Book 2: A Family Affair....Part 1

Chapter 1: Graduation at Last

It has been 20 years since Julian and Ben had their conversation about the future of the galaxy, and it has been as peaceful as anyone could have hoped. Julian and Saya have had a good life so far with a great business or two and they are the envy of all of Argon. The socialite daughter of Elena Kho and the Heroic son of Kyle Brennan, the experimental pilot turned Argon Industrialist. They have lived the life of the wealthy and elite as much as anyone and their opinions have been sought by business and Political leaders alike. Julian, now owner of one of the biggest ship building companies in space and Saya, his loving wife and owner of several military supply stations, have kept Argon well maintained and strong for more than a decade.

As time traveled, things change, and some remain the same, Ban Danna, now a retired military hero has a business running an Argon military museum, the two major ships there, the Atlantis an old xenon war carrier, and the Terra, a renamed xenon war battleship actually belonging to Kyle Brennan. He happily watches over his charges and gives speeches about the need for a good military in hard times and the need for strong contacts with Argon business as a way of guaranteeing those strong ties. His replacement, Commander Harris, the former captain of the Argon 2, the first Earth type carrier to ever see Argon space, has the boring day to day duties of Bans former office. He heads Argon Intelligence and the military from the new Argon One, a new super carrier fashioned after the old Earth designs.

Life goes on and after a time trying Julian and Saya had 2 children, Julia, named after her father, and Kyle named after his grandfather. There was talk of naming the next child after Elena Kho, but that never happened, so they finally decided they had a perfect family as it was. Now with their 18th birthday coming up and graduation from the Argon Academies of their choice, they kids are ready for the one Argon celebration that all argon teens face. Their graduation, and starting out on their own, usually this signifies cutting your ties with Mom and dad and going into the world and into the profession of your choice, but for these two it means much more. Kyle the brilliant grandson of Elena Kho has modeled himself after his grandmother, a brilliant business person and head of Terracorp, the largest Argon business in existence. His sister, Julia, has a severe problem. As her father’s daughter, she needs, nay demands excitement and freedom that her father has seen she gets in minute amounts. She is his baby, and with all the authority he can muster, or Saya allows, he has watched her blossom into the spitting image of her mother at her age. While it gives him great pride, it gives him great worry. He is one of those fathers who said from the beginning he would always be there for his family and he has, wither they needed him or not, and sometimes to their embarrassment, but he was always there. He saw it as being the perfect father, while Saya saw it as being a doting parent; the discussion of what the children could and could not do was forever being heard. Julian has been there for them so much he has forced himself too close, and with Argon Graduation just days away, he is frantic to decide the one thing all Argon Fathers do automatically, buy the ship, and set them free. Even now three days before graduation it has not been done and time is running out.

Julian sits at his desk looking over his shipyard reports as Saya comes walking in. He looks up and smiles as she comes around and gives him a kiss. She does this a lot these days and it never fails to get a smile.

“Have you made a decision yet?” she asks, with a big warm smile.

Julian looks quickly down at his reports.

“Julian, its only three days, come on, you have to decide, at least talk to them and see what their hoping for, I know Kyle has been right up to the office door three times today and has stopped and turned away each time, and Julia has been listening to her friends telling her about the new ships they have coming. I think she’s getting depressed you don’t trust her.” Saya said trying not to chuckle at Julian’s discomfort.

“I trust both of them just fine; it’s all those… others out there I’m worried about.” Julian said in disgust.

“Kyle can take care of himself, and when it comes to business he’s got it all covered. You know he’s number one at the academy, and so is Julia.” She added quickly.

“Argon Business Academy is great, and I know he’ll do ok, but Saya…” He started again, she thought.

“If she was your son with the top grades in his class at the Argon Flight Institute you’d buy him a Nova and stand around patting him on the back, like father like son, but she’s a girl and she’s your daughter, no doubt about it, so why can’t you treat her the same way?” she asks, massaging Julian’s tight neck muscles, he drops his head and groans.

“But she’s NOT a boy, my daughter or not, she’s just not the same as a boy and I’ve been to all those stations and heard those jokes, and she’s just not ready for that,” he whined, at this Saya bursts out laughing to Julian’s immediate disgust.

“What’s so funny, she’s your daughter too.” He said.

“And I’ve been to those stations since I was 15 and yes, they come up and tell you those jokes to see what you’ll say, but I dare say a few will regret that with our daughter, she’s not a dainty little flower, you, yourself enrolled her in to Argon Academy at 10 and she’s been a Black belt for 2 years. “ She said laughing all the more. Julian sits back to consider, it was one of his best ideas, he thought smiling. Saya leans over and kisses his forehead softly whispering,

“ Make the call today, time is running out, you can pay the fines for her kicking some poor boys arse later.” She smiles and walks out of the room. Julian smiles and sits back for a moment; he hears a small noise and chuckles.

“Kyle is that you?” he asks as his son walks in slowly. He looks a lot like his father, but slightly taller and with a definite flair for style. He’s always dressed the best and smiles even if he’s angry, the business world better watch out. Julian thinks to himself.

“Ahem, hi dad, I didn’t want to bother you, I know how much time it takes to run a business properly.” He says smiling, Julian points to a chair and Kyle sits down.

“So, three more days’ heh all packed and ready to hit the road?” Julian smiles, he doesn’t think for a minute he’s thinking of moving out so quickly, free rent, you know.

“Well, not packing exactly, but I’ve been talking to a few classmates about a business deal , just something to get a start, but I’m not sure what to tell anyone, I mean, graduation is coming and we both know I don’t want a ship like a lot of OTHERS.” He says loudly, and Julian knows his lovely daughter is waiting her turn.

“So what do you want then?” Julian asked straight out,

“Credits actually, nothing more than anyone else, of course, just whatever the cash equivalent of that first ship comes to.” He says, with a quick look to see if it’s being considered.

“What kind of investment?” Julian asks.

“Three of us are thinking of going in and buying our first station, maybe a missile fab, but we have to total up and see what we can afford, with ships and our first supplies…” Julian knows he can go on about this but he cuts him off.

“I have the idea, ok, let me think a little more and we can talk after graduation, I think someone else is waiting, so…” he says as Kyle rolls his eyes and walks away, no decision again, this is pathetic, he thinks.

Julia is patiently waiting in the outer hall; she flies in as Kyle walks past and gives her dad a big hug.

“Hi daddy, I got some great news today, the insurance company says I can get full coverage on whatever I get and they’ll even hold the first payment ‘til I get a few jobs to pay it, isn’t that great?” she rambles as her father sits smiling to himself. She always has such a huge amount of energy and just seems to dance around, he can’t figure out where she gets it from, certainly not me, he thinks.

“Yes, great, but aren’t you forgetting something, I didn’t say you were getting a ship for graduation maybe a nice cruise to Earth and back.” He says as she stops dead and turns with a very dirty look.

“You don’t want me to be an outcast forever do you?” she asks, and Julian starts to laugh, they have had this talk before.

“Don’t laugh at me, I spent 18 years here being the pretty little daughter you could show off, now please just let me be common Argon for a little while. There’s so much I can learn and see out there, “she says, pleading. Julian knows it’s true, but he has been the perfect father for too long, he just can’t let go.

“We’ll see, now if you don’t mind, I have work.” Julian says, waving to his desk. Julia grabs the nearest pile of papers and flings them in the air and spends no time stomping them into the rug before leaving. Julian shakes his head and gets up and starts picking up the orders and receipts as Saya walks in again.

“Having a little trouble here?” she asks a little more serious this time.

“I deserved it, we were having a good talk, and I just cut her off and waved to the door. She’s not used to being treated this way.” Julian apologizes for his daughters’ performance.

“Arggg, I can’t believe you, you were the all Argon war hero, and the man who faced xenon patrols for fun for years and you can’t face your own daughter when she’s clearly acting spoiled. I swear every time she sat on your lap and gave you a hug from the time she was 6 ‘til now, she drained more and more of your spirit away.” She says seriously and walks quickly away. Julian didn’t take this too well, after all he was the man of the house and he deserved a little respect here, as soon as he picks up after…he stops to think and drops his head, she’s right of course, he thinks. He walks to his desk and drops the papers there, he opens a comm’s link, and waits, the shipyards comes on the line.

“Mr. Brennan good to see you, sir, what can I do for you?” the foreman asks smiling.

“I have two rush orders,” Julian says quietly.

“For graduation, I guess ok, sir it’s your yard, what do you want us to do?” he asks.

“I want one wasp missile factory set up in Herons Nebula and bring me the codes, and make up…” He swallows hard and takes a deep breath,

One Buster Hauler, deluxe, with all the specials, and bring me the codes for it too.” He says finally.

“Any name on the ship, sir?” the foreman asks.

“Julia, that’s all,” Julian says and closes the link, well he did it, now if he had the nerve to give it away, but then she’d probably hot wire it and steal it, he thought laughing to himself.

Chapter 2: The Day Arrives

Graduation day was on them in a flash and Julian and Saya went to see and hear the ceremonies. Saya was finally proud of him, she had seen the ship being carefully hidden away in one of the old freight docks, but she would be more than surprised if it hadn’t been seen. It was very nice and even though Julia had asked to be common Argon for a while this ship was anything but common. She smiled as Julia’s name was called and she went forward for her diploma, it was an age-old ceremony, from the days of the first schools on Argon, but they kept it as a way of showing the students they were appreciated.

The second ceremony was a little more sculpted, Argon businessmen from all over were there, either to see their sons and daughters graduate or see the future competition, and many were here just for that. This was the dominant business school on Argon Prime and not everyone who asked were even accepted, it was an honor to have this diploma on your wall, and some considered it an honor to deal with those who did.

By now, Julian thought, his two kids were sure they were being forgotten, and some of their friends would be starting to ask silly questions about their real heritage, but he was sure in a few minutes things would change around. They flew straight home and he called the whole family into his office, they were all there with smiles and Saya was hoping he wouldn’t back out at the last second. Julian opened his drawer and pulled out two small envelopes. He walked over and handed one to his son with a huge grin and said,

“It’s in Herons Nebula, now get out,” Not at all forcefully and gave him a last hug. He grabbed his things laughing and singing and made a dash for the docks, he was finally an argon businessman and he had a lot to prove.

Julian turned to his daughter and gripped the envelope even tighter, but he knew it was ok, he had personally seen to it she was as ready as anyone could be, he sniffed loudly and handed it to her, who immediately gave him a huge hug and ran downstairs yelling,

“Wait Kyle, I’ll fly you over, you don’t need a taxi today.” She said loudly waving her codes and credit chip. It was all over in a matter of minutes and he had made his children very happy, now he had to learn to adjust himself. Saya walked over with tears in her eyes and gave him a huge hug and kiss.

“I was so proud of you, and Kyle’s eyes almost fell out when you told him to get out, of course he doesn’t believe it a bit.” She said and they stood there and held each other. They had been a foursome for 18 years, and now they were alone in their home again. At least for a while, they thought and they both chuckled and said they might actually have a little privacy now.

In the dock Julia and Kyle stopped for a minute to look at the new ship, it was beautiful. It had what once was called the pirate colors, now being called the deluxe Buster, she opened the hatch and they both walked in, Julia entered her new codes and the new ship hummed warmly. She wiped a tear for a second as Kyle sat in the co pilots’ seat.

“Well, what did you get,” she asked chuckling. He opened the envelope and his eyes popped,

“By the Maker, my own wasp missile factory, ok, sis, let’s get this crate rolling, there’s credits to be made and Teladi to skin.” He said laughing and they backed out of the old freight bay and in a second they were gone. The new ship flew even better than Julia had hoped; she had asked to be common argon after all the years of being someone special at home. Now she would have to prove she could do it. As usual the envelopes contained the codes for Kyle’s business and for Julia’s ship and the “first paycheck” that the parents give out with it. In reality it was supposed to be a payment for their first place, usually a small apartment on a trading station somewhere, but they knew they were always going to be welcome at home. It was more of personal pride to see how long you could do it alone, before having to return for help. Some never did return and some were there all too soon, Julia decided she wanted to really prove something to her dad, and she wouldn’t go back without a good reason.

They flew through Argon Prime as a few friends called and said how great the new ship looked; of course they were out tooling around in their new Discoverers or Busters too. It was one of those days that a local police officer just stays at home. It was graduation day and they had all done the same thing. They ran quickly into Herons Nebula and Kyle called out the co ordinates of the station, his dad was careful, he thought,, it was right beside an ore mine, and getting materials would be a breeze. Kyle invited her for the official opening of the station and Kyle turned on the machines and ordered his first load of ore from the station next door. It was a dream come true, but now Julia waved good bye and started towards the trading station. Her new Buster Hauler wasn’t made for hauling ore, but it could do a great job on hauling other stuff and she could double this credit check before her first night alone, she thought.

Julia got a small apartment in the station, barely big enough to sleep and dress in. She switched from her better clothes to what she considered her “work” clothes. She had seen a vid of some long ago war uniform and she fell in love with it, she decided to make it her pilots dress, and it wasn’t anything like the one her mother had worn to “snag” her dad. This outfit was made up of very tough looking materials. A pair of heavy looking tan jeans and tall heavy boots, then a short sleeved shirt with a short jacket over it. She looked like she was ready for battle at any moment, and it pleased her to think some scum would leave her alone on looks alone. She locked her new door and went looking for work.
She stopped by an asteroid and pulled up the trading system extension her dad was sure to add, bless him, she thought. In the sector were many stations including the new one her brother was probably dancing around naked in at the moment? Of course, she snickered, he was too straight and stuffy for that, but he would be over there counting the money he hadn’t made yet. She scanned the sector and saw an E cell factory fully loaded, and she pulled in and loaded up. The dock manager was quick to smile and recognize a new graduate when he saw one and gave her an exceptional deal. Her new ship was loaded and she smiled a huge smile as she pulled up to Kyle’s station and opened comm’s.

“E cell delivery, 16 credits each, take it or leave it.” She said and Kyle laughed out loud.

“Sold,” Kyle said and she docked and the little ship was unloaded. It was all Kyle was waiting on, he started the new factory and in a few minutes the first wasp missiles were coming off the line, by then the shipment he ordered came in too and he was sure he was set up for his first delivery.

“Ok, sis, If you want load up these missiles and take them to the equipment dock in Argon Prime, do the delivery and for your troubles, keep 6 missiles for your own defense, don’t ever say I never gave you anything.” He said laughing, and she was quick to point out it was his first profitable load, and he just nodded and smiled. She agreed and in a few Kyle was paid and the equipment docks had a new load of Wasp Missiles from the newest factory in town.

Julia made two more runs that day and finally decided that she had done pretty well, she went back to her little apartment and grabbed some sleep, and she really had doubled her credit check the first day, if she did that every day she’d be all set.

Julian was at his desk the next day when a call came in; he grabbed it like a madman and just smiled when his old friend Ben was on the line.

“Day after graduation, heh, their good kids, and I strongly doubt you’ll see them coming running back for more money for a while, well, maybe Kyle.” He said smiling. Julian chuckled and asked how he was doing, things had been very quiet, and Julian for one, had gotten very used to it.

“There’s an… adjustment, that needs to be made, so I thought I’d call and warn you ahead of time.” He said, looking squarely into the screen. Julian’s face dropped for a second, he and Ben talked often mostly when Ben wanted to brag or was just getting lonely. He lived his life for his work and Julian knew he didn’t trust anyone to be there with him, a solitary life for sure.

“Now that we’re well along the matrix tells me that we overlooked a small possibility. We made things almost too quiet and even law enforcement is cut back to minimum levels everywhere. There is a lot of pressure to disband militaries and it’s not good. There is always a chance we could find or be visited by a new race, like the Kha’ak years ago, and frankly, we’re not ready.” He said in summation.

“So, are we going to be visited by one? Is that what you’re telling me?” Julian asked looking up to see if Saya was coming in, nope, good.

“We are being studied by a few at this moment, but then they have been around a long time, the Shevans are still here in small numbers, I did research on them and their actually xenophobes, they like being left alone, and they don’t bother anyone unless you approach them, then I think their ships have autodefence. Then there are the Dragoons, they have just started sneaking around the southern sectors, along the frontier, so it’s important we act to help restore a little more balance to the system, so I think a small pirate community going off on their own from the Legion should help to keep law enforcement and the militaries all looking needed. Nothing big you understand, no new Pirate Wars, just small little patrol things, kind of like the old days.” He explains. Julian drops his head, just in time for his kids to be on their own, pirates are coming back, terrific.

“Thanks for the call, Ben I appreciate it, and hey, who are these Dragoons you mentioned, and are they friendly?” Julian suddenly asked.

“No clue, we’ll be in touch.” Ben said and shut down comm’s. Julian wasn’t too happy about this, his hand hovered over the comm’s station for a second, and then he pulled it back. He couldn’t let too many people know he had foreknowledge of things; he’d wait and see what happened first.

A Family Affair Part2

Chapter 3: Making It Alone

It had been a week since graduation and Julia and Kyle were doing their level best. She did, shamelessly, haul E cells for her brother when she saw he was the least bit low, and he started paying her for deliveries. They both were doing ok, and it looked like things were going to be good for a while. As Julia sat at a counter eating her lunch a voice from the next seat over made her jump.

“That’s a tough looking outfit for such a little girl.” He said. She slowly lowered her sandwich and turned to face him. He was a very attractive young man, dressed in the flamboyant nature of the pirates, with lose fitting shirts and bright colors, she gave him a serious look for a second and his wide smile dropped slightly.

“It’s my work clothes and I’m NOT a little girl.” She said very forcefully, as he started smiling again.

“No harm intended, I just saw you around here for a week or two and thought you might be looking to make some money.” He said, she gave him a very tough look for a second and he quickly countered,

“No, nothing like that, I mean, you have a good ship and we always need more cargo carriers.” He stumbled.

“Hauling what,” she finally asked, turning back to her lunch.

“Whatever you want we have loads going to Teladi space for spaceweed, completely legal, and there’s a lot of loads of Argons finest whisky needed just about everywhere.” He said, quietly.

“And pirates are recruiting in café’s now?” she asked as the person behind the counter walked over with a stern look. Julia just nodded and waved him away as he gave this pirate person a good hard stare before leaving.

“We recruit everywhere, on the street, in restaurants, wherever we can find good quality people, and I have a good feeling about you, you could do well with us.” He said in closing.

“I’ll think about it, but I’m not interested right now.” Julia said as he just sat staring at her with this big grin. Finally she slammed her sandwich down and whipped around to face him.

“Ok, WHAT is it, you’re staring a hole through me, and I DON’T like it.” She said as the whole place stopped to look.

“Sorry, it’s never failed me before, “He said with a big grin as he was escorted from the business. The owner apologized for the trouble and Julian just said she was in no danger, he nodded, and her lunch was free. She sat finishing her coffee thinking, it was another opportunity to work, but no matter how many years they had been friendly, a pirate was still a pirate, and they were very seldom reliable. She dropped a tip on the counter and went back to her ship and out to work. He was kind of cute though, she thought with a small smile.

