The Saga Continues

Chapter 1: Graduation

Alan and Cathy sat smiling in the front row as both Jake and Alan Jr. graduated.

They had it easy and the family knew it from day one, but Alan took the time to remind them that after graduation they would be truly on their own for the first time. Of course it didn’t mean as much when Cathy came by a few minutes later and said they’d always be welcome here, and not to forget to come by once a month for the family dinners everyone was invited to. The boys both laughed and she hugged them and said not to worry, things were nice and quiet and even the pirates weren’t so bad anymore. Alan Jr. was all smiles about a possibility of a nice peaceful fortune being made, while Jake was upset that there might not be enough “excitement” for his taste.

Alan was the number one student in his class at the flight academy, so it fell to him to give a short speech. Jake sat by waving at everyone and winking at all the girls in his class, and just, well, being Jake, till his brother was finished and the ceremonies were over. They dropped their robes in the dressing room and came out to see family and friends and get their presents. Since it was Argon Graduation, they knew that meant the first ship and their first “pay check” from the mother and father, so that was just expected. Of course having family owning the shipyards, Jake had grand ideas, but Alan knew better. If he wanted that big ship he always talked about, he’d have to work for it, at least for a while.

They walked out to hugs and handshakes from Alan, Julian and the rest of the family. It looked like everyone had made it, and Jake was wringing his hands just waiting on all those credit chips he knew were coming. Alan was thinking ahead, he might want to get a Mercury and invest some of his money. Since things had been so quiet for years, business was the way to go. They walked among the family and smiled as one after the other handed them their presents. Jake was all smiles as was his brother and he couldn’t wait for the official ceremonies to be over. He had friends waiting and there was going to be a big party after this and the women and Space Fuel would be flowing, and he couldn’t wait. Alan was invited too, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to go, it sounded a little too wild for his taste, but then it WAS graduation, and he had his eye on someone from his class too. The official “first ship” was a short little personal family thing and everyone applauded as they accepted, and there were more handshakes as everyone started to turn to leave. Alan Sr. was all smiles and he was the last to say “be careful” to his boys as he walked away, and Cathy gave them both a hug and said, “Come visit sometimes” as she left with a tear in her eye. The boys were possibly the best paid graduates in recent history, and Alan was thrilled, but Jake seemed sad his Grandfather had forgotten his favorite ship.
“You KNEW you weren’t getting a corvette for graduation.” Alan Jr. said laughing.

“Why not, our grandfather owns the SHIPYARD” Jake said seriously.

“It’s not his job, and dad wasn’t going to give you one for free, so let’s go see what we got. I’m sure it’ll be nice.” Alan said smiling. They walked over to the docks and checked their ships codes, it said that their were two new Deluxe Busters” sitting in dock 8.

“Oh, man, Busters, everyone gets those.” Jake whined as they walked around some others who had stopped to admire their new ships, they walked onto dock 8 and the new ships were sitting side by side and Alan thought with the red paintjob and obviously good set of weapon mounts, it was all he’d need for quiet a while. Jake actually smiled as he walked over to his new ship. It wasn’t what he wanted, but then it was the very best Buster made. It said something at least, and he decided he could live with it.

“Ok, its party time!” screamed Jake as he jumped in and started up the new ship. Alan shook his head and started his and followed his brother out into the world of Argon for the first time as new graduates and argon businessmen. They were flying through the sectors, with Jake buzzing freighters and stations, as Alan tried hard to pretend he didn’t know him. The local authorities asked him to behave at least once and he decided that maybe he’d just go get a drink. His graduating class was going to be at a party in Red Light and he didn’t want to miss a thing.

They flew together to the party and docked. They were welcomed and there were drinks and jokes and a good time was had by all. Jake was downing space fuel at an alarming rate, and Alan decided that if he wasn’t careful he’d be spending his first night in jail. He laughed at his brothers antics just like everyone else. Jake was always the life of every party, not by being a great guy, but being a total fool when drunk. He was in other words, the perfect example of what NOT to do, and friends that had known him for a long time just knew having him around would guarantee that the party would be a “howling” success, even if he had to do the howling himself.

Alan found his friend and asked her to dance and after a while they went to “see” her new ship. They were both smiling and she had as much to drink as he did, and the night was a good time for everyone. She mentioned she had a crush on him for a long time, and even then Alan was a great gentleman, and she was surprised. This was their graduation, and it was the one time people got a little crazy on purpose. It was what she planned and she found the one she was looking for, but even now, Alan was trying to be very gentle and careful, and she just laughed and said he was just not as much fun as she had hoped, and went for another drink.

Alan sat back with a blank look, he was fun, he was sure of it. She certainly didn’t think he was no fun a while ago, he thought smiling, but then maybe she just wasn’t the right one. She obviously was still looking, and so would he. He decided that he had enough, and went to the station and got a new apartment for himself. It wasn’t the tiniest one, but it was very modest, he wanted to save as much money as possible to see what he was going to do in the next few weeks. He smiled widely, lie down, and fell asleep. It had been a great day, now tomorrow he’d start looking for work.

Jake was in his glory, he danced and laughed and was hit on by more than one girl, which was of course just the way he planned. He “had” a few that night he was sure, but the next day he woke up in the local argon jail and didn’t remember a lot of it. He had a terrible headache, and his stomach was in knots. He slowly sat up and wished he didn’t, he was REALLY sick, but he was smiling, why he wasn’t sure.

“He lives!” the guard said a minute later as Jake looked up at him standing by the door and smiled a weak smile.

“That’s a matter of opinion.” Jake said holding his head and moaning. The guard just laughed and opened the door,

“Ok, out you go, and don’t go getting drunk and shooting stations any more or someone will drop a missile on you.” He said laughing.

“I shot a station, which one?” Jake asked as the guard just shook his head and went away, leaving the door open. Jake got up slowly and walked out to the front desk. He signed and was given his personal effects in a big envelope. He stuck it under his arm and walked out and started down the hall. He never did get an apartment yet, but then now was as good a time as any, so that was his first priority.

He went to station control and asked about their apartments and decided that just a little one would do someplace to “crash” in for a few hours. He was sure he’d spend a lot of time running around working or doing “other things” and a fancy place would be a waste of money. It was a good thing, because when he opened up the big envelope he was really surprised that a lot of his credit chips were gone. He hoped he bought something, he thought, but what? He had no clue, and after a few cups of coffee he called the police station to report it and they said that’s all he had on him when he came in. Obviously he bought something, he decided, he just wished he knew what. He vaguely remembered talking to some great looking chick about something, and she was really happy.

“By the Maker don’t tell me I bought her for the evening.” He thought, but then that would be illegal, and for what he spent, “oh, god,” he thought, don’t let that be it. He went to his new apartment and just lay in bed a while. He was slowly feeling better and he’d need to go get some work soon, especially after last night, he thought grimacing, and he got up and went out looking for the first time.

Alan Jr. was standing talking pleasantly to a convoy captain when he looked up and saw his brother coming with badly wrinkled cloths and an obvious hangover. He had been trying to convince this guy that his buster was enough to escort him to Aladna Hill, but he was being a little squeamish. Alan smiled and said,

“And here comes my partner now.” And the captain opened his eyes widely.

“You didn’t say there were two of you, both busters?” he asked and Alan nodded saying Buster Deluxes with all the trimmings and they were number 1&2 at the academy. At this he decided for new kids he certainly couldn’t get any better and agreed. Alan said he’d meet him outside and walked over and grabbed his brother by the arm.

“Come on, we have work.” He said dragging him along, but Jake didn’t fight; this was easier than what HE planned.

“We’re taking a convoy all the way to Aladna Hill, and we’ll get some good money for it, so please stay awake and fly right.” He said smiling as Jake pulled his arm away and sniffed loudly,

“I do not fly asleep,” and entered his new ship and went to work.

They flew through Elena’s Fortune and Brennans Triumph when Jake called over,

“We should get together and throw these pirates out of here; after all it’s OUR sector.” He said loudly, and on open coms.

“Would you shut up until we get this job done? You’re going to get us all killed.” Alan said as a flight of pirate fighters approached.

“We heard that, Brennan, and it’s been tried before and we’re still here, so don’t forget that!” they said loudly

“That’s because WE didn’t try, you morons.” Jake said as Alan got a better grip on his joystick, this was inevitable. The first fighter shot a few rounds past Jake as he dropped away and took him out in a fiery blast. The second Buster dropped a missile and Alan sidestepped it and took it down too. It went this way as one by one they fought their way across the sector and through the gate into Danas Chance.

“That’s the most original way to draw pirates away from a convoy I’ve ever seen.” The convoy captain said seriously and Alan immediately stepped in and thanked him saying,

“We aim to please, glad to help.” Jake was just smiling to himself. If he just had an argon law license this would be even better, but he needed this contract and decided to let Alan do the talking for now.

“Well that show was worth what I’m paying you, so great work.” The captain said.

“Great, we can go then,” Jake said as the captain laughed and Alan yelled,
“Get back here.” Jake returned and the captain was laughing so hard he couldn’t talk for a minute.

“You two are a real act, you should take this on the station tour, your great!” he said as Alan just shook his head and Jake gave him a sour look and closed the coms.

They made it the rest of the way without trouble and they had their first official convoy job done. The pay was good and Alan was all smiles but Jake was shaking his head saying he wished he could just “buy” an argon law license, then hunting could be more profitable. Alan reminded him that when he did enough missions a license would be available, and Jake smiled and decided that maybe a few more wouldn’t hurt, and they started back home.

Chapter 2: Making Some Credits

Alan and Jake made the return trip without incident, they even found a few free missiles as they past through Brennans Triumph. It had been a good first day, and even Jake could see that Alan was the best businessman among them. He smiled to think that he wasn’t even to the BBS board when he had a mission today and decided to mention to Alan he’d fly with him when he needed. After all they were brothers. And if one needed another pilot for a mission, why not keep the credits in the family. Jake told Alan he left the party too early, the girls went pretty wild after a few more drinks and Alan admitted he did a little fooling around before he left, and they both laughed their way towards home. They decided to stop in Elena’s Fortune for a meal and coffee, the escort was a long trip and they hadn’t eaten in hours. They sat having a burger and coffee talking about the trip when a man walked up smiling.

“You two a team?” he asked as Alan looked at Jake and he just nodded.

“Yep, we’re the Brenan Brothers, Alan, and Jake.” Alan smiled and they shook hands.

“I have two ships with a rather expensive cargo, and I need a couple of good pilots to get me to Cloudbase Southwest.” He said as Alan’s eyes opened wide, this didn’t sound right somewhere.

“I’ll pay top dollar and all you need to do is see I’m not scanned.” He said smiling as Alan almost choked on his sandwich.

“We’ll take it!” Jake said and shook the guys hand and said they’d be with him as soon as they get done eating. The guy was all smiles and left as Alan turned to Jake with daggers sticking out of his eyes.

“Are you insane? He’s hauling illegal goods and if he gets caught we pay for it too, what were you thinking?” Alan demanded.

“Gee I don’t know, short haul, big pay, no real fighting, just running interference, what the hell did you think I was thinking??” he demanded, and Alan had to admit, with a little finesse, it could work, but the risks were great to mess up their reputation early in their careers.
“You better hope this works, or we’re going to get hell for decazura’s for this.” Alan said and finished his sandwich and they started walking towards the docks.

The trip went well with the two guys flying just to the side of the ships watching for patrols till they got to Ore Belt. The ships went in first and started towards the west gate when a small argon patrol started towards them. Alan could see trouble soon but Jake just laughed and hit his coms saying,

“There’s an argon patrol quick let’s run this way,” he said out loud and started towards the north gate, Alan followed and the two light fighters pursued, calling for them to stop. They gave them a merry chase and in a few minutes the boys sat laughing as the patrol ran over and scanned them.

“Your not carrying anything illegal, why did you yell and run?” the one pilot asked and Jake was all smiles.

