*FIXED* Game hitches for 5 seconds, reloads UI?

Post by goodgimp » Thu, 19. Mar 09, 20:31

***EDIT***

Just wanted to edit this and advise that I've completely removed 100% of my hitches thanks to this post by SpaceSquirrel here:

http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=237398

Specifically this section here:
SpaceSquirrel wrote: ((1)) CCF explorer

Start up CFF explorer

use file open X3TC.exe

left click FILE HEADER

then look for the word Characteristics

then on the same column will be a word in blue saying

then check on the option

X App can handel >2gb address space

X Aggressively trim working set

I'm usually skeptical on these kind of programs/solutions, but it worked like a dream. I also had a friend try this out and also similarly has gone from frequent hitches to completely smooth gameplay.

Hi all,

Just wanted to know if this is "normal" behavior or if something is wrong on my system. While playing X3:TC, every now and then while flying around the whole game will lock up and freeze for a good 3-5 seconds. I notice when it unfreezes, it seems to completely reload the UI. All the HUD elements and everything disappear and come back, which made me wonder if something was crashing and then being restarted? Or is this expected behavior because the game is doing something like loading a bunch of new textures?

I will supply a DXDiag as soon as I get home (I'm at work) but right now I'm running:

Q6600 quad core
Radeon 4870 512MB with latest ATI drivers (downloaded the other night)
8GB RAM
Vista x64 Ultimate

I'm pretty sure this was an issue that got resolved in 1.4.

What game version are you running?

Esd, I purchased the game off of Steam in North America, but I'm not sure what specific version of the game that would be.

If it happens just occasionally then it's to be expected. The game caches as much data as possible and when it runs out of space to do this it flushes out the cache and starts again. That can take a moment or two. It shouldn't happen very often though, unless your PC is a bit short of memory.

The Steam version of the game should always be up to date if you've not switched the option to keep it that way off.

Right click the steam client and 'verify integrity' if in any doubt that you have the most recent version.

I have the latest drivers and steam version and i have the same problem. it has something to do with having vista x64 and 8GB ram. the memory dumps are random at best and most of the time needed data is dumped. ie: grey planets. hopefully ver 2.0 will fix this but my money is on ver 102.0 :(

I have the same problem occasionally with the same video card (VisionTek Make) but I am running XP Pro. My guess it is this card/series of card.
Version 1.4 Steam
All drivers up to date.

I have this same problem on 1.4, C2D6600, 2GB, 9800GT, XP 32bit, only happens once in a while when i jump to a sector so it's not that bad.
Let's see if this get fixed in 2.0.

When the game flushes its cache anything that is still needed is retained or reloaded. There may be a brief moment in which things like planet textures or the UI flicker while this happens, but it is not normal for planets to remain grey. It clearly doesn't happen for everyone. This has two implications: one is that there is some other factor involved (which means the problem isn't necessarily something the game can solve) and the other is that even if it is a game issue it could be very hard to reproduce (if it can't be reproduced then it almost certainly can't be fixed).

Hmm, I'm getting this too. In addition parts of factory models have been known to disappear. On an XL power plant I've known most of it to turn invisible, with the docking clamps and the little rounded bit alone remaining visible. Well you can imagine what this means when building factories, and this latter problem seems to persist across savegames before fixing itself seemingly randomly. I'll take a screenie the next time I get this if anyone wants.

Yes, Steam and a pretty good though not exceptional machine. My card is a GeForce 9300M GS with integrated RAMDAC, whatever that is. It can run the game on full settings for screenies, though I pay for it whenever I enter combat!

Here's my (late) DXDiag. From these specs, what would anyone recommend to turn down, shaders? I get some pretty nasty hitches at least a couple times during the course of a single gunbattle.

(I can't seem to see an attach button in order to attach the file, so sorry about the spam)

here is the work-around i am using at the moment...

1.) switch to med or low textures (ugly but seem to load faster when dumped by game)

2.) load a memory manager in the background to release memory on low cpu cycles

this also works:

when things get juttery ie frame rate stalls save and reload. this seems to flush the idiot-ships that get stuck going through jump gates and it also reloads the missing textures... most of the time.

if you still feel like pulling out your hair remove 4gb of ram..
the loads and dumps are handled better with 4gb total system ram

another app you could try is 'eboostr' it buffers commonly used files onto removable ram. it works much better than readyboost. i have my eboostr set to 64gb. for me changing sectors doesn't take more than 3 seconds.