Julia was on the way into Elena’s Fortune to drop off a load of crystals for a power plant when something caught her eye; there were three fighters, all Harriers flying up the trade lanes north. It looked like a patrol, but the pirates hadn’t been flying patrols in these sectors for over 5 years. She slowed down and left them go past and they moved up and through the north gate. She made her delivery and sat thinking about it, the pirates were recruiting and now flying patrols again, it didn’t seem like a good idea so she decided to ask someone who would know. She opened the comm’s and Commander Harris was there looking very happy with a big grin.

“My word, is that you Julia? What in the Makers name are you wearing?” he asked laughing.

“Hello, commander, sorry to bother you but I have a question, if you don’t mind.” She said being polite.
“Of course, any time an argon needs help we are here, ask away.” He said waiting.

“Are the pirates starting up again, I mean they always were around, but I was ask to join today at a restaurant and I swear I just saw a three ship pirate patrol in Elena’s Fortune.” She said seriously.

“This pirate who ask you to join wasn’t a young man by any chance was it?” he asked and she said yes it was and said where.

The commander just smiled a big smile like it was so obvious, and he spoke once more.

“I don’t think there’s a big chance of the pirates breaking the agreements here, after all they have proved they can be trustworthy for many years, as far as a young pirate wanting to get you to join, well, you’re a very pretty girl, and I’m sure he noticed.” Commander Harris said smiling, and the link went blank.

“That’s not what I meant.” Julia thought shaking her head, maybe it was all in her head, and she loaded up with E cells and made another delivery. She hadn’t been in Herons Nebula all day and it was getting towards evening, so she ran over and checked with Kyle about doing a delivery for him. He smiled and said not right now and she stopped to do a scan of the local businesses. She grabbed a load of E cells and dropped them off at a mine just as they ran out and they were very pleased. It made her feel good she had helped and the worries of pirates and trouble were quickly forgotten.

Julia went back to her place and got a shower and sat for the evening having a meal and watching the news on the public screen in the café’ she was very surprised to hear a Teladi freighter captain was being investigated for smuggling spaceweed into argon space. Well maybe surprised wasn’t the right word, she thought chuckling to herself. Then there was an ad for a new ship it was a freighter class, but was very fast and even well armed, as it said, for those few who needed it safe. She wondered what it cost but decided that she couldn’t afford it just yet anyways. The last article caught everyone at the restaurant by surprise, it showed three pirate ships attacking a freighter and destroying it, then stealing the cargo. It said the spokesman for the Legion said these were renegades and not a part of the official pirate community and he welcomed all races in his attempt to stop them from disrupting the peace. Julia swallowed hard, they really were coming back, she was gladder than ever for her good ship and the guns on it, and maybe she should invest in that last shield too.

The next day she was out and doing her usual routine. She knew now that some stations had almost no ships of their own and they welcomed anyone making runs for them .It had become a way of life in argon space with the yearly graduation there were literally thousands of young people out there looking for work and they didn’t need the extra expense of keeping up a fleet so it saved them a lot. She docked at one station with a load of cells and the dock manager walked out and shook her hand, she had been here several times before and they were starting to know her better.

“We have a new rush order but we aren’t going to make it at this rate, can we hire you to haul E cells for us today? We will pay top dollar and you can get them for the best price anywhere you want, but we need at least 2500 as soon as possible, we are holding back full production ‘til we are sure we will have cells to do it, interested?” he asked seriously. Julia just smiled and said she would be glad to help and the contract was made, it would be a long day, but her Hauler was made for it and at 250 cells a trip she had some serious work to do. She took off and made the first few trips from local stations and then dropped down to The Wall and started hauling from there. It was a long day, but she finished her first real contract and the owners gave her a 2k bonus for being there when they needed her. That new ship was looking closer and closer, she thought smiling as she went home.

Chapter 4: Things Get Tense

Julia had a pattern set up by now. There were several power stations in The Wall she bought from and they used crystals at a high rate. She watched for the best deals and grabbed crystals cheap and rushed them out there when she could. It had worked several times and she had done well. She got a call as she was scanning businesses one day from one of the mines in Elena’s Fortune. They needed E cells bad and they were looking for a full time hauler, they needed far more than she could haul in a day so they made her a sweet deal ‘til the job was done. She agreed, and it looked like her shipping career was taking off, she was getting a good reputation and had been reliable so far. She started the contract and hauled successfully all the first day and into the next when something odd happened. She was just leaving the mine when she was commed again, this time it was the young man whom she met in the café’ a few days before.

“Well, look who’s here; I knew we’d meet again.” He said as she looked around. There were three Harriers sitting not too far away and he was calling her from one. She wasn’t too happy about it and kept going towards the gate.

“I don’t think we have anything to talk about, so if you’ll excuse me, I have a contract to fill.” She said very seriously, but the fighters started moving towards her and he called again.

“I want you to come with us, we have needs of someone with your good looks and skill, I’m sure.” He said and a disrupter missile was sent towards her. She heard the alarm and did what she had been taught, she threw the throttle forward and made a tight turn just next to a big asteroid, but the missile missed the roid and made another pass. She saw her chance and rushed the rock at top speed and as it looked like she was going to “Kiss” the rock, she pulled up hard. She wasn’t sure she would make it, but she wasn’t going with them no matter what. The Buster groaned and shook, but it made the turn with feet to spare, but the missile didn’t and as the explosion ripped around her, she started back towards the pirates. Even before she got there, there was a high – speed ship and two of his friends there already, she slowed down as first one then another pirate ship was destroyed, the last made a run for the gate but one of her Wasp missiles stopped it short. Her comm’s came on again, and this time it was a very different young man on the line.

“Now THAT was some great flying, I couldn’t have done it better myself.” He said as Julia looked at the comm’s screen, it said, “Lt. Craig Gardna, Argon Security Force.” She let out a big sigh and he asked if she was alright. She said yes and he wanted to know why they had fired on her, for the report of course. She told him what they said and then they fired the disrupter after her and he said she was very lucky, disrupters seldom miss at close range, but he was a witness to the incident so she wasn’t going to have to worry about the dead pirate. It looked like there were going to be a lot of those soon enough, and he smiled a big sweet smile and said he would see her around, she was in his patrol zone, and Julia couldn’t think of anything better at the moment.

Julia went home and had a sit down for a while. She was trained to get out of these situations, and she had done it, but up ‘til now it was all on a screen or in practice drills but this was real and she might have been on her way to a slave camp, or worse right now if she hadn’t gone to the best school available. Every trainer was an ex fighter pilot and she was happy to learn from the best, and today she made the final grade, A+. She was scared to death and excited as hell, all at the same time, and all she could think of was, “I could have taken them, I’m sure of it.” She couldn’t believe it had happened and she was sure it might happen again. She knew now to be ready, and watch herself more closely. The next time she’d be ready and the security team wouldn’t be needed, she thought.

After a minute or ten to compose herself she went back to work. Close call or no, she had a job and a nice bonus at the end if she made it, she thought. She dropped off her last load of the day a while later and the station owner asked if it was her the pirates fired on and she said yes, He was severely upset and said he was going to make a big stink about lax security in his sector, but Julia told him she was ok, and the security team did show up in time to get the pirates, She purposely left out the part where she splattered one with a Wasp missile. He nodded and shook her hand saying he used to have a security team there but after a long time he decided he didn’t need it, maybe he was wrong, he’d have to think about it. He then said if she was still willing he’d double the bonus for her being such a brave woman and returning to finish the contract. She accepted, and
went home for the night. After showering and changing clothes she went for dinner and watched the news again, an evening ritual among many apartment residents there. She was eating a fine bowl of argon stew when the news broadcast reported the fight between three pirate ships and three argon security ships in Elena’s Fortune, it mentioned that they had come to the aid of a young woman being abducted at gun point, and the security team was praised for saving her. Thank the Maker, Julia thought, that they didn’t mention her name, her dad would be looking for her in a second, and it was alright, he didn’t need to worry.

She wanted to tell someone, but who she could talk to about it without them running to her parents was the thing. They were well known and they had people just watching for the kids to have a problem she was sure. Maybe a little quiet and some privacy was what were really needed, so she decided against it.
The next day she finally finished the contract and the station owner thanked her over and over for being there even after what happened. He said she got high marks for her hard work and bravery, and anyone who asked she was getting a good report from him. The bonus he offered her looked very nice and she couldn’t help but notice as she got more experience that the pay and bonuses got bigger, she hoped it was a trend that continued, but now she needed another deal and went into argon space a little deeper this time. She found a new contract in The Wall and she was happy to get out of Elena’s Fortune for a while, it gave her the creeps and she needed to just get away from it.

She was hauling meatsteak cahoonas from the factory to all the stations in the area. The owner had a ship break down on him and he had contracts too, so he hired her to help him out in this tough spot. He said he had checked and heard good things about her, and he was glad she took the job. She managed to get all the trips in one day and she made some good money doing it. If things kept going like this she just might be able to get a bigger ship in the future, but it was still a ways off, even though she took some time every few days to look at ads and dream a little.

By now, Julian and Saya were getting used to having the place to themselves again, as he noticed one day while he was working she came in and sat on his lap and kissed him. They used to do things like that a lot, but kids change things, it was just nice to see she still thought like that, he decided. The kids were mentioned almost every night at dinner, they had expected to see or hear from at least one of them by now, but no luck. Julian felt bad, saying maybe Kyle thought he really meant for him to “get out” but Saya just laughed and said they had given him his own station, it wouldn’t surprise her if he invited them out to HIS place sometime soon to show them how he was doing. Julian smiled and said it would be nice to talk to them once in a while, and Saya gave him a big hug and said they’d be back, when they thought they had stayed away enough. They were watching the news that night when the report came over about the security team stopping an abduction in Elena’s Fortune, and Saya thought Julian would pass out. It was just the kind of thing that he was worried about, but it had worked out ok for whoever it was, and the security team got a big pat on the back for it. She was just happy to see the pirates got what they deserved for that, kidnapping was a capital offense and they would have been caught sooner or later, just this time some poor girl didn’t need rescued from some porn house. They decided to wait another week and see if they heard from them; if not maybe it wasn’t so bad to be the first to say hi.

Chapter 5: Patience Rewarded

Kyle was sure things couldn’t get any better; he had several people buying his missiles right from the factory, so delivery wasn’t much of a problem. Even when they started piling up Julia would stop in and it worked out pretty well. He was very happy and ordered his first freighter of his own, for the resources run. He could pick up ores and E cells in bulk better and it would save him being at the mercy of everyone else’s schedule. He knew things were going to get even better and he wanted to show his dad how well he had it. It had been a while since they talked, and Kyle was starting to miss his parents, he didn’t want to move back in, but the station got pretty big and empty sometimes, so maybe a call once in a while wasn’t a bad thing. He sat smiling behind his desk and made the call, it buzzed a few times before anyone got it, and Saya was there to say hi.

“Kyle, how are you, is everything ok?” she asked trying hard not to sound too worried.

“Things are going fantastic, how’s dad doing?” he asked with his patented smile.

“He’s doing well, we almost don’t know what to do with all this privacy we have now.” She said, laughing, he was very sure they knew exactly what to do with it, but these were his parents so he didn’t want to think about it.

“And how is your sister, do the two of you see each other often?” Saya asked as Kyle smiled even wider.

“She’s doing ok, she hauls some E cells for me, and well she did before I got my own freighter.” He said with his nose a little higher.

“And she stops in for a visit once and a while and does some deliveries for me. I here she’s getting a good reputation as a hauler, and she even said she’s watching ads so maybe thinking of a bigger ship someday, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be a while yet.” He said laughing, as his mother just smiled. It sounded like their kids were doing well; they may have worried for nothing.

“Well, in another week there’s an argon holiday coming up, so tell your sister we’d like the two of you to come home for a nice dinner and we can all hear everything that’s been going on, your fathers been wondering about the two of you, and he’ll be happy to see you again after this time.” She said and Kyle smiled and nodded.

“ok, Mom, it’s been great to see you, tell dad you guys can stop in sometime, just give me a little notice first, just in case.” He winked and the line went dead. Saya smiled widely, she doubted he had a girlfriend yet, he was too busy starting his business, but you never know, besides it’ll only be a matter of time, she thought and went to tell Julian what she had heard.

“Why didn’t you tell me Kyle was on the line, I’d like to have said hi at least?” Julian said with a wounded smile. Saya gave him a hug and said she set it up for them to come home for the holiday, and they could have a nice dinner together. She quickly mentioned that Julia was getting a good reputation and she was eyeing up new bigger ships already.

“Really doing that well, Hmm, which ships did he say she was looking at?” he asked quickly.
“He didn’t say.” Saya said laughing and walked away. Julian sat back and smiled they were doing it; they were making it on their own and actually doing better all along. He remembered doing those contracts from time to time between fighting and capturing ships, it helped pay for a lot of good meals, he thought with a smile. He’d have to leave a message at the shipyard for the foreman, if either of his children asked about ships, they were to get whatever they wanted at cost, he thought and peeked around his desk to see that Saya wasn’t watching him make the call.

The week past and Julian and Saya were on pins and needles to see their kids return. A call came in and there was Julia with a huge smile asking permission to dock, like she would ever have to ask, Julian thought with a chuckle, in a minute her and her brother walked in to smiles and hugs and handshakes. They had left with less than their normal monthly allowance and returned at least semi successful. They had asked no help and got none, and they were full of stories about their travels. Julian sat back with a huge grin and listened intently, he knew he had worried for nothing, right up ‘til Julia told them about the pirates and the security team she swore she wasn’t going to, but it was the most exciting thing that had happened to her and it just tumbled out. Her mother looked shocked and her dad wasn’t smiling much at the moment, but she was quick to say she got one herself with one of Kyle’s new missiles and the security team was watching the sector closely now. It took a few minutes for the mood to return it had been a shock and they remembered the news broadcast, even Kyle was in shock, up ‘til now she hadn’t even told him. She started this gloom so she felt it was her job to finish it, she smiled wide and asked,

“When’s dinner, I’m starving.” With a chuckle, and Saya said it was just about ready and her and her daughter walked into the kitchen to see. Saya immediately turned to her as they were out of sight of the men and hugged her.

“Mom it’s ok, I’m fine, it’s just I had to tell someone, it was just working on my mind since then, and all those lessons really helped, they never laid a gun on me.” She said as they both stood holding each other with a few tears showing.

“I knew you’d be ok, but for god’s sake let’s not say anything else to your father, he’s been in frenzy since all these attacks started.” Saya said, wiping her tears and checking dinner, in a minute they started talking again and Julia said dinner sure smelled good. Saya asked her what she had been eating and she said mostly argnu burgers and stew. Saya laughed and said she would eat well tonight then, and they both chuckled as they started to set the table. The rest of the evening went very well, Julian purposely didn’t ask anything else about the “incident”, and he decided to put in a good word for the security team anyways. Kyle and Julia were happy to be back for the night and everyone had a good time. It was soon over and Kyle stood hugging his Mom and shook his dads hand as he started to go. Julia got a big hug from each and Julian mentioned in her ear not to buy ships from anyone but him, she knew that already, but Mr. Business over there paid full price for his new freighter.

“What new ship were you looking at?” Julian asked quickly as they left.

Julia stopped for a second and smiled,

“The ad said it was a new Split light freighter, just got a model number, XD-40... But it didn’t look like any freighter I ever saw, so it was nice. Maybe later I’ll see.” She said and waved as they went down to the docks and left the station again. Saya and Julian watched them go and then turned and held each other, Julian was sure it was her on the news but they didn’t say, now he knew for sure, and he was so relieved she had made it ok. He just might have to post a note on their ad site saying the excellence of the training school she had attended. But then she had done very well on her own and even a few pirates couldn’t stop her. He was very, very proud.

Chapter 6: License to Modify

The next day Julian was at his desk and was watching closely to see where Saya was at the moment. He opened the comm’s to the shipyard and got the chief engineer on the link.

“Hello, sir, what can I help you with?” he asked, it was a rare thing to talk to the owner in person.

“What do we know about the new Split XD-40?” he asked seriously. The engineer pulled up some figures and seemed moderately impressed.

“It’s a small ship for a freighter, it looks more like someone started making a corvette class and then degraded it. It’s very good looking.” He said and in a second the picture came up on the screen. It certainly didn’t look like any freighter, but it was made for 1250 cargos, so it was an in between size, smaller than a full freighter and bigger than any fighter could carry, it was actually a good idea.

“Can we get one to see, I’d like to see what we can do with the design.” Julian said and the engineer said it hadn’t made into full production yet, so there was a few technicalities about the design rights, but Julian said he was more interested in modifying the interior than the design, he was willing to accept that Split made the body. The engineer said it was fine then they as a shipyard, had the right to modify any ship to their needs, but he would have to get one in to see what could be done. Julian said to do it and let him know when it came in. He closed the link just as a voice was heard.

“You old faker, can’t you just let her get her own ship without interfering?” Saya said with a big grin. Julian dropped his head and smiled,

“Nice ship 1250 cargos instead of the 250 she has now, and its brand new, not even in production yet, but 1- 25 meg shield?” he asked shaking his head and smiling.

“Well, ok, better shields then.” Saya said giving him a big hug and a kiss, and saying thank you before she left. Julian watched as she walked away, he never stopped loving that woman, he was a fool for a few years there, but they were definitely the happiest couple in Argon, now if he could just get this new ship design figured the way he wanted it without more hassle, he thought laughing, and started checking the new ships stats.

The new ship was in a week later and Julian went down to see it personally. He had come to the conclusion he could make something really great here, with a little work. The pirate raids were slowly getting worse and many people were calling for ships closer to what their parents had, with defense turrets and good shields, well here he was and he pulled together his best engineering crew for a meeting. They had been all over the ship and he was here to see what could be done with it, the meeting came to order and Julian started.

“Is it my imagination, or is this new design a copy of an older corvette design from a few years ago?” he asked and One engineer said that the basic size and shape might well be but they stripped it out and added a good bit more freight capacity, then reworked it into a freighter for long haulers so that the new pirate threat wouldn’t seem so bad. Julian nodded as he continued. It had a twin turret on the back, the first one anyone had seen in a few years, it was only made for IRE’s but was used with top of the line software for missile defense mostly to counter the use of disrupter missiles. Julian nodded and they went on. The engines were actually bigger than it needed, but it gave it the possibility, at least of being as quick and maneuverable as many present corvette types. The shields were not up to argon standards, but they had lots of room to modify. Julian had heard enough, he decided that the new design would be their newest ship class, the Fast Freighter, designed for top speed and maneuverability and good cargo capacity, it would serve to help people make a good living while being safe from attack from groups of small fighters. He ordered a few changes like a single 125 Meg shield and turrets for APAC’s instead of IRE’s and everyone shook their heads they could do it. He asked for all the best software for missile defense and the top speed it was capable of and they said they’d get right on it. He closed the meeting and went home, this might turn out to be a money making thing, after that first ship was tested, and he decided to see about a deal with the Split for the bodies, this was going to work out, he thought smiling.