“We just graduated, and I wanted to test myself against a real pro, and I must say, your skills are very impressive.” He said with a big grin as Alan almost choked trying not to laugh.

“Well, thank you for that, but we don’t have time to play these games, real pros have serious work to do, so don’t do that again. I’ll make a report of this and we’ll be keeping an eye on you two.” He said and then, “The way you fly you should consider a job in law enforcement.” To this Jake immediately replied, he was just waiting on a chance at his law license and they smiled widely and they awarded both him and Alan a new, shiny law license saying,

“We always need good people, and I’m more than happy to help you out, so see you guys soon, and be careful, there’s a lot of scum out there waiting to take advantage of you.” The coms went blank as both Alan and Jake flew through the west gate and docked at the trading station. They were paid as promised and the man said they were a real good team and he’d hire them again, and Alan just said no thanks and they walked away.

“You have to admit,” Jake started,” Now that we’re in law enforcement it would be even easier.” He said smiling as Alan just shook his head and went home.

Alan was standing at the BBS the next day looking for a mission when Jake walked up, he still didn’t look like he had changed cloths and Alan mentioned it.
“I changed, really,” Jake said with a smile and Alan just shook his head,

“Then maybe you need to quit throwing them in a corner or something, they look terrible.” Alan said as Jake informed him that it was the flying not their personal looks that got them work and Alan chuckled and they continued to search.

“There’s nothing here for a team, want to do two separate ones?” Alan asked and Jake said sure. They each called a number and Alan got his escort in a minute while Jake was still talking, Alan went out to meet the freighter pilot and was on his way, and in an hour his first mission was over. He checked the BBS and found another mission for one going back and did it too. He was doing ok, and hoped Jake was doing as well. He was in the restaurant having a bite when Jake walked in, in a huff.

“What’s up?” Alan asked as Jake sat down.

“I talked to two guys about missions and they both dumped me, I don’t get it.” He said shaking his head.

“I told you, people want someone who LOOKS professional, not someone who looks like their on space weed.” Alan said shaking his head and smiling.

“I am not on space weed, at the moment,” Jake said and Alan turned to give him a serious look.

“What!? I’m not I promise.” He said as Alan just dropped his head he couldn’t believe they were even having this discussion.

“Go get cleaned up and for god’s sake shave, pretend you’re going out or something and then try again.” Alan said as Jake looked at his cloths and shook his head walking away. “This is how I go out” he thought, but he went and got “cleaned up” some more. After a fresh outfit and a shave Jake was on his way for his first mission of the day. It definitely seemed to help, but he still didn’t get it. He wasn’t having sex with these guys, just flying escort. It went well and he was paid and smiled as he flew back to the station to look for another one.

By now Alan had done three short hops and was thinking of quitting for the day. He stood by the BBS and talked to a few other pilots he knew as Jake walked up. He definitely looked better and he told Alan he finally got a mission and was paid.

“Like I said, people think if you can’t take the time to at least look decent then you won’t be there when they need you, it might not be fair, but that’s the way it is.” Alan said as Jake just nodded.

“Well with the law license I can do a little hunting to supplement my escort income.” Jake said as Alan shook a finger at him.

“Pirates have a big organization now, their not just a bunch of nuts flying around if you shoot a lot just for bounty’s then they’ll get together and take you down. In the very least you’d lose a ship, maybe wind up being a slave in the Split mines, so watch that crap.” Alan said as Jake just laughed, he hadn’t seen any pirates that were a threat yet, he said as Alan just chuckled and looked away.

Just then the station announcement came on telling everyone that, “a pirate patrol has been seen in sector, be careful” as Jake got a big smile and said,

“There’s my cue,” and ran towards his ship, Alan stood for a second watching him go, he couldn’t believe he was doing this, now the question was, how big a patrol? So Alan decided to go along, just for safety.

Jake flew out and identified a pirate patrol heading north from the gate. He moved in at high speed and dropped a missile on a medium fighter and it went up in flames, the rest of the patrol whipped around and two missiles were fired, one just went by on the right and Jake made a big loop as the other tried to get a lock. He got a lock on the missile and fired a Mosquito and in a second the Hurricane was gone. Now he opened up on the nearest fighter, a buster that didn’t last long at all, but his partner was right there to get a good hit in. Jake swung around and noticed he lost a little speed, which he swore about, but it was too late now. The buster hit him again, but he had a little shield by now and it didn’t get through. He was holding his own, but he didn’t see the biggest problem so far, the second patrol that was coming down from the north was not happy to see this happening right on their normal patrol, and started in.

Alan left the station to see how Jake was doing when he saw the fight going on in the distance. It looked like he was doing ok, but a second later a few more ships came in from behind an asteroid and Alan swore, he hadn’t seen them till now. He ran in at full speed and dropped a missile on a harrier and it went up in flames, and he started on another with lasers and it didn’t last long either. The numbers were getting better, but there were still lots here to play with. Alan made a pass at a nova and it didn’t like it, the turret was on him in a minute, and he had to do some fast flying to keep away. He set himself up a pattern, and every time he made a pass, he got a good long shot off. The nova was losing shields pretty quick and his reputation was taking a beating too. He was losing to what were obviously a couple new kids and it made him look bad. Alan made another turn and really hit him well, just as he got a few shots into Alan’s shields and they dropped dangerously low. With no choice Alan dropped back and dropped all his remaining missiles on the nova and it went up in flames.

Jake was doing ok, he thought, till he saw the new ships approaching, He wasn’t too sure now, he just kept fighting and hoping, just as a missile took out one harrier. He smiled, he knew Alan wouldn’t let him here alone, thank god for being dependable, he thought with a big grin. The second harrier was gone and Jake had finished off a buster too. One Falcon and one nova and they’d have it done, and he dove onto the falcon just as he saw Alan doing donuts around the nova. The falcon got off a few good shots, but Jake was more maneuverable and he got behind him and finished off his shields. Then it was just a matter of finishing the job and he would help Alan with his. The falcon went up and he made a quick turn just as several missiles ended the nova. The two ships stopped a few meters from each other with both the guys sitting with a big grin as Jake called,

“I knew you couldn’t stay away.” And Alan started to laugh, and said at least they had made a few credits and they laughed some more and went home for the night.

Chapter 3: Jakes Surprise

After a few days work the guys had a pattern going, they’d meet and then decide to go as a team or as singles depending on what was available. They were getting a good reputation and there was one guy who asks for them by name. It looked like starving wasn’t going to be the problem at least. Jake whined and complained about the cost of repairs, as Alan laughed and told him that you’re supposed to plan for that stuff and save a little back. Jake admitted he’d saved a little, but at this rate he didn’t see getting a vette anytime soon and that was his real dream.

They were just docking at the station and going for lunch when a very pretty brown haired girl ran up happily yelling, “Darling I found you!” and through her arms around Jake and kissed him. Alan was impressed, but he could quickly see that Jake was at a loss for words, as well as memories, and he chuckled, this was going to be good. Jake kissed her back seriously and started to stammer,

“God, I missed you, how’s it going?” he asked straining every brain cell for recognition.

“Its going great, I got the superfrieghter we planned with your help of course,” she said with a big warm smile, “and I’ve been hauling steady ever since. When you asked to be my partner at the graduation party, I thought you meant, well, you know.” She said red faced.

“But when we talked, a little later, you jumped right in and we started our business, its doing great, and I missed you so much since then.” She said and kissed him again. How the bezany does he do this, Alan asked, he knows Jake is only in it for free sex, but every girl loves him for it, it makes NO sense, but here is another example.

Suddenly Jakes eyes lit up and he held her close.

“Sherri, honey you’re the business person here, and Alan and I have a little business going too, so I had full confidence in you. I knew you wouldn’t leave me down.” He said as she squealed in delight, he did let her go alone for a purpose, he trusted her with all that money, and this new business too, she was overjoyed.

Alan was in shock, he was sure Jake was about to be caught without a clue, and he was waiting on the show, but at the last minute he had pulled a miracle again. How the bezany does he do this, he wandered and why doesn’t stuff like this happen to ME? He dropped his head and smiled, he was going to have to think about this one.

“And if we can have some time together,” she said shyly as she looked at Alan,” we can ….talk business for a while and I have a credit chip for you too, your share of the profits so far.” She said holding Jake close as Alan congratulated her and walked away. This was just getting sad, this poor girl was in love with Jake, running a business with him as a partner, doing ALL the work, and she loved it. He was obviously doing something wrong, he decided as he walked towards the station restaurant.

Alan ate and went out on another short run and was just returning when he saw Jake kissing Cherri and waving goodbye as she backed away from the station. Alan called over and wished her well and she was all smiles and thanked him. It was obvious she had a good time, but Alan was still in shock. Jake was a part business owner in a freight hauling business and had made a profit from it and Alan was still in the planning stages. He might not have done the work personally, but he was still a partner and as Alan walked over it was clear Jake had been having a good time too, he was all smiles and standing, watching the ship disappear into space.

“You ignorant bastard,” Alan started quietly as he walked over.

“Now what?” demanded Jake with a serious stare?

“You had no clue who that poor girl was when she ran up and kissed you and you weren’t man enough to just admit it.” Alan said shaking his head.

“I know exactly who she is, she’s Sherri Sillarn, and we graduated together and started a business as partners. She had enough credits for a mercury, but she had big plans, so we spent some time discussing it and I chipped in to get her a bigger ship, all very respectable and legal.” Jake said with a big smile and Alan shook his head and laughed.

“And what would have happened if you didn’t remember when you did, then what Mr. Business.” Alan asked laughing.

“But I DID remember, and we had a very, very fun business meeting, and we have a schedule to see each other every few weeks here to do it again.” Jake said with a flair he usually doesn’t possess.

“And get another credit chip.” Alan corrected.

“Of course she’s a very hard worker, and very honest and very…” Jake was rubbing it in and Alan hated when he did that.

“Oh shut up, its going to come down on you sooner or later, just be warned, that girls in love with you and you know what THAT means.” Alan said seriously but Jake just looked into space and said,

“Ya, I know.” Alan was sure they weren’t thinking the same thing, but he threw up his hands in defeat, this was just too much for one day, and he walked away with Jake following asked what he did now.

Alan had no idea what the credit chip she gave him was, but he knew a hard worker with a superfrieghter could be doing very well, and it just upset him to no end. He was the businessman, and Jake made the first big profit, somehow this just didn’t seem right, but he’d catch up just wait and see. He decided that his Buster was good enough for a fighter, and ordered a mercury of his own from his grandfathers shipyard. He had it equipped and had a trading system extension installed in his ship. Now when things were slow for contracts he had a second business to fall back on, and he could begin making some good money that way too. He would have to be careful, he was short on cash, but he wasn’t letting Jake and his sex crazed girlfriend get that far ahead of him, he had a plan to own the first station and he wasn’t slowing down till he did.

Alan sat up part of the night running freight missions locally to get used to the interface and to replace a few of his credits. He then parked the ship and got some sleep. If he spent some time every day checking BBS for freight contracts and doing escort missions, then he had a 1-2 punch to pull. He could take a freight contract and send his ship to do a pickup at a station even while he was flying an escort mission, in reality doing two jobs at once. He knew he’d have to be careful but it would be worth it in a few weeks when he could afford his first station. He smiled to think he could be this close, and that he’d be a wealthy man in a few yazuras if he was lucky. Of course he didn’t believe in letting everything to luck, he was a planner and by the Maker he had a good plan laid out.

Alan was drinking coffee at the café’ the next morning when Jake came in.

“I thought you’d be at the BBS by now, you always beat me there.” He said smiling.

“I was up late,” Alan said as Jake burst out laughing.

“Do I know her?” he asked and ordered a coffee too, to this Alan just smiled, he didn’t need to know what he was doing, no reason to give it away yet.

“Anything good up yet?” Alan asked as Jake just smiled,

“Not really, some guy in the ore mine needs a freighter for E cells, but no good escorts, just 2 small one hoppers.” He said as Alan smiled and said they could find something later.

