Editing Terran Conflict - The Very Basics
The guide for new beginners...

[ external image ]

Some weeks ago I decided to write a tutorial about the basics of general editing Terran Conflict with a focus on the modding-part as this is my 'speciality' (aka I cannot do scripting nor MD-programming ^^' ).
This tutorial really covers only the most basic things you need to know and is written for total beginners who've yet to even touch the X modding-tools. Though even more experienced modders may find the one or other thing they didn't know. :)

Well, I don't want to write another long text so here is the link to the tutorial:

Editing Terran Conflict - The Very Basics

Editing Terran Conflict - The Very Basics (PDF)

Due to formatting reasons, I won't be posting it directly here as I would have to change quite a lot and I've already wasted enough time on this tutorial. :P

I hope it helps keeping the flow of newcomers steady. :)

Greetings,
enenra

Glad I was able to help you a little. :)

@all
If you think that this tutorial should encompass another chapter about something, please post it. ;) Though remember that it should be something which is considered 'basic'.
Of course, ideas for future tutorials are welcome as well.

Thanks 'enera' for this comprehesive guide, i'd often look at some of the stickies and got confused but you've done an excellent job here!

i'm sure that this will help those budding new modders to create some very interesting stuff!

just one request could you do a link to a .pdf version please? my internet is FUBAR! and i'm having to use my local library internet for the near future.

Once again many thanks. :D

what are your plan for going into the different aspects of modding in more detail?

Well, first I really wanted to cover all aspects. But that most likely won't be possible due to lack of time and also skill. I know quite a lot about modding but by far not everything. And while I've got a broad knowledge, I don't know all the details.

What I want to cover are the types-folder with all its possibilities and the graphical modding aspect. How to bring a model into TC, for example, in which I could cover the aspects from textures to getting turrets to work and more.

that sound great, i can alter things using doubleshadows X editor, such as adding stations, cahnging backgrounds stars planets etc, i have trouble adding sectors and getting them to appear on the galaxy map :headbang: and i have absolutly no idea how to do anything with models and such. I can see this being of great benefit to myself and a lot of others. will be following closely. :D

keep up the good work

@spacefueladdict

You need to modify the 00749.bod (At least thats what it was called in X3R)
Its basically a 3d moddel, that has all the sectors and their positions in the galaxy map. (And the lines joining them, and apparently..

Hmm... I can't seem to find a sticky on it.. but I know someone stuck up a nice jpg of what it looks like in 3ds/g max

thank for the pointer, i seem to remember there being something in the X3R forum somewhere, and i seem to remember the 00749.bod file. i tried playin with it in X3R but i just couldn't wrap me walnut (my poor excuse for a brain) around it.

I think the problem was trying to understand the positioning using the co-ordinates for the boxes and the lines :headbang:

I recommend using a 3D-application to edit the 00749.bod. It's way easier.

(tho remember to point the DBOX2-path to data files to somewhere where there is no data or it'll load models for sector boxes)

Well, you won't be able to mod any ship with the infos you get here. This tutorial covers the basics which will help you to understand other, more advanced, tutorials better. Also it will help you to understand the workings of TC (How are the files organized? Where are these files located, and where those? Which files change what in the game? etc.) ;)

Hi enenra
Two questions:
Are you planning to expand the tutorial about how and for what to use 'types' files?
And I know that this is stupid questions but how exactly to import file in Gmax 3d application.I know for DBox2 and X2BC but how exactly to do it.
I know that DBox2 is run in Gmax via MAXScript button and that I must have YAGG instaled, also with X2BC for use to decompress bob files to bod but I do not know how to import them.
Here is my steps:
First I open Gmax then YAGG,after that I run Dbox2 in Gmax via MAXScript Listener. Then I convert Otas_M2R.bob to Otas_M2R.bod with X2BC.After I open bod file with MAXScript Listener then use YAGG to grab the file an save it.The file that I save I try to import via Gmax but it
reports 'Invalide file' all the time.
Sorry for boring you with my question but I am confused :?

"little newcomers" .... You do think highly of yourself dont you. Whilst I'm not claiming you are, your introduction makes you come accross as an elitist meglomaniac. You might want to revise it as it just seems off putting, hardly the most encouraging of starts for someone wishing to get into X-Modding.

Usefull conceptual guide but more like a glossary than a introduction to modding. Am sure it will help some establish concepts however. Concede a good place to start if you are not aware of anything.

You not what they say, "a little knowledge is dangerous".

(Hoping that is a fair appraisal rather than just seen as being critical. As it still leaves you wanting more. Appreciate the effort still.)

@ Idea

I found the X3 Reunion Scripting & Modding forum very useful. There is only a small number of differences between TC and X3 R.

Try here also
