Low Frame Rate Issues on Good Rig; Tweaks Not Helping

Post by Doktor Teufel » Tue, 18. Nov 08, 22:55

Exact nature of the problem:
I can't get Terran Conflict to run at an acceptable frame rate on my rig. Essentially, when starting a new game (makes no difference whether I choose a selectable character archetype or the custom "X-Universe" option; I've tried all five), on medium-low graphics settings such as:

1440 x 900 x 32
2x Anti-Aliasing
4x Anisotropic Filtering
Medium Textures
Medium Shaders
All additional options (Glow, etc.) left unchecked
No forced V-sync or any other forced GPU setting

...I get 20-30 FPS once I'm in-game. It's not strictly a slide show, but it's very choppy. If I put my settings fairly high, such as:

1680 x 1050 x 32
8x Anti-Aliasing
8x Anisotropic Filtering
High Textures
High Shaders
Glow enabled and Ship Colour Variations checked
Forced V-Sync with Triple Buffering through GPU control panel

...it does turn into a slide show, and I end up getting 12-24 FPS at best. You'll note that I also have X³: Reunion registered, and vanilla/fully patched X³ runs just fine with the "fairly high" settings I outlined above, at ~60 FPS on average. I understand the tech in Terran Conflict may have changed, but I'm just putting that out there to give you a basis for comparison.

The only way I can get decent FPS from Terran Conflict is to crank every setting just about as low as possible. Texture, shaders, resolution, extra options, no forced anything, etc. Which is bothersome, since my machine meets and (in some cases) exceeds the recommended system specifications (specs to follow).

I'd like to mention that I'm obsessive-compulsive about keeping my computer free of malware and spyware, keeping all my drivers up to date, and ensuring that only absolutely system-essential processes run in the background while I play games. Oh, and I've read all the stickies here, did some forum and Google searches, checked for ffdshow codecs (I don't have any), all that good stuff.

My system specifications:
Small Summary:

AMD Athlon Dual Core 3.0 GHz
4 GB DDR2 RAM (3.0 usable in Win XP SP3)
2x GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB w/SLI bridge
(I always use a headset which apparently functions as its own sound card)

Any modifications or mods?
Not at all; this is a fresh install as of today, and I have not altered it in any way.

Additional symptoms:
I, too, get a huge FPS drop when loading saved games, even more profound than the low FPS when starting a fresh game. This combined with having low FPS in the first place with makes Terran Conflict essentially unplayable for me, but the saved game issue is not part of my general FPS issue, so I'll only mention it once here, and possibly again later on in the appropriate thread.

Type of game played:
I've tried starting as any of the available starting options, and it seems to make no difference.

Additional comments:
I'm a big fan of Egosoft and the X series, even moreso because you guys are the only people on the planet still creating quality space simulations. So even though I'm not particularly happy that Terran Conflict isn't running that well for me, I'm willing to stick through the troubleshooting process and, if necessary, wait for a bunch of patches and possibly upgrade my machine.

But playing soon would be nice, too. ;)

Is your hard drive working away like mad while playing?

Also, have you tried this without using the headset? There is no way that will be a hardware based device (IE, the sound will be processed by the CPU) and it could be having an impact. I also take it this is a USB based headset? If so, it is possible that the constant flow of data over the bus might be having a negative impact on the performance also.

It doesn't sound like my hard drive is chugging away, no. I don't know if there's another way to monitor this; I'm familiar with the page file and CPU monitors under Task Manager, but nothing to do with the hard drive. If there's a way to get some sort of readout, I'd be glad to try that.

Speaking of which, although my hard drive has been quite recently defragmented, I will run the defragmenter again this evening. I've occasionally found that, with large games (like Fallout 3 most recently), defragmenting the drive right after they've been installed (whether Windows says the drive needs it or not) can noticeably improve performance. I'd forgotten about that.

Regarding the headset, I did a few tests, and there appears to be no difference between using it or switching back to on-board sound (I even unplugged the headset's USB cable for good measure). So that's out, which is a relief in a way, since I enjoy using the headset all the time now.

Any other suggestions are always appreciated and I will test them at the earliest opportunity.

checking hard drive activity is relatively easy, you see that light on your computer that blinks a lot while you turn on your computer? well that indicates hard drive activity. So if you see it blinking a lot while playing the game that means the game is getting data form it, or sending data to it.
Anyway I can't really help you with your actual problem, but there are a lot of people with performance problems. Good luck ;)

And what would be the solution if you happen to have a lot of read/write access to the hard drive? I think I have, but my RAM is 4Mb already.

Rename the file 000002.mov to 000002.bak, this contains the ingame advertising board videos which cause significant (and constant) hard drive access.

@vbruzual: normally that indeed indicates that there is no more space in the ram. Thing is, many people with more then 2Gb still have hard drive accessing, just like you. Did you try the 3Gb switch/large address aware stuff? Some people say it helps, I can't confirm that I have only 2Gb. I you want to know what it is or how to activate it, search on google or in the other topics on this forum, there is plenty to be found ;)
I personally think that there is a memory leak or something similar in TC that causes these problems. I'm hoping the next update will increase performance a fair bit, especially the hard drive accessing part. I mean a game should not need more than 1,5Gb to run smooth I think.

