Risky Business

Post by Flashand »

This occures shortly after X3-R and Before X3-TC. (Keep in mind that i have yet to play TC.)

Xenon Sector: Unknown,

Listening over the command channel I was very contrite, and severely limited in my options. I really don’t believe I was blackmailed into this assignment. We are sent as a reconnaissance team for a later deployment. Our mission as stated is simple go in scan the sector and evacuate. Our task force included two Argon M2 class Titans, one M1 Colossus revamped to hold 2 M6 Centaurs and twenty fighter craft. The two centaurs were given a little upgrade, the ability to launch two boarding pods. The boarding pods both held 8 “volunteers" each.

As I was recently convicted of assaulting a superior officer, unfortunately he was the moron in charge of this operation, I was given a choice. Volunteer for this mission or be sent to a mining facility for twenty years. I will admit I like a good fight, even more I like to win. The boarding pod when I climbed in over three hazuras ago looked like a coffin with an engine.

The eight of us watched as the Colossus went up in a blaze of Xenon J fire. Five of them pounding on the poor thing soon had the shields down and the ship disintegrating. The centaur launched as soon as the jump was complete so the show even though grotesque was spectacular.

Ki Nolikopts a Taladi, the captain of the other Centaur went bravely to his death attempting to scrape the hull of one of the J’s to loose his Space Marines. I don’t know if they launched but a loud explosion of the loss of the first J jerks my attention to the other side of the craft. We are strapped on the belly launcher of the M6 there is another on the top of the Centaur. We are very nervous as we watch M3’s get swatted like flies.

Bo Groutes, our Captain of the Submersible, a Boron of remarkable piloting skill narrows in on a J its firing pattern is off as we watch it must be swatting missles. Bo gives the order at three hundred meters for the top pod to launch, and as it is cruising in at top speed of 50m/s vaporizes at about two hundred meters.

I clench my jaw as I remember the brief, the J’s weapons are unable to target a ship within 300m.

“You make Boron mad!” Bo screams over the airwaves, and we brace as we are jerked back around to come in on the looming J. We are coming in above the J at 136m/s but we didn’t know the boron had a trick up his slimy little sleeve.

As I am about to bend over and kiss it goodbye I am thrown sideways as the boosters kick in we now hurtling through space at 600m/s. As I pause the punch of the launch button at one hundred meters I slam it down at eighty meters. As we watch the Valorous Bo careen off dumping missiles by the dozen I finally understand what it was that blew the other ship to pieces.

The shields are down as I watch the monitor and I feel like the time is right as we burn through space at 300m/s and slowing. I hit the ejection system and eight the lid blows off a mere two breaths later the chairs boost the eight chairs ten meters above the pod. I flinch as a hammerhead blows by me at 200 m/s and slams into the hull of the defunct pod.

Five of the eight of us make the landing, whatever happened to the insane Boron we can only hypothesize. Enough missles have pounded the J so that we have a decent size whole to jump into so we bail in and take cover then bring up a mini screen out of the tech’s pocket to find out the internals of the ship.

Slanki Kraas our hacker is top notch, he busted into Argon banking and “transferred” five hundred million credits to an anonymous split almost sparking a Family war. As he was a lesser member of a different family, and the target a higher rank in another.

The ship has eight decks, and several internal security stations. We had a few plasma grenades, and some hand held PPC rifles. I take the lead and head for the first security station, the humm of the shield generator can be heard coming through the hull. I let go of a grim smile and keep my gun pointed forward. My pulse pounding in my head and I mentally count to keep my breaths in check. “Count your breaths keep them low.” I say as we continue down the hall.

The sounds of exploding rounds and combat die abruptly as we make our way to a few meters of the first security check point. I toss a plas grenade down the hall and hear it bang into something metal before the burst of raw heat comes roaring back down the hall. As soon as I can tolerate the glare I step into the hall followed by at least one of the others both of us letting loose a spray of particle’s that mist what’s left of the battle drone.

The others push past me and charge down the hall into the intersection, there was a reason that the station was at that point I found out a short time later. It had a clear field of fire in four directions. One happened to lead up to the next deck, slamming my back against the wall I lead off down the corridor and up the stairs.

