Sherry’s Rescue
Chapter 20
Josh had Sam working on the transporter onboard the Tempest and Josh was headed to the briefing room where the assault and rescue teams waiting on him.
Josh entered the room as everyone stood up to attention. “At ease everyone please set down. [Josh replied] I have come to ask for volunteers to join me on a dangerous mission to rescue a group of people that will die if we don’t respond. Let me explain the conditions of the mission then I’ll give you a moment to decide.”
Josh explained in great detail the dangers of the mission and explained he was going if he had to go alone. Josh asked that anyone willing to join with him should follow him out into the lobby giving them five minutes to decide then he was going to leave. Josh turned and went out into the lobby and stood waiting.
Josh looked at his watch as one minute passed then two then three. Josh was thinking he was about to go it all alone when one of the officers stepped out. “Commander we want you to come back in there is not enough room for all of use out here, we are all willing to go with you.”
Josh went back into the room to see his best team standing in front. “Sir we are ready to go when you are.”
Josh saluted as he looked at the group and with pride he stated. “You have made me proud to have been able to serve with such a fine group thank you.”
Josh looked at the team. “We need to load up and leave are you all ready?”
A quick and determined. “Yes Sir!” Was their reply as they left the room heading out behind Josh.
Each man picked up his suit and gear and headed for the docking bay where a special bag was ready for each one. Each bag had a small control unit and two spiders in it with survival gear for the extreme cold.
The five man team gave them a better chance to save everyone. Josh his team and a package with a large tent and supplies could be sent now.
The Tempest cloaked and jumped to open space. They all stepped onto the transporter pad and jumped.
Instantly they started to fall each looking for the crash sight. Josh was linked to the container with the big tent and supplies in it and he needed to get it as close to the crash sight as he could. The crash was spotted as the team opened their shoots. The team glided down to the near the crash site as Josh rushed over looking for Sherry till he found the Pilot. “You had a woman with you Sherry where is she?”
[Pilot] “She took of up that way to place a rescue beacon on higher ground.”
Josh looked around with his binoculars and spotted a light flashing and her a long ways up the ridge.
It was already starting to get dark and cold she was at least a hour away.
Josh grabbed a extra suit and his pack hopping to make it to her before she froze to death.
Orders were given to the team to finish their mission and save the people at the crash sight build a ship, cloak and jump away to the rendezvous point and wait two hours then move on to next sector and safety then contact Captain Mitchell on Hagion and let him take the people to Ban Danna with the data about Sherry’s Ex.
Josh took off in a run headed for Sherry while the team was getting everything ready there.
Josh raced up the long clime knowing if he didn’t make it to her before dark she would be dead.
The temperature was already below freezing when Josh reached Sherry shaking trying to cover her head from the cold next to the beacon. “Here put this on before you freeze.”
[Sherry] “I can’t believe it’s you.” As she smiled and said. “I hurt my foot and can’t walk so I stayed here.”
Josh gave her a stem shot in the leg soldiers use when their wounded to dull the pain and boost their system. “Hurry and get it on I’ll carry you. I passed a spot down the ridge that would be a good place to set the tent up we’ll never make it back to the rescue sight before dark and if we don’t get into some shelter quick we’ll die.”
The wind was starting to get strong as the temperature dropped along with it. Josh reached the mound he had seen earlier knowing it would help shield them from the wind that was so strong now it was about to blow them away.
Josh drove the spikes into the now frozen ground and set the small shelter up. Snow was already plowing everywhere and the carbon dioxide in the upper atmosphere was starting to fall down onto the surface.
Josh Helped Sherry into the tent like shelter and closed it up.
The suits were made to handle the cold but the outside temperature was dropping fast and they were starting to fill the cold.
Josh pulled a small heater and sleeping bag from his pack. They rapped up with the sleeping bag as best they could while they huddled by the heater trying to capture as much of the heat as they could without getting burnt.
[Josh] “As soon as the snow covers us up I can turn on a small shield and it’ll warm up in here.”
The light was gone and darkness filled the tent as the snow covered the small shelter up and Josh turned on a small light and looked at his scanner. A small layer of ice covered the tent and the snow had covered the tent and it was getting deeper every minute. Josh turned the shield on watched as the temperature started to rise until it was above freezing then he turned on a air supply for the shelter. Josh watched the scanner as the unit started filling the shelter up with breathable air.
Sherry watched knowing that the pain in her foot would be returning in a little while and she didn’t want to be in that suit when it did. “Josh are we going to make it?”
Josh looked back smiling. “Sherry we’ll be fine. We’re going to a brand new world when we leave here.”
Josh was talking about Hagion but Sherry thought he was talking about dieing and going to Heaven.
[Sherry] “Josh why did you come?”
Josh looked a little confused as he looked at Sherry. “I love you Sherry I had to come.”
