I believe under UK law (Data Protection Act) they are not allowed to pass on your details to a third party without your prior consent and I believe are required to treat it as confidential information (so are required to protect the information appropriatly)...

Essentially the data protection act means they can't use your data for anything other than that which you have agreed.
In other words, they can't sell it off to others for marketing unless you have agreed (seen all those "allow special partners to contact you about promotions and offers" on forms these days?).

The UK legislation (which doesn't cover Egosoft) is designed to meet the requirements of the European data protection legislation, so I imagine Germany has something similar. The basic premise is that companies cannot use your personal data for purposes other than the one you gave them the details for. This doesn't stop an organisation from passing your details on to another company, provided that that company is carrying out appropriate work for the company you gave your details to. The second company must also be bound by the same rules governing the use of the personal data. If that isn't complicated enough, you then have to work out why you're giving your data to the company. If you're buying something, then it's obviously so they can send you the goods (and maybe pass details on to a credit card company, if you pay with one); in other cases it might not be so clear.
What it comes down to is: Are you happy that you know what the company is going to do with your data?; Are you happy for them to do it?; Do you trust the company to keep within the legislation? If the answer to any of these questions is no, don't give them any personal data.