He turned his back for a second and pulled out his trading system extension remote and took the freight contract and sent his ship to do a pickup, all very quick and quiet. He then returned to his coffee and continued listening to Jake talk about how slow it seemed today. Alan smiled and agreed and they finished their breakfast as Alan’s first trip of the day was underway.

Chapter 4: A Little Extra

The boys were flying a good escort from the mines in Elena’s Fortune to a station in Thuruks Beard. It was a long trip and they knew it would pay well. Alan was happy to be out, now he could check his other ship, make deliveries, and still follow the convoy while Jake watched for trouble. If they found any he would jump into action and get it settled, but if not it was a nice way to get business done both ways at once. They flew through Brennans Triumph and no one even bothered them to Jakes immediate disgust, but on they flew. When they entered Danna’s Chance things went sour quickly. A pirate patrol was there and demanded their fair share. What they got was an entirely different situation. Jake started laughing, and Alan immediately put away his trading system extension. He knew that sound well.

The first ship was jumped in a second and the Buster went boom right next to his friend. The second Buster was firing missiles as fast as he could and Jake was getting pinned down while trying to get a lock to destroy them. Alan went to work and the Buster was all gone in a second. The next one was a little more serious, it was a Nova Raider, and he had ideas of his own. Alan did a quick turn and avoided most of his fire, and returned with a missile of his own, the Raider was hit well, but his shields returned quickly. Possibly a shield boost, Alan thought and made another pass and hit him again. By now Jake had beaten the missiles and was working on a falcon himself. It was hurt badly but they weren’t giving up so Jake just kept pounding them till they exploded. It seemed every time one fighter went down another popped up and the fight went for quite a while. Alan’s shields were up and down so many times he thought he was in real trouble, but he was very careful and with great timing he managed to save himself more than once. Jake saw his predicament and sent 2 silkworms into the surprised Nova as Alan returned and hit it with a heavy flow of laser fire. This was more than the pilot cared for and bailed out to Alan’s immediate glee. His first capture, now all he needed to do was live to get it, he thought. This was more than a pirate patrol and Jake and Alan were both worried. This was just plain stupid, they just kept coming, possibly they had a base nearby but Alan called for the convoy to keep going and they ducked through the gate into the next system as Alan dropped another Buster with his guns. Jake was yelling and laughing and after a while even he went silent, but in a few minutes the deluge stopped and they drifted to a stop, looking around and laughing. It was tough, the toughest they had ever seen, but with hard work and teamwork, they survived just as a call came in.

“MR. Brennan, congratulations on a well fought victory! We here in Danna’s Chance thank you from the bottom of our hearts; you have done us an enormous favor.” The station manager said smiling. Alan was whipping sweat but as always smiled and said it was their pleasure.

“The Borelli Gang has had control of this sector for months and they were draining us all dry. The businesses here were thinking of closing up and moving away, but now we can stay and get back to being just a friendly Argon sector, thanks to you.” He said smiling widely. Alan had to think a minute, this was always a Pirate sector for obvious reasons, but now it wasn’t? He smiled and asked.

“So thanks to us, the pirate gang that was resident here is gone, and you’re declaring this sector for Argon?” he asked feeling kind of good about it.

“We are all argon businesses here and have been for quite a while, by law we should have been an argon sector, but the pirates were in control, and as you know, sector control is a very important thing. Like the old law says, possession is 9/10ths of the law, or in our case outside the law, but you have changed all that. You stayed and fought and released us from pirate control so now YOU are the sector controllers here, as such you have the right to patrol and even take a fair tax for your services, but of course we hope you consider how badly we have had it up till now.” He said as Alan smiled and looked over at Jake who was waving for him to continue.

“WE accept the responsibility of sector control, and our taxes for law enforcement are….2% nothing more.” Alan said as Jake dropped his head and looked like he would cry.

“That is a very generous offer, as spokesman for the sector businesses we accept, and thank you wholeheartedly. The pirates were draining us by 20 % and we nearly went out of business from it, this will give us a much better chance to recoup our losses and possibly even expand here, and what name do you want on sector defense, it will be shown to all who enter on the bottom of the map right next to the argon ownership?” he asked as Alan smiled and said,

“Brennan Family, Jake, and Alan” he said proudly as the man just smiled,

“I should have known if anyone came to our aid it would be a Brennan, consider it done.” He said and the link went closed, as Alan waved and Jake and he went through to finish their convoy contract.

“Man your SICK.” Jake complained as they entered the next sector.

“Why do you say that?” Alan asked getting upset.

“We had them man, over a barrel as it were, but NOOOO you had to let them off the hook. We could be rich people now but you said “2%” now we get nearly nothing and still need to watch over the place.” Jake said in disgust.
“Jake, they had it bad for a long time, and they were thinking of leaving. Now they’re all happy and they may even expand their businesses and we get 2% of all their business and all the freight business that comes through too. All we need to do is check there from time to time, pirates can come and go, but if they don’t set up a base or stay more than a few hours, we still get credit for sector control.” Alan explained as Jake smiled a little more.

“So we fly through shoot a pirate once and a while and we get 2% of everything that goes on there?” he asked finally getting it.

“YES! And as long as we get credit for sector control we get paid as a law enforcement team, so our argon faction will jump big time. Now all we need is to save our money and that corvette you always wanted won’t be a problem, you’ll have the faction with argon intelligence already.” Alan said smiling. To this Jake decided that being a nice guy really was a paying proposition.

They finished their convoy and started working their way back. Just for the sake of good publicity they decided to make a patrol of Danna’s Chance and see what was still there. They were in the process of doing this when a few more pirates came through the north gate. It didn’t take long to remove them and even Alan could see that it was getting to be a profitable day. He had made 2 runs with his freighter and killed several pirates so he was doing well. Jake was doing just as well too but he was having even more fun. He was all about fighting and this was his best day ever.

“A few more days like this and I might get a new Nova myself.” Jake said as Alan laughed.

“We’re taking out novas now, why would you want one when we can beat them with these busters?” Alan asked as Jake laughed.

“You don’t get it do you, it’s not the ships it’s US and in novas we would be even better. Sure we might take a missile hit we can’t outrun in one, but it has a back turret and that helps a lot, and nothing can sneak up on you then.” Jake explained.

“I thought you were all about a corvette?” Alan asked as Jake just shook his head.

“First Buster, then Nova, then maybe corvette, then who knows, maybe a cruiser or something. You can never be satisfied, so there will always be something better, and that’s what I want.” Jake said seriously and for the first time in a while Alan had to remember they really were brothers and whether he acted like it or not most of the time, Jake was just as smart as Alan was, maybe in a different direction, but just as smart.

“You surprise me sometimes,” Alan said as they started back towards Brennans Triumph.
“Good, a little respect never hurt anyone.” Jake said and laughed as Alan jumped in laughing too.

They shot a few more pirates who seemed very upset they dared to come through Brennans Triumph again and went on through to Elena’s Fortune. They were getting close to the station when a coms message came in and they stopped to get it, to their surprise it was Helena and she was all smiles.

“Well hello, pretty lady,” Jake said as she laughed,

“Shut up Jake,” she said as they all laughed and Alan asked what she wanted.

“I was just informed from the sector manager in Danna’s Chance you two removed the entire Borelli Gang and freed the sector, that’s no small feat. They were so impressed they called and asked for you to get commendations on top of your rewards for it.” She said as Jakes smile grew and Alan asked,

“What rewards?” she calmly informed them that when a sector has been in control for a long time, argon intelligence puts a reward on the gang responsible. It has grown as the weeks went past and a few mercenaries have tried to collect it but without success. Alan was smiling wide too as Helena sent them their rewards across, it was even more than he had hoped and she said on a side note, she was very proud of them for it. She was even happier they were Brennans than before and even Jake had nothing to say and she decided that was a first and closed the link.

“We’re rich,” Jake said yelling as Alan shook his head.

“Not rich, but doing really well, I think you can get that Nova now if you want though,” Alan said as Jakes face grew wide and he said,

“Yes, maybe, “ but Alan was way ahead and he was almost ready to do what he always wanted, and he was on his way to the argon shipyards to decide what station he might want. He had already decided what sector to put it in, he thought with a smile. Alan was almost at the north gate when he suddenly remembered,

“By the Maker!” he yelled and started back at full speed.

“Now what,” Jake asked as he slowed down to see what he was doing.

“I left a disabled Nova sitting in Danna’s Chance.” Alan said laughing and Jake threw the fuel to his thrusters.

“You disabled a Nova there? You lucky bastard you!” he said and they both ran back at top speed... It only took a few minutes to get his codes in it, it was his first time, and he was very nervous. Jake was sitting on guard duty and saying Alan was a lucky bugger the whole time. The ship wasn’t in bad shape at all, considering, and when he got control and scanned it he had 1 25 Meg shield and 2 HEPT lasers on board. It was in really good shape, maybe some tune-ups, and a new back gun, but it saved him a fortune over a new one, and he decided that he really did like the looks of it after all. They stopped at one of the stations and Alan walked over and checked it out. It did need some work but it was almost luxurious inside compared to his Buster and it was a Raider so it had much better speed than a regular Nova had. He decided right there it was his new ship and even after the work he had done he still had enough to consider a new station for himself. He was very happy argon flying his new ship home and Jake kept telling him how “slop” lucky he had been. Now he hoped Jake was right about these fighters because till he got his station into place his buster was sitting in storage at the trading station and his BPAC’s were in the rear turret. He programmed it for defense and away they went and tomorrow he’d think some more about his station again.

Chapter 5: Stepping Up

The next day Alan and Jake were standing talking and he informed Jake he was ready to set up to his first station. Jakes mouth fell open and Alan was all smiles too. It caught him completely by surprise and Alan liked it that way. He said he was going to fly down to Danna’s Chance and do a little scanning for minerals, he had a thought with the businesses there getting a fresh start then there would be a need of ore or silicon right there, the person who satisfied that need would be set up and Alan wanted it to be him. Jake smiled and said he understood, and that he’d help. It made them look good to the sector manager to be there and he could probably get a pirate or two while Alan was busy. Alan agreed and away they went with Alan laughing and rubbing it in just as Jake had done the other day about his freight business. Alan even mentioned that with business booming there that Sherri was probably going to be around taking advantage of the situation. She was a smart business woman and she would see a good profit could be made there. Jake just laughed and said she was smart about business for sure and Alan chuckled to think what he was hinting. If Jake wasn’t careful, he’d find out just how smart that girl was, Alan thought smiling and diving through the gate.

Once in sector Alan did a scan of the businesses and saw three used ore and one used silicon. It was obvious there wasn’t a mine in sector so they had to rely on shipped in supplies. He decided that if he could find a good quality ore asteroid he could set up a business with minimum expense. He stared scanning while Jake patrolled. The sector manager called once to thank them for taking their jobs so seriously and said that several pirate patrols had entered to see the Brennan name as sector controllers and turned and left immediately. The businesses in sector were thrilled and business was booming for the first time in yazuras, and they owed it all to them. Alan was quick to say he had faith in the businesses here and was scanning to add his own there as well and if he found a good asteroid there might be an ore mine there very soon. The manager was so thrilled he said he’d pass the message on and guarantees that Alan would get lots of business. To that Alan nodded and closed the coms, if they would have still been open they would have heard a very happy young argon laughing and giving himself a great loud cheer. This was working out even better than expected.

Alan noticed several small and a few larger asteroids behind the current line of stations. He flew in that direction and started to scan, what he found wasn’t unusual. The small belt was made up of roids that no one thought would give a good return, with a 12% ore roid being the best he saw. He should have known that it was too easy, he thought, but after a through scan he saw a few much further out and decided to fly the distance to check them too. It took a minute to get there and it wasn’t a surprise to him to see better minerals here. It was just far enough away to be almost invisible from the gates, but not from the last asteroids he had scanned. He saw a nice silicon asteroid with 24% in it and after a few more scans, including a small roid with Nuvidium in it at 6%, he found what he was looking for. Just to the right side of the little group was a roid that scanned 32% ore and Alan was very happy, he knew this was well into the profitable zone and he marked the spot on his map and started back.