He walked in as Saya was getting a cup of coffee. She turned and asked where he had been. He said he had a meeting at the shipyard and that they might be making a new line of fast ships for freighter captains so the pirates got less a chance at them. She chuckled to herself. She was sure she had seen this new ship already, but Julian was serious, the more he worked on it the better he liked it, and he was going to call a friend at the Split shipyard about buying the bodies off of him. Saya was impressed; he really was doing a business thing here, not just trying to get his daughter a new ship. They both laughed and he gave her a big hug, and she didn’t let go. This was a little unexpected, but certainly not unwanted.

“We’re going to miss calls over this.” Julian said softly in her ear.

“So what,” she said and gave him a long serious kiss. The day was shot after that and Julian and Saya were just lying around and talking the biggest part of the afternoon. They hadn’t done this in a long time, but with kids at home, enough said. They made it back to the offices just about in time to check and return a few calls and close for the day. Julian got through to his friend and asked about a deal. He said he’d think about it, but Julian knew by dealing with him from before he was going to do it. The new ship would be a great addition and maybe even the argon military would be interested as a new supply ship.

In less than a month the prototype was ready and it had been tested against light fighters and fighter drones and missiles. It was a wonder to see in action. With its good speed it could outrun the competition, making it a sure hit with the Teladi. It might even cause a resurgence of Station racing, only this time between freighter captains, he thought laughing. It was faster than a M3 and just as maneuverable. The rear turret and standard missile defense software made it a tough cookie, and he had an ad campaign started showing it in action, avoiding missiles and then getting to the station with time to burn. It was an instant success and he knew it was the next big thing. Now if he could just get one into his daughters’ hot little hands he’d be all set.

Julia was sitting eating her dinner in the café’ talking to a friend when the ad first came on, she looked up immediately to see a close copy of her favorite ship being chased by fighting drones and missiles and defeating them all with a new heavy turret, then it flew past two older slower freighters and docked in time to get the contract. It was the kind of ad the Teladi would eat up, and she hadn’t missed the idea either, then the big surprise as the credits ran and it said, “For sale NOW at the Brennan shipyards near you”. She almost jumped out of her chair to get to a comm’s station. Her dad was a genius, and she had gotten him started for sure, just what was this going to cost her anyway? She thought and made the call. She owned her new corvette/freighter in less than a week. She knew her dad had something to do with it, she barely had enough saved for a regular freighter, but she got it, and soon she was hitting the space lanes in real style. She even considered living right there, the captains quarters were every bit as big as her little apartment, but it wouldn’t be nearly as safe the way things were going. She was in love with this new ship. The rear turret and the missile launcher made it possible for her to feel secure while at work and the front guns were there just in case, everyone knew the rear turret was the big thing. She decided to thank her dad in person and she called and said she got her new ship. He knew, of course the price and plan was laid out weeks ago, but she appreciated the fact he left her earn it herself. They both laughed and Julian said not to be a stranger, they were both welcome anytime, call first. Julia laughed out loud and said she had to get some sleep. Now she had a ship to pay for. Julian threw her a kiss and closed the comm’s. She was happier than ever before, and her success was certain now that she had a good reputation and a ship capable of doing contracts in a day. Even Kyle was impressed she had saved enough to buy it with very little help from home, as he liked to say. She just reminded him their father owned a shipyard and only a dim watt would buy somewhere else. The point was made and they waved and went their ways again.

Chapter 7: Making Hay

Julia was in her glory. She had the best looking freighter in the sector and with her new reputation, she was in demand. One station owner even asked her to haul for him for a week straight. He had a new order in Boron space and they said they weren’t getting their cahoonas fresh enough, so she took the job, and for a week they had them so fresh they still mood, as she said. It was another job well done and she was finding that the bigger cargo the new ship could carry opened new doors for her as well. With the possibility of hauling 1200 units of ore, or silicone, she had new chances to buy and resell all around. Like the day she was hauling cahoonas to Kingdoms End, she dropped off the load and scanned just to see a silicon mine sitting completely full, with a price of 240 credits each she loaded up all the extra money she had. Then down through Argon space checking stations ‘til she found one in Three Worlds that needed silicon for their chip plant, they were nearly out and she actually made another trip to help fill their pods. It was a very fun and highly profitable day.

Kyle was doing just as well, he had steady customers now, and a few that popped in from time to time. He didn’t have to worry about a lot of old stock because the pirate activity was making for very good business for light missiles. Even his dad was helping, in an around about way. He had taken Julia’s idea about the new ship to heart and it was a big success. It had two main defenses, the rear turret, and the front missile battery, it could easily carry large numbers of missiles, and many people who were not skilled fighter pilots were loading lots of the light missiles for safety. He was making it hand over fist and he was thrilled to death. He called his grandmother from time to time for advice and was always happy to hear her agree with whatever he had decided, it made him feel he was on the right track, and she appreciated the call so she could keep an eye on him too. He hadn’t seen Julia in a week but his reports said she was seen in Kingdoms End, Three Worlds and a few other places. He had the business pages loaded to his desktop computer daily and all the best haulers and dealers were listed there. It was plain she was expanding her area and doing quite well on her own. He knew she would do well, she was never a dummy, just a ship nut, and she had what she always had wanted, and it even looked good too, he thought with a chuckle as he checked another delivery of missiles. He might have to consider another factory in a year or so, if these deals keep coming up, he thought with a smile.

Julian was sitting at his desk when Kyle, his father, walked in. He stood and they shook hands and smiled. He came over from time to time just to talk, and Julian knew he missed not going out running around like they used to. Once they had taken the old cruiser out looking for salvage just like the old days, but they didn’t really find anything, like they were really trying, he thought with a smile. They sat and talked about the kids and Kyle said that his name sake called Elena from time to time and asked questions. Since he made her slow down at Terracorp a few years ago she had a little extra time now and a call from Kyle was sure to get a good response. Julian said that Julia finally got enough money for her freighter a few days ago and Kyle smiled widely. He knew she liked the sleek good looks of the ship and it didn’t seem like a fat old freight hauler at all, he admitted that it looked very nice indeed, and Julian said the new design was flying off the assembly line as fast as they could make them. Once a week ago, the line had even stopped for a few hours because they ran out of bodies to modify and Julian had to call and see when the next shipment was coming. He was told very politely that it was a Split design and they wanted to sell a few too, and he couldn’t have every one of them made. Kyle just got a good laugh; it was a sure sign of prosperity when the dealers can’t make them fast enough. Julian agreed and said he owed it all to Julia, she had seen one of the first ads that the Split ran saying “coming soon” and she told her dad who then jumped on it. It was selling like hotcakes, but now he had a limit of how many he could buy, it was kind of funny and he thought about offering the Split a deal to buy the design from them. It would be expensive, but he could see it might be worth it.

Terracorp was booming, as much as Kyle and Elena wanted it too. The business owners of Argon saw them as the top business to beat but it was only a matter of time, because they weren’t even trying anymore. Kyle had convinced Elena years ago that the whole family could live comfortably on what they had already made, so after that, she should have a real life for a change. Of course that’s where he came in, they had a nice place on Earth right next to a big lake, and they liked to go there in Earths winter and see snow. They hadn’t seen snow like that in many years, it seldom snowed on Argon Prime, it was just a little warm, but the rainy season wasn’t the same. They had literally gone there for a vacation and walked in a snow storm for a while the first day it was so much more than they had remembered, and so invigorating to be in again, they bought a place right next door and they returned every year to see the winter scenes. They weren’t the only ones either, many argons who saw snow for the first time loved it, the cool air and the white flakes made them ooo and ahhh, the wealthy of argon had many good homes here, it was a yearly favorite and it wasn’t hard to see old friends or business rivals sitting at a local restaurant smiling when you walked in. Julian had been there a few times, but he didn’t see the big deal, of course he never saw the wonderful attraction of Earth right from the beginning, he was all argon.

Even with the threat of constant pirate attacks now, the economy of Argon had never been better; Julian even wondered if it wasn’t because of them. It opened new avenues of business that were getting a little stale, like the ship market, and weapons sales and research. This was booming too, he smiled to see what a tiny change in thinking could do to the whole galaxy in just a few years. He decided to give his friend a call when no one was watching and see if things were as good as they seemed. He was betting the “adjustment” that was made fixed a lot. It was a good thought, at least. The link buzzed a few times and Ben picked it up, he didn’t look too well and Julian was worried for him, so he asked if he was ok.

“A touch of the Argon Flu, I think.” He said smiling as Julian chuckled, of course he wouldn’t tell him either way.

“Then go get some help and take a while off, you know by now that place doesn’t need you watching it all the time.” Julian said smiling. Ben’s eyes opened wide at the thought Julian had made.

“You do understand a lot more as time goes on don’t you?” he asked with a weak smile.

“I know it’s your life’s work, and your smart enough to guarantee it will continue, so go to a hospital and get some help. You’ll feel better in a few days.” Julian insisted. Ben just smiled and nodded, he didn’t seem too worried about it.

“How are things, you said an adjustment was needed and the last few months things have started to turn around, it’s almost back to the old days.” Julian said seriously.

“I think it’s better, the law enforcement community has been recharged, and the military are getting it together a little more, but I’m not sure it’s enough, things down south are heating up, and the Dragoons have taken a few prisoners so far. The Paranid colony they have been harassing are up in arms, but they haven’t stopped them yet. It’s beginning to look like the Kha’ak all over again,” He said coughing.

Julian was worried for his friend, he asked him to let him come get him, he was sure he needed medical attention, but Ben wouldn’t even let Julian know where he was.

“I’ll go for meds as soon as we get done talking, I promise.” Ben said with a smile and Julian nodded and hung up the line. “Liar” he thought, but there was nothing he could do, so he turned his attention to the more immediate problem, these Dragoons were messing with the Paranid in the southern colonies, they might become a serious threat yet. He decided to let the kids know to watch out, he could do it in a way that they wouldn’t recognize as foresight, and he’d feel better about it.

Chapter 8: Trouble Intensifies

Julian made the call to Kyle asking how he was doing. Kyle was there with his big grin saying things couldn’t be better. He was doing very well and it seemed that the missile business could go on indefinitely, so he was planning a new factory right next door, maybe someday have a weapons complex of his own. Julian smiled widely, and told him he saw a report that weapons use in the next few years was going to skyrocket, due to an as yet unknown threat the Paranids were talking about candidly. Kyle’s eyes popped he knew inside information when he heard it, and he was more thrilled then he could let on. A war wasn’t in anyone’s best interest, except maybe the weapons dealers and military, he was one and had friends in the other, he’d confirm this soon as they were done talking, he decided. Julian saw the wheels running faster in Kyle’s eyes, he had heard what he said, but to him it just meant more profits, he made sure to tell him to let his sister know to be careful too, and Kyle gave Julian Julia’s private number with a big grin. He might hear about this later, but he thought it the right thing to do. Julian thanked him and closed the comm’s. He sat looking at the new number, she purposefully hadn’t given it to him for some reason, and he knew what it was. She was out now and she was proving she was as sure of herself and independent as he had been, but this was serious, he finally decided. He buzzed the link and it was opened, voice only, she obviously wasn’t near a comm’s station right now.

“Hi, its dad, don’t yell at Kyle for letting me have your new number, I just wanted to say that I heard a rumor that the Paranid were having troubles down south, some new race giving them a hard time, so watch out for new ships that might not be friendly.” He concluded as he waited a second for the return.

“Thanks for the info, dad, call anytime, well, almost any time.” She said and chuckled. His face got red and he wasn’t sure what was happening, but after a second he decided it might be revenge for all those times… he chuckled and went back to work.

Julia laughed as she rolled over and smiled,

“What about that. Mr. Law enforcement, are we headed for a new war?” she asked as Craig stopped getting dressed to smile wide.

“No comment,” he said as he leaned back down and kissed her again. “I have to go. I’ll give you a call this week and we can go to a concert or something, your choice.” He said and she smiled widely and told him to be careful out there. He nodded and said “you too.” They both got dressed and went their separate ways for another week or so.

Julia hadn’t been looking for a serious relationship and she still swears she hasn’t got one, but Craig is the best thing she has had happen to her yet, and she’s not complaining. After the first day he helped save her from the pirates, they seemed drawn to each other, he was on patrol in the same areas where she worked a lot. After a while he started saying hi every time they past each other and she had to start thinking about it a little. He was tall and good looking and a lawman, not a pirate like a lot of the other guys who were always asking her out, but she was still not ready for anything full time, and all the consequences that went with it, but dating was becoming very nice, a habit she didn’t want to break. She smiled and decided that maybe they’d just see what he had in mind as time went on.

Julia was in the middle of a three day contract hauling silicon from mines to a chip plant. They specialized in chips for missile guidance systems and business was booming. She was making great money too, and they were very happy they had her doing the job. The new ship was getting a little more used and the interior was looking like a good cleaning was due, she thought as she ran back for another load. She was making enough now that the price she spent didn’t look that bad now. It had taken her months to save it up, but with a bigger ship she’d have her money back in another week or so. The returns were much better and she just plain loved this ship. She knew now why her dad still had that old C class cruiser sitting around to play with sometimes. It was his favorite back then and he just couldn’t let it go.

Craig was flying to a meeting on Argon One. As commander of his unit it was a weekly briefing that he dared not miss. He sat in the room filled with other lieutenants and captains saying hi to friends when Commander Harris walked in, they all snapped to attention and saluted and sat back down.

“The pirate threat is being handled very professionally by our border patrols at the moment.” Commander Harris stated, as a few got big smiles for a job done well,

“However, we may be seeing increased activity in some sectors by a new source, the Paranid have sent messages saying the a new menace has been harassing them for a few weeks now and they have warned us they might be sending scouts up this way, so be careful. These new ships seem slower than most of ours, but the armor is impressive. They seem to use that in place of shields, so we have to assume that it does an equal job.” He stopped as people chattered amount themselves.

“So stay alert, and report any and all new vessels you see on your daily patrols, dismissed.” He said as they jumped to their feet and saluted again.

“So they are coming this way,” Craig thought, “I wonder how Mr. Brennan knew it ahead of time?” he wondered but then he was a big businessman and had friends everywhere. It was likely that he had Paranid friends who warned him about the new ships a week or more ago. It did make sense, but since he was seeing Julia, he was sort of in the middle here, he walked up after the meeting and told the Commander that the word about the new ships was already out, the business community was aware of them now, and he was not surprised. They kept their fingers on the pulse of the whole galaxy, the fact that he had heard himself a week ago, and had just confirmed it just meant that Argon Intelligence needed more or better equipment, something he had always said. He thanks Craig for letting him know and he saluted and went to work. He’d report this to the senate, Commander Harris thought, when a businessman has better or equal intelligence then me…he walked away shaking his head.

Julian had warned people as well as he could now it was up to them, he was worrying about these new people too, and even Ben didn’t know much, maybe it was time for another salvage run, he thought with a big grin.

Chapter 9: A First Look

Julian called his dad that afternoon and asked if he was up for a ride. They hadn’t done this for quite a while so even Elena would be good with it. They met at Terracorp and Julian brought his old cruiser. It made it look like an old salvage run for old times’ sake, but Kyle had a feeling things were a little different this time, but he kept it to himself. Julian was sure to be fully loaded with cells for the trip. One thing he didn’t want was to get too far from home without E cells for the return.

They first jumped into Split Fire and then had a talk, Julian told him he had info that a new race was in the southern sectors harassing Paranids there and he wanted to see for himself what was going on. Kyle was all smiles, it had been too long since they were out and he was ready for some excitement. They then jumped through the south gate into Priests pity; Julian knew a merchant there and stopped by his station to talk. He told him that the Dragoons were hitting the sectors south of Friars Retreat and they seemed to just move along slowly attacking any ships that they found. They had no shields, but their armor was extremely effective against laser weapons. They were slow ships and no one had seen them use a jump drive yet, they were just slowly moving through the sectors and causing some severe problems to stations and freighters they encountered. There was some strange ideas what they were looking for, but no one who met one had ever returned to confirm it, he said. Julian thanked him, and he and his father jumped into Friars Retreat.

The local security force was active there and it was suggested that they leave before anything bad happened to them. Julian took that as a warning the Dragoons had been there already and they were forced back, so he thanked the officer for his concern and said they could take care of themselves. He just snorted and closed the link. They discussed it and decided the only way to see for themselves was to just go do it. They ran through the gate into Spring of Belief just as the officer tried to stop them, but it was too late.
They looked around and down at the south gate there seemed like a lot of scrap lying around so they worked that way. As they approached a small ship came through the gate and started towards them. Julian got a good scan and it had no shields, but was heavily armed with cannons and missiles. He turned away and was a few miles from it when the first swarm missiles were launched. It was a swarm of 8 missiles the scan showed they were equal to silkworms, and with so many, even the old cruiser was going to take a big hit. Julian opened up with his weapons and started shooting a few down, in a second he had two shockwave generators running and all but one missile was destroyed. He thought it only fair; he dropped a silkworm on the new ship in return. The explosion showed he hit it, but the scans showed only mild damage. He was impressed that such a small ship took that hit so well. It launched again but the shockwaves just dropped most of them before they got close. He obviously was not doing well and retreated towards the gate when a hornet from the cruiser stopped it dead. Julian moved into range and commed the ship with no results, but he tried again and again until finally the reply came.

“You fight well, but we will prevail here, and we will feed on your bodies and families forever.” The picture was a large reptilian creature, much bigger than a Teladi, and in a second the ship exploded. It had set a self destruct device to keep from being captured, a serious threat to say the least.

“Meat eating reptiles, that cant be good.” Kyle said seriously, and Julian knew now why the Paranid weren’t saying much. They returned home and sat talking outside the Terracorp HQ, Kyle said he was going to talk to Commander Harris and tell him what happened, and Julian said ok, he’d let it up to him, but he had someone he wanted to give this new info to also, and he was in a hurry to get it done. He dropped his dad off and went home, he copied the info he had scanned and the comm’s he had gotten from the reptile and sat down and called Ben.

“Yes, what this time?” Ben asked and he did look a little better.

“I have some new info for you, sending now.” Julian said seriously as Ben first examined the scan and then listened to the comm’s message.

“This is most interesting; it seems they are actually a sentient meat eating species. I would have bet that not possible, to be this advanced you’d expect them to be more civilized, but the scans don’t lie, good job by the way, that hornet was probably the only thing you had that would stop it so quickly.” Ben said smiling. Julian thanked him and Ben said he’d have to get a more detailed scan, but he could take care of that himself, he’d let Julian know what they were all about as soon as he found out. Julian agreed and closed the comm’s link as he heard a voice say,

“I think we need to have a little talk about your friend Ben,” Saya said as he looked up to see his lovely wife standing by the door. Oops, he thought this was going to be ugly to be sure.

‘Ok, what do you need to know?” Julian asked with a big smile.

“Every once and a while you come in here and call him, either asking for info or giving him some, like today, what’s he to you that you need to keep such close ties with him?” she asked seriously, Julian’s mind ran a mile a minute and finally he said,

“Bens an info broker, we exchange info that I get sometimes and he lets me know things he thinks I might want to know, we’ve known each other for years, but he’s very secretive.” Julian said smiling. Saya thought about it for a minute, it did cover it pretty well, but she wasn’t sure.

“And what info did you have for him today?” she asked.