What about creating "sticky" thread with step-by-step guidance for 3GB switch? Think it could be usefull for all who want to try it. At least, as a temporary solution.

that's not really a good solution, as it involves both fiddling with the OS boot config file, and the x3:tc exe itself. Too much potential for stuff going wrong for it ever to be stickied in this forum.

I've got a different processor to you (c2d e6400) but word on the 'net is that it's roughly equivalent to yours; I'm not experiencing this problem. I wonder if it's related to graphics card memory - i have the 8800gts 640meg, which has more memory than your setup, though yours beats mine of raw horsepower
Math problems? Call 0800-[(10x)(13i)^2]-[sin(xy)/2.362x]

Dunnow, people would try to switch to 3Gb anyway. Maybe it's better to show them less dangerous path to do it? Of course, without any guarantee.

Well, I have a c2d e6750 with a 8800gt with about the same memory IIRC, and I do have this problem. Lucky you.

Defragmenting the hard drive seems to have helped a little bit. The game is still running at 25-30 FPS on medium-high settings (a bit slower with large asteroid fields in the vicinity), but it could be worse. The saved game slowdown problem seems to have vanished, at least regarding games saved only a few minutes after starting out.

I'm not particularly pleased with the performance at this juncture and do think my hardware is good enough to expect better performance than I'm getting, but I trust that future patches, tweak guides, and the inevitable upgrading of my own machine in a year or two will smooth things out eventually.

In the meantime, I have Reunion/XTM to play with again, and Evochron Renegades (the only other space simulation in existence worth mentioning) as well.

Okay, it's thread necromancy time. :D

Here is the current DxDiag for my system, easily downloadable from MediaFire in .rar archive format: http://www.mediafire.com/?yezjzyagqqk

My rig has the exact same hardware outlined in the first post, and all of my drivers, DirectX and Win XP SP3 are fully up to date as of this week. I also have vanilla X3TC updated to version 2.1.

My current game settings:

1680 x 1050
AA 8x
AF 4x
High Textures
High Shaders
Glow enabled
Color Variations enabled
AQC enabled
ffdshow disabled
VSync and triple buffering forced on in GPU control panel

I run no other applications and as few background processes as possible when playing any modern game. I also defragged my HD both before and after installing X3TC.

Now I should mention, before I continue, that turning off AA and AF, setting Textures and Shaders to medium, reducing resolution, and disabling advanced features doesn't really give me enough of a performance boost to justify turning them down. If I nuke all of my graphics options, it gives me at most ~5-8 FPS increase, which tells me that the settings themselves aren't my problem.

I should also mention that vanilla X3R (fully updated) runs at 60 FPS constant with these settings, only dipping down to 50 or 30-40 in extreme cases when there's a really busy system. If there are lots of ships, asteroids, factories, and guns blazing, it might go down to 20 FPS, but that is rare. Runs beautifully.

Okay, so X3TC runs much faster for me now in version 2.1 than it did late last year. However, I still consider it to be only marginally playable. When idling and fully viewing a very rocky asteroid field (with a few stations and ships also in view), I get 17 FPS. This same situation in X3R would give ~50 FPS, by way of comparison, triple that amount.

When I turn on one (starship UI) monitor, I lose 4-5 FPS. When I turn on the second monitor, I lose another 2-3 FPS. This is constant no matter what is going on on my main viewscreen or what the FPS would be otherwise.

During combat with a number of ships and stations visible, I get 25-30 FPS in a clear system, and in a rocky or busy system, it's more like 15-20. This is semi-tolerable in the beginning, but later on with wing men, fleet battles and my own factories around, I know I'll get a slide show.

Idling in the average system, I'll get 35-40 FPS. When looking at nothing at all (open space with no objects visible and no monitors open), I'll get 60 FPS. When viewing nearly any space station, I get 20-31 FPS.

Now, I've tried out Low Poly 'Roids, CMOD3, Performance Callback, and the old X3 shaders by SSwamp_Trooper, all at the same time. I've barely noticed a difference, although combat seems 5-10 FPS faster in general. I still get the same performance hit when viewing large asteroid fields or stations.

------------------------------------------------------------------

So I guess my question is, what do I need to do to get X3TC running as butter-smooth as X3R? Are there any other performance tweaks I may have missed?

I've heard that the game doesn't support multithreading, and in my opinion this may be the main issue, since scripts are CPU-intensive. Who DOESN'T have a dual- or quad-core these days? Is it possible to buy a 3-4 GHz single-core CPU? I've never even heard of one.

I don't really want to overclock, either. I'm not really knowledgeable enough to take the risk.

I should probably update my GPU soon, perhaps to a GeForce 260 GTX (without SLi... SLi has caused me problems with other games and creates excess heat). But would this fix my issues with X3TC? I kind of doubt it, since X3R runs fast as lightning and X3TC isn't THAT much more advanced than X3R.

And as far as RAM goes, eventually I will upgrade to Vista 64 bit and put in 8 GB total DDR2 RAM. I'm not sure if I want to do this before I junk my current rig and build a whole new computer, though. Does anyone know if a RAM upgrade might help?

Basically, I've tried everything I know how to get X3TC to run smoothly. I've updated, cleaned and optimized my system, done a clean install and update of the game, tweaked many graphical settings, and tried every performance tip I know of, to no avail.

And it may just be that I have to upgrade my computer entirely to play X3TC smoothly at all, but it just seems odd since X3R runs so awesomely on high settings.