Alan called Jake to say he had found one and Jake said he’d hang around here while Alan went and got his station. Alan agreed and ran full out to argon prime and made a good deal with a local hauler, and then he called the shipyards and had a station waiting when he docked. It was all over quickly and Alan said he’d meet them in sector and they agreed as Alan flew back to “spot” the roid when they entered. He was very happy and got a call from his grandfather saying he should have called ahead, he would have given him a good discount as family, but Alan said he wanted to prove he could do it himself, and he got a big smile and a nod. The link went dead and Alan called for his freighter to load up with energy cells and meet him in Danna’s Chance. In a few minutes he was there and Jake was all happy too, he had caught a small pirate patrol as they came through the gate and wasted them, adding to his credits again, and their reputation with sector management, never a bad thing. The TL jumped in a minute later and Alan showed him the roid he wanted as the captain just laughed, saying that it was pretty far out, if he thought people could find it, more power to him, and Alan laughed and said he was sure he’d be ok.

In a few hours, Alan had a shiny, new ore mine; well the offices were shiny and new at least. Ore mining is a dirty job, that’s why robots do much of the work humans once did, back in ancient history. It was dangerous and dirty and many people died or got weird sicknesses from being in a place humans were never made to be, but those days are over and even a rock fall doesn’t bother a metal muscleman much and they just sweep it up and sell it. Alan stood in his new office as Jake walked in with a smile,

“I knew you’d get the first station,” Jake said shaking his brothers’ hand.

“I don’t know, you and Sherri were really cooking there, I thought maybe you’d beat me to it.” Alan said honestly.

“Maybe I COULD have, but since I really don’t want a station any time soon you needn’t bother rushing, I just hope things go well for you.” Jake said seriously as Alan’s eyes popped, he was serious, and it made Alan happy to hear it.

“Why don’t you want a station, it’s a good home, and makes money for you, mostly on auto, and I know you’re close to affording one,” Alan said wandering.

“Maybe but it’s a sign your settling, and that this is exactly what you want, I’m not sure that’s what I want , I like ships, the bigger the better, and that’s what I want to do, and a nice corvette or cruiser can be fixed up to live in nicely. I just don’t want to look out the windows and see the same sights every time, it’s just not me.” He explained as Alan smiled. He knew what he was talking about, but what he saw as a rut most people saw as being dependable and steady. Or maybe Alan was thinking about it all wrong, naa, that can’t be he thought and just smiled.

“So, you’ll be moving in here then?” Jake asked as Alan nodded,

“Yep since I own the place there’s no rent to pay the rooms here are for owners and their really a suite, so I can entertain anytime I like, and it shows women that I can be trusted and I’m a success.” Alan said smiling as Jake just laughed out loud.

“You never did get it did you, women don’t all want someone whose settled down and dependable, sometimes they want excitement, and a little danger and craziness, just once and a while, and they can enjoy it as much as we do. Tomorrow they can settle down and have kids and be pillars of the community, but they want to have fun while their young too.” Jake said smiling as Alan gave him a serious look, if that was what made Jake such a success, then now he understood, Jake wasn’t abusing women, he was just being as crazy as they wanted at the time, and they appreciated it more than some guy acting too serious about everything. It explained a lot, and even that first good night he had with the girl at the party, he was being soft and kind, and she wanted wild and crazy and he just didn’t see it, what a waste that was.

“Thanks for the tip,” Alan said seriously shaking Jakes hand, “you’ll always have a place to crash here, just remember that.” He said as Jake smiled and they both went back to their ships, Alan had some moving to do and Jake, well, had to go be Jake, and Alan wished him well.

Alan s plan was simple, to him at least. He would run his business, taking his 2% from the locals for his law enforcement services, and use his freighter to run for E cells. He had already seen that the nearest E cells were in Aladna Hill and that was ok with him, it meant his ship didn’t need to fly through Brennans Triumph ever time for a load and that could have gotten expensive really fast. He had the good Nova Raider and he knew Jake would come through a lot looking for his 2% and doing some of the local pirates so they would see each other from time to time, and he was happy with that. He got his first 2% deposit a week later and it looked really good to someone starting out in business. He flew around the system from time to time and even into the neighboring systems to watch for threats to his ships and things were going very well.

The sector manager was as good as his word and Alan had several stations right there making pickups, so deliveries weren’t really needed, at least for now, and in a little while, he started getting orders from as far away as Thuruks Beard and he knew he was going to be a success. Now he just hoped Jake did as well and then they would finally have proved that they could make it as Brennan’s in a universe where a lot was expected from them.

Chapter 6: A Different Kind of Business

Jake was thrilled for Alan, he had what he wanted and he did it very early on, now it was up to Jake to decide what he wanted and when he wanted it. He loved ships, big ones small ones, all types and designs. The thing is ships are expensive and even though he could afford a very nice one right now he had bigger plans. He continued to work, doing convoys and hunting pirates and even captured a ship or two, nothing big a harrier once and a buster, but it added to his credit pile and Sherri, god bless her was very punctual, and she was always very happy to see him. She made him smile for a few days every time and the credit chip she gave him kept growing too. Then there was the “tiny little” 2% Alan had negotiated for them in Danas Chance and Jake was seriously thinking maybe a corvette was in his future.

He was sitting eating dinner one day when he overheard a conversation next to him, he didn’t listen in on purpose but they guys were pretty loud. It appeared the one guy had sold a ship he captured to a mercenary shipyard somewhere north of Brennans triumph and said they had a big variety of ships there. Some were years old others were almost new but they were all fix ups and being sold for maybe half their original prices, some even less. They appeared to have an assortment of every type of older ship and some not so old they “found” or salvaged from the nearby systems. Jake took a serious note to this and decided that a new exploratory trip was in order and wandered back towards his ship.

Jake left the station knowing close to where the shipyard would be, even with his grandfather owning a shipyard he couldn’t get even good used stuff for less than half, or at least he was determined to not have to ask. It seemed like the kind of thing the family would expect from him, and he liked to surprise people from time to time. He entered Brennans Triumph and started north, he had never been this way so he had to find the gate first, that didn’t turn out to be a problem as it was being guarded by two fighters as he approached.

“This gate is closed to all but mercenary pilots turn back or be destroyed.” The call came in, as Jake answered with a loud laugh of his own, to their immediate puzzlement.

“I’m Jake Brennan, and our family INVENTED mercenary work, so let me pass or die.” He said waiting with an itchy finger as the two ships waited for some kind of confirmation and to Jakes surprise he was given access.

“It appears Brennans are welcome here, sorry for the inconvenience,” the lead ship said as Jake flew past and into the gate. Jake smiled to himself, after all the stories his dad and grandfather had told, he wasn’t sure any were true, but this answered about a million questions he had for his grandfather that he had never asked.

Jake flew into a very secure sector, it had several stations in it and a shipyard, but Jake wanted to see what was really going on here so he went to the first mercenary station to see. He opened his cockpit door to see a man grab him and throw him against a wall. Jake punched him hard and dropped him like a rock, but turned to see another man holding a blaster on him.

“Halt, and stand still for the search or you’ll die right here.” He said aiming carefully.

“He’s clean,” the first man said after getting to his feet and patting Jake down.

“Sorry, man didn’t know.” Jake said as the first guy just smiled.

“You’d be surprised how often that happens, “he said with a chuckle and Jake did too.

“Where’s the bar?” Jake asked as both guys got a laugh and they held him into the room at the end of the hall. The guard was a lot more at ease now, but there were guns showing everywhere Jake looked, and this made him think he might be underdressed and decided that it was probably necessary. He asked the bartender for a drink and when he came back he leaned in and asked who to speak to about a new gun, the bartender didn’t even blink and motioned towards the woman at the end of the room, sitting very carefully with her back against the wall. Jake could see that she was serious about her work and her back, and he could certainly understand. He got up and walked very carefully to her table and pointed to the opposite chair, she gave him a serious look and nodded, he sat down, and she immediately asked for his name.

“Jake Brennan,” he replied and after a second she smiled and sat with BOTH hands on the table for the first time.

“That’s a famous name around here and in argon space as well.” She said as Jake just shrugged and took a drink.

“I appear to be underdressed, can you help me with that?” he asked as she just nodded and asked what he was looking for.

“Something useable, but not exceptionally bulky,” Jake said with a grin and she just shook her head, they got up and she led him to a small storage room where she shut the door, BEFORE turning on the lights. Jake was impressed, and for Jake to be impressed by guns alone was something right there. He had always known how to shoot one, it was part of everyone’s training, but this place was the Argonmart of guns, he swore a few of these could be fitted to his ship, he thought and laughed out loud, to the immediate glee of his host.

“See anything you like,” she asked.

“Ya, everything, but for now…” Jake looked around and walked over to see a good looking set of guns hanging on a hook on the wall. He carefully pulled one from the holster and checked it over it was used for sure and with a careful examination he saw a chipped grip and maybe some kind of crack in a lens, he returned it and set that holster to the side and checked the next one, it was much better and the holster looked like new.

“Maybe this one,” he said turning holding it out for her to see.

“What’s wrong with that one?” she asked and Jake said seriously, “bad lens and it’s been beat too badly to be reliable.” To which she seemed moderately impressed.

“Most people don’t take much time to look here, “she admitted

“Most people might not know how, or let you scare them into it.” Jake said with a chuckle, and her eyes popped and she had a smile all too wide. “How much?”

They agreed on a price and went back to the bar with Jake wearing his new gun, and everyone in the room noticed, so he was careful not to move too quickly. He sat back down and she bought him another drink and asked what he was doing in their little sector. He said he was looking for a new ship and at the sound of that her eyes opened wide but she was very careful what she said,

“Not so loud, there are guys here who will kill you for a lot less.” She said seriously and Jake nodded.

“See Bolo Bo at the shipyard, tell him I sent you, he’ll take good care of you, if you cant find something you like there, just say what it is, he’ll find it.” She said as Jake gulped his drink and walked away. Nice kid, she thought, if he lives.

Jake flew to the station and docked he asked for Bolo Bo and was escorted to an office. He could help but notice he was escorted everywhere which wasn’t so bad but it did make him feel and little uncomfortable, but he was getting used to it.

“Ok, kid what do you want with me?” Bolo Bo asked without a lot of small talk.

“I’m looking for a good ship; it doesn’t have to be new, but definitely in good shape.” Jake said as the Boron nodded.

“Any particular design?” he asked to which Jake said,

“The bigger the better,” This got a smile and the guard was asked to leave, Bolo Bo brought up pictures of novas and a few other ships that Jake had seen but nothing he liked and for the prices they were asking he was sure he’d get something bigger yet.

“What about corvettes?” he asked and Bolo seemed even more happy and pulled up three ships pictures and showed him, he saw all these in space one was from Yaki shipyards a few years ago, great speed, but bad shields. The next was from argon, good all around, but not what he was looking for. The third looked a lot like the one his dad had in storage in the dock, an old Marauder, and even though he grew up playing in and around it, it still wasn’t just right.

“Any thing bigger?” Jake asked as even Bolo got a shocked look. The screen changed again and on it was one ship, it was an odd looking thing, Jake had never seen anything like it, it was flat and wide and, well, purple. It was an unusual design but it looked fast, and the specs said it had great firepower and a big cargo area too.

“What’s that?” Jake asked smiling as Bolo got a huge grin.

“An older Ka’ak frigate, we captured it a while ago, they still seem to spy on us sometimes, but this one didn’t get away. It can be modified to use some of our guns, but not all and all the Kyon emitters are gone, so without some new guns, I wouldn’t suggest you try flying it home.” He said with a chuckle. It needed a few repairs and several new guns, but it was really, really, good looking., Jake decided, and he asked the price, as is, and even he had to step back a second to think.