CBJ wrote:When the game flushes its cache anything that is still needed is retained or reloaded. There may be a brief moment in which things like planet textures or the UI flicker while this happens, but it is not normal for planets to remain grey. It clearly doesn't happen for everyone. This has two implications: one is that there is some other factor involved (which means the problem isn't necessarily something the game can solve) and the other is that even if it is a game issue it could be very hard to reproduce (if it can't be reproduced then it almost certainly can't be fixed).
here is how this can be reproduced on your machine if you have:

vista x64 any version
8gb ram

(i used two systems to verify:)
sound cards don't matter
NB & SB don't matter
motherboard brand doesn't matter
to raid or not doesn't matter

complexes seem to cause problems in box formations but not so much in linier models. diagonal complex tubes seem to have the highest impact as far as stations go.

traffic jams seem to cause alot of problems. most likely pathfinding around stationary ships at gates needs to be looked at but the main culprite is the inability to reume from wait state to retry entering the gate without player interaction.

with all that said here is how to reproduce the missing planet textures:
1.) start or continue a game and goto 'Legends Home'

2.) build a complex 3 wide x 3 deep x 8 tall with the hub about 3k below the bottom level of the complex. allow other races to buy&sell and setup some suppliers and sellers.

3.) set your ship to explore sector at '2525' from '0,0,0'

4.) turn on 'SETA' at 10x and leave overnight

5.) good morning!
5.1) tell your ship to 'move to position' next to your complex

by this time there should be a massive traffic jam at the north gate and suvere jutters when you look at the station. i get pauses (3-30sec) at times when i do this.

the planet textures will blink in and out at this point durring the dump reloads or they may already be gone.

6.) goto sector 'Akeelas Beacon' using the warp gate

7.) return to 'Legends Home' through the gate by telling your ship to 'move to position' directly south of the gate. let your computer chew on this for a while 'OTAS HQ' is in the way and so is the traffic jam. the planet textures should be gone for good now. they seem to be secondary to ship and station textures.

BTW sorry about being long winded.

same thing here.... and its not random for me ! it will happen when the system is under heavy load Ie. mass battles, most of the time the UI and side bar and any game windows u have open at that time will just reload and disapear for 1-2seconds, this can allso happen when in a system which is packed with npc's and stations ( no battles going on ) allso while in battles the stuttering at some points is just silly and thats when the game starts to p**s me off, and at other times while in same size or even bigger battles, no lag at all... wtf

i really do hope this is fixed in 2.0

I join the queue:

Vista 64 Business
4 GB RAM
AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+
NVIDIA GTX 260 - 896 MB RAM
ForceWare 181.22
DX 10

X3:TC V1.4

And yes, it happens mostly in battles (not even that large).

Post by omnix32 » Sat, 28. Mar 09, 18:51

Same.................

Vista 64
9800 GTX+
Quad 9550

I have reinstalled patched and am playing again fresh.
Game on full and no issues.

Mine was not always battles on my last saved game, At times I show up and the wrap around texture for the sector was just missing, this would cause out of memory errors sometimes.

others times I can confirm. Starting a battle would mess up my wrap around texture and stations would go half missing.

ONLY ON CERTAIN SECTORS> Mine was Paranid Prime.

Much the same problem running Vista 64 Ultimate with 4GB of Ram, GTX 285 and quad core processor. Although i did work thorough a number of the issues relating to codecs and this did resolve it for me. Specifically i removed Nero and ffd codecs. No more stutters or loss of control panel.

Do still get awful slow down in big battles or when in a sector where i have a big complex....shameful really, 1gb 285 graphics cards and i have to run it on medium with a lot of the bells and whisltes turned off, lets hope that 2.0 makes a difference.

LOL all, have fun.....
Intel icore 7, 3.4Ghz, 8GB ram, GTX 285 1GB, 750w power, 24" HP HD monitor....

Thanx for the tip! I disabled ffdshow and although I have Nero 9, I did not install Nero Show Time or other Nero stuff that sounds like it would install codecs. Still I get intense lags and UI reloads. It was extremely annoying in Great Trench today.

These are still my specs:
Vista 64 Business
4 GB RAM
AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+
NVIDIA GTX 260 - 896 MB RAM
ForceWare 181.22
DX 10

X3:TC V1.4

Here comes the list of my codecs (mostly from CCCP, I guess) ... If anyone has a hint on what to uninstall, please tell me.

(Of course, the dxdiag report didn't show any problems)

I will add that this solution is included in the 2.0 update.
