Chapter 3

Unfortunate turn of events

“Why won’t you come with my Christian?”

“No Mom, I want to stay with Commander McGrinder on the Galleon, I want to examine the M3 fighters on this ship more. I will join you later.”

“Ok Christian, but don’t get in Commander McGrinder’s way.”

“Yes Mom”

The President returned to the Carrack to discuss further plans with Admiral Longhorn.

On the Galleon

“Entering system Shining Currents” Said the verbose ship computer

“Where is the Carrack Lieutenant Smith?”

“About 10 km behind us sir”

“I don’t like them being so much behind us. Let’s slow down shall we?”

A large flash creates a terror in McGrinder’s heart.

“Commander a Reaver just appeared out of nowhere and started to attack the Carrack. Its shields are at 80%”

“Bring is around Lieutenant and head for there aid. NOW!”

“Yes sir. Turn around and head for that Reaver now” The Lieutenant shouted to the helm

“Yes sir”

---

On the Carrack

“Sir communications are down and we can’t contact the Galleon but they appear to be on there way.”

“how long Lieutenant?”

“They will be here in 4 minutes and our shields are down to 38%”

“God be with us” The admiral said in a desperate voice.
“Send out the escape pods, safe as many as you can.”

“Yes sir”

Fear pierced through the hearts of the passengers on board the Carrack as the announcement came via the ships speakers, the same speakers that only a moment ago played calm music while the battle was commencing outside.

“Abandon ship, I repeat, Abandon ship. This is not a drill. Abandon ship.”

---

On the Galleon

“Commander the Carrack, the Carrack is about to blow!”

Allan just stared at the site of the ship going down in flames, as the hope of their faction slowly faded away.

“Sir must we retreat?”
“Sir?”
“Commander McGrinder?”

“NO!” He shouted in a tone the crew never heard before. A tone that sounded so vicious that it would make a split tremble with fear.
“What is our fire range?”

The crew still in awe with what they just heard jumped back to their stations.
“Our range will be met in 1 minute”

“What are the shields of the Reaver?”

“She is running on 78% sir”

“When ready fire all weapons and keep heading straight for the reaver.”

“Sir?”

“Just do what I say Smith. Understood?”

“Yes sir”

A blaze of fury fills the sky as the Galleon opens fire on the Reaver still turning to take on its next victim.

“Sir our shields on 85% and the Reaver on 51%”

“Ram her”

“Sir?”

“You heard me, ram that dam Pirate ship”

“Yes sir, brace your self for impact!”

When the two M1 Pirate ships collided the shields burst with great electrical power.

“Lieutenant report”

“Sir, Reaver is on 13% and the Galleon on 50% and the Reaver is spinning out of control.”

“I thought it would work. Finnish her off”

“Yes sir but our shields and weapons are still inferior to theirs. We have a 50\50 chance to win this on”

“Lieutenant, remember my words just before we took Zarph?”

The lieutenant thought for a moment and then smiled.

“Yes sir, I do. Helm move to the side of the Reaver and open fire.”

The Reaver still recovering from the spin started to fire back. The two ships stopped next to each other and opened full fire. The water in the galleon’s kitchen started to boil from the intense heat.

“Reaver at 1 % Shield, Galleon at 9%. Should I Tell the passengers to evacuate sir?”

“No Lieutenant, it soon will be over. The Reaver doesn’t have a quarter of the Galleon’s hull strength.”

“Brace for impact, the Reaver is about to blow”

“Get me a damage report and a Med bay report”

“Mechanical reporting, Hull at 30% and shields at 0%”

“Med bay reporting, 150 dead and 132 injured. Survivors from the Carrack are only 80. Sir Madam President and the admiral did not make it, sir.”

“Thank you med bay” Commander McGrinder just stands there. It feels like a piece of his soul was ripped out. “But why? I lost many more men in the Rebel war.” He thinks to himself “Maybe. . . No it can’t be. Maybe I did. Maybe I did love her” With tears in his eyes he commands for the search and rescue to find and bring in all survivors.

---

After the news of his mother, Christian was devastated. He mourned his Mother alone in his quarters. Commander McGrinder the only leader left of the faction had his hand full of problems. They made for the Military shipyard in Shining Currents but the Boron knowing that they are a new faction did not allow them to dock. Finally Allan could get a com open to one of the Leaders on the Ship Yard.

“Good day to you sir” The Commander began

“Good day Commander, what do you want?”

“Sir we are in urgent need of repairs and we are willing to pay if we can dock and repair our ship”

“The General is not here now and your reputation doesn’t allow us to trust you to dock”

“Please sir, we would do anything. We have many injured and our ship and can’t hold all of our passengers as our other M1 was destroyed. Sir we would do anything.”

“Yes, yes I saw the battle. I’ll make you a deal, but if any one finds out you won’t see another day, do you understand me?”

“Yes sir I do” Said the desperate voice of Commander McGrinder.

“My terms is that we charge you double for the repairs that would be around 150000000 Credits. Then I will lift your faction’s reputation and let you dock.”