“It’s a capitol ship kid; they AREN’T cheap by any standards.” Bolo said seriously, Jake wasn’t as far off as Bolo might think but he couldn’t do it today for sure, but then maybe soon. He asked him what the total would be, max tune-ups and new guns and good shields and it really didn’t go up much, so Jake said he’d give him 25% up front and the rest when he came back, and Bolo took the deal. This kid really knew ships, and if he got anywhere near what he was asking, he’d be getting one, he decided.

A Kha’ak frigate that could get interesting. When Jake goes for something he sure goes big. That's a large leap from a M4, will make for a exciting learning experience.

Nice to see Alan finally getting his first station, with the few other decent asteroids near by he should be able to make a very comfortable living.

Can't wait till the next installment. A quite enjoyable story so far. Keep up the great work.

Show off! :)

Nice work again! But a Kha'ak destroyer? I thought they were 59 or was it 69ms in the speed stakes?
So Jake forgets to use IFF when jumping in to Argon Prime and gets plastered as a Kha'ak invader....?

Chapter 7: Hard Work, For a Purpose

Jake left the system a lot poorer than when he came in, but he was sure he could handle the pressure. After all another two weeks and Sherri would be dropping a nice chip his way and that would help a lot. The sector taxes would be coming in again and he was sure he had as good a chance at bounties as he ever did, he decided to save every penny for the next few weeks, absolutely every cent, and after making the decision he was ready to start building up some cash, real quick.

He went back through Brennans Triumph and into Danna’s Chance when he saw three light fighters and dropped them like a bad dream. He flew around a little and called Alan to see how things were going and Alan was happy to hear from him.

“I put a down payment on MY new ship.” Jake said proudly as Alan smiled and nodded, he didn’t ask, but he knew Jake was doing very well and had a lot to work with. The fact he put a “payment” down said volumes and he couldn’t wait to see what his nutty brother would come up with.

“Good to hear, will I be surprised?” Alan asked as Jake started laughing out loud.

“Only if you’re breathing,” he said and Alan smiled and shook his head, maybe he really was looking at a cruiser, but then that wouldn’t surprise Alan that much, he had been warned.

“Well good luck then a little short at the moment? I see you’re talking about making payments.” Alan said fishing a little.

“Yep, not as bad as the guy thought, but definitely short, I got him doing some repairs and getting it set up, so in a few weeks I’ll be ok I think, but have to go, hard work ahead.” He said and Alan just laughed and told him to be careful, and he nodded and went through the next gate.

Jake was working his way towards Light of Heart, he knew there was a lot of pirate traffic in these sectors, and he was on the lookout for anything he thought he could handle. He found a pair of Busters by the east gate and in a few minutes toasted them. He didn’t get bounties for his argon law license here, but he did get all the loot from the wrecks and a good chance at a capture, which would go a long way toward his bill at the shipyard. He gathered his loot and jumped east again. He found a lone Falcon heading towards him and they didn’t seem to want trouble, but he was ready. They went by and he swung around behind and started to close. It was probably a freight hauler for a pirate base, and he wasn’t looking to start it, but then Jake was.

He hit him from behind with a good hard punch and the ship started to turn, true to form the big fighter was slow turning and Jake had no problem staying behind him. After a few good hits it looked like Jake was about to pop another one when the pilot saw certain death coming and bailed. Jake had to stop short to keep from running into the back of it, and he saw the pilot traveling towards the nearest station, he hoped he made it, he needed friends like this. He pulled along side and added his codes and the big ship was his. He backed off just a tad and sent it orders to fly to Light of Heart and he followed it there for safety.

Jake had heard the stories for many years from his father and grandfather about captured ships. You always remove as much stuff as you can up front then sell the ship. Jake wasn’t fond of falcons anyways, they seemed old and slow and he was looking for some quick cash and never thought to check the ship until it docked. He removed the two HEPT’s it had and several good missiles he could use and sold the fighter right there. To his surprise he got a really good price and he didn’t ask any questions as he decided to get out before they found their mistake. He flew out of the sector with a wide grin. He had a great day and he was sure if his luck kept up he’d be good when the ship was ready. He flew right back to Alan’s station to tell him this great story and how dumb the station had been.

“So they gave you how much for an old Falcon?” Alan asked as they sat and ate a bite together.

“Double what I thought it was worth, and believe me I didn’t wait to explain either.” Jake said laughing as Alan sat dissecting all this info.

“Don’t start by telling me to return all that money either, it s was their mistake and I need the money so I’m keeping it.” Jake said as Alan finally started to smile.

“Ok, brains, what did you figure out?” Jake finally asked.

“You said it ignored you until you attacked and it was flying really slow and didn’t give much of a fight?” Alan asked and Jake nodded and continued to eat.

“Did you scan to see what it was hauling?” Alan asked as Jake stopped to consider.

“Nope just took the extra guns and missiles and sold it, why?” he asked as Alan sat with a big smile.

“I think your faction with the pirates just went UP,” Alan thought as Jake was totally confused.

“You may have finished making a delivery that no one planned and was paid for it.” Alan said laughing out loud as Jake thought, my word, a ship full of space weed or space fuel certainly was expensive that’s for sure, maybe he should have checked, it might have been worth a lot more, but then I might have lost it too, he decided that he did the best thing and Alan agreed, but somewhere in Light of Heart there was a party going on tonight, he thought laughing.

Alan listened to his stories and told him about how well things were going there. They both laughed and in a little while Jake decided to go. Alan asked again what ship he was getting and he wouldn’t say, he said he’d surprise him when the time came and Alan just laughed and let it go. He knew that if Jake was spending that much on a ship he was planning on being in it for quite a while so it had to be big.

Jake started home from Alan’s station just in time to hit another pirate patrol traveling towards the east gate. It was more than he could handle alone and he waited till they started to leave and rushed in. He shot up a buster and a buzzard and got away before the bigger ships realized what had happened. He was all smiles and went through Brennans Triumph and straight home. He had done a few things he wanted today, he saw his next ship and put a payment on it and made enough to put most of that back. With another week like this he might just be able to go get it, he thought, but this was an exceptional day and he knew tomorrow could not be as good.

The next day he searched for convoys and got one going to Danna’s Chance, the captain said that the sector was starting to really open up and there was a lot of business going on there, so Jake was happy to see some good money being made nice and close. He escorted the convoy in and got the job of escorting finish materials back out but had to do some serious flying before he left Brennans Triumph again.

They were almost to the gate when a patrol hit them and Jake was working at top speed to keep from losing any ships. He managed it just barely but the pirates lost 4 busters and a harrier and Jake heaved a sigh of relief when the last one popped. The convoy captain thanked him for such good work and he got a bonus for stopping 4 pirate ships himself, and his reputation grew again. He wasn’t sure he could have done it with bigger ships, but then he made good money today and that was the name of the game, he needed another 1.2 million and he wasn’t doing too badly with escort money and all the bonuses and he was still waiting on Sherri and his next 2% check from Danna’s Chance then he would be able to see what was happening even better. The last chip from Sherri had been really nice and he was making about 100k a day in bounties, so he was sure he was going to make it, just a few more days escorting and a few more skipped meals and he’d just squeeze through, he thought with a big smile and went to bed.

Jake was starved in the morning and had to get a good breakfast. If he was going to kill himself flying this week he was going to have to eat a few good meals to do it. After all 10 credits wasn’t enough one way or the other on a bill the size he had, but a good meal might mean the whole world to him if he got busy and couldn’t stop when he wanted. So he decided that skipping meals was not a luxury he could afford and had a good breakfast be fore going out to work.

He stopped by the BBS and found a mission for one going to Red Light it was a small mission but it paid well and it seemed legal enough. He took it and they were in Red Light in an hour and everyone was happy. There he found a mission going to Danna’s Chance again and he took it thinking he might save a few credits anyway by stopping at Alan’s station for a bite at lunch, and he smiled to think he was being so frugal, but it was for a good purpose and he couldn’t wait to see what the big monster was like in a fight, if anyone would fight with him, he smiled to think he could fly missions all over space and very few people would have a big enough ego to go up against something like that. He could start a whole new business, with things like sector control missions and convoy escorts right through pirate sectors. Maybe he was thinking a little big, but it kept him going all day.

Jake and his convoy went right through Brennans Triumph and not a person said a word to him, it was rare, but the convoy captain said Jake was getting quite the reputation and he wasn’t surprised, but Jake was, he just didn’t say anything about it. They made it to the station and he was paid and called Alan to see what he was up to and he invited him for lunch, which was exactly what Jake was hoping they sat and talked and Alan was really surprised Jake was working so hard all of a sudden and he said so, but Jake just smiled and said that he just needs a good reason to work hard and he thought he’d found it. Alan was thrilled to see his brother being so hardworking suddenly and he didn’t push him to see what he was getting, Jake made it clear that he would be one of the first people to know when he got it and Alan said that was good enough for him.

Chapter 8: Time runs out

Jake was thrilled the way things were going after a week he was going to the BBS shaved and clean dressed and with a tad of aftershave one of his friends had given him. If neatness says anything about you, he thought then he wanted businessmen to think he was an Admiral in disguise. After that thought he had to get a good laugh even if the people around him didn’t know why, but he had it all figured out and another week like this, working 14 hours a day would just do what he needed and he was sure remembering the specs for the big ship, that he wouldn’t need an apartment anymore after that. He was going to have a beautiful, traveling home and it would have TEETH, he thought and smiled as he accepted another mission to Three Worlds. This was a good one, with several ships and they were traveling through some of the safest sectors to do it, so he was all smiles, and Sherri was due to see him tomorrow, and he wanted to see that woman more now than ever before.

They were off and traveling when he got the call, Bolo Bo was on the line and said that his ship was ready. It was tuned to the max , at least that they knew how to do, and had turrets full of AHEPT’s on it, and Jake was smiling wide, now he was told to come get it in three days or someone else was going to get it instead. He pleaded saying he was still a little short and Bolo held solid saying he wanted him in his station in three days for a meeting and they’d see. Jake was not happy and he was sure being 500k down was going to be the death of his deal, and probably his deposit as well. He finished the escort and ran to see about another but there wasn’t anything he could do here, so in defeat he started back towards home.

He stopped at the next trading station but again there wasn’t anything he could do that was worth his time. He needed at least 6 high paying jobs and he wasn’t having any luck finding them. He turned to leave when a guy walked up smiling.

“Your Jake Brennan right?” he asked as Jake just nodded.

“I recognize you from the mercenary station bar, listen I’m in a pinch here, we have a mission going on and we’re like 3 guys short, some morons got hammered and are in jail and we could loose a big contract for argon if we fail this, so would you be interested in doing a mission with my group? It’ll pay big time and you’ll get good reputation with argon and the mercenary guild too, how about it?” he asked seriously and Jake swallowed hard. It was an answer to his prayers, sort of but he had said the magic words, good rep and great pay and Jake accepted.

“You do know how to use that right?” he asked looking down at Jakes new gun and Jake just nodded and he smiled,

“Good because you’ll need it, we have to do a rescue mission from a pirate base, and we’re going to assault it with 12 guys, well, 10 guys now. I’ll have you stand guard on the ship and keep everyone away till we find the agent and get back on board, its time so lets go.” He said and Jake followed him to the docks and into a corvette setting there. He sat down as the big ship pulled out and recognized at least one or two guys from the station that night. They didn’t seem too impressed with him, and he was sure they had worked together many times, that makes him the new guy, and he’d have to prove himself before they could learn to trust him.

The ship started to zig and zag and in a few minutes the guys were told to be ready, Jake checked his gun and it wasn’t even set on high, but he adjusted it and checked to see it was in working order. The charge was good and he’d have lots of shots to use if he needed them and he was sure he would. He replaced it in his holster until the ship came to a slow stop, the words was that they were docking and there were two guards, the first guy was a monster of a man and he stepped up and drew his gun close to the door, it opened and he dropped the two guards in a second. The rest of the team rushed forward, and Jake stepped out gun in hand and watched them disappear into the station. In a minute another guard came running out and Jake hit him quickly and he went down. He waited again and what seemed like days was going by. There was a sound and he saw two guys running his way, he dropped beside the nose of the ship as they started firing, and he returned fire.

