Just a small off topic idea to this (as I've pretty much given up on making it in the X3 engine, pending lots of other scripts and mods I'm making...)


Butt... what if another engine is used, concurrent with the X3 engine (e.g. You get alt tabed out to fight in first person mode). e.g. As the UT3 engine just went open source~ish. (Note, UT3 is multi cored and X3 isn't, so hopefully the two will work together ok~)

Just an idea that I thought was worth mentioning in case anyone has ut3 experience (or can learn)

It *might* be doable, but you'd need to find a way for the script editor to signal an outside program to run the alt-tab and UT3. Write to log file may work, I don't know enough about that sort of thing to say...

this might be possible but without graphics (or sector view, w/e) anyway, you get a message console, like in those old RPG games, and you can choose to
-attack
-take cover
-use special weapon(s) of your team
-cancel boarding and bail from the ship.

This would go through 3 tiers, depending what you want to reach. You could choose the following:
-Hangar (you can take control over the docked ships here and undock them)
-Shield Generator (if it gets destroyed, the ship will be shieldless, higher chance to bail the crew)
-Core (if this gets destroyed, the ship will instantly explode [bad idea anyway])
-Bridge (reach it, and make the captain surrender -> Take control over the whole ship
^^^you could chose the above after reaching the ship's inside^^^

Also, if you dont wish to go over this, then you could also choose auto-boarding, and that would activate the vanilla boarding with sounds then.

w.r.t The alt-tabbing:
(and general information passing.. parsing?) I was just going to use tfile/logfiles. I'm already doing that with my voice thingy so its not such a big thing.

@ repatomonor
I though about such things (As I have played MUD's before so I'm partial to the idea of GFX less systems) but the problem is... where is the game play element - and- is it fun /adds something to the game. The additions are clearly the subsystem targeting (and my SS scripts are not finished yet), and the gameplay element is choosing what you can do but... can you honestly say it will be interesting/fun ?

Interesting/fun would be if we get an FPS mode, and board the capitals like you do in Battlefield 2142 [not in this life lol]. That would be fun. Otherwise, nonsense, but what's the point of this topic then?