“While dad and I were out we ran into one of those new ships, we disabled it with a hornet missile, but, it self destructed, so we couldn’t get the ship. I got a good scan of it so I sent it to Ben for his files, and he’s going to let me know whatever else he learns.” Julian said, smiling all the time.

“I know there’s more to it than this, but if you’re that serious about it then I guess it’s not that important for me to bother about.” She said smiling. Julian felt bad for lying to her but she wouldn’t believe him anyway he was sure, so he added one more thing to make her feel better.

“Ok, you caught me, but I didn’t want to worry you, after all we have kids out there now, but here it is. This new race is a reptile race that is traveling through space looking for food, that means us, and any other people they can get. I didn’t want to scare you, but you asked so there it is.” Julian said and played the comm’s message for her. Her eyes popped and he could see she was frightened, he stood and pulled her close and kissed her saying his dad was right now on the way to tell Commander Harris all about it, we’ll be ready if they get past the Paranid, Julian said and she held him tight and agreed.

Kyle asked for permission to dock at Argon One and got it. He was escorted to the Commanders office and was asked to sit, after Commander Harris finished a call he was on he turned with a big smile and asked what he could do to help. Kyle took a deep breath and started.

“My son and I just came from Friars Retreat.” He said as the commanders eyes popped.

“We heard some rumors and just wanted to see for ourselves, we got to see one of the new ships and got a good scan of it.” he stopped and dropped the chip on the commanders desk.
“We were attacked and we attacked it in return, but they have very solid armor, even for a vessel of this size silkworm missiles did next to nothing.” He said as Harris watched the screen and read the scans.

“I know we’re not as close to Argon Intelligence as we once were, but I had to bring this new info to your attention, there’s also a comm’s message we got before the self destruction occurred. The commander turned it on and listened and his eyes popped again, it was plain this was something he had not known ‘til today.

“I thank you on behalf of Argon Intelligence, and be assured you have a welcome open here at any time.” He said as Kyle shook his hand and he walked away. He opened a com to an old friend and asked, as Ban Danna came on screen,

“How serious can I take Kyle Brennan’s reports if and when he drops by?” he asks, Ban eyes went wide, if Kyle was dropping by argon intelligence it must be serious.

“I’d trust him or any member of his family with my life, I already have.” Ban said seriously and Commander Harris nodded and thanked him for his help and closed the screen. This was every bit as bad as he had heard, it was time to get better supplies in and on board their crafts, and they were going to need them.

Chapter 10: The Word Gets Out
Julian and Saya were eating dinner a few days later when they got a call. Kyle said they needed to see the news and they rushed in and turned it on. There was a picture of a large, possibly cruiser type ship wreaking havoc on a number of smaller ships. The Paranid had turned back the scouts several times in Friars Retreat, but this new ship caught them completely off guard. It fired swarm missiles and heavy guns and several fighters and corvettes were destroyed. A Paranid destroyer moved in and after many tense moments the cruiser was badly injured, it tried to return to the gate where it came from, but didn’t make it, under a hail of BPPC fire it was destroyed, and scans of the wreckage were commenced.

At this point they saw the camera crews and forced them to leave the system, but the word was out now, and the other races wanted to know more. Delegates from the other races were seen talking to reporters the rest of the evening, and into the night, always saying these new ships just appeared on the southern boarders and they wouldn’t go away. They kept trying to gain access to the stations in the sector and no one really knew why, they spoke very seldom and it was always a sort of threat. They were going to send ships to help defend the boarder, and the Priest Duke had said he approved of the plan. If they came through in large numbers any help would be appreciated.

Julia was eating her dinner too when the report came on. She immediately sat and watched as the big ship was destroyed and several people around her cheered. It was a good looking ship, she thought, but I’m glad they’re so slow, and so far away. The news reports for the rest of the night were about the incident and even the Priest Duke got in on it saying anyone who wanted could send help.

“Craig,” she thought and went back to her room and called him.

“Are you alright, you look scared to death.” Craig asked as he first saw her.

“Have you seen the news, the Paranid are asking for some help with those odd ships and I was worried you’d have to go.” She said as he smiled a warm smile and thanked her for worrying about him.

“I’m with the Argon Security Force, we patrol the home sectors while the regular Navy does all this long range stuff, but we’re going on alert just in case. Don’t worry, I’ll be right here so they have a long ways to come for me to see them, more than likely, I’ll see all my aliens just like you, on the news,” he said with a chuckle. She gave him a dirty look, she was serious, and she hadn’t realized ‘til this minute how much she really cared for him.

“I was just worried for you, that’s all.” She apologized, but he smiled even wider and said,

“Do you have any idea how much I love you?” he asked very seriously. Even though she was sure this wasn’t a really serious relationship, at least not yet, she was thrilled to hear it and said so, well there went that idea, she thought and he threw her a kiss and they closed the comm’s for now.

She sat on the edge of her bed with a big grin, he had said the “L” word, and she had admitted it. It was sooner then she had expected, but she couldn’t think of anyone better. It might mean talking a little more about it, maybe making some decisions about better living space, eventually, but for the most part she was very, very happy.

On the other hand, Craig sat thinking to himself. ”What did I just say, omg, I said I loved her, she’s always said she wasn’t ready. I don’t want to chase her away, but she said ok, she loved me too.” He thought in shock. “I’m doing better than I thought, maybe we can go out in a few days and talk some more, maybe a nice place we could share…” he smiled to sit back thinking of having her there all the time. It seemed like a dream, but he was wide awake, and very happy.

The next day Julia was working when the comm’s buzzed, she answered it and her Mom was on the link.

“Hi Mom, what’s up?” she asked as her mother just chuckled.

“It’s your birthday tomorrow and I wanted to see if a nice girl/girl shopping trip was in order.” She said smiling wide. Julia laughed she hadn’t thought of it because she didn’t shop nearly as much as she used to, for obvious reasons.

“I’d love to, just us girls, but I don’t shop at the places I used to, and so we’ll have to adjust.” She said with a chuckle. Her Mom assured her for her birthday she could shop anywhere she wanted and Julia just smirked and thanked her.

It was all set and they met at the station the next day. Julia’s dad had to get a big hug in and gave her a nice credit chip for her birthday, that was going to help she thought, she asked what they were giving Kyle, it was his birthday too. Her dad just laughed saying he hadn’t a clue, Kyle was doing so well he had whatever he wanted, pretty much, and he wasn’t getting a new station for his birthday. They all laughed and Julia said if he did she expected a lot more than this, holding up the chip, and they hugged and her and her mother went shopping and goofing off for her birthday.

Julian called Kyle and said happy birthday to him and he appreciated it. He told him his Mom and sister were out on the town and he wanted to know what he wanted for his birthday, and don’t even ask for another station, he said laughing. Kyle burst out himself and said a nice call and good wishes were all he expected, since another station was ruled out, but he mentioned he was almost ready to buy another one anyway, so don’t be too surprised if the yards called to tell him soon. Julian smiled a proud smile and told him he would see he got one for cost and they both hung up. Kyle was very happy, his dad hadn’t forgotten his birthday, and he offered him another station at cost. Depending on exactly what that was, he might just make it, and he thought and called to see.

The new station was delivered the next day and since he ordered it on his birthday his dad saw to it a complex construction kit came with it, Kyle was happier than he could say, he was less than a year after graduation and he owned his own complex. He hoped it was a sign of things to come.

The ladies walked and talked and had lunch together on Argon Prime. Julia was having a great time and her mother noticed she bought a few things that required, well, someone to see them, to say the least. So while they were eating she couldn’t wait any longer.

“And who is all the nice new lingerie’ for?” she asked almost without looking up. Julia almost choked, she didn’t think her Mom would notice, but then she was her Mom.

“That would be Lt. Craig Gardna, Argon Security Force.” She said without looking up.

“I take it he’s handsome,” Saya prodded a little,

“Oh, yes he’s handsome,” Julia said looking away for fear her mother might not approve.

“And I take it your happy with him then.” Saya asked very quietly.

“The happiest I’ve ever been.” Julia said seriously and finally looked at her Mom, who was not upset but smiling very warmly.

“Then that settles it, we must have the two of you over for dinner some time soon, your father will want to meet someone you care for so much.” Saya said laughing.

“If he doesn’t want to take any parts off while we’re there, I accept.” Julia said laughing and her mother assured her that she’d keep her dad away from sharp objects for the duration of the visit. They both chuckled and Saya asked a few more questions that made Julia’s eyes open wide.

“Mom, I’m not the kind of woman who tells stuff like that!” she said and they both got a good laugh.

Chapter 11: Friends Helping Friends

Julia was back at work and in a few hours found another contract. It was a good one; it would take her maybe 4 days to fill the order. The cahoona bakery was having a huge order from the military, they were stocking up just in case something big started. They were running full out and they decided that Julia could probably just keep up. She accepted and checked the fine print, it was a normal contract with the option to add help if she wanted, at the same price and conditions. She smiled and started in. She was almost to The Wall when she saw a familiar signature coming the other way.
“Kris, is that you?” she called to an immediate reply.

“Yep, small system, we bump into each other more and more.” She said smiling, she liked Julia, she had a rich family, but she was out here working like almost everyone else. Of course in that ship…She thought smiling.

“I could use a hand if you’re not signed up yet.” Julia said smiling. Kris was caught a little off guard, seldom did anyone ask for help doing deliveries, she was happy to see it, and accepted quickly.

“Good, I just got a big contract from cahoona bakery beta it’s going to take days, so if you want I’ll take you on as a partner and we can fly together, it’ll get done quicker and we can both make some good money.” Julia said as Kris just nods and smiles. She had no idea Julia was this good a friend, but she certainly is now, she thinks.

They formed up and started their first job as a contract team. It was great Julia thought, to have someone along to talk to and they got along well. They made several trips that day and the owners of the bakery were thrilled. With the extra ship running they had a big enough stockpile to run all night while the carriers got some sleep, and were back at it the next day.

Julia asked Kris if she had a chance to upgrade her cargo yet and she said no, she needed to pay the rent first, but Julia just smiled and said she’d help her. She had a plan for them to fly teams to do contracts. Her Buster could easily keep up with the new freighter and they could take on bigger and bigger contracts all the time. Kris was floored. She had no idea Julia was planning on being such a big business person, but them it did run in the family, she decided.

The 4 day contract was nearly over when Kris announced she had gotten a cargo upgrade. It wasn’t a full upgrade but she gained another 25 units, so it was going to help. Julia advertised their new business to the station owner and he was happy to see cooperation between young people, he said they would get all his business and he would start passing around the news to other stations. With the combined size of the two ships, they might be able to get contracts that usually go to full size freighters, he said, because they were much faster and they both had proven dependable.

They were on their last few trips when Julia got another call, the cahoona bakery owner was as good as his word, they were spreading the word for them, and Julia made a deal for a second contract to haul for a new ore mine in Herons Nebula. She told Kris the good news and she was very happy. She had a good reputation, but with her little Buster she didn’t get a lot of bigger contracts, she just couldn’t keep up, but now she was working with a good friend and together they were making a significant dent in some of the bigger contracts, things were finally going her way, she thought. They finished the last run and Julia said,

“ok, I don’t know about you, but I’m starving, it almost lunch time so let’s grab something before we start on the ore contract.” And Kris smiled and nodded.

“Watch this,” Julia said as they flew past Kyle’s station.

“Kyle, you old dog you, what’s for lunch, got enough for a couple of working girls to join in?” she asked as Kyle’s puzzled face came on the screen, the split screen showed Julia and Kris were asking to come in, and he smiled and said,

“Sure sis, my replicator is your replicator, come on in.” they both chuckled as the two ships docked.

“Never pay for something we can get for free.” Julia said quietly to Kris as she exited her ship, they both chuckled and Kris was sure there was a plan here somewhere, but she didn’t mind they were good people.

They sat and eat and had a cup while Kyle as usual bragged about how well he was doing. Julia and Kris tried hard not to laugh at him, but barely covered it. They had a nice time and soon the girls were ready to leave. Julia thanked him for a free lunch and gave him a quick hug and to his surprise Kris walked over and gave him a peck on the cheek and thanked him too. He was all smiles and as the girls left he decided that free lunch was worth it.

As the girls got back to work Kris couldn’t help but laugh and Julia knew she saw through the plan. She was a little embarrassed she saw through it so quickly, but she didn’t say anything so she let it go.

“Do you think Kyle likes me?” Kris said after a while and Julia just smiled, she was ready to at least talk about it.

“Yep, I think he does, he’s pretty much a big business person, but he always seems to take off a few minutes when you’re around.” She said, shamelessly hinting to her friend. Kris laughed out loud for a minute, and Julia asked her what was so funny.

“Your terrible, getting me to tag along with you and then sneaking me in to see your brother, shame on you, it’s a little obvious don’t you think?” she asked smiling. Julia was caught but then she was still smiling, so…

“Ok, maybe I dropped by today to see what he’d do, but he’s my brother, and I worry about him. It’s a big place and he’s there all alone, it can’t be good for him.” She said seriously, and Kris just nodded, she wasn’t smiling as wide but she was thinking about it.

“Don’t think I’m trying to pimp out my friend to my brother, I just thought maybe I’d see if he was really interested or not, after all, your both single and good friends, so, I’m sorry if it upset you.” She said seriously, but Kris just smiled all the wider, with a slight red face.
“I didn’t say I was upset, and I didn’t think for a second you were trying to “pimp” me to your brother, after all I’m a big girl, I’ll make up my own mind about that stuff and don’t you forget it.” She said a little sternly, and then got a big smile and winked.

Julia apologized again, and they started the new contract. She made sure she said that work was work, and time off was her own, she wanted her to stay and be her partner and they could both do better in the long run. Kris was happy she asked and agreed, saying a few free meals didn’t hurt anyone either and they both chuckled and went back to work.

Kyle was all smiles, he had spent a little time off just talking to his sister and new friend, and he was sure Julia was setting him up. It was a little obvious, but then he was also a little slow to act himself. It was possibly his only flaw he thought, well maybe there might be one more somewhere, he admitted as he went back to work. As far as he was concerned, they could stop in for meals anytime, and maybe Kris would stop in sometime alone, after a while of course, he thought and decided he might just owe his sister a favor for this.

Chapter 12: The Next Call

Julian was working and trying to decide about buying out the Split shipyards on the new Fast Freighter. It would definitely pay for itself, but it might be a little expensive at first. He was sitting telling Saya what he had in mind when the comm’s link buzzed, without thinking he answered it, and Ben was there. He immediately saw Julian was not alone but it was too late and a quiet “oops” was heard.

“Hi, Ben you remember my wife Saya don’t you?” Julian said quickly with a grin and a wink.

“I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure in person, but it’s an honor to meet you.” He said very formally.

“Hello, Ben, Julian and I were talking about you just the other day.” She said smiling her best smile.

“Oh, you were,” he said at a loss for words.

“Yes, Saya has heard me talking to you several times, and asked who you were, so today she gets to meet you. I told her we were friends for years and we exchange info all the time. As my best friend and my favorite info broker you’ve helped me a lot.” He said with a smile, as Ben caught on and smiled back.

“Yes, and I was calling to tell you I have some new data about the Dragoon ships, if your interested of course, I got a very complete scan of their armor and the metallurgy is quite unique. As a shipyard owner I thought you’d be interested in what is obviously a huge improvement in armor protection.” Ben said and waited.

“Well I’ll let you boys talk business, it’s been nice meeting you Ben, take care.” Saya said as she walked away.

“Thanks honey, see you later.” Julian said as she left the room.

“Info broker heh, nice one,” Ben said smiling again.

“It works, so what did you find out?” he asked finally.

“Actually just what I said, this info broker thing covers very well, and it’s a good move. I have those scans if you’re interested, and believe me they are a big improvement over what we use now.” Ben said and Julian took the scan results. It was a different composition for sure and he would have to have some research done on it.

“Thank you Ben, I’ll see what my engineers think of this.” Julian said and Ben just nodded.

“I never had the chance to see your wife up close, just the news things some time ago. You lucky bastard you,” Ben said and the link went closed. Julian smiled and decided that it was his turn to bother Saya at her desk, he laughed and walked away.

Julian’s engineers were impressed with the new armor design. It was more than twice the strength of the armor they used now. They had used shields for so long that armor research was highly overlooked. They thought that an immediate upgrade to the new armor was necessary and Julian agreed.

In a few weeks a new factory was set up in Home of Light and the new armor was being produced. The Navy had immediate need of it, and Julian gave them big deals on upgrading their older ships with the new armor. He was on the cutting edge again, and it was all because of Ben and his magical, mystical spy sats that no one ever saw. He’d have to ask about those some time, he decided, but they were just part of Ben’s master machine and like it, he doubted he’d ever see one.

The comm’s link buzzed the next day and Julian grabbed it, to his surprise it was an old friend.

“Ban Danna, how are you, you old pirate you,” Julian started, of course Ban was never a pirate but it was one of Julian’s favorite expressions, and everyone lets it slide.

“I’m doing very well, thank you, but I wanted to say I was very surprised the other day when Commander Harris told me your father had been in to see him.” Ban said with a smile. Julian knew of course but it was a while ago and he wasn’t sure that this visit was about that.

“Yes, he had some info from a little trip we went on so he dropped it off.” Julian said wondering what was really happening here.

“Well it’s good to see the Brennan’s are still watching out for Argon, and this new armor technology is truly amazing. It’s a direct copy of the Dragoons new armor isn’t it?” he asked, knowing it was true, the ads even mentioned it.

“We are and will always be watching out for Argon.” Julian said seriously.

“Ok, then now for some news I found very interesting the other day, myself.” Ban said and Julian slid forward in his chair, Ban was calling to give Him info, this was a rare thing indeed.

“You and I have been close friends for many years and your father before you, but I never thought something like this could happen.” He said looking serious. What did they do, what got Ban upset enough to call after all this time?? Julian was worried badly, he didn’t want this old friend ever to be upset with him, and he was ready to say so when Ban burst out laughing.

“It appears we may be related someday soon.” Ban said and Julian sat with open mouth, he had no idea what he was talking about and it was very clear.

“My granddaughter seems very interested in Kyle; they have been seeing each other for a few weeks now. From what I heard, Julia set them up and Kyle seems very pleased about it.” Ban said smiling widely. Julian was still totally clueless.

“Your granddaughter is that Becky we’re talking about. It had been a long time since they had seen any of Bans grandchildren.

“No, no, Becky is married now, this would be Kris, remember her don’t you? I know it’s been a while…” Ban said and it was plain Kyle was being very quiet about this.

“Ok, Kris was the little skinny blond girl wasn’t she?” Julian strained to remember.

Ban starts laughing out loud to Julian’s dismay, but he just smiles.

“Well she was when you saw her last; it’s been a few years. She graduated with your kids and has a job now working as Julia’s partner in a small hauling company. They seem to be doing really well too.” He said smiling. Julian dropped his head in his hands and laughs, he definitely needs to keep better track of these kids he decides.