They were in open territory and he had a ship to hide behind, and he managed to hit one and he went down. The second turned and ran away obviously looking for help and Jake was sure to watch in his direction. In another few minutes there was a big ruckus as Jake saw the monster man come running out, with someone over his shoulder. Jake made sure the door was opened and as one man, the team rushed past him and he jumped inside just as the ship started to move again. He hit the emergency door button and the ship sealed almost as the doors of the station opened and they rushed out. The fight wasn’t over and the corvette dodged and weaved and the turrets were firing steadily. The crew said nothing, and the agent they were after was in bad shape. It was obvious he was being beaten and tortured and argon needed him out or dead and he was lucky to be alive. In a few minutes the jump drive kicked in and they made it safely away, but when they docked it was at the mercenary base and Jake was without a ship. He stepped out as the team, up till now very solemn and silent started yelling and laughing and Jake was slapped on his back till he thought he’d lose his breath.

“Not bad for a little kid,” one merc said as his friends started laughing.

“New guy maybe, but not a little kid.” The other said and they led him into the bar and they celebrated a mission well done.

Jake was impressed these guys were ok, and now they accepted him as a friend. He was told their stories of how they were military that didn’t like the day to day grind, or guys marked as criminals who were trying to get some reputation back so they could go home. They each had a story and he smiled as they told him theirs, it made him seem more like the little kid the first guy called him than the new merc they gave him credit for. Finally one guy asked him why he was there and he just laughed and said he needed the money for a new ship, and they looked at each other seriously.

“You’re a Brennan right?” one guy asked and Jake said yes, but he wasn’t using his name for favors, he was making it on his own and he was determined not to ask for help. At this several men there just nodded and they all smiled. He told them of the great ship he saw and that Bolo was holding it for him but he was still a little short, and a couple started to chuckle and he asked why.

“We get all our ships from Bolo, as do everyone else here, how short are you?” he was asked and he looked around and finally said he wasn’t sure he wasn’t paid here yet and they said yes, you are the second we dock we are paid and that’s why we all wait to cheer and celebrate, it shows a successful completion of a mission and Jake checked his account, he was still 150k short but it looked a lot better for sure. He got a ride over to the shipyard and Bolo was waiting all smiles, he shook Jakes hand and said he had just heard about the mission, and Jake had done very well, for a new guy. Jake was all smiles and he wandered how he heard so soon, and Bolo just said they were like family and what happens gets around quick. Jake told him he was still a little short and Bolo smiled, saying the teams often need a good solid backup, and if he would help them sometime, he could have it for what Jake had, and they shook hands and Jake was the new owner of a slightly used, never lived in, Ka’ak frigate, and Jake decided to call it his mercenary assault vessel, and he smiled as it pulled away from the shipyard to horns and waves from a lot of his new friends.

Jake started checking it over and the computer was up and running so he got a good idea what he could do with it. It had 6 turrets and right now each had an AHEPT in it, but he had room for twice that may. It had a top speed of 115 but right now was doing about 90, and it was modified to hold 1 gig shields, 6 of them, but at the moment it had 2- 125 Meg shields on it instead. It had a big cargo area and since the Ka’ak don’t care about amenities it was basically an empty warehouse inside, but that didn’t bother Jake he had plans and he knew exactly where to start. Right this second he had a very large corvette class with upgrade potential and he didn’t think a lot of guys were going to want to mess with it even as is. Of course he was wrong and he soon found out.

Jake decided that he needed his fighter and a safe place to store this while he worked on it and maybe a little help, so he started towards Danna’s Chance hoping for a safe passage on his looks alone, but not a chance. The first pirate to scan it saw the 250 Meg of shields and informed a few others, he was under attack before he passed the pirate base and he was upset. He turned the turrets on them and adjusted them so 75% were set to offence and 25% set for defense and it helped a lot. The turrets did short work of a few small fighters and mediums didn’t do any better, but Jake was sure he’d run out of shields before he reached the gate, he was taking a pounding by missiles and the turrets were getting a few too, so they were throwing a lot at him and he was happy it held together this long, just as he jumped through to Danna’s Chance.

The sector manager was livid, not only was there an enemy frigate in sector it was being followed by a few pirate ships as well. Alan got a call and ran out to see. He didn’t know what the bezany he’d do against this monster but the pirates he was sure of. Just then the coms buzzed and Jake was on the link.

“Can you get these guys off me for a second so the shields can come up?” he asked as Alan’s eyes popped out, no wander he was working 14 hour days this moron bought a destroyer or something, and Alan laughed as he helped the turrets clean away the filth that seemed to cling to it at the moment.

A few minutes later Jake informed sector control he owned the frigate not to call argon in but a second a Titan was in bound and Jake had to explain what had happened again. He knew what was going to happen next, he even relished it, but one by one the family called and either laughed a lot or ask him what he was thinking, and he said, “you just wait till I get this all fixed up, it’ll be my own suite and I’ll be living like a king.” Everyone just laughed and he asked Alan if he could park it next to his station while he worked on it and he said yes, it was going to be a huge project, and Alan walked through it to see what he had in mind, he only needed a few thousand in equipment and parts, but the work itself was going to take a while, and they laughed and the big rebuild was started.

Superlatives fail at this point! So, very nice and keep up the good work!
9/10 (Ten out of ten might give you a big head! :D

Jake didn't expect any trouble upon entering Friendly sectors, especially after not calling ahead first and flying a fearsome beastie?

Chapter 9: Home Sweet Home

Jake took the frigate out to Alan’s station and parked it quietly beside it. He was quite a ways out here and no one would think about it until he got some work done. He immediately called for his Buster and sent it to the Goner Temple in Cloudbase Southwest, he needed some things badly and a lot of equipment and tools, and furniture, but he needed a way to get it all on board, and even this frig only had one docking port and it wasn’t for a transporter class. He knew he had just made some credits passing through Brennans Triumph which was going to help, but he was more planning on the sector control money and good ole Sherri to keep him going and set up his ship. He needed more shields badly, and more guns, and…well more everything. It would be expensive but he had gotten it for a song compared to what it would be worth later, and he was part of a new team and someday they would want his help again. Now all he needed was a little time, some help, and some money and the future was sure to take care of itself.

Alan asked what he wanted to do first and Jake said he was going to live here he needed some place to sleep and eat, so they left the ship on auto and went to the station for supplies. Since every trading station has a big assortment of apartments they rent, they also have equipment and furniture sales for replacements and upgrades. Some people live their whole lives in an apartment, so upgraded stuff was important to them. Jake got a nice sofa, chair and entertainment center/computer system with coms video. It was a good basic system, but a bit better than standard. He got a very good replicator, with all the options; it could make food, small replacement parts, and even cloths, and so he figured he had it covered. He then bought some big hanging drapes he liked as Alan’s mouth flew open,

“Drapes in a ship, where are you planning on hanging them, you don’t have THAT many windows.” Alan said laughing, but Jake ordered the biggest he could get and soon Alan’s fighter was getting full and Jakes money was getting low and they returned to the ship with their cargo. They worked that afternoon till they looked like they’d fall down. The big drapes went over the metal walls in a big area where Jake made his living space. It made the whole place look warmer, and less metallic and Alan was impressed. He set up the replicator between the living area and the bridge so he could get food or coffee or even some small parts without being too far from the controls. The living space was setting up nice as the big sofa went right in front of the big widescreen entertainment center. Jake took the wireless antennae out and attached it to the ship and Alan called directions till he got the best signal and balance on the coms link. He wasn’t too sure about Ka’ak coms so this gave him all new options.

The chairs and bed were arranged and Jake kept walking around moving things a little here or there as Alan had the first cup of coffee from the new machine. It took a while but the fighter was emptied and a living area was established and Jake was smiling as he thanked Alan for his help and they both collapsed on the big sofa with their drinks in hand. Jake lifted his new remote and in a second the coms link was on and after a few buzzes it was answered and there stood Alan Sr, with a huge grin on his face.

“Well, I’m in and set up, so you don’t need to worry.” Jake said as Alan Jr. waved.

“I see the two of you look beat, been at it a while then?” he asked laughing as Jake and Alan laughed along too.

“I’m a little short on cash right now but this will more than fix that with a little more work.” Jake said smiling and Alan Sr. agreed, he could simply fly through a sector and the law license would do all the work and he knew that’s a lot of what he had in mind.

“Got some good shields and weapons ready have you?” Alan Sr. asked in a more serious tone.

“250Meg in shields at the moment, but it has a capability of 1 gig shields, at least a few so that will help later.” Jake said as Alan Sr. dropped his eyes to think, Jake saw this and quickly said he wasn’t going to use it for work right now, he wanted at least 1 – 1 gig shield and some more guns, maybe BPAC’s before going out looking for trouble, until then he was sitting at Alan’s base and doing the work and getting paid for sector defense. Alan Sr. laughed and shook his head, even not moving it was getting paid and only Jake could see a way to do that, he thought, as the boys said good bye and the link went closed.

“Good long distance check, good clear signal and now mom and dad won’t worry so badly.” Jake said with a flourish that Alan started to see more often, they both laughed and saluted each other with coffee cups and sat back to relax and watch the channel. Jake had to get some rest tonight, he had overworked and was sore and stiff, and he needed to be at his best for his meeting with Sherri tomorrow, she deserved no less. Alan got up to leave and Jake asked to borrow his ship tomorrow morning and Alan asked why, Jake said his was in cloud base southwest and until he got some more credits he couldn’t get the jump drive to get it there without flying through the pirate sector unmanned, and he didn’t want to lose it, he also said he had a business meeting he had to be at and Alan just laughed, his meetings with Sherri were a lot more than a business meeting, but then it was business, so he said yes and went home and sent the ship back on auto as Jake laid down and fell asleep in his new home.

Jake got up slowly the next morning and replicated some pain pills and took a few. He then sat down to eat breakfast and remembered he didn’t buy a table and chairs, so he sat eating at the navigation station. He looked around the bridge slowly and decided he needed to do something about this, he knew what some of these controls were, but some were a complete mystery and he didn’t read Ka’ak, so that didn’t help.

“Computer, can we create a Kha’ak translation device?” he asked and the computer said he could, it instructed him to go to the replicator, choose “electronics” and then the universal translator, he did and it started to glow and he finished his meal, and in a few minutes the process was done. He had a small device that looked a little like a remote and he asked the range and specs and the computer said it would translate all within 50 feet and he was impressed, he turned it on and laid it in the middle of the main bridge station and like magic all the stations could be read now in clear argon. He saw now that he hadn’t had the turret auto targeting on at all, and wandered how he did so well coming through Brennans triumph, he sat up all his defenses again and even could check and reroute power from place to place. While it was sitting here he rerouted power from the engines to the shield recharger just in case and it added 25% faster recharge. He made sure the turrets were on defense, no need to mess with anyone coming to Alan’s station no matter what, and then he made a hasty trip to Elena’s Fortune to see Sherri, and get his next chip.

He was a little early, but that was good and he was there when she came in and docked. As usual she ran in all smiles and gave him a huge kiss and they spent the afternoon just being together and then Jake took her out for a good meal and she was thrilled. He kissed here warmly and she waved as she entered her ship to leave again and Jake even mentioned that Danna’s Chance was starting to boom and it might be good business to check it out, but only with a jump drive, he didn’t want her flying through Brennans triumph in a freighter and she hugged him again and thanked him for worrying about her. She left and Jake went back to Alan’s fighter and collapsed in the pilots seat, he had done it and she was happy and so was he, but in the future he had to remember that this girl was really, really good at whatever she does, and he had to be in better shape to keep up after yesterday, and he laughed and thought he might just marry her if she waits long enough, and started back.

