for trying to be nice. The Girl was defiantly having a bad day seeing a different side of her father she had never seen before and didn’t like it but was along for the ride anyway. Salvaging goods from space wasn’t a crime it was how they got there that was.
Bob set back and tried to relax his part was over with now he had to wait.