He admits to Ban he knows nothing about this ‘til today and they get a chuckle together, Ban is thrilled one of his grandchildren is interested in a Brennan, it wasn’t planned, except maybe for Julia, as he heard, but he is very happy about it, and so is Julian, they talk some more and Julian says he’s going to have to ask Kyle about this, Ban laughs and says maybe he owes Kyle an apology, after all he’s kept this from his father for months now. Julian tells Ban to call more often and they close the link. Kyle and Kris Danna, why doesn’t someone tell me these things, he thinks and goes to tell Saya.

Well, Saya didn’t know either, and she was just as surprised as Julian. Kyle was always a quiet kid but he likes to brag a lot. If he found someone he was really happy with she thought he’d be on the link glowing. Maybe she had him all wrong after all, he seems to like a little more privacy now that he’s getting older, she thought.

It was decided that a call was necessary, and they stood together as the link went through. Being completely brain dead, Kyle rolled over and answered it. There stood his parents and here he laid with the new woman in his life, her blond hair and baby face laying softly on his chest, she saw the screen on and screamed at him and in a second the link went dead again.

Julian and Saya looked totally surprised for good reason then both burst out laughing and had to hold each other up. That call had lasted about 2 seconds but it was worth a thousand words, they knew it would only be a little while now ‘til he returned it, and they couldn’t wait for this explanation.

“Got to admit she’s cute,” Julian said finally as Saya gave him a soft swat, and they both chuckled.

Kyle waited ‘til they were a little more “presentable” and they both were there when the comm’s link was opened again. He formally introduced Kris as both his parents introduced themselves and except for a few chuckles here and there, it was very official and formal, Kyle thought. He told them they had been seeing each other for a few weeks and he hadn’t called to “report” it because he was waiting to see how serious they were getting. Kris immediately gave him and peck on the cheek and put her arm around him, he smiled and the family smiled back and understood. While Kyle was embarrassed to death by the whole thing, Kris seemed very happy to get it out in the open. It didn’t seem too much of a secret that Kyle might have been dragging his feet to make this official, but it was over now, and Julian and Saya welcomed Kris into the family. At that even Kyle had to get a big smile.

Saya mentioned that a dinner was in the planning stages for new “family” members to come and be seen and visit a little, she’d let them know exactly when and they were expected to attend. Kris was all smiles and Kyle nodded they would come. The comm’s link went dead again and Saya was smiling widely.

“Now I’ll have to actually set a date for the dinner, “she said.

“I mentioned it to Julia a while ago and haven’t heard anything from her and her new man.” She said as Julian turned to look her way.

“Oh, yes, her too.” She said and walked away laughing.

“No one tells me anything here!” Julian thought and walked back into his office smiling.

Chapter 13: The Family and Problems Grow

Saya finally decided she had waited long enough. She called Julia and told her the time and date for the new welcome dinner. No excuses and she mentioned she and Julian had officially met Kris on the link the other day. Julia was all smiles and said her and Kris were good friends, and that she started this little company so she could help get them together, but it had turned out better than she had expected. Saya was pleased and said to make sure Craig was ready, because Julian had been told already he was coming. Julia smiled and nodded. She would give Craig a call and set it up.

A week later the dinner happened and it was the first official meeting face to face of the new family members. Saya and Julian were happy they had all come and Saya was sure Julian was impressed by Craig when he walked in the room in his dress uniform. He came to impress and it worked.

Julian had been wondering and Saya kept him in the dark about Julia’s new man. He was relieved just to see he wasn’t a pirate, at least. Kris made sure she was accepted as soon as possible, hugging Saya and Julian and saying how much she loved Kyle. They both smiled a lot about it, she was making sure they understood she was here to stay, and Kyle didn’t say a thing to stop her either. Julian decided that right then and there, she was the perfect woman for his son, she was attractive and well spoken, but also just a bit more forceful than he was, and he could use a little help from time to time, he decided.

The evening was a big success and everyone was happy when they left, Saya ask Kris if she had moved in yet and she said no and gave Kyle a dirty look, he swallowed hard and Saya could see it was coming soon.

She also asked if Craig and Julia were living together yet and he quickly said that he was looking for a nice place for the two of them, to which Julia just smiled very wide. It might have been the first she heard of it, Saya decided.

The kids left and Julian and Saya sat on the sofa and held each other’s hands and talked. After a little time checking out these new people, Julian had decided his kids had chosen well. Kris was very pretty and hard working, and Craig was an Argon Law enforcement officer, you couldn’t get much better than that, he decided, and Saya was very proud of him and said so. The family was growing and they were all happy the trouble was far away, for now.

As Craig flew them back home, Julia couldn’t help but ask.

“So, were looking now, but did you see any good places yet?” she asked.
Craig was all smiles; he said he saw 2 places, one really cheap. And for good reason, it was large enough, but the place was a dump. The other was nice but he thought it too small, so he kept looking. She smiled and said that she wasn’t going to be too hard to please, about an apartment at least, and he smiled and said he was, and he wanted the best they could afford.

She even mentioned that with her new business going that they could probably get something a little nicer than he thought. He finally accepted the idea that she would help, and they would look together for a while to see. It was plain to him she was ready to get on with their new life, and even though he wanted to be able to take care of her while they were having children, a nice place was definitely needed.

Kris and Kyle were almost back to his station complex when she finally asked.

“You DO love me don’t you,” she asked, and Kyle swallowed hard, why did she have to start the conversation like that?

“You know I do,” he said smiling.

“Then when can I move my stuff in, most guys can’t wait to have a woman right close by, but you don’t seem to care.” She said acting hurt. Kyle could see the set up, but he did want her there full time, so might as well get it over with.

“Ok, you stay the night, and you can move all your stuff in tomorrow, if we’re going to be together full time and your sure, then let’s just do it.” He said as she slid over and gave him a big kiss on the cheek. He smiled widely and they rushed home.

Julia helped Kris move in the next day. She was all smiles and since they were good friends, she got her a housewarming present. It was a nice new outfit she was sure Kyle would approve of. She thanked her and they laughed and talked while changing Kyle’s bachelor pad into a nice set of rooms made for a married couple. They didn’t really have to do an official ceremony, the law said anyone living together for 6 months was officially married, and many couples just went that way.

Kris said she’d be there to help when Julia was ready too, and she laughed, saying Craig was all macho and wanted to do everything himself, but good places were expensive so she was convincing him they could work together and get a better place than either one could afford. Kris laughed saying she met a couple of those macho types, but she was always a little outspoken too much for them, they liked their women quiet and helpless, and that just wasn’t her. Julia just laughed and said that Craig was getting used to her having things to say and opinions of her own, he seemed to like it, but he still wanted to be the big “provider” for his family. They both laughed and they agreed that things were going to be interesting for the first few months at least.

The next day Julian grabbed a call at his desk, it was Ben with more info. This was getting to be a habit, he thought with a big smile, maybe Ben was just getting lonely after all this time. He knew he would.

“I dropped a few of my sats in Friars Retreat and Spring of Belief, and I got some really good scans of the Dragoon ships. They are really weird. That is, they don’t seem to have a central computer on board, just a few small control nodes, but nothing big enough to fly it through stellar space, and I can’t find any sort of jump drive system on board. It’s like they traveled for months just to get there, and then they refuse to go home. Maybe they CANT go home, Can you see how much food it would take to run all the way back wherever they came from at that speed. It would be like traveling everywhere without seta... Just odd.” He said shaking his head. It didn’t make much sense to Julian, why send out ships that were so slow, the crew could starve to death on the trip.

“The one thing I did learn is they are hunters for sure, I have info they have special “freezer” ships with them somewhere, probably carrying all the food for the trip, maybe all the food they can find as well. It would explain why the people sent to negotiate with them didn’t come home. They were probably added to the menu.” He said in disgust.

“There’s got to be a reason they are so far from their home in such slow and small ships. Its like you said, they can’t go home, so they have to hunt to live, I wonder if they would be open to buying food, like cahoonas, instead of trying to hurt people. It would sure make things a lot easier to understand if food was the big deal.” Julian said and Ben nodded.

“I might give it a try, if I drop some meatsteaks and they use them, maybe I can get a message to them we will deal with them for food. It’s worth a shot.” Ben said and the link went dead. Julian was hoping beyond hope that it worked, they were really getting used to all this nice peaceful life, and a new war wasn’t in the cards for anyone.

A week went by and Ben called again, he had tried the idea Julian had and one ship did pick up a few cahoonas, but others went right by and didn’t even look. He was completely confused, it didn’t make much sense, but then these new people had everyone confused from the beginning. Why did one ship pick up just a few, leave others and then no one else even bothered to look, he decided he needed to learn more about reptiles in general, maybe there was something he had overlooked. He thanked Julian for the idea saying he would try again later, but he was wondering why the first ship stopped and others didn’t. He would let Julian know if he found out anything else, so keep the faith. He closed the link and Julian was upset, if Ben couldn’t figure these new creatures out, then what chance did anyone else have?
Julia and Kris had been doing really well; they were making the best money both had ever made and they talked daily about their new company and the men they loved. As a pair of working girls, it helped the day go faster to talk, but they were careful not to mention anything to embarrass their men if the word got out. As Julia said,

“We might be very happy, but I don’t WANT to know what makes my brother so happy too.” She said as Kris laughed out loud and said, no worries she’d keep the best parts to herself.

Julia said she was watching for a nice place for her and Craig when Kris said she knew one. It was in Ringo Moon and the owner had several stations and at least one of them was empty. He had offered it to her a few weeks ago but she just couldn’t afford it, especially since she had other plans. Julia asked which one it was and they decided to make a quick trip to see if it was still empty or not.

They arrived in Ringo Moon from the north gate and went straight to the center. The owner answered the link and said that someone was looking at the place but no money had changed hands yet. Julia said she was interested, if he didn’t mind she wanted to see it, and he agreed. They walked through the place and she was impressed, it was the apartment usually made for station owners and it was big. She liked the layout and she mentioned her parents lived right next door. When he heard who her parents were he was ready to make a deal on the spot. Julia asked the price and was very surprised, whether it was because he knew her dad or whether he was very generous the price was well within their reach and she said she’d have to get hold of her boyfriend and see, she promised that they’d hurry back and he said for her he’d hold it an extra day or so. She was thrilled and she couldn’t wait to tell Craig about it.

As soon as they left she called and left a message for Craig, he was out on patrol, and she probably had a better chance to see him than waiting on him to return her call. She thanked Kris for mentioning it and she said she owed her a few favors so this was just one of them. They laughed and returned to work and Julia was a nervous wreck the rest of the day waiting on Craig to call.

It was evening when he finally did, and she told him quickly about the new place. He was very surprised and even though it was pretty close to her parents the price was right. They signed the papers that evening and decided that the girls could start moving things in the next day. Kris was happy to help and said now they both had a good place and they didn’t have to worry about it any longer. Julia said yes, now they could concentrate on getting their new business up to top speed and Kris just smiled and nodded.

They made a couple trips before Saya noticed they were in the sector, and she called at once to say hi. It was a surprise to hear that Craig and Julia were going to be right next door, but she rushed over with coffee and sandwiches for lunch and stayed to help set up the place. It was a nice big apartment, and Saya mentioned they would need more furniture sometime; the few pieces Craig owned from his small apartment didn’t look too impressive in here. They all laughed and Julia was pretty sure that some furniture would suddenly appear before too long.

Chapter 14: The Big News

It had been weeks since Julian had heard anything from the front. The Paranid admitted to loosing Spring of Belief, saying that the Dragoon had moved some bigger ships in and set up defenses there. No one knew what they would do next or why they were doing it, but Julian thanked the Maker everyday for keeping them down there.

At noon the next day Julian got another call, he knew Ben would never give up and he was right.

“I’ve got more news, and you’re not going to like it.” He said as a start to their conversation. Julian was surprised, and he was right if Ben said that, he wasn’t going to like it.

“I remodeled a few of my sats and redeployed them to scan differently. Those little computer nodes I saw before are not as little as I thought. Their knowledge of computer technology is amazing.” He said stopping to shake his head.

“I found out after sometime going through the computer files of all the ships I could that they are a warrior race similar to the Split. They started out in three sectors far to the south from known space. They used to war against each other for centuries, but new technology made it impossible to keep going. They were targeting the food supplies, massive corporate farms on planets growing millions of small animals for food. After several centuries, the farms started to fail; the animals that survived started to turn sterile and stopped reproducing. So the families called a truce and started sending out scout ships to look for new forms of food. What they found was a bigger challenge and food at the same time. They don’t seem to eat people, but all the small animals they can find, including rodents, and smaller reptiles. They try to take control over new systems where the planets have vast stores of these small animals and they challenge all comers to take them back. If they have food, and a good fight, they are happier than ever before, They LOVE it here, everywhere they look they see challenges and planets covered with food, they have no intention of ever leaving.” He said sadly.

Julian was not happy. If they were so happy just fighting down there it wouldn’t be long before they would try to spread out. He didn’t want to think about these big slow ships moving into Argon space, but then eventually it might happen. They had been fought to a stop where they were, but what happens when they run short of food again? Will they ever stop expanding? He knew the answer, without a reason, they would never stop; they would continue to war against all comers until someone was dead, and he was sure he wasn’t going to let it be them. He thanked Ben for the report and said to be safe, then he turned to think about what to do next. As an owner of the biggest shipyards around he was in a unique position, and he intended to take advantage of it to help them be ready.

Julian called Commander Harris and waited so talk to him. It took a few minutes but he got through to a smiling commander who seemed happy to hear from him.

“Julian, good to see you, how’s business?” he asked politely.

“Very good, as a matter of fact with the deals about the new Dragoon armor going on and the new Fast Freighter, I’ve decided to be generous.”
He said smiling, and Commander Harris was all smiles, either way this couldn’t be bad.

“I understand that the Dragoon ships are slow but heavily armored, and many of our best ships, like the Corvette class, need the new armor to help them stay in the fight. I’m ready to offer you free armor around “critical” areas, like engines and crew compartments, so they can stay in battle longer. It won’t be a complete rearmor, but just a few carefully added plates to give them better protection.” Julian said in closing.

Commander Harris was thrilled, this was the first time in years an Argon businessman had offered free support for the troops, and he wasn’t going to turn it down. He said they had several corvette class ships ready to send to the front to assist the Paranid, they had cruisers there, but argon was holding back its bigger ships until they saw if they were needed. Julian nodded and an agreement was reached to rearmor a few more big ships at a good profit and get the new “critical” armor for a few more for free. Both men nodded and the deal was done. Julian got another contract and the profit would be enough to pay for the refit of the corvettes, he was helping the best he could, without costing him a lot. It was a win/win for all.

“Are you starting that again?” he heard as he closed the link. Saya was standing there with a wicked grin.

“Starting what,” Julian asked being as dense as possible.

“Free help for Argon ships while there’s a war on, it’s not even our war yet, but your offering free armor to corvettes?” she asked smiling slyly.

“Just a few critical areas to protect the crew, and I got a new contract from him that will more than pay for it.” Julian explained with a wide grin.

“I’m not against helping the military, but be careful you don’t get carried away like last time.” She said shaking her finger at him ‘til he pulled her down and kissed her.

“I’ll leave the ship capturing to the young, I have a lot more to live for than I used to.” he said and she just chuckled and kissed him back.
Julia and Kris were busy delivering ore to a factory when she yelled,

“Did you see that?” she asked as Kris asks what.

“Right past the station out in dead space it looked like a big blue flash, really bright for a second.” She said and Kris said she missed it.

“I wonder if some miner didn’t hit an asteroid or something, we better finish this load and go see.” Julia said as Kris speeded up and they docked

They were done in a flash and running towards the bright spot Julia had seen.
“It was to the right of the asteroid field, maybe over this way she said and they flew on, but for a while didn’t see anything, then far out past all the asteroids she just saw a glint of light.
“I think I see something, follow me, she called and they ran full out in that direction.
“We’re getting really far out here,” Kris said worrying, and in a minute she thought her worries were founded. They were slowly gaining on what appeared to be a ship, it was gold colored and seemed fairly large. She called that she was worried about this, but Julia said it was ok, just follow her and on she flew.

The ship was unlike anything she had ever seen; it was a pretty gold color and was pretty big, maybe a cruiser class vessel. It was barely moving, and it seemed to be more drifting than anything else.
“Isn’t that a Dragoon ship,” Kris asked and they stopped dead. It might be, Julia thought and they were a long ways out with no help. She took a big deep breath and told Kris to stay back, she had better shields, and she wanted a better look.
“Your nut is what you are.” Kris said seriously as Julia sped ahead.
She got to within 3k and started slowly sneaking forward, she had heard they had heavy cannons, but cannons didn’t have a really long range and she was sure if it fired on her she could escape. She finally closed to within 1.5 km and the ship didn’t even notice she was thrilled; she started to circle it and found a huge hole in the side facing away from them. It was big enough to fly her ship through, like she was that crazy, she thought, but it was definitely drifting, the hole was blown from the inside out, it had to have been done on purpose she decided. She had heard from her dad they had self destruct devices on board but why do it here?
She called back to Kris and said it was ok, the ship was destroyed, come see and she flew in very carefully until they were sitting together looking at it.
“Wow, that’s a hole, why would they do that?” she asked and Julia said she had no idea, they had scuttled the ship and killed all on board for some reason, maybe a bad disease, or maybe…it struck her they were in dead space and without a return vector they would have no idea where they were. They may have been very sick or very hungry, and they killed themselves instead of starving to death. At least it sounded possible, she said and Kris agreed.
“Well we got it, now what do we do with it?” she asked chuckling.
“We make some real money, that’s what.” Julia said and called her father.

“Yes, hi Julia how are you, what can I do for you today?” he asked with a huge grin.
“Got any drones for the C repair ship?” she asked and he laughed, he always had a full set just to play with, then it struck him.
“You ok, are you hurt, what happened,” he asked in rapid succession, she laughed and said she and Kris had found a big ship in deep space and she wanted to claim it. He was clearly relieved to hear that and asked where they were. She said she’d send Kris to meet him, and bring grandfather with him, he’d want to see this, she said and he agreed.

Julia asked Kris to fly back to Bala Gi’s Joy and meet them and bring them here, she agreed and started back while Julia scanned for life signs, she was right it was a dead ship and in an hour she heard her father on the coms.

“Ok, we’re jumping in now where is this old ship?” he asked,

“Kris is there to meet you she’ll bring you here just follow her.” Julia said and she wondered what her dad would say when he got here, this had got to be worth a fortune. He followed Kris for a while before seeing the ship in the distance; he was beginning to wonder what the devil two girls were doing way out here alone. Of course one was Julia and that pretty much explained it. He was slowly getting a better look as he approached when it suddenly struck him. It was a dragoon Cruiser and his insane daughter was sitting right next to it.

“Julia would you get the hell out of there, this is an enemy ship and you’ll get yourself killed!” he yelled as she started to laugh.

“Dead people kill no one and the weapons systems off line, come over here and see this side.” She said laughing and Julian and Kyle just shook their heads, Kyle looked at his son smiling and said,
“That’s your daughter, no doubt about it.” Laughing, as Julian just gave him a dirty look and maneuvered the ship to see the other side. It was plain what he saw was a self destruct gone bad, they tried to destroy the ship but one or more explosive devices didn’t blow, but it certainly did enough to eliminate the crew, he thought.