Jake had a good amount of credits now and used Alan’s trading system extension to order the jump drive and a transporter device from the Goners. He had a little extra so he ordered a small amount of insurance on his new ship through them too…it wasn’t much but if he survived whatever happened to it he could afford another fighter at least, and he was all smiles as he had it loaded with all the energy cell it could carry and jumped it to Alan’s station to wait for him. He took his time going home and a few pirates took a shot at him but he wasn’t worried, he had told Alan that these fighters were a big improvement and after just a few minutes he had proved it. He took down a buster and two harriers and made a few credits going home. Now he was going to be in better shape, he had a jump drive and his fighter to fly for cells to power it and the transporter device to help gather cargos and beam people in and out. It was getting better and better and he could see that this was going to be just what he had always wanted, and he smiled widely to think that.

Chapter 10: Back to Work

Jake docked the Nova at Alan’s station and went upstairs to see how well he had survived the work yesterday, and Alan didn’t look much better, and they both laughed and then grabbed their stomachs and sat down, they really, really hurt, especially Jake and he was the one taking pills.

“So did you see Sherri?” Alan asked knowing the truth already.

“Oh, yes, my little love is doing very well, and I even mentioned that the sector here was booming, so maybe we may see her from time to time.” Jake said with a painful grin.

“That had to hurt,” Alan said laughing as easily as he could and Jake started too yelling,

“You bastard, don’t make me laugh!” but they both couldn’t help it and they both hurt badly, even now.

“I may just marry that woman, well… someday.” Jake said as Alan’s eyes popped out, he had never heard his brother ever mention settling with one woman, she was exceptional to say the least, and Alan wandered if she had a sister, and he laughed again but thankfully Jake didn’t know why and didn’t care right now.

“Well got my new jump drive and a transporter device for cargo and people now all I need is a better shield and I can go hunting, “Jake said finally and Alan nodded, he had seen that he had a few HEPT’s on board so with better shields the local pirates wouldn’t stand much of a chance.

“How many weapons can it carry?” Alan asked as Jake tried hard not to laugh again and just said,

“A lot, I have room for twice as many guns in the turrets, that’s what it was made for, with 6 turrets pointing in every direction no one can sneak up on it, and offence will be awesome.” Jake said and Alan nodded, he had a good ship and Alan had never seen him so happy with anything, so he was happy for him too.

“And it can handle a lot of different missiles too?” Alan asked and Jake nodded saying the old launcher was taken out and a new standard launcher was added, he could fire almost whatever he picked up and that was going to help a lot. He knew with the transporter device he could beam in any cargo within 5 km and that gave him an advantage on both weapons and gaining cargo that could be resold. In a big fight he could gather missiles even while the fight went on and Alan was impressed to say the least, his brother sounded like he had planned this since his first day of life, he had every detail worked out and all he needed was some more credits or a little help and Alan smiled knowing he wasn’t going to be doing anything for at least another day.

“Well, I’m happy for you, so you better get some rest and get healed up before you start running around.” Alan said as Jake had a hard time just getting up from the sofa.

“Bet on it.” He said and threw Alan the pill bottle he was carrying and Alan thanked him and he left and went back to his ship.

Jake took a little break and then transferred the transporter device to the big ship. Then he used it to move the jump drive and smiled, the cells that were on the fighter were enough to give him a 2 sector jump in an emergency and he was all about emergency things and he was happy. He knew where the nearest energy cells could be bought but he wasn’t sure he wanted to risk sending his fighter to Aladna Hill alone, but he decided it was worth the risk, it ran ahead as he sat with a cup and admired his new home. He was very happy here and he was sure that he’d do very well, eventually. He sat and watched the long range scanners till the fighter was into the next sector and decided to go lay down a while. It would continue to the power plant and wait on his instructions and he wasn’t in a big hurry right this second, and he fell asleep and dreamed of good fights and saved damsels in distress.

Jake woke up a little later to a call on the coms; he rolled over slowly and sat up. There was a freighter captain on the coms asking him if he was going to unload him or if he wanted him to drop his cargo. Jake was confused and asked what he was carrying and the captain just rolled his eyes and said it was Jakes delivery of 15 silkworm missiles and Jake jumped up and said to hold position and he beamed them onboard. The captain said the load was prepaid and Jake thanked him and he just smiled saying it would be nice to see one of these doing some good for a change and Jake just smiled and the freighter went away. Jake stood for a second smiling, this was great, and he was getting better and better by the minute. It must have been Alan, he thought, he asked what missiles he could carry and here a few hours later were the missiles, and good ones at that. He commed across to see Alan sitting doing some paperwork and he smiled.

“Thanks, Bro, I owe you for this,” Jake said and Alan said he’d make him do some serious work when he wanted to remodel his place. Jake just laughed and said no, he meant the missiles he sent and in a second he could see that Alan was at a loss as much as he was, and Jake told him the story.

“A good idea, but it wasn’t me,” Alan said and they both sat thinking and decided that maybe Alan Sr. had something to do with it, he knew after all and it sounded like him to want to help, but as they talked back and forth another voice came across,

“I see you received the shipment, that’s splendid, we decided that since you were obviously going to great lengths to protect us here we’d chip in a little extra to help. Especially since you were so kind in asking for a mere 2% fee,” The station manager said smiling, and Jake thanked him and smiled.

“Think nothing of it, you’ve spent a good deal right here buying everything for your new ship from us and we have seen that the two of you seem very comfortable here, even opening a new station which helped us all, so we sent those as a thank you, along with your usual 2% for sector security, we certainly don’t have a problem with the way you do your jobs, we have never had it so good.” He said and smiling closed his part of the link.

“See, being nice to people pays off sometimes,” Alan said as Jake smiled and nodded this was even better and he now had enough for a decent shield, or maybe a couple more 125’s for now, but he’d decide later, he closed the link and loaded his fighter with cells and ordered it home.

Jake was in a great mood, things were just starting to go his way and he was thrilled. His fighter came running through and docked and he transferred the energy cells to his ship. He was in good shape for several short hops or one long one and he was happy about it. When he got the chance he’d get more energy cells, and maybe even find a few floating from time to time, and he was ready to give his new ship its first real cruise.

He decided that even with 250 Megs of shield and some small repairs still needed he had done pretty well coming through Brennans Triumph, he still needed a little more repairs and he was worried what that was going to cost, and at least another 125 Meg shield or two. Then he’d be able to get some work done without a lot of worry. When he got more money he’d be able to get better shields and he’d be a lot happier, but for now staying in small sectors and watching well ahead he’d be ok, and he started up the engines and decided that the equipment dock in Light of Heart would have 125 Meg shields, and he started that way.

Jake was flying around asteroids in Hatkivtwas Faith when he saw his first pirates and believe me, they saw him. He was trying to quietly make it to Light of Heart but he didn’t quite make it. He was in sight of the east gate into Aladna Hill when they hit. He had things set up a lot better now and he was really impressed by how accurate the turrets fired now. He took out three medium fighters before they did any damage at all, and only after he lost 30% of his shields did he finish off a Nova that was trying to circle him. The last ship tried to escape. But a silkworm finished him and Jake was very happy he did it all with shields to spare. He entered Aladna Hill to a screaming, yelling, station manager calling for all ships to respond they were under attack. Jake called right away to see what he was talking about and they said a Kha’ak warship just came through the gate, and Jake laughed as the manager gave him a dirty look and Jake informed him it was HIM. Not a Kha’ak invasion and the manager looked both relieved and upset at the same time.

“You should warn people that your flying that, and where in bezany did you get it?” he asked and Jake said he had good friends and they left it go at that. He started towards the south gate as a crowd of spectators started following along, taking pictures for the news ands asking questions until Jake said it was enough, and he called ahead into Light of Heart and warned them he was coming, to their immediate surprise. He entered as a Cruiser sat watching the gate and Jake said hi as he went past. The cruiser captain was cordial and asked him where he got it, and Jake just said he had some very tough friends and everyone let it go, like maybe regular military wasn’t supposed to know. Jake flew to the equipment dock and as he drifted under the structure to dock there were dozens of people standing at the windows watching as the great ship drifted in. Jake was in his glory and he was asked again and again where he got it, but he never did say. It was his secret and only Alan knew for sure.

Jake had done ok so far and with careful planning he’d do better. He got 2 new 125 Meg shields and checked to see that the dock didn’t have 1 gig shields anyway. He decided that since he had extra money that he got 2 new APAC’s and added them in place of the one HEPT in the rear gun slot and set it for missile defense, Then added the extra gun to the top turret, so it had a big sweep of the whole ship. He got a bunch of Mosquito missiles and some new software and set up a missile defense system and when he left, he was sure he had done as well as his funds permitted, and he was ready to start to do some real work.

Chapter 'Who cares?' Keep 'em coming.. :)

Well! A surprised Station Manager seeing an unannouced Kha'ak ship.. Would you believe it?

Twit should realise Kha'ak tend to jump in without using Gates, usually with protective clusters.

Nice flow to the story, though I did wonder, initially, if Jake was going to make a big dust sheet for his ship! Micro meteorite dust gets everywhere.

Chapter 11: It Hits the Fan

Now that Jake had officially been introduced in these sectors he was happy to think he wouldn’t drive people nuts on sight anymore at least. He went back through into Aladna Hill just in time to toast a pirate patrol coming the other way and the station manager was impressed. He then turned and decided to check out Akeela’s Beacon, he knew pirates hung out there and there was supposed to be a connecting path to several other sectors he hadn’t found yet. He flew through the gate and was told immediately that he was needed, as two freighters flew past him into the gate, screaming.

“There’s a raider patrol at the north gate and their killing EVERYONE if you can get there to help, or just run!” the lead freighter said as Jake calmly replied.

“I don’t run, so I’ll see what I can do.” He turned and hit the Seta and in a few minutes he approached the north gate. He didn’t even know exactly where that was but sensors said there were explosions and weapons fire so he followed that. What Jake saw didn’t make him feel any better, there were a dozen small ships attacking freighters and a TL near the gate. They were of a design he had never seen before and he made sure his computer was recording everything he saw. He was also sure that there were reinforcements coming soon, this kind of thing weren’t going to be tolerated anymore so he called for the raiders to stop or be fired on, and he needn’t bother. A group broke away from attacking the TL and went for him, he was surprised at their speed, and the TL captain thanked him and managed to get to the gate and jump away. Jake had his hands full for a few minutes, even with his new shields he was taking serious hits and the ships weren’t using regular lasers, they were more like Kyon emitters and he wandered if the Ka’ak were coming back. Luckily for him these were light fighters and one or two mediums, so the shields held and the little ships were taking a pounding.

By now the rest of the enemy force had seen the fight and dropped the last few ships they were doing to assist. Jake was starting to get worried, there were a lot more of them than he thought and he was losing shields quick now. He quickly started targeting and dropping missiles and got the upper hand quickly, but at a cost. He used almost all the missiles that sector management had given him but at least he had this situation under control when the argon carrier jumped in and started dropping fighters. He was quick to say he was a friend and the captain chuckled, saying they had already heard about him and his new ship. The word was out and Jake didn’t need to worry anymore. Jake was happy to hear it and was given a big pat on the back for all the dead ships they saw laying around. In a few minutes the fight was over and Jake had shields up again and the carrier said he was going to get a nice bonus for getting there and keeping the enemy from getting away.

Jake asked if he had ever seen ships like that before and he admitted he didn’t and Jake gave him all his sensor readings and vids he got during the fight. The captain was impressed that Jake thought so far ahead and asked him if he ever thought about joining the argon military and Jake just laughed, saying one Brennan in the military was enough and the captain looked a little embarrassed and they jumped away. After all, Jake thought, his aunt was the Commander of Argon Intelligence, and if that didn’t count as service nothing would.