The air reached a safe level as Sherry looked at Josh while he pulled the suit off and laid the sleeping bag on the ground saying. “Sherry take the suit off and lay down so I can look at your foot.”
Josh was helping Sherry take her suit off when she kissed him and replied. “I never thought of you helping me take my clothes off to look at my foot.”
Josh just laughed as he scanned the foot again and pulled out another shot. Josh kissed Sherry as he held the shot in his hand and popped it into her leg.
[Sherry] “Ouch what was that for!?”
[Josh] “That was a shot for the pain and to make you rest. It also has nanobots to help repair the damaged tissue. You’ll sleep for about eight hours and when you wake up your food will be fine.”
[Sherry] “You should have asked before you just shot me up with little robots!”
[Josh] “I sorry Sherry do you want to lay here in pain?”
[Sherry] “No smarty but you should have asked.”
[Josh] “I’ll make it up to you.”
[Sherry] “I know you will!”
Josh reached over and kissed Sherry and caressed the side of her face with his hand. “It’s so good to see you again Sherry! Get some rest I’ll tell you everything when you wake up.”
The shot had a fast boost that was already making her drowsy as Josh set beside her holding her hand. Her eyes started getting that heavy look like they were hard to hold open then she was out.
[Josh] “Sam start building extra spiders till there is enough cover to start a ship.”
Josh took the spiders from the bag and placed them near the wall and watched as the spiders worked making a extra large unit and just as it was finished Sam replied. “I can start building the ship now Commander. I can make a scout or medium class ship with the extra spider.”
[Josh] “Make the scout I want to get out of this tent.”
[Sam] “I can make a medium class and finish the hull, living quarters and shields so you can board it faster than the scout. I would have to finish the scout before you could enter it.”
[Josh] “Build the medium then how long?”
[Sam] “You can enter the ship in fourteen hours. Commander do you want to start calling me Sarah?”
Josh thought for a few minutes. “No lets just leave it as Sam for now it’s complicated enough as it is now when we get to Hagion ask me again.”
Josh curled up beside Sherry holding her and covered up to get some rest himself. Josh lay their thinking of how good she felt as he held her realizing how much he had missed Sherry. Josh felt like a part of him had just been returned and he wasn’t going to loose it again.
A few hours later when Josh woke up he scanned the area. The ship was well on the way as the spiders worked to finish the hull and get a larger shield and power unit running in the work area. The spiders were using a small shield much like the one around the small shelter Josh and Sherry was in. A ice bubble formed around the shield helping to protect the work area from the weight of the snow as it got deeper. The shields were well within the safety range of the maximum depth of the snow but the stronger shield would make him fill a lot safer when it was running and they were inside the hull of the fighter.
Josh scanned Sherry’s foot and it was about healed. Josh pulled the backpack over to him and started pulling out a stand to go over the top of the heater to warm up food and drinks on. It was a primitive way of cooking by modern standards but very effective. Besides it was hard to fit a food replicating unit and power supply into a backpack.
Josh found a small pack of instant coffee and a power bar. The smell of the coffee filled the tint as the water warmed to a simmer. Josh pulled the pot off and poured some in a cup.
[Sherry] “Is that coffee I smell?”
Josh handed her his cup. Sherry took a sip and twisted her foot around. “My foot fills fine that shot worked. Lay down here with me and hold me a while.”
Josh poured the coffee back into the water container sealed it back up in the backpack with the half eaten power bar and set it aside with the heater and laid down with Sherry.
Sherry started running her fingers through Josh’s hair. “I thought I’d never see you again Josh you sent us a message saying you were traped in past and wanted me to move on what happened?”
Josh tried to give the short and to the point story but Sherry had other plans as she proceeded to kiss and carress Josh until they were in each others arms. As the two slowed down and laid in each others arms a tear run down Sherry’s cheek. Josh wiped away the tear asking. “What’s wrong we’ll be leaving soon.”
Sherry started crying. “Josh why did you come here you could have stayed where you were.”
[Josh] “I love you I had to come.” Sherry cryed a little harder. “I never wanted you to die with me!”
[Josh] “Hold on Sherry we’re not going to die! Why do think we’re going to die?”
Sherry tried to calm down. “You said we were going to a new world when we leave here I thought you were talking about dying.”
Josh under stood then. “No when we leave here I’m taking you to Hagion, a planet my people have settled.”
Sherry looked a little puzzled at the statement. “Hagion and your people? What do you mean you have a planet and a race of people?”
Josh started telling Sherry the story again and this time he had here undivided attention as he got the coffee back out and poured them a cup.
After a few hours of catching up and many questions Josh finished up with. “And here I am.” Then he kissed Sherry.
Sherry started looking a little like she was in pain again then said. “Josh I got to go to the bathroom what do I do?”