“And this salvage is mine and Kris,” Julia said, and Julian just laughed.

“If we can do it, ok, I’ve never done something like this, it’ll take a while.” He said and Julia said its ok, with what they’d get for this ship in Argon Prime they’d take the rest of the day off. Julian and Kyle laughed, damn right they could take a day off this was a new enemy design, and it would be worth its weight in gold, or silicon at least. He started the scan and had to reset it twice for calibration. It didn’t want to work but after some coaxing it did.
“It has 75% electrical damage and 40% hull damage, so maybe we can get it to run at least.” Julian said and Julia cheered, all she wanted was to get it back and get a big fat paycheck. Kyle laughed, she was planning on being wealthy by the end of the day, and she wasn’t too far off. Even the argon military would give her millions for this for their research, if her dad didn’t buy it for his own shipyard. He thought smiling.
Julian started the repairs and waited to see if it worked, slowly the drones started getting things right. At one time he got a message saying a destruct device was found but he had it disabled and heaved a big sigh of relief. It looked like he could do it, but he was wondering what they would do with it, she had said that it was up for sale but he wondered what she actually thought she wanted for it, after all, it was a totally new design and he did own the shipyard, he thought smiling.

“Ok, I’m not sure but I think we can do it,” he said as Kris and Julia cheered.
“How much are you girls asking for this…piece of junk?” he asked smiling to himself.

“Don’t you even start that big businessman thing with me,” Julia said laughing, and the discussion had begun.
“Its worth millions, I remember you telling me about bringing in TL’s and Titans and getting like 12 million for them,” she said with a definite hint. Her dad shook his head and smiled, she had a good memory, he thought, and Kyle was chuckling to himself the whole time, father against daughter in a war of credits, he said laughing. Julian chuckled himself as the repairs continued and she spoke again.

“Since it’s in the family I guess Kris and I could settle for, oh, maybe 10 million credits.” She said as Kris cheered loudly.

“You are a true Brennen,” Julian said seriously, and with that the deal was made. The girls cheered and hooted, they were rich and they did it on their own, Kris said her parents would be surprised to death and she was going to rub all her money in Kyle’s face, but she was quick to say that she would be nice about it. They all laughed as Kyle looked at Julian with a serious stare.

“What, I didn’t do anything wrong, why the big dirty looks?” he asked.
“She’s your our daughter, shame on you, “he said laughing and Julian shook his head and added another 2 million to the girls immediate glee.
“Any cruiser class vessel should be worth that, always remember,” like it was a big lesson he was teaching, as the girls took off for home. Kyle put his hand on his sons shoulder and laughed,
“It’ll only hurt for a second, “he said, and they both laughed. This was the newest design anyone had seen in recent history and he would be glad to share the design with Argon, but it could be an important addition to the fleet if he was right, and they flew it back to the shipyard as a fleet of onlookers followed.

Chapter 15: New Found Fame

Once at the shipyard Julian had a press conference set up even before they docked. He was quick to say that thanks to the bravery and intelligence of his daughter Julia and her business partner Kris they now had a new ship design from the very enemy they all feared. He called upon the argon military to come see it, and all argon citizens to watch for other signs of explosions anywhere near. He admitted it was probably a deep space probe sent out to find new worlds, but it looked like they had starved to death before they found one. It was even possible they were trying to get to a planet there but just hadn’t made it. He had engineers on board within an hour and the argon military removed the bodies of the crew for analysis, and everyone seemed to get something out of it. Not only did the girls make a lot of money they needed, they were celebrities for a while and they ate it up.

Julia was shopping the next day, with 6 million in her account; she was going to get some nice furniture for the new place.

Craig was very happy for them, and worried for her at the same time. He pleaded for her not to go off running into dead space looking for enemy ships again. He loved her very much and he didn’t want anything to happen to her. She thought that was sweet, but told him they originally went to see a bright flash and thought some poor miner was in trouble. He understood that and decided that things had worked out well considering, but he told her not to waste all her money, it would make a great nest egg for them when they wanted to have children. She agreed and said she laid some back just for future things and gave him a big kiss. They were finally in good financial condition and even though Craig was very old fashioned, he saw that this was the right thing to do.

She found just the right set of furniture and had it delivered, Craig would be surprised when he came home tonight, she thought. The largest chair was very big and comfortable. Her dad had one like it and he sat there almost every evening watching the entertainment channel with her mother. She knew once Craig got down in it he would be hooked, even though he’d probably complain she spent too much. She chuckled, he wasn’t really cheap, he just never had much to go on, and he believed in saving any extra funds they might get. She agreed with that and half of her new found wealth was laid back for the future. Craig decided that was a good thing and left her decided what to do with the rest.

Kris was having the time of her young life, not only had her and Julia sold the big ship, they became celebrities and the news had come home to interview her while Kyle watched on with his big smile. She said that it all started with Julia seeing a bright flash in deep space, and they ran at full speed to see if some poor miner might be hurt. She admitted that it was very far away and she was worried about it, but they continued until the big ship was seen. Then she hung back, ready to run for help, while Julia went in for a closer look. They asked why she held back and she laughed saying a Buster wasn’t made for taking on Cruisers, so Julia went in first because she had bigger shields. They asked what kind of ship she was flying and she got a good plug in for the Brennan shipyards, saying flying one of the new Fast Freighters, Julia seemed to have no fear.

When Julian saw the interview he had another brainstorm, he’d advertise the new Fast Freighter and show it hauling in the Dragoon Cruiser, saying “when the loads get too big for your Buster, haul it with a Fast Freighter” it was brilliant and Saya laughed saying it sounded corny, but he did it anyway. The ad started with a close up of the ship moving along with an attractive young woman flying it,(pretending to be his daughter) and then as the message was played, it pulled back to show this enormous ship being towed in. It hadn’t been done that way, but it was just an ad, he said laughing.

Saya said if he was going to hint it was their daughter doing it he should actually hire her and Kris to do it. She was sure she would, but Julian wasn’t sure he wanted her involved in making ads, it was “sleazy” work to him, but Saya insisted and he made a deal with the girls to do it. They flew together side by side, Buster and Freighter on the ad with close-ups of the girls laughing and saying,” my dad will never believe this story” and then the camera showed the big ship being towed in. It made all the channels and even won an award for advertising, as Julian pointed out to Saya that sometimes corny is good.

She had to admit, that the girls did a great job, and Julian just sniffed loudly and went back to his desk. Saya laughed out loud and decided as he got older, his ego was getting more fragile. She’d have to keep an eye on that, she decided, it wouldn’t do any good to have him get a swelled head, she thought as she walked towards the kitchen to make dinner.

The girls were having the greatest time of their lives, first the ship and their new wealth then being asked to do an ad for the shipyards, and they were well paid for it again. Julia laughed as they talked about it one day saying her dad was all against it until Saya got involved, then he caved in and let them do it. It turned out better than anyone had planned, it was being done for fun for the girls, but the ad council saw it as near prefect casting and they were awarded for their efforts. They each got a check and a certificate to hang on their walls, and they were never as happy as now.

Kyle thought it was great, and even asked his dad to help him make an ad with Kris in it for his factory. Julian was happy to help, but Kris was less than thrilled with the ad he wanted to run, showing her being pursued by pirates as she shot them down with missiles from his factory and getting home in time for dinner. She felt it made her look like a slave to him that she had to be out there while he sat at home, but she did it and the ad looked like a success. It was the last time Kris said she’d do and ad for Kyle even though he begged her to do another one. He was just plain demeaning her, she said and Julian laughed and went home before he got in trouble.

The reconstruction of the big cruiser went well. In a few days the big hole was patched with brand new armour and the fighter bays were up and running. It was made for a flight of fighters or small scout ships for added flexibility, but where they were now was anyone’s guess. The bays were empty but they could easily be used by fighters or even corvette type ships. The scout ships the Dragoon used were nearly as big as a corvette and they made the bays more than big enough to fit them. With good experienced pilots corvettes could use the bays with just a touch of adjustment.

Julian made the big ship his personal project and after a few weeks, they had a perfect blueprint of it for the shipyard. He then sent messages to Argon and all the major houses saying he had the design and sent them some “teaser” pictures of the new ship after repairs. The response was immediate. He had orders enough he decided he needed to add more drones and help to even think of getting them done. He added another yard right next door and used it for the new cruiser with extra large storage areas for construction drones he was cutting construction time by a good amount.

Saya was impressed with him; he was really becoming the businessman she always knew he could be. It would be her job to keep him from becoming as addicted to the job that her mother once was. Only Kyle’s return gave her back a regular life, and she admitted it often. Now that Julian was so involved, he was a madman around the station, going and coming ‘til he was making her start to get angry. She liked having him around and since the kids were on their own, they had many very good days together just enjoying life and each other, but that was weeks ago and she was starting to think it was time for Julian to slow down a little. Sure, they were making more money than ever before, even after buying another shipyard, but they spent nearly no time together anymore and he started even bringing his work to the dinner table, something she put a quick stop to.

She finally made up her mind it was time and changed into something a little more “comfortable” and went into Julian’s office to see him. She knew it was early in the day but she was determined to stop him from becoming another maniac business man with no real life, As she walked in he was busy checking schedules and ordering parts, but when he looked up from his work, she was standing right next to the front of his desk, just outside of the coms screen scan range, Another few steps and she could easily have been seen.

“Oh my, that looks nice, but what are you doing in it now?” he asked with a blank look. She reached around the coms and shut it down, if that wasn’t hint enough, she decided she’d have to get even more serious. She walked around after the screen was dead and sat in his lap and gave him a big kiss, he might be business crazy, but he wasn’t stupid, so maybe a short day was in order after all.

Later on, they were laying in each other’s arms smiling, Julian said,

“We need to do this more often, it’s very nice from time to time.” He said with a chuckle.

“You’re the one who’s being the big business nut, I’m always ready for any suggestions you may have.” She said with a big grin and a hug. It was true, Julian thought, he had been the one ignoring his wife while this new project was running; he must have been a fool. He held her close and kissed her very serious and solidly, she was happy he was here with her, and they stayed there for most of the afternoon.

Chapter 16: Improvements Down The Line

Julian had the first new cruiser in an ad where he handed it over to the Argon Navy. It had been modified to be more like argon ships. It had the enormous armour that the Dragoons were famous for, but also 4 gigs of the best argon shielding possible. The ad said that if you ever think you’re outnumbered and outgunned you need this ship, and many people agreed. He had enough orders to last for years and he did everything he could to speed up production.

His engineers were still busy trying to decipher the contents of the original computer, they were making good progress, and soon maybe they all know why there were no smaller vessels on board. He was confident that any that launched were dead in space, these creatures didn’t carry replicators for making food, either they never used them or never invented them, either way, months of travel time without fresh food was deadly to them. It would only be a matter of time until they found another derelict or scrap from one. They obviously had a strong ethic, if you fail, you die, and it was done regularly. They must reproduce in great numbers, Julian thought, to waste life so freely.

In another week it was done, and to everyone’s surprise they HAD launched the scouts as they travelled. According to their computer records, any time a probe ship sees a planet; it drops a Proto Colony, of 4 creatures to it. If there is ample food and water, then a colony begins, if not then they continue until they find the next one. No one goes back to see, it’s just a do or die thing. They make sure there’s a breathable atmosphere and then they launch, it’s the only prerequisite for dropping someone to their doom, it would seem. Julian sent a copy to Commander Harris who was quick to say that since they fly through dead space and don’t use the gates all the time, then they could be on any one of a number of planets between their home world and Argon Space. He doubted that the scouts were going to be much of a threat even if one or two did find a habitable planet. Dropping 4 people on a new world would take centuries for them to grow into a colony.

Julian agreed, but reminded him that they were talking about reptiles, not humans, they could easily have perhaps 12-50 young, no one really knew, but even with those numbers, it would be many, many years before they were going to even think of leaving their world. Julian could see a very long term plan here, it might take a century, then they launch new ships and do it all again, and they do this on every world they inhabit. Someday they were going to be a very large and powerful race, he decided.

“We’ll send probes out looking for their colonies; if they’re just getting started they may be more likely to be willing to deal.” Commander Harris said, finally and Julian just nodded and the link closed. It took hundreds of years for the Split to become friendly, and they still had tournaments and death matches to this day, too bad they couldn’t get these two together, maybe personal combat would suit them enough to stop warring and live in peace. He decided it might be something he needed to talk to Ben about, after all he had the “ear” of the universe, maybe they could add the Dragoon to that, he thought.

“It’s been a long time,” Ben said with a big smile. Julian asked how he was and if he had been getting out any and he just smiled, he knew Julian worried about him, but he was ok, this was his life’s work, and he was sure it was worth it.
“I had an idea; we just deciphered the computer on a Dragoon cruiser we found floating nearby. The crew was dead, they self destructed, but it didn’t go all the way, so we have a new ship design now.” Julian started to explain.

“The Maker really does watch over you don’t they, do you have any idea the odds of finding that ship?” Ben asked smiling and shaking his head.

“My daughter Julia found it with her business partner, so they called me to repair it, and I bought it from them, now I have a shipyard set up manufacturing them for us, if the Dragoon ever makes it this far we’ll be ready.” Julian said as Ben just nods.

“So what did you call for, if I had your wife…” Ben started.

“Don’t you worry about my wife, we are very happy.” Julian said laughing.

“I’ll bet,” Ben said and laughed too.

“Anyways, I was wondering, we know that the Dragoon like combat and they don’t seem to care about losing a few people doing it, but why can’t we set them up to be friends with the Split. They’re like that too, with the death matches and personal combat tournaments, so if we are friends with them and the Dragoons become their friends…” Julian stopped for a second for Ben to think.

“It might help, at least but remember it might also help make the Split more arrogant than they already are but that I think we can work with. It’s not a bad idea actually. If they can sit and cheer for their favourite champion and see lots of blood, they might just decide that it’s enough, I’ll get back to you.” Ben says smiling, he never fails to be amazed at how much Julian learns as he goes along, he thinks and the link goes blank.

“And how, exactly, are you going to do all that?” Julian hears as he looks up to see his lovely wife listening in again.

“Why do you insist on sneaking up on me all the time, it’s very disturbing?” Julian starts, but Saya isn’t buying it.

“I heard you say why not have the Dragoons become friends with the Split so they can go to Split contests and cheer for their champions, maybe it would help end the war, but you don’t have that kind of control over other races, and he doesn’t either, so who IS Ben anyways?” she asks sitting down across from Julian at his desk.

“I can t tell you, he’s my friend, that’s true, he’s a computer whiz and he invented the capture software that made all this…” he says waving his hands around,” possible, isn’t that enough to know?” he asks seriously, but Saya has heard too much this time and she isn’t stopping without an explanation

“Obviously not, if he has some kind of super control over people what makes you think he doesn’t control you?” she asks very seriously.

“Ben doesn’t control people; not really, he’s an info broker, like I said, and what he does help people make decisions about what THEY do.” Julian says thinking as fast as possible.

“So Ben gives out information he wants people to know so they can make the kind of decision he wants them to make, isn’t that illegal?” she asks, trying to understand.

“Not at all, if they come to him for info and he gives them some, they feel he’s done his best, and wither it’s a pirate asking what he thinks the argon authorities will do or a businessman asking what he heard about a new kind of armor, it all makes a difference somewhere, and Ben loves Argon as much as we do, and he would never do anything to hurt us.” Julian says, hoping that will be enough.

Saya sits back to think and Julian can see the wheels screaming in her head, she’s very intelligent, and he has to be very careful or she’ll catch him yet.

“It still sounds illegal,” she says finally, “Do you think he can really make any difference?” she asks seriously.

“He started getting his business going many years ago, and he gives only peaceful advice to anyone, so did you see any difference in the last 20 years that might say he did?” Julian says smiling, but he just realized what he has said.

“Ben helped set up all the peace treaties we have now? You’ve got to be kidding; he’d have to be a genius to keep that going.” She says sliding forward in her seat. Julian sits back he had no intention of saying that, but he did, now he’s sooo screwed, and Ben will probably never talk to him again, he decides.

“Julian, are you ok?” she asks as clearly he looks like he’s about to have a heart attack.

“You can NEVER repeat that, please, I love you very much don’t do this to me, we’ve come so far since the beginning, and we live so much better now, so please promise me.” He begs as Saya sits back with a thump.

“So its true, you and Ben try to control the galaxy, how can you possibly sit there and say that, we all have rights to say and do…” she starts.

“We don’t control people, they can do what they want, we don’t control anyone, but all the governments of the galaxy have spy sats and scanners and they do whatever they say is real, so we told them ages ago, that everyone wanted peace, and we got it. If that’s wrong then I’m as wrong as he is for keeping quiet all these years, and we would have lost Argon back when Ban was in charge and the fleet was destroyed.” He says seriously, she stops to consider, those were desperate times for sure, she can see where a plan like this could have started, but that was then. Things are much better for everyone now, and all this control isn’t needed any more, at least she doesn’t think it is, she’ll have to have some time to consider.
“We’ll see,” she says as she walks away. Julian is in shock, after all these years, he has left Ben down even after all the good they did together, but he has to admit he did it, and give Ben a reason to know what will probably happen next. He opens another link, just as Ben turns to ask what Julian cuts him off.

“Saya knows,” he says and Ben just shakes his head and smiles,

“You think I didn’t plan for that, she’s very beautiful, and your only human, so I think you’ve done very well all these years.” Ben says smiling. Julian is floored he isn’t even in trouble, he was expected to let it slip a long time ago, that’s why he was never left know the location he worked from.

“I want you to talk to her, she doesn’t understand and she thinks we are trying to control every person in the galaxy, please?” he asks, and Ben just smiles and nods. Julian calls for Saya who walks in slowly, asking what. He waves for her to come over and she isn’t too surprised to see Ben on the screen.

“Hello, Saya, I understand you have questions.” He says and indeed she had. They talked for a while and she wound up sitting on Julian’s lap to see the screen better, and the talk went on. She was impressed that Ben was every bit as intelligent as she knew he’d have to be, but it took quite a while before she was convinced he was sincere. He told her not to worry, the experiment was nearly over, and he thought that peace had been around long enough that the houses wouldn’t want war anymore. It was his life’s work, bring peace to the galaxy, or at least their little corner of it, and she just smiled and nodded as the screen went blank.

“He’s really quite remarkable.” She admitted as she turns and kisses her husband and hugs him.

“I hope he’s right, when he stops this experiment we may have a real change coming.” She says and walks away. Julian isn’t sure Ben is planning on ending the experiment so soon, but if Saya is happy with that, then he will be too.

Chapter 17: Small Changes

A few weeks went by with nothing special happening, and then a news flash was seen. A Dragoon emissary asked to talk to the news about their plans; they got it of course and an invitation to one of the stations in Friars Retreat. He came in a small scout ship and was escorted everywhere by an armed escort. He seemed fairly impressed with it all and the news teams were ready for a big announcement.