It was nice and quiet now and for a second Jake was pleased with himself. He had taken on huge odds and won so he decided he deserved whatever he could find in this mess. He started gathering things and he saw several unknown missiles he quickly grabbed and a bunch of free energy cells, probably from freighters that didn’t get away. Then there were some mosquito missiles to replace some he used, and he was smiling that he was doing ok here after all. He worked over towards the gate again and found several more cargos there. More energy cells, and 100 units of silicon wafers, he knew he could sell those in Danna’s Chance, and in a tight little group where one unfortunate ship had died he got a huge surprise. One container had 2 – 5 gig shields and another 1- 10 gig shield, he was happy, knowing these were very expensive indeed, and Light of Heart would gladly take them. He got a few more mosquitos and finally the last cargo had 10- 25 Meg shields. Obviously this poor guy was making equipment dock runs and didn’t make it, but at least Jake was going to see that someone got to use them, so he turned and went back to Light of Heart and docked at the equipment dock again. They gladly bought all the shields from him and said they were waiting on a shipment that never came, and Jake told them the story and everyone looked surprised. There hadn’t been serious trouble like this in over 20 years and suddenly people started to worry. Jake got some great money from the stuff he sold and got the last 125 shield they had in stock, if he learned anything it was that he needed the best equipment available, and he was going to see he got it.

Jake was thanked repeatedly and he dropped away from the docks and slowly approached the cruiser at the gate,

“I have something you may want,” Jake started and the captain scanned his ship and saw the experimental missiles. His eyes popped and he took them at once. Jake was given a great price and he turned and stopped at the shipyard just to see what repairs DID cost for this. He wasn’t surprised and even with all that he had done today he got just 5% repairs, but it was nearly done now so he was sure he’d be ok for a while. He thanked them and moved away a safe distance and returned to Aladna Hill and went on and returned to Danna’s Chance. He got a few pirates along the way, but his mind was full of the little ships he had seen and fought, they were tough and beautiful at the same time. They were like nothing he had ever seen, thin, and very shiny, and very fast indeed. He was glad there wasn’t any corvette class there, at least not yet; he needed even bigger shields for those he saw sure.

He stopped along side Alan’s station and beamed over to talk. He told him what he saw and showed him copies of the fight vids and Alan looked worried. These weren’t pirates, and the closest thing he had ever seen was a few pictures of Dragoon ships, but they were friendly too, so maybe some new Dragoon offshoot looking for trouble?? They just shook their heads and talked, surely the word would get out, and they would find out for sure what was going on.

Jake asked Alan for a favor and he said sure what, and he told him he got 100 silicon wafers he needed to sell and Alan nodded, that wouldn’t be hard at all. He had his ship just sitting there, his station was full of energy cells, so Jake transported the silicon to it, and Alan sent it to the one station that used it and Jake got a good price. He thanked him and went home and got a good hot meal and sat watching the news when a report about the fight came on. It clearly showed the new ships in what was very certainly Jakes vids that the computer had shot. The Dragoon High Council said it wasn’t their ships, they were happy with the treaties, and it was most definitely not pirates, so everyone was waiting as argon intelligence called for all citizens and allies to be careful and report any sightings. Jake was happy to see them on this so quickly. It wouldn’t be any time at all before these new people were identified and he for one wanted to know.

The broadcast had barely ended when he got a call, and he opened the link to see Helena sitting there smiling.

“Helena,” Jake said smiling with a slight nod, and she started laughing.

“What I’m not a pretty lady today?” she asked laughing and Jake chuckled and said, “always’ she thanked him and said she had seen the reports, and he and his new “toy” had done an exceptional job. The carrier captain was more than impressed even though jakes shields were low when he arrived he had stayed and kept them busy until reinforcements arrived and helped finish the job.

“If I didn’t know you better, I’d think you had a little military training.” Helena said as Jake just smiled and said she knew better. Helena was pleased, he was becoming a more responsible member of the family and she was proud of him for it, having this new ship seemed very much to agree with him, but then she had seen things like this before in her career, just not so quickly.

“Well Argon Intelligence pays well for new info like this and you’re not an exception. I’ll transfer a nice pile of credits to your account or if there’s something else, just name it. Jake got a huge grin and knowing Jake Helena just sat waiting to hear it.

“I need a couple 1 gig shields,” Jake said.

“Even one will do, I’m using 125’s now but today told me that they’re not enough, and the local equipment docks don’t handle them, so if you have an extra…” he said laughing as Helena started laughing too.

“Oh, I think the argon military might have an extra one lying around. I’ll have to see, but meanwhile be very careful. These new ships are very powerful for their size and we haven’t seen anything bigger thank the Maker, so just be careful.” She said seriously and Jake nodded, saying he was going to just take a break right here for a little while and she got the message and nodded and the link went dead. “Beats hunting all over” Jake thought with a big grin and returned to his show.

An hour later Jake had a delivery and he was all smiles. 1- 1 gig shield was dropped off with the thanks of argon intelligence and he thanked them back for their support. Now he was going to be a lot more ready when the next time came, and he was sure enough that it was coming he started planning his next few days to maximize his chances at getting free missiles.

Chapter 12: Making new friends, the hard way

Jake had a good breakfast and decided that he was going hunting. Now he had more then 1.5 gigs in shields a few pirate ships weren’t going to be a big problem and he had a score to settle for the first trip coming to Alan’s station. Hr turned his ship, armed all his weapons, and flew calmly into Brenan’s triumph. It only took a second for this thing to get attention and Jake wasn’t helping, calling out to patrols that “he had returned” and they all laughed and jumped in. What these morons didn’t know until it was too late was he was a lot better armed this time and with 10x the shields. One patrol after another hit him with little pauses between until he finally got a call.

“Alright, that’s enough, what the bezany do you want from us anyways?” the station manager asked as the fighters withdrew.

“Just having some fun, aren’t your guys?” Jake asked as the captain looked a little upset.

“Fun is one thing, and we enjoy a good fight too, but this is NOT a good fight, so I ask again what the bezany do you want?” he demanded and Jake was really surprised, he was basically giving up.

“Free access to the system and gates for me and my friends,” Jake said finally. The captain had to think about it, but it beat loosing any more ships, and they both knew he’d be back.

“Granted, give me the list, and make it SHORT,” he demanded as Jake said smiling,

“Brenan vessels, Sherri Sillarn, and any mercenary ships, that’s all.” Jake said smiling, and the captain wasn’t too happy but he agreed. Jake gathered up all his free missiles, his LAST free missiles and went to the north gate and entered. He stopped just beside the mercenary station and called across. The commander opened the link and Jake identified himself.

“Oh, don’t worry, I know who you are.” He said smiling and Jake smiled back saying there was a new deal, the pirate sector was now friendly and they didn’t need to worry about their ships being attacked there anymore.

“Well thank you for that, we heard from the gate guards what happened, but we really didn’t have a problem there either, they have a strong sense of self-preservation, it seems.” He said as Jake and he both laughed. It was the thought that counted, Jake said and he turned and jumped away.

Jake was back in Akeelas Beacon and looking around in a minute. They had a Titan there now and it seemed very quiet, the ships captain called across and thanked him for checking on the sector after yesterday, and said he was now assigned there so Jake didn’t need to worry. Jake just smiled and nodded, he didn’t know if that meant thanks or get going, but he left anyways. It started being clear later that day he had made a small error. Almost every pirate ship he saw now was friendly. He had no idea that making friends with one station could change so much, and he was surprised. It had cut down quickly on his income and he wasn’t too happy with it but then he had helped others too and he felt good about it.

Jake started working his way back across Aladna Hill when a call came in.

“This is the mercenary sector calling Jake Brennan, can you hear us?” Jake slowed down and instantly answered.

“I’m here what can I do for you?” he asked, he was just there a while ago, he thought.

“We are under attack by unknown assailants and we need assistance, we may yet lose a station, can you assist us?” they asked as Jake called,

“Count on it,” and hit the jump button. He came through the north gate as the world looked like it was ending. The new ships were everywhere and they seemed to have a group guarding the north gate as he entered, but that didn’t last long. He moved slowly through the crowd and ships popped like crackers all around him. In a second there was a cheer as some called that Jake had arrived and everyone welcomed him to the party.

Jake had control of the north gate and called out it was clear and started moving towards what his radar said was a corvette class assaulting the first station, he was inside of 12 km so he left go a silkworm to get their attention and it definitely worked. The ship was hit amidships and literally slid sideways for a second, it turned and left the station until it had dealt with this new threat and Jake was quick to see this thing had a lot of firepower up front. He had scans running and vids and he opened up as it approached him. His shields were dropping but so were theirs and as the big beams they used stopped for a second to recharge he was finally in HEPT range and literally slid to a near stop right beside the smaller ship. It seemed to have just 1 turret, and Jake was all smiles, it was trying to turn to get the big guns back on him but they barely caught the tip of his tail, he was really close by now and 6 turrets with HEPT’s on them were just too much. The corvette exploded right beside him and the shockwave slid him just a bit, but the shields held.

“The corvette is out of it!” a call came across and everyone was yelling and applauding as Jake moved on to the next small group. The odds were getting better with at least a dozen top quality mercenary fighters working the sector and Jake flying through dropping the smaller and medium sized ships in a heartbeat. In a few more minute it was over and the cheer was deafening, as the sector commander called and thanked Jake for coming to help.

“I gave my word, and a Brennan’s word is good.” Jake said as a lot of people thanked him personally and he started gathering up a lot more of the new missiles he had found before. He had helped a few more friends and gotten a lot of new stuff to sell too, you just can’t get a much better day than that, he thought, as he waved at everyone and jumped back to Danna’s Chance.

Jake parked and called Helena and she answered very quickly, he thought.

“There was a big attack in the mercenary sector north of Brennans Triumph.” He said and she asked how he knew and he said he had friends there. She just smiled, it wasn’t a very big surprise, but he went on to say he now had scans and vids of a new model corvette class and a lot more of the new missiles if she wanted them. She was all ears and suggested he jump into Argon prime and sees her personally. He nodded and said to warn everyone what he was flying and she just laughed and said she almost forgot. He came through the east gate as a few freighters seemed to scatter like flies and he started to laugh to himself, this was almost funny, but with all these capitol ships around he was glad he had friends here for sure. He was told to pull up by the argon one and the Commander wanted to see him in her office. He nodded and gave the ship a quick scan and beamed right in, as Helena jumped and shook her fist at him.

“THAT was not a standard move here, you’re supposed to come on board, and someone would lead you up here.” She said a little startled to say the least, and Jake chuckled to her annoyance.

“Sorry Helena, first time you know,” he said as she got her composure back and asked him to sit.

“Why exactly were you in the mercenary sector, besides probably doing some drinking,” she asked smiling as Jake finally told her the story of him, his new ship, and his promise. She finally sat back in her chair and smiled; now she knew.

“Their friends of mine, and they asked for help so there I was, and I got more info for you and a gang of new enemy missiles on my ship, so of course I called you immediately.” Jake said as Helena nodded and thanked him, she said they had a few people looking over the design of the ones he had dropped off with the cruiser in Light of Heart and had a dozen more scientists who wanted to see one or two ands she was happy he had thought to save them as well as report.

“Family helps family,” Jake said as she smiled widely and he said he was sure she could beam the missiles over and he handed her the info chip he brought along. She was all smiles till she loaded it into the reader and saw the very close up of the corvette class and its destruction at close range.

“You take big chances Jake.” She said seriously.

“Not really, 6 turrets against 1 go figure,” he said and she chuckled he was right of course he had an enormous amount of firepower at closer ranges, but that vette had a lot up front ands she had some people who were very surely wanting to see this.

“Well I appear to owe you again,” Helena said finally with a big smile and Jake just nodded and said whatever she thought was right was ok with him. She stood and shook his hand and he beamed back over and she just laughed to herself, Brenans had from time to time been in all the wrong places for all the right reasons and it looked like it was Jakes turn. She beamed another 1 gig shield over to his ship ands he was away in a minute, probably going looking for more trouble, she thought, but then that was Jake.