“Split say hold a momenta.” Slanki

I freeze and back down the stairs as Slanki kneels down and starts patching into the internals of the J.

“Slow but easy, almost…done. No more security.” the high pitch voice spouts rapidly.

I nod and doubt that seriously, but up the stairs we go. Passing the next five security stations and disabling them physically makes one feel safer, but as we pulled the computer out of the sixth it started to acquire a target. The Split, cursed and began hacking into the mainframe again. Shortly he had the drones offline again, hopefully this time for good.

We ran down the corridor to the right of the stairs and spun to the right and slowed at the next intersection. A Taladi slid into the hall and was ripped apart by laser fire. The rest of us turned to the Split with an ugly glare. I figured he would have tried to off he Boron among us instead of the Taladi.

“Split not fault, must be independent from other controls.”

I dropped the rifle into its straps and pulled a gernade a threw it at an angle down the hallway, as fast as my suit would allow I followed that with two more. I made it three simply because I wanted to make sure that the turret was dead. A few moments later two members of the squad pepper the hallway with particles. And we all bolt down the hall leaping into the bridge, independently we begin running to the stations. Now that we have the bridge we have total access to all of the override protocols and can shut down the internal defenses.

“We have a jump drive, and enough power in the engine to give us a leap anywhere in the universe.” Gar Stine states, he is an ex pirate shipwright and in this instance his word is law.

“Jump us to Cloud Base North East, our extraction area is in between the east and south gates.” I say as I hand the coordinates to the nervous Split, but he only nods as he hacks them into the jump drive.

Nine green lights and one red light up, then one drops off. Another and another, “Oh!” I think to myself just like Betty, except there is no annoying voice. I smile as the last green fades and we jump.

“This is Argon One to incoming Vessel, drop your shields and prepare to be boarded.” Ban Danna states as the jump finishes.

Dead on coordinates, “Drop shields and power down everything.” I command and smile as I see off in the distance a beat up Centaur crawling towards a hospital ship.
Two transport ships head in towards us as the screen goes blank.

“All’s well that ends well I guess.” I comment over the suit com then lean against a banister and wait for our replacements to arrive.

Thirty two people went on that mission just in pods, thirty two. What I don’t like is the fact that we were only supposed to patrol, need to know information blows!

If I knew I would have been sent on a suicide mission with a ships captain with a mental deficiency, not talking about the insane boron, I would have killed the SOB and this would have been fit punishment.

The reason I socked up his insanely ness was simple he ordered a flight to attack a Kha'ak destroyer during the invasion. I told him to bugger off and we finished sweeping the fighters and let the 2’s battle it out. But he never engaged the destroyer he hung back and watched it pummel a few stations to dust when Dana comes out of nowhere with 6 other ships to retake Argon Prime. Before Dana can intercept the Kha'ak the jump, all of them.

So when I dock the moron Si (Sigh) Jroge storms onto the flight deck and starts ranting about cowardice. I laid him out cold in one punch, when he awoke I found out that I finished knocking whatever sense he had in him, and start wondering if I had any to begin with.

I should have been given a medal and a pat on the back, instead I got the shaft. Even after the brass took a look at the tapes from various flight recorders, and from system scanners. I got the shaft, they took my M3 and stripped my flight privileges and stripped me down to 2nd class (1st recruit 5th flight leader), and after two weeks they gave me this option. The way I seen it at the time was simple the brass wanted a fall guy for the Kha'ak blowing fifty million in stations to dust, and I was stupid enough to raise my hand higher than anyone else around.

The thunk of metal on metal heralds the arrival of the TS. I look over the survivors of our expedition, one split hacker, one Boron tech, an ex-pirate shipwright and myself a fighter jockey that at one time had two weeks left in his enlistment. Misfortune that’s going to be the name of my M5 and then I’m going to blow it to Space dust!

In my musing I forgot one critical thing, when playing dice with the brass keep in mind they always come up snake eyes! Or the Brass always gets polished, either way it ends up being the same thing.

After three days of debriefing and maybe six mizuras sleep, I am once again confronted by the Admiralty. This time however they owe me instead of me being raped.