“We, the people of the planet Drago have come here looking for food and a fresh start. We have found several worlds that have vast amounts of small animals that we seek for food. We have heard that you think we seek you as food, we do not, and we seek only the small and worthless. You are our biggest challenge, and so we respect you, but we have heard there is one among you that are like we… a warrior race who seeks challenge. We ask for a fight to be arranged, between our champion and the champion of the Split. We will stop hostilities until after this is done to see what your people are truly made of. It is possible that combat of a more personal nature is better than ship warfare we will see.” He walked away to the astonishment of everyone there and the Split families started organizing the biggest combat match ever in Split space.

The time came and everyone was waiting to hear the results. Wagerers from all the houses were making huge wagers that the Dragoon would kill the split before the second round. Their looks alone were frightening enough for that comparison.

The fight started out with hand to hand, empty hand as it were, and the split dove on his enemy with a ferocity that was amazing to see. The Dragoon was surprised to see such brutality here, but he was thrilled by it. He had one eye nearly closed by a huge two handed blow but roared in response and picked up the amazed split and threw him across the arena. The battle raged with each gaining and losing from one point to another. Soon the first round bell rung and they stopped to refresh themselves with a drink and then gather weapons for round two.

They each came out with very devastating knives, the Dragoon blade was very thick and heavy just to see, the split blade was long and double edged. It was going to be a quick end to someone for sure, but it didn’t happen. The Dragoon hit first, driving the blade into the arm of the split to the bone, throwing blood gushing everywhere. The split immediately retaliated and made a huge gash across the dragoons left leg, almost dropping him to the floor.

On and on they went blood running and great roars being heard all over the building as each did their best to end it. After over an hour the two battle contestants were exhausted, and took turns it seemed falling and getting up. If one fell the other stepped back as the crowd called for a quick end, but neither did it, they waited on each other and soon they both collapsed in a pile so close they could touch each other, and in a last act of respect, they reached out and grasp their opponents hand and the split was heard to yell, “my brother” and they passed out from lack of blood.

The medics were quick to get to them each to their own and even though it was written into the rules one must die, the contest was called a draw. Never had a Dragoon been so beaten in face to face combat, and never had a split champion called his worthy opponent his brother in front of the whole stadium. It was on the news for weeks, and the Dragoon did not restart the fighting. They had seen the ultimate challenge and they started training their new champion for it. The split invited them back at any time, and the Dragoons said they would build a stadium on the world they now controlled closest to them so they could have full time competition. The war wasn’t exactly over, but the need for ships on the frontier was greatly diminished.

Saya and Julian were sitting watching the news when the announcement came on, it was an astonishing feat, it said and the Split called the Dragoons the most powerful adversaries ever, and in return the Dragoon emissary said they were true champions themselves. Saya sat with her month open to hear such an astonishing remark from the Dragoon. Combat was what they lived for and now they had found it with a new friend. She slowly turned to see Julian smiling widely and he said nothing. She had been a witness to greatness, and it wasn’t either the Split or Dragoon that she had just seen at work. If Ben had this kind of success with each thing he tried she could see why the peace had lasted so long, and she was happy to know that he and his machine were on their side.

“We should invite Ben over some time,” Saya said finally.

“He won’t come, I’ve tried,” Julian said smiling.

“Even I don’t know where he is, and he likes it that way, he’s been alone as far as I know, for 20 years.” Julian said shaking his head.

“Except for you,” she added with a smile, and Julian just nodded. He called from time to time just to make sure Ben was ok, and he appreciate it, but he wasn’t going to trust anyone with his secret, even Julian.

“He’s actually wealthy from all the software stuff he did, and his capture software. I really think he sneaks out from time to time and get some relaxation; he even mentioned that he doesn’t need to be there every minute, so I was happy to hear. Even Ben needs a night out from time to time.” Julian said smiling and Saya chuckled too. Ben was a brilliant man, but he was no Julian Brennan, or anything close, so getting a date might be tough, of course, he was rich, she thought to herself, and sometimes that will do.

“Well, now that we know and I mean ME we will give him a call and wish him well on holidays and a few times in between. If he’s doing all this for us, he deserves nothing less.” She said with a grin and Julian agrees.

Julia had been working round the clock since the new money came in to set up the apartment to make it the best it could be. Craig wasn’t all that thrilled, saying she was spending their “nest egg” on luxuries they didn’t need, but she just laughed and kissed him and said

“Go to work, I’ll handle the family money,” and in the end, he did. They were very happy and except for a little touch of the Argon Flu or something these last few days, she was doing great.

Kris had decided that if she still wanted to run some freight they could, but it was more a chance to get out now than it was to make money. Of course Julia knew it was true, and she wasn’t going to just set around either so they decided after the “newness” worn off they would return to work at least part time. All Julia needed now was to get over this bug and she’d be all set.

After a week the “Bug” didn’t go away and she finally had no choice but to go for tests and get something for it. She was sure she’d be back out there hauling freight and talking to Kris in a few days, but that just wasn’t the Makers plan. She came home from the office in shock, and just sat the rest of the day, thinking where she went wrong. It was like she was being punished for something she didn’t even remember doing. Well, she remembered quiet a few times there….but still she was still in shock when Craig walked in that evening.

“You look terrible, are you ok?” he asked quickly coming to her side.

“I went to the doctors today to get something for the flu,” she started and he nodded, he knew that.

“But it’s not the flu and it’s not going to go away.” She said, dropping her head and starting to weep. Craig was floored, his beautiful wife was hurting worse than he could imagine, and he asked the obvious question,

“How long do we have,” was a question he didn’t even want to ask, he wanted her around for an eternity.

“7 months,” Julia said and started crying on his shoulder, his eyes teared up and he started to cry too…it was too soon, they hadn’t had a life together yet, how could the Maker let this happen?

“I’ll be here for you the whole time, don’t you worry, we’ll get through this the best we can, and I promise I’ll never forget you.” Craig said, looking in her tear filled eyes, as she looked back at him in astonishment.

“Forget me, where are you planning on going?” she asked. Now he was confused wasn’t she, or was she… finally he asked.

“They said your dieing didn’t they?” he asked totally serious,

“DIEING, hell no I’m PREGNANT!” she screamed

It took Craig a minute he sat on the floor and stared, she wasn’t dieing then why this entire hysterics? She was an active person with a business of her own, but this was something to rejoice about it wasn’t the end of the world.

She sat and cried and Craig couldn’t help it, he finally saw what was going on and started to laugh, as she got more upset. He laughed all the harder.

“What’s so damned funny, I’m pregnant didn’t you hear me, our lives will never be the same again!” she screamed as he stopped laughing long enough to pull her close.

“We were planning on having kids anyway, what’s the big deal, you love me and I love you, we’re going to be great parents, just like your mom and dad, just look how well they have done . We can do that, and I dare say their life either together or apart hasn’t ended, they are as happy as we are.” He said as Julia stops to think, of course he’s right, but somehow that’s just now the way it had struck her when she heard it from the doctor.

She was thinking that she could never fly again, and she’d be tied to the station for years to come and…but of course all that wasn’t true, and she did scare the bezany out of her poor husband who thought she found out she was dieing. She smiled after a second, she couldn’t see now why she was so upset, but then, and these things happen, she thought,

“Oh, I have to tell my mom!” she said and jumped up and ran to a link. Craig hid his face and looked away as best he could, she just went from dieing to having their family and her mood changed just as fast, it was going to be a long 7 months, he thought.

Chapter 18: New Life and New Decisions

Julia was now thrilled, she didn’t know who that worrywart was who was crying there a minute ago, but she was happy now. She called and gave her mom the news and she was just as thrilled as Julia was. It was clear now these two were going to be spending a lot more time together from now on, Craig could see, and decided maybe he’d change cloths and make dinner tonight. If she was eating that is, he chuckled and went to get other cloths on and lay out a fresh uniform for tomorrow.

Things changed rapidly after that day. Craig would come home to a funny, happy wife one day and a sick, disgusted person the next. One day they were so happy he could write a book about it, and the next, he was sure she’d leave him. It was a long 7 months to be sure but the day they were in the delivery room together was a day he’ll never forget. He was sure she’d die yet, as she screamed and held his hand, but he had been warned and he learned, she nearly crushed his right hand and he had to pull away. Even as she called him names to make his trainers in the academy blush. It was over in a few hours and they had a beautiful baby girl. He was the proudest man in the world and Julia started seeing just how wonderful their life now was. Kris and Julia’s mother were in the waiting room as Craig walked out and made the announcement, they were moving Julia to her room and everyone could see her there. Saya was thrilled it was over and a new Grandchild was in the family. Craig was on the other hand just glad it was over, but he smiled the smile of a proud father and all the family was there by the time Julia had the new baby in her arms.

Julia knew now that she wanted to be there for her baby. Not just as a mother but as a friend like her mom had done for her, but they weren’t as well off as Saya and Julian had been and she knew that Craig was thinking she would still work a little later on, but she wasn’t so sure. So quietly she made a decision that she thought he’d appreciate, after a while, at least. She called the man who owned the station where they lived and made him an offer, no more rent, she wanted to buy the wheat farm and run it as her business, and she had her mom help her make a good deal. Now she could be there for her family and still add to the family’s income to help Craig out.

She explained it to him one night as they lay talking and he agreed that having a business of any kind would help. So he left it up to her and she made all the decisions. It wasn’t like owning a wheat farm you were going to go broke, food was always in demand, and she knew she could get her money back a dozen times over. She opened a small office and got herself a desk and set it all up with money to spare, and they started their farm on the 30th day of the new baby being home. She could now be there and work at the same time, and Craig was happy a compromise had been worked out.

Kyle was happier than ever too, he and Kris had been together a while and they were very happy. His business was a big success and he still thought about adding on again. He had the money, and he kept thinking a small energy cells factory would run the other two without much trouble. Even though the Dragoon war was winding down, the pirate attacks continued, and he was sure he could make a huge living off of that alone. Not to mention selling to all the Navies in the galaxy and the equipment docks, he had it good, and he knew it.

He had mentioned to Kris about having a baby of their own, but she just wasn’t ready. It was going to be a while, he decided before she got the urge to have one too, but with Julia’s new baby around he felt that the time was coming soon. There’s nothing like having someone else’s baby to see and hold that would make a woman think of having her own, so he just smiled and waited.

Julian and Saya were all smiles, their daughter had her first child, and she was ok. It was an easy delivery, the doctor said, but as Saya said laughing, that’s because he didn’t have to do it. Julian laughed too and remembered Saya having the twins. He thought the whole hospital would know their every little secret before she was done yelling and screaming, but then, they hear it all, as the doctor had said. The important thing was the mother and daughter was ok and healthy. That’s more important than worrying about all the other things, and Craig laughed saying he left her hold his hand, but just for a little while. He

had a hard time getting his fingers to quit hurting the next day, and Julian told him he was lucky. Julia could have broken it if he gave her the chance, and he agreed she could have.

Julia had things set up pretty well by now. She had her Fast Freighter doing deliveries and bringing in E cells, and even though she could definitely use another ship, she decided to wait till she could afford it just from the station profits. It wasn’t going to take long the way things were going either, so she just smiled and waited. She had several contracts that did their own pickups, so that helped, and she didn’t have far to go to get E cells, not to mention a few people who would stop in from time to time to see if she needed any. It wasn’t exactly top production, but it was steady and it really helped a lot.

The new baby also kept her jumping as well as trying to keep up with the station business, if it wasn’t one thing it was another, and she saw for the first time how her mother must have had it back then. Julian was always out dealing and selling ships and Saya was at home a lot with twins. Julia smiled to think of that, even though she was told her dad was forced into more than a few days of baby watching so mom could get some rest. She had always wished she could have remembered that, it must have been hilarious to see her dad with 2 babies trying to be a good dad when mom was just plain exhausted.

Well it was her turn now, and all she could think of was she was really glad this was only one baby, twins would be brutal to keep up with. She smiled a lot even though she was really tired by the end of each day, but Craig was a good father and like her dad did his best when he was home to let her get some rest, and this time, she gets to see the father making a fool out of himself, and she is enjoying it immensely.

While all this was happening, the pirate raids were going strong again. It was nearly back to the “old days” that Julian had mentioned. The flight academies were full up with people wanting to learn to fly well enough to protect themselves. Many people were good pilots, but they had never had to work around pirates for a long time. Some who were successful enough, retired instead, and made room for the young people who saw it as a new challenge. It was on the news every night that some pilot was seen fighting or was seen saving someone else from the pirates. The government started giving out Law Licenses for acts of bravery, and the Legion started complaining that it made things worse, now they had a reason to hunt pirates again. But the Legion held its own, and still demanded that all rebel pirate factions return to them. It didn’t work, as a new group of pirates, mostly young people looking for excitement said they were all that was left of the proud pirate heritage, the old timers had sold out for peace.

Harmony was seen almost every week giving speeches about unity and trying his best to convince these new comers to join the Legion, but it wasn’t happening, and after a while even he admitted that a new era was at hand. The new pirates called themselves “Rogues” and said it proudly. They were the idea of swashbuckling, adventure seeking, youth that said, they were going to set the galaxy on its ear. While the Legion was more of a retirement home for pirates, who just wanted to have it good without fighting. After a few talks it was decided, secretly, that if things didn’t get much worse they would be tolerated and the Legion wouldn’t step in themselves, and in exchange they would always have a place to come to when they were ready. It was the kind of decision that made almost everyone happy, even if it wasn’t Law Enforcement.

Chapter 19: Old Habits Die Hard

Julian got a call at his desk one day and was happy to see his father on the line.

“Hi, dad what’s up, got something important to say or just visiting?” Julian said with a chuckle.

“I have found the most exciting thing,” Kyle started.

“I just came back from a trip to Earth and stopped at a power plant for E cells in Heretics End. I had a man come up to me and ask if I might be interested in a salvage ship. I laughed but said yes for old time’s sake. It turns out it’s a hulk from the Ka’ak invasion the day we opened the gate. It’s been just floating for a while, and its pretty well outside the system , but I think it might be fun for something to do, you know to get out a bit.” He said finally. Julian smiled wide, it did sound like fun, and with Omicron being have themselves now, it wasn’t too far to fly it to a station. He agreed saying he’d finish up what he was doing today and they could go for a “ride “tomorrow and check it out. Kyle was all smiles and closed the link. Julian could plainly see it had been too long since they went out to do something together.

Julian told Saya the plan and she laughed out loud.

“You men are pathetic; you just can’t sit still and smell the roses can you? Ok, if you have to get out for a while, I guess playing salvager for a day or so isn’t so bad, but don’t think you’ll be doing this all the time again, we have businesses to run you know.” She said chuckling as Julian gave her a hug and a kiss and got the old cruiser ready for the trip.

She was just messing with him, he new, there wasn’t nearly as much salvage around as there once was, and it might be the last ship of any size what they’d have a chance at. Kyle had not mentioned what size it was, so Julian made sure he had as many drones as he could find. They were all getting pretty bad by now, but they still worked and he wasn’t even sure they still made them. Maybe he’d ask sometime, when Saya wasn’t looking, he thought with a big smile.

Julian ordered his ship filled with cells and was just hanging up the line when a call came in, it was Ben, and he didn’t look good at all.

“Are you alright, Ben, you look terrible.” Julian asked.

“THAT’S because I’ve been up for two days working, and we need to talk.” He said seriously, Julian could see this was not a good thing.

“I started losing coms with a few of my sats the other day, so, thinking they needed repair I sent for a few to fix. Only one came in, badly shot up. It appears after being hidden for 23 years some of my sats are being targeted.” Ben said in disgust.

Julian sat back to think, it couldn’t be no one but Ben and Julian and now Saya knew…he stopped to look at the screen.

“Are you thinking Saya has told someone, and now you’re in trouble? I assure you she is as secretive as anyone and if she says…” Julian started, but was cut off.

“All I’m saying is if things keep going like this we’ll lose control. There are two important sats I monitor daily that we now don’t have access to, I don’t care how it happened I just need to know how bad its going to get, after all these sats aren’t off the counter you know.” He said loudly and Julian just nodded.

“I’ll check, but I don’t think it was either of us. But…” he said shrugging as Ben closed the link. Julian sat for a second, maybe he needed to do this diplomatically, they hadn’t had a good afternoon together for a while, and if he messed this up, it might be a long time again. He thought with a smile as he closed his desk and walked into Sayas office.

“That was great, you’re full of surprises today.” Saya said with a big grin and a kiss. Julian was all smiles too this was a good day for sure, but he was stalling and he desperately had to ask her something.

“I’m sorry to ask this, but have you mentioned to anyone about Ben?” Julian asked, ready to jump and run at any minute. Saya turned from getting dressed and looked him in the eye.
“I promised I wouldn’t, why, is something wrong?” she asked and Julian told her that Ben said that someone was targeting his sats and destroying his system.

“And you thought I was the problem?” she asked loudly.

“NO absolutely not, but I promised I’d ask, I mean even a small leak could slowly get around…” he said as she was clearly ready to club him any minute.

“My word is GOOD, and I promised him not to advertise this and mom promised too, so you can just…” she was very upset but Julian had heard the slip.

“So, you told your mom about it then?” he asked as she seemed to scream to a halt.

“We were saying that it was a miracle what happened to the Dragoons and Split, it was on all the channels…” she started.

“So you told her it wasn’t a miracle, it was Ben?” he asked again.

“Well, it WAS a miracle just like the peace treaties years ago, and he did those too, what good is it to have all that intellect if no one gives you credit for it?” she asked as she sat down on the bed again.

“I completely understand what you’re saying, but Saya, Ben doesn’t want credit, he wants secrecy. So he can do his work, if his sats all get destroyed he’ll lose all control and the houses will be on their own for real, for many years. Even people like Commander Harris need good info to work with.” Julian said as Saya’s face started getting red, he wasn’t sure if she was getting angry or just embarrassed, but he got up and got dressed. It took her a minute of silence to say she’d ask her mother if she told anyone else. Julian thanked her and gave her a quick kiss before going out to find a snack. They might figure this out yet, he thought.

Saya called her mother right away and after a nice talk she mentioned that Ben was having some serious problems. She asked why and Saya told her that someone was hunting his sats and destroying them. She asked her not to get upset, but please tell her she didn’t say a word to anyone, anyone at all…” Elena got very quiet she was just sitting there with a serious look on her face, and Saya wasn’t sure she liked it, and then finally she said,

“You know I have no secrets from Kyle, and he thought that the idea was wonderful, like Ben was an advisor to all the houses. It was a brilliant plan, he said so himself.” She said a little embarrassed. Saya said she was right it was a brilliant plan, but it looked like it could fall apart at any time, and Ben was frantic to find out how. Elena just nodded and said she was very certain he hadn’t told anyone, he was very happy to hear about it, and he’d never want to see it close till Ben was sure they were ready. Saya thanked her and apologized for having to ask, but Elena just apologized for passing it on, and Julian stood back shaking his head, he could see how things could get out of hand quickly.

Saya turned slowly from the screen and held Julian close.

“Its getting out of hand isn’t it?” she asked as Julian just nodded. Everyone who knew was so happy they told their best friend and them in return… it was a sure sign they all had failed Ben and his experiment was going to close sooner than he wanted.

