Thanks for your work SS_T. The site seems to be just what X needs, a reliable database that stores alle the usefull and fun stuff for a long time.

Thanks

I have one critique though - browsing through the site is not very pleasant if you are just looking for something that might interest you instead of a specific mod/script. The categories are sometimes too detailed or too general, sometimes overlapping in purpose. There are too many of them imo.

Yeah, the category layout is one of the main problems I have had with the site, I even have looked at other website like filefront to see how they do it but again thats not perfect.

Maybe I need to find some way of better searching and sorting.

The reason some categories are too general or too detailed is because when I started, I copied the structure from the x3tc sticky. However that became too detailed (58 Subcategories) and was too hard to find your way around.
I then tried making more categories to sort the mess out,.. FIGHT, BUILD, TRADE, THINK, IMPROVE. However that didn't have the right effect when the database started to fill up.

So when X3AP was released I used a simpler file structure (8 Subcategories):

x3ap structure wrote:

    x3ap

    • Cheats

        Basically what the title says.

    • Combat

        Combat improvements, new weapons ect.

    • Tools

        Script editors, plugin managers ect

    • Ships / Stations / Objects

        XSP's, mods, ect.

    • Life

        AL and scripts

    • Scripts

        General scripts

    • Visual Change

        Background mods, huds, weapon effects...

Allowed people to post some mods directly in the x3ap directory, however they probably could be put into some of the directories.

I know this is not perfect, but i'm trying to find a good balance. But struggling especially with 1272 download entries.

Killjaeden wrote:

Perhaps these as categories and additionally category tags that you can give the file optionally. The files are stored in their categories but could be filtered by the category tags if you added them.

i.e. Squash-mine-launcher script Category: "Scripts" Subcategory: "Combat Scripts: personal"
Category Tags: Gameplay, Ship

a shipmod that adds new shipmodels might have Category: "Mods" Subcategory: "Ships / Stations"
Category Tags: Ship, Model

I will have a look into making something, however I would then need to edit all the entries to add a category tag which would take a long time.

Killjaeden wrote:

Last but not least it would be better if you could just display them in a tree-type structure without having to go into a folder to see its content. In the folder you should be able to see the name of a mod, but not it's description/picture, unless you mouse-over it. Or a Windows-explorer kind of Structure, the categories at the left side and the description of the selected file at the right side.

I did have a tree structure module that showed only categories, I could re-added that but that not really what you are after. Have you looked at the download list link (http://www.x1tp.com/root/index.php?option=com_xmap&sitemap=2&Itemid=80) it lists all the downloads in thier categories. Its not very good as it is just basically a site map.

Overall it would take a lot of work to change the X3TC and X3R categories due their size. I think I need to work on a better system for X3AP and when XR is released.

For some reason there is a database error, I have check all my settings and they seem to be fine. I also tried an old backup.

So I have contacted my hosting provider to see if it is a database server problem.

as usual there is the backup site if you need files:

Yes.

Categories are always troublesome. No matter which categories you pick, it will be easy for a user to miss what they are looking for.

Search helps a lot.

Also, a "flat" list for each game would be helpful. Similar to the Community Library sticky: You can list the categories as group headers, but show everything on one page. That simplifies browsing and allows the user to do on-page searches for any text they like.

Added a new text box to the download detail page so you can easily copy and paste the link to your mod with more information.

EXAMPLES

File Size: 350.85 KB

File Size: 7.12 MB

File Size: 811.37 KB

File Size: 108.59 KB

File Size: 3.77 MB

Other formats not included yet (PDF, JPG, WAV, EXCEL ...) so the website won't generate the bbcode for them.

Would you like my to add more information in the text box such as Mod Name, modified date, which X version, author,... anything else?

I've been working on a list structure,

See X3:TC AP list

Its not quite how I would like but its a start. Is this the sort of thing which would make it easier to navigate the website?

See where it is in the menu: http://www.x1tp.com/root/index.php?view=detail&id=6&option=com_joomgallery&Itemid=119#joomimg

Also done some more work on the 2nd bbcode box, so now when you copy the bbcode onto the forum you get a lot more information.

More Examples:

Code:
[b]Argon Camouflage Blackstipes[/b] [i]for X3R v1.4[/i]
[url=http://www.x1tp.co.cc/root/index.php?option=com_jdownloads&Itemid=6&view=finish&cid=140&catid=33][img]http://www.x1tp.co.cc/root/templates/x1tp2/images/xdownload-spk.png[/img][/url]

Actually, no. At least I don't need to add more information, as I'm usually posting download buttons / links to my scripts only in their topics or directly reference the topic somewhere instead of posting just a link. In addition to that, I like the XDownloads button as it is now:

Looks fine to me. Although, I have to say that I'm quite happy with the Search function in the right top corner of the site. Of course, with that, it's not possible to search for game specific scripts/mods. So a list of scripts and mods per game might indeed be a good idea.

Smile Yeah same here that's why there is two boxes Wink, the old one and the more detailed one. But its a good alternative if some people need it.
