166 cool ship names
Over several years i've been gathering various names that I could use for titling ships in my X games. The names here are inspired (aka stolen) from many games, books, movies that i came across ever since i got a hold of x2:The threat. I tried to avoid the clichés, filtered out all names that were present in X3:TC and i hope the list i finally came up with will help somebody around with figuring the best name for his/her ships.
p.s. Apologies if the post is too long. I thought ordering the names like that will make them easier to comprehend and distinct.

One thing thats got to be said about the British Royal Navy is that they have some of the best names for ships.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ro ... ship_names
Undaunted
Zealous
etc
I don't think its a good idea to name them after states and there is far to much greek already in the game...damn paranids/argons
My vote goes to these 2
Ridiculous
Insolence or even better Insolent

I tend to go for culture-style names with my combat ships - understated and malign... like "Commerce and Diplomacy", which was my personal fighter in X².Carlo the Curious wrote:GA's alternate name would be good for a Xenon K .
Anyway, you'll find a list of Culture shipnames over here on wikipedia:
Linky.
*warning* some ship names are not polite at all... some rude words behind this link.

I really like things like this. This is the best single list of ship names I have seen yet
There are dozens more player lists on this post from last year, some silly, some thoughtful, some funny, here http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0

Baldrin? Who, what or where is Baldrin?

Re: 166 cool ship names
Well I haven't played freelancer. The American states i've picked are already used as names of active (or formerly active) US battle ships. And i really like the sound of "Arizona" or "Philadelphia".Ozman202 wrote:... although im wondering the ships named after places/States in the USA did you plunder those from real ship names or from the Destoryers in liberty space in freelancer
That i sincerely don't remember. I recall seeing this name in an encyclopedia a long time ago but who or what it was....NeverSnake wrote:Baldrin? Who, what or where is Baldrin?
I'm happy that u'r enjoying it, it's been a lot of work put there.

I was considering naming my "personal" combat ships after Combichrist song titles... but I'd never be able to post any reports on my ships with names like that... anywhere. Although I do have one of the less offensive song titles as the name of my LX in Reunion - "Get your body beat".
Wikipedia has the album/track listings here - oh, if you're easily offended by words... don't even bother looking.

You're welcome and no worries, it was months ago, and to me, the more of this the merrierNightPrince wrote:Thank you, The Happy Trucker and apologies for doubling your thread. I must have missed it.
Since that thead I have come up a couple more ideas, for example, my first three Elephants were named as follows
1. Mother In Law's Christian Name
2. Mother In Law's Middle Name
3. Mother In Law's Surname
Then, in a flash of inspiration, I came up with
USS Jenna Jameson (the, er, filmstar)
and a whole new range of names was spawned.
These names arent usually up to much, but researching them is great fun...

Great list but more than one word always beefs a name up, I've taken a liking to Pillar of Autumn from Halo. I've also got Loss of Patience for my Aquilo. My Hyperion Vanguard is called Black Arrow (slew the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit).
And I just had to name a ship Serenity, cheesy I know but it's a proud name that deserves respect.
In my old XTM game I also had the Endeavour, Captain Cook's ship and on our 50c coin (can you guess where I live).
Naming ships is nearly as fun as playing with them.

Well I tend to use names that either fit what the ship is assigned to or the circumstances on how I aquired the ship in the first place.
And my complex's are named on what there for or what they produce.
A few Example's
one of my Mammoth TL's is called "Bob the Builder"
another one is "Mr Shifter"
Elephant TL supply ship "Fat Frank"
my Homebase deffence fleet is
Carrack M6 "The Caretaker"
his escort Nova's "Caretaker's Sidekick I,II,III and so on.
My M7M "Mad Missile Mike"
A few complex's
"The big Bang plant" Missile production complex
"The s**t & chip shop" originally built for the Hub mission.
Produce'es Teladianium & Micro chips.
My latest complex is just know as "Mahi Ma's crystal mines"
I'd name a few more but I'd probably get banned

Well frankly i prefer one-word names. Otherwise they seem too heavy and well complicated. I like too keep them simple. As for "Pillar of autumn" i like the sound of that alright. However after all these years since i first saw it i'm still unable to grasp what it means (guess my english is not sophisticated enough).

Some of my own ship names: All starting with UEC (United Earth Colonies)
Apocalypse
Avenger
Cydonia
Genesis (Begining)
Ghunne (My Valkyrie, the name of a major one)
Innuendo
Intrepid
Morgenstern (Morning Star)
Mutter (Mother)
Procifiscior (Awakening/Arising)
Rhapsody
Rosenrot (Red Rose)
Sehnsucht (Nostalge/Desire)
Sonne (Sun)
Templar
I also like one-name ships, mainly because they are simplier, easier to remember and they sound better if they are well chosen. I try the names to match a same fleet; for example, my personal tactical fleet's capitals are named after songs of either Rammstein, Muse or Queen. The M1 of the fleet is the Cydonia, my personal M2 is the Rhapsody, the other three M2's are the Innuendo, the Morgernstern and the Rosenrot, the TL is the Mutter, two of the M7's are Sehnsucht and Apocalypse... usually they are escorting their "relatives".
My defence and patrol fleet will have mroe generic names but ressembling protection; Defender, Templar, Crusader, Sentinel, Protector, Knight... WIll be that way if I don't get a better idea