A moment of silence went by.
“I agree” Said Commander McGrinder with relief in his voice.

---
“Lieutenant!”

“Yes commander”

“Dock this ship at the military ship yard immediately.”

“Yes sir! Sir, if you don’t mind me asking, why you fell for his terms so easily? I don’t know you to be like that. Are you ok?”

“Well Lieutenant Smith, some times you realize that there are more important things than your own personal goals. I decided to leave my pride for once to ensure the survival of this faction. Now please, we are running out of time and fuel.”

Yes sir.

Chapter 4

Healing

After a hard bang against a metal door a strong women voice emerges from the silence.

“Christian, open up this door.”
“Christian open up this door immediately”

“Go away nanny, let me be”

“Christian, Commander McGrinder wants to speak to you. It has been two days since you ate or drank anything.”

The metal door slams open

“My goodness boy, look at you. Let’s get you cleaned up so that you will look respectable when you go see the Commander.”

At the docking bay, McGrinder stared at the huge space ship before him.

“She is in quite a mess, aren’t she, sir?”

McGrinder turns his head to the right where the voice came from. Before him a six foot man emerges from the badly lit docking bay office. His blond hair deflects the little light in the room to bring out his dark blue eyes. Though still young, the scar on his broad chin displays that this lad had a few rough years behind him.

“Yes Lieutenant Smith. She is badly beaten up but at least she got us this far.”

A few moments of silence passes when the young lieutenant commented again.

“We should give her a name”

“I never thought of that. With all that was going on that was the last on my mind”

“Sir there is another matter that needs to be discussed urgently.”

“What is this now? More trouble?”

“The community leaders asked to meet with you tomorrow in the Shipyards Canteen.”

“Very well. I see the nanny got Christian to finally come out of his room, will you excuse us for a moment?”

“Of coarse sir, see you tomorrow at 10 am.”

The young boy was making his way to McGrinder. He seems different to the Commander. The sparkle in his eyes faded, his stance seems more solid. It is obvious that the death of his mother has taken its toll in this young lad’s life.

“Commander”

“Hello Christian, how are you feeling today?”

“Fine”

“I’m very sorry for your loss. We all carry this burden with you.”

“Thank you, sir. Sir, I need to ask you something”

“I need to speak to you as well. Let’s go some where more private”

Entering another room that is more private, the Commander closed the door behind them.

“You first, Christian.”

“Sir, I want to join our factions navy.”

“You must be kidding, Christian. There is absolutely no way.”

“This is not fair, I want to get them back Sir, and I want them to pay for what they have done!”

“Revenge is not the answer. What do you think will happen when you killed them all? Do you think you will feel better?”

“I don’t care, Sir. I want to do this!”

“I can not allow you to, I am sorry.”

Christian gets up bumping, his chair to the ground while slamming his fist on the table.

“WHY, why do you say that?”

“Do not talk to me in that tone! Calm down. If you can proof to me that you are mature enough, then I will think about it. Definitely not if you keep on acting like this.”

“Sorry Sir, I did not mean to offend you. Thank you for the chance. What did you want to tell me?”

“Don’t worry, it is not important now. Christian, you will have to forgive; you can not live on hatred. This is the only way you will find healing for your heart. We all miss your mother dearly. She was a great mother and leader to us all, but do not let her loss scar your soul.”

‘I will have to tell him some time, but I can’t. Will he even accept the truth, will he even accept me?’ McGrinder thinks to himself.

---

Sweat and blood flies through the air in slow motion as the sound of a fist colliding with a cheekbone ascend through the noise of a cheering crowed. The foul comments from the owner of the swollen cheek do not hurt as much as the second blow that rupture his nose and throws the injured party to the ground.

“What is going on here?”

The once circled crowd opens up at the one end. Three large boron security guards stand with stun guns looking at the mess that Jack just made. Before he could utter a word he felt a sharp pain in his neck, as the stun gun of the one guard took him down with no effort.

---

As McGrinder steps in the prison cells of the Ship Yard he suddenly gets a flash back. He recalls the same kind of smell in the prison where the pirates locked him up.

‘Two years, two years of my life I had to spend in a place like this.’ He thinks to himself.
‘If only it never happened, then maybe Magreth, Christian and I, would still be together, as a family . . .’

“Did you come to collect the prisoner?” An intimidating Boron voice came from the counter.

“Yes, let’s see the prisoner.”

After the cell door slam open a young well built man stumbled out, barley keeping his balance. His pitch black hair was messy and both his grassy green eyes were almost swollen up completely. Through his torn clothes his battered body still showed off his masculine shape.

“What is your name son?” McGrinder asked the young one.

“Jack sir”

“What did they do to you? Are you all right?”

“The just gave me a little hiding sir, I will be all right”

While they were on their way out McGrinder asked him why he got in to a fight.

“Well Sir, Peter started it. He pushed Jasmine on the ground when he passed her in the corridor. He did not even apologise to her. I just wanted to teach him some manners. Sir”

“I understand Jack, but please do not get into any more fights while we are on the Ship Yard. After all we are guests here.”

“Yes, Sir. It won’t happen again.”