Josh laughed as he pulled a small folding seat with a bag in the middle of it out of his bag. “You use this.”
Josh turned his back to Sherry as she used the little potty. “Josh how are we getting of this planet is a ship coming for us?” Sherry asked trying to get past the embarrassment of having to use that little potty in the same tent with Josh.
Josh looked at his PDA. “In two more hours a ship right outside this tent will be finished enough for us to move into the cabin. And about twelve hours after that it will be ready to go but then we have to wait on the ion storm to pass by before we can leave. We’ll cloak the ship and jump to space and join up with the others then jump out to a safe sector. I’ll contact Hagion for a capitol ship to pick us up and it will be all over then.”
Sherry looked at Josh like she wanted to say something but didn’t. Then she laid her head on his shoulder and held him.
While Josh was showing Sherry the ship on the other side of the tent Sherry asked. “Josh what about my Ex is he going to get away with this? He played me and when the time was right for him he turned into a different person and I got to see the real man he was.
Three people died in the crash can you prove it was him?”
[Josh] “I have all the information here I’ll send it to Ban Danna he’ll take care of him. I been declared dead, I’ll have to prove I’m Josh Galen first then be reinstated before I have any rights.”
Sam informed Josh the ship ready for them to go into. Josh gathered all his thingh up and turned off the small shield last as he pealed the tint away from the ice bubble that covered the tent and climbed into the ship.
Sherry looked at the spiders as they made their way into the cabin. “Josh what were the big spider looking things doing?”
[Josh] “They’re building the ship. We’ll have to put our suits on in a few minutes to pressure test the hull for leaks.”
[Sherry] “Is this ship safe?”
[Josh] “Of course it’s safe but we still need to test it. These are unusual conditions and it’s better to be safe that sorry.”
The test showed the hull was solid and the rest of the ship construction went fast as Sherry played catch up with Josh. Now they had the comfort of a ship to rest in when they laid down the last time before the jump out. Josh was a little uneasy about the next steep of their mission a Xenon Destroyer was still in orbit above them just waiting on the chance to scan the area and bomb anything it seen. Josh laid down his team was well trained and they were at least 400 feet or more away from the crash site.
The Xenon would wait on a clean shot so they wouldn’t waste ammo and they were planning on being gone before that.
The ship was finished and ready to go. Josh sent the little drone up with the camera. They waited as the drone moved ever closer to the surface of the snow until it broke through. One good picture was all they needed to spot a clear jumpsite. The picture came across the screen the ship raised up off the ground and the cloak turned on. The jump drive charged a second picture came in it was clear as the ship jumped.
Josh looked out into open space. “Sherry open your eyes we made it! Now we move into position and wait.”
Josh headed for open space and into position and scanned the area no ship. Josh turned a monitor on the destroyer as it hung over the crash site like it was tied to the planet.
Josh poured himself a cup of coffee and set looking at the monitor as Sam said. “I detect a ship it’s the rescue team.”
Josh opened the close range com. “Glade to see you is all well?”
[Ship] “Yes Commander we’re ready to jump out when you are.”
[Josh] “Take the lead I’m linking up with you now.”
The ship’s jump drive started charging and fired taking both ship into a Argon sector.
Josh decloaked his ship and hailed the trading station. While the rescued people were being transported onto a Transport Josh sent Hagion a message requesting a pickup for him and the two ships.
Josh sent Ban Danna a message with a file telling all about Sherry’s Ex and the killer he hired with a promise to come back and see him in a few days.
A long range message came in from Sarah. “We are waiting at this position to pick your two ships up welcome back.”
The two ships moved to the pickup and stopped then each ship was transported onboard and docked.
Josh opened the hatch and seen Mitchell waiting. “Welcome back Commander.” Mitchell snapped to attention. Josh saluted him and gave him a hug. “It’s good to be back this is Sherry treat her as our guest.”
[Mitchell] “What are your orders Sir?”
Josh smiled at Mitchell. “Take us to Hagion Captain I want to see it.”
Mitchell took them to the bridge as Sherry and Josh watched the ship jump to closest gate and pull away to open space and jump again to Hagion.
Josh held Sherry’s hand tite as he looked out at the signs of green on the surface, the oceans, lakes and the blue skies. “It’s beautiful!” Josh just looked at the planet with Sherry at his side.
[Mitchell] “Sir do you want to transport down or do you want to take your ship?”
[Josh] “We’ll transport down refit the ship and use it’s nothing special.”
Mitchell escorted them to the transporter and a second later they were on the planet. A crowd had gathered and started clapping and cheering as josh stepped of the pad and waved. A camera man set up in frount as a woman handed Josh a mike. “Please Sir say something the whole planet is watching.”
Josh seem one of his aids come up beside him as he took the mike. Josh smiled as he looked around and his eyes filled with tears as he said. “I’m Home!”