I do believe the God’s of the universe like to spit in my face, upon walking in the Admiralty looked grim. I wished I had a PPC rifle now, as I stare across at the five highest ranking members of the Argon Military, and with a twist, there sits three Boron Kings Guards all Admirals, Split x2, the Taladi come in threes, and the Paranid have decided to invest in this lower life’s time. OH I FEEL LOVE!

As I am guided to my seat, I notice that my old attorney is sitting next to me. Her file is a little thicker than the last time but the only thing that seems to have changed is the number of guns pointed at me.

“Ladies and Gentleman, Senator….” I tune everything out.

I’m spaced, again! For the first thirty mazuras I listen barely, and keep my hope that one day ill die. Then they start getting to the point, sorta.

“The Argon Military is setting up a Training facility for all races in Cloud Base South West, this will be a temporary station and well out of regular space so that we can avoid the asteroids and regular in system traffic. Each race has forty slots available to fill with their own people…”

For the first time I notice that I am not the only survivor in the room, slightly to my right is the other three of my “Volenteers” and a little bit behind us I is the visage of a Boron, with enough shiny medals to make a Teladi merchant envois.

“Sub Admiral Bo Groutes, from Boron will be in charge of the station, with Fifth Gar Stine, Fifth Slanki Kraas, Fifth Tilimous Sslank, and Captain Dregan Bgorth **Wait that’s my name but I’m not a …** as lead support personnel. Military Shipwrights of all the races will be on site to develop better deployment and support vehicles. The Parinid have graciously sent two M7 class Hyperion’s to us, we will have several other ships from the rest of the races sent to the Military outpost for research and Development.”

“As for the successful completion of the Primary objectives, with the unfortunate loss of far to many lives, we believe that incursions into both Kha'ak and Xenon territories will have to wait for a later date. Now if no-one has anything to add..”

“I believe our guests have something to say Admiral Danna.” The baritone of an overplayed voice sounds familiar as I turn my head looking up I notice even more brass and the face of Kyle Brennan. Behind him stand four Argon’s with really odd white clothes. “People of the Common Wealth Admiralty, I present to you Admiral Takada, Admiral Green, Admiral Fluer, and High Admiral Jamal De‘ Vinci of Earth.”

There were a lot of murmurs from around the room, personally I still though Earth was a myth, something mothers told children to help their imaginations grow.

De’ Vinci walks to the center of the room with an air of superiority I thought only the Parinid possessed, unflinching he seemed used to giving orders and people jumping to accommodate his every whim. In his eyes I noticed something that I have rarely seen.

“I believe that you were about to set up a training facility to accommodate the need to capture any space vehicle with minimum damage to the ship itself. The People of Earth have been at this occupation for quite some time and we would like to offer our assistance and guidance on this matter. We are here to offer you one of our M7 marine transports and pods for your scientists to reverse engineer.”

There was an audible pause here while the fact that Earth existed, not only that but some her legendary weaponry was being given to our odd collection of races. The look on the Taladi’s faces was that of ultimate profit. The Boron looked on in awe, the only one’s that seemed upset about the whole announcement seemed to be the Paranid.

“I bet,” I thought to myself “being treated like an inferior race doesn’t go down well.” I tried not to laugh but the grin on my face was far to hard to control.

“We are also allowing twelve of our training cadre to help you set up your own academy. These men and women will be returned to us in six standard earth months, this should be sufficient time for you to have your own training people ready to take over.” De’ Vinci looked over the crowd, still standing in the middle of the room like a white King of space. “however we still will not allow incursions into our space, and will have a ship sent to the system you call Circle of Labor the day prior to end of our time schedule. This is only to help ensure that the Terroformers will not once again invade The Human core systems, nor will we allow these creatures you call pirates to infest our space.” With that he produced a reader and passed it to the closest person to him, my attorney. With no further flare he walked between the waiting ranks of his people and out of the room. Twelve black garbed humans then walked into the room and stood at ease in front of the combined panel.

What with Cantankerous falling 'off' the planet, now you disappear.
Ain't contagious is it :?
I think most people are reading this but shovelling salt on us Mac users of X3: The Reunion + Bala Gi v2.0.2 by playing Terran Conflict till their blood boils.
:D Probably explains why I am still reading things in the Creative Forum :(

If you get a chance to expand on the story......!