A couple weeks went by and Ben called again, he looked a little better but he was looking, well, different. He smiled a week smile and thanked Julian for all his help these many years, and apologized to him for questioning Saya about it. Julian didn’t like the sound of this, it sounded so final, so he asked.

“So you found out what happened then?” Julian asked. Ben just nodded.

“It wasn’t anything you did, or your lovely wife, I found remnants of a few sats and examined them. The weapons pattern is very distinctive and rare.” He said looking at the screen with a blank face.

“And,” asked Julian,

“I believe the system is being taken over, rather than being destroyed.” Ben said finally, and Julian was not happy. Someone with that much control without the decency and compassion Ben had shown would surely lead to a catastrophe.

“BY who,” Julian asked if he could help he’d be in a ship in a second and Ben knew it.

“Its nothing you can help with so don’t worry, I’ll handle this myself, I just wanted you to know that I was sorry for blaming you, it really wasn’t your fault, I just seem to have attracted some unwanted attention after all this time. So if we never get a chance to talk again, I want you to know you’re my very best friend and I couldn’t have done this without you. We made 23 years of peace, and that’s good enough for me. I believe my life’s work was done successfully.” He said in summation.

“Ben come here stay with us for a while, if they know who you are they may come for you, please get away while you can.” Julian begged but Ben was just smiling.

“You cant get away from these people no matter where you go, I’d only endanger you and your family, so just wanted to say bye, just in case, and don’t worry, I had plans for this just in case.” He said and the link went dead. Julian dropped his head and sobbed for a minute till Saya walked in. She ran to him and pulled him to her.

“What happened, why are you so upset?” she demanded

“Ben called to say goodbye, he says someone is purposely taking over his system and he thinks their coming for him. He said not to worry, he thought something like this could happen one day.” He said holding her as she ran her fingers through his hair and whispered it would be ok, Ben had planned for it, and he’d be ok. They may never find out where he was but she doubted he would let anyone get him after all these years. Julian just nodded and they knew they’d never hear from Ben again.

Chapter 20: Judgment Day

Ben had made his call and set things in motion. He knew they’d find him eventually, but he also knew they would expect him to try. He had a specially modified ship in the hanger and he loaded it up with all his documents and calculations that had worked so well. “For posterity” he thought and he turned to go just as a beam appeared right between him and the door. In an instant there stood a metallic creature, much like a man but with a smooth metal like skin. It looked at him and smiled warmly and for a second his fears all went away.

“So its time,” he asked after a second. The creature just nodded.

“I was only trying to promote Peace, with enough time it might have worked.” Ben said as the creature smiled even wider.

“It has worked,” it said as Bens eyes bugged out.

“I’ll be ready in a second, all my work…” Ben started as an explosion was heard from the hanger bay. He stopped dead and the creature put out its hand to him. Ben took the metal hand and was whisked away just as the explosion ripped through his old station. He saw it all, from the bridge of the little ship he was now standing on, he hadn’t planned for this he expected to be dead, but he lived on. A voice came from inside his head and asked if he had any regrets, and he thought automatically, “I never took time to have a family or wife, and I saw how wonderful that could be.” He thought obviously out loud.

“Granted, you will have more children than you could possibly imagine.” Came the voice again, as Ben just smiled and the UFO disappeared into space. Maybe his life wasn’t over after all, Ben thought.

There was a small news announcement saying that an old silicon mine had exploded for unknown reasons along the edge of New Income with no survivors. No one noticed the coincidence and few even thought much of it, but the magic hand that guided the universe for 23 years was gone in a flash and the Ancients took the only member to a better place. Where his brilliance and compassion could be enjoyed and embraced forever.

Julian never did know he had flow past the old mine maybe a dozen times while hunting and he didn’t realize that Ben had watched him for years in disbelief. He never figured out how Julian did what he did with a ship, it wasn’t mathematical, and it didn’t seem logical many times either, but he did it constantly and with great results. He had often wandered if the Ancients weren’t involved somehow, but how to find out was the thing, and right up to the day he was taken home, he still never knew.

The universe came to a crashing realization one day that many of the treaties they were working under were either obsolete or had completely run out long ago. There were meetings and rumors and a few agreements were just thrown out for one reason or another, but the universe continued with very little disruption and no new wars for a long time. The new Federal Galactic Union was a big success and even the Legion stayed to reap the rewards of years and years of peace. Their would always be a few dissidents flying around and looking for excitement, but then everyone needed a little excitement from time to time.

The Brennans had a fantastic life story that was told again and again, on Earth as well as on Argon and they continued to be a center of Argon culture for many years. After all, every culture needs their heroes, and Argon was no exception. Kyle and Elena lived in a style reserved for kings or Emperors, and Julian and Saya were as much a part of the social scene as any argon businessman and his beautiful wife. Their children had good lives as well with the loving parents watching over them and loving wives and husbands. Kris finally had her son, and since Saya never had the chance Kris and Kyle named him Alan, after his great-grandmother. They were going to call him Elan, but his father wouldn’t hear of it, saying that his son would need a proper mans name for his future business life. Everyone just laughed and the name stuck, and he grew up to be the image of his father and with the spirit that had run in his family for decades, he was sure to be a success at whatever he decided.

While his cousin, Helena, the daughter of Julia and Craig Gardna was a lot like her dad. She grew up to be a pillar of the Argon military. First being in charge of a patrol like her father did, and then moving up through the ranks to become a Titan Commander, she was always the best of the best and in on every important decision the military had made for years. It was no secret she was being primed for greatness, having waited for many years before marrying and then never having children of her own, she was in line to be the direct descendent of Commander Harris, on the Argon One. It was with great pride that she was waiting her turn at the helm of the Argon Military.

As things sometime go, Alan and his father didn’t see eye to eye on much of anything, least of all business. He was a total disappointment to him and they fought constantly all through his formal education. He was ordered into a business school but he “threw it all away” to be a plain argon pilot instead. Kyle was furious when he found out he transferred without telling him and Kris was very upset that he had made such an important decision alone. After all they were Brennans and there were certain things that were expected of them, but Alan didn’t care He was an Argon first and a Brennan second, and after many loud and belligerent conversations he was literally thrown out by his father. As far as he was concerned, he had no son, and the feeling was mutual as Alan had a friend give him a ride to the trading station. He had a little money and he had just a few weeks to go till graduation, so if he worked hard and did everything as cheap as possible he might just make it, he decided.

The End or a New Beginning?

Chapter 1: Day to Day

Alan was all alone for the first time in his life. All he could think of was, “I’m never going back, even if I starve here.” He was without a doubt as stubborn and prideful as his father, but he saw it as his right to be who he was, rather than whom his father demanded him to be. All the men in his family had become businessmen eventually, as did most average Argons as they grew older, but they had lived a life of their choosing, and by the Maker he would to.

He knew his family would worry about him; they were a close nit group. He loved his grandparents, and his cousin who had set around since he was 10 talking of her adventures with the argon Navy. He was captured by her stories of excitement and danger, it make his heart pump and his mind race to see how he would have done it, and more often than not, he would have been right, or close to it. He decided that he’d wait a day or two and let them know he was ok.

He had seen this coming for a long time, and he was at least partially prepared. While his father and mother were crazy business people and shoppers, he wasn’t. That doesn’t mean they didn’t expect it, so he had a nest egg laid back he knew he’d need eventually. It wasn’t much, but it got him a small one room apartment on the trading station and enough to buy some meals. He had a few weeks of school left to get his pilots license before he would be able to work for himself. He only hoped by then his father had seen the error of his ways, there was no way he could get a ship on his own, or at least, any time soon. He decided to walk the halls in the market place and see if he could find a part time job, it wouldn’t be a lot, but it might help.

Alan found a small shop run by an old man on the second floor of the market. It was a family business and they took pride in it even though most of the work was done by hand. They saw automation as something needed by the big stores to keep up. But here things were a little slower, they took the time to talk to each customer and some became friends who dropped by just to talk. It was a much slower pace but it was the friendliest store Alan had ever been in. He managed to get a job there, cleaning up and helping stock shelves, just average labor work, and he was happy it was such a friendly place, it made working there a lot more pleasant. With this little job and the little he had left he knew he’d make it till graduation, then his whole life would be ahead of him, and he could decide then what to do.

The first few days were ok, he went to school and was doing well, even though he had been forced to start in the middle of a semester, when he transferred from Business school, but he loved it he could set for hours on the simulators and fly around argon stations and shoot at satellites and ships. It made him think of what Helena had said about flight training she went through, and he was sure it wasn’t much different. He was quick to answer any questions the teachers had and get more time on the simulators again. His grades were exceptional, and he knew making a living flying wouldn’t be a problem all he needed was that one step all graduates got automatically from their parents, and he was hoping the expression “automatically” was the key. If he didn’t get a ship, his father would look bad to all the other graduates and their families, and god knows, he never wanted to look bad. Alan guessed he was hoping for a little understanding by then, but it was pretty soon and he was just going to have to wait and see.

Alan decided it was time and after work he called his grandparents to say hi, by now they’d have heard about him leaving, or being thrown out, but the story they heard was sure to be about him “storming out” so his father and mother didn’t look bad. It buzzed a few times and finally Saya answered it,

“Alan good to see you, are you alright?” she asked quickly.

“Yes, I’m fine, how’s are you and grandfather doing?” he asked being polite, she just smiled and asked again,

“What happened, I heard you left home a few days ago, are you and your father at it again?” she knew the answer before she asked.

“Yes, he was terribly upset when I switched over from business school to flight school and didn’t tell him. He says I’m no son of his, and that’s ok by me.” Alan stated seriously, Saya just smiled warmly again and shook her head, maybe she did understand, he thought.

“Your grandfather heard about it when your dad called and he’s been worried, are you getting enough to eat, and have a place to stay?” she was getting worried he could tell.

“I’m fine for the moment anyways, I got a part time job and it helps, I’m just hoping dad will admit he can’t win this one in time for my graduation.” Saya knew exactly what he meant, without support from his father the new license would be all but worthless, without a ship he’d have no way to use it.

“Well, keep in touch, we’ll be hoping your ok, and if you need anything don’t you dare hesitate, its hard alone and we all know it, even if your father never had to find out.” She said as he just nodded and closed the link.

He called home next to say hi and let them know he was ok, with a little help maybe his dad had a chance to think a little more by now, he hoped. The link buzzed again and Kyle got it.

“It’s about damn time you called, are you in any trouble? I warn you, I’ll not be paying fines for a worthless pirate so be ready to fend for yourself.” He demanded, obviously he hadn’t cooled down a bit, Alan decided.

“I am not, and never will be a pirate, and I’m in no trouble either, I just thought one of us should be adult enough to let things go, and let you know I’m ok, I’ll be graduating in a couple weeks and I expect you to at least have the courtesy to be there.” He said getting a little louder as he spoke. It wasn’t planned, it just always happened when they talked.

“Of course and bring big presents so you can remind me for the rest of my life how you beat me at my own game, is that it, well it’ll be a cold day when that happens!” he said loudly. Alan shook his head, he thought it was too much to ask, but it was worth a try.

“Then I’ll do it without you, just like every argon has, and don’t expect me to cover for you when all my classmates ask where my graduation present is either, I have friends here, and your going to look worse than ever before when this is over.” He stated the obvious but he didn’t think Kyle cared, and he shut the link.

Without his fathers help he was doomed to many months of physical labor just to keep a roof over his head, and some meals on the table, but he’d survive, and he’d keep one eye out for any more he could do to make a little extra, he was going to do this if it killed his father, he thought with a grin.

Chapter 2: Graduation Fast Approaches

For the next few weeks Alan did his regular routine, he went to school, came home grabbed a bite and went to work. He was paying his rent and getting one good, hot meal a day and a little snack to tide him over. The work had him actually hurting in his arms and back for a few days, but he got used to it, and soon he found moving heavy boxes and sweeping for hours didn’t bother him anymore.

Mr. Sampson the store owner, asked him from time to time about his family, but Alan lied, saying his parents were dead and he was going to school to become a pilot. Of course he didn’t really believe it, he had seen family squabbles before, but none that lasted this long, and he liked Alan, he worked hard, not like some of the worthless kids who ask him to work here, they stole things and stood around a lot talking to their friends, that was something he had never seen with Alan. He didn’t seem to have a single friend who recognized him here, and it bothered Mr. Sampson to see it. He was a smart boy and a good worker, he just guessed Alan didn’t want anyone to know where he was working, but that was ok.

Julian and Saya talked about Alan’s problem almost daily, they knew time was running out and that Kyle was being a fool, but it was his son and even as grandparents there were certain limits that were accepted. Finally Julian could stand it no longer and called Kyle. He answered immediately with his big patented smile, but this conversation was going to fix that.

“Graduation is a week away,” Julian started and paused to let it sink in.
“So, I told him I was against him going to flight school, but he insisted, so let him fend for himself. Its hard out there and he’ll come crawling back soon enough.” Kyle said seriously, but Julian couldn’t believe this was his son.

“He called a week ago and said he was ok, and we were very happy to hear it. Bad things happen everyday on these old stations, and before the two of you idiots finally grow up he may not be able to return.” Julian said loudly, as Kyle’s eyes dropped to think, he didn’t consider something might happen to him, but then it was still HIS fault, he decided.

“If it does, it does.” Kyle said not as loudly or as sure of himself this time.

“There’s something I think you should consider here, He’s the only male child in our family, and if something happens to him it all ends here. The Brennans after fights with Xenon, Dragoons, and pirates will die off because you couldn’t be father enough to help your only son.” Julian said loudly as Kyle’s eyes opened wide, his father had never spoken to him like this, and it just made Kyle think all the harder.

“If things get bad enough he’ll come home.” Kyle repeated not at all loud this time.

“I wouldn’t,” Julian said just as loud as before to Kyle’s immediate dismay,” and when it comes to seeing how hard it is “out there” how the bezany do YOU know? We gave you everything to protect you, right up to and including your first station, you know nothing of how hard it can be, but Alan is learning right now, he has to work after school for money for FOOD, I hope you’re really enjoying this little fit you’re having, and I hope someday he’ll forgive you.” He said after which even Kyle had nothing to say.

“I’ll be there for his graduation,” Julian said proudly, “and I expect to see you there too.” And the link went closed. Kyle sat back with a thud, he hadn’t planned on Alan getting hurt, or doing without food, he just wanted him to admit he was wrong, but maybe he needed to give just a little to see what happens. He marked the calendar on his desk and called to see when graduation was. He wasn’t going to be happy about it but since his father was so upset, maybe he’d at least show up.

Alan was working that evening in the back of the store when a commotion caught his attention. Three kids came in all drunk up or high and demanded money from Mr. Sampson, Alan knew he wouldn’t give it to them and there was security button under the counter if he had time to get to it, but they were pressing him hard and Alan decided he had no choice. He took the handle out of the broom he was using; now it was just a 5 foot piece of light metal rod. He walked forward and as the first kid whipped around Alan dropped him to his knees with a quick jab in the stomach and then hit him over the head with it, driving him into the floor. He laid there throwing up as Alan moved on. The second kid had a bottle he pulled off a shelf and he came after him with it, a bad idea for someone with a 5 foot metal rod, the bottle spun out of his hands and hit the floor about the same time the second kid did. The third was a little smarter, he jumped the counter with Alan right behind him and pulled a small knife and walked towards Mr. Sampson, and he had backed away as far as he could and had his back against the store window. The youth pulled back with the knife to get a little revenge before this “hero” got to him but it was too late his arm never dropped with the blade in it, it was snapped around and the shoulder cracked loudly as it dislocated and the knife went flying. Alan grabbed him by the back of the pants and threw him over the counter.

“No customers allowed behind the counter,” he said loudly and the three laid there in various crumbled and sick masses till the security team rushed in.

Mr. Sampson was thrilled to have the help and when a camera crew rushed in from the restaurant across the hall he stood with his arm around Alan and said that without his help he might have died. It was on all the news as they asked Alan why he was in the store and he said he had a part time job there just helping out. He was given a nice credit check from the local police for assisting them in their work and a law license as a reward. He hadn’t planned any of this but he was sure this would come in handy later on.

The news crew asked his name and he just said Alan, so they pressed him a little more and for a minute he said nothing, then he smiled and said Gardna, they took that as good enough and they went to show the footage on the evening news. Alan knew he might have to quit working here now, after all this whole family would see that report, but he only had a few days left and he decided that it was ok.

After the news crews left Alan helped pick up after the fight, and Mr. Sampson was very impressed by him and said so, he gave Alan an extra weeks pay for helping and said he’d always have a job here when he needed one, and Alan smiled and thanked him. No matter how bad things could get, he had a friend and a job so he’d always be able to eat, at least. He thought and went home.

That evening, the news was on and Julian was in his favorite chair when the report was played. His eyes popped out and Saya gave a quick cheer when Alan’s picture was shown. They said he single handedly over powered three kids and saved the store owner, and he was given a reward and a law license from the local authorities. “That’ll help” Julian thought as he sat smiling. The news crews asked for his name and Alan stumbled a little before saying Gardna, and Saya burst out laughing and Julian just shook his head and chuckled.

“The best name to use if you’re hiding out.” Julian said after and they both got a good laugh. Julian was sure right now Kyle was a little more sorry about his behavior, after all having a hero for a son wouldn’t hurt business, even if he was being disowned at home, Julian smiled.

Chapter 3: The Moment of Truth

The day had finally arrived and Julian was sitting right up front with Saya as their grandson got his diploma. It had been hard for him, without help from his father, but Julian was at least glad he had showed up today. He wasn’t sitting right up front, but he was here, so it meant something to Alan he was sure.

As Alan waited to have his name called the school president was giving the usual speeches, but he paused for a second to say that at least one graduating member was already an accepted member of the argon law enforcement and the class cheered. Alan just nodded and the ceremony continued. He turned to see his grandmother waving and his grandfather seated right up front. It made him feel good they had come, and to his immediate surprise his father was here after all. He was quietly seated in the back, but at least he was here.

Many of Alan’s friends recognized his grandfather and said that he was sure to get something nice for graduation, and Alan just smiled. He knew that Julian was an old fashioned type of guy and he would get a gift from him, but the ceremonial first ship always had to come from the father and mother. It was the final way of saying goodbye and good luck and he wasn’t sure even now that his father was ready to do that. His turn came and he walked up and was awarded his diploma, he smiled and waved to everyone as his grandfather and grandmother applauded for him. Not to his surprise his father just sat there but with a tiny smile showing, it was a start, Alan decided.

As all of his friends went forward they got a good round of applause and they all waved for various cameras and vids around. He was sure that this was going to turn out well. He knew that his father was only here because someone, probably Julian had forced him to, but he was still the father, and just being here said volumes. Alan didn’t want to get his hopes up too high, anything would be better than nothing, but he kept waiting till the end of the ceremony for those family hugs and presents. He was sure he wouldn’t be disappointed but then, only a few more minutes and he’d know.

The ceremony was finally over and everyone shook the hands of their friends and got a few hugs, Alan was really surprised to get a good hug from a very attractive redhead in his class. He hadn’t took time to think about dating, he was too busy but now he was wandering what she had in mind, but that could wait, he had more important things to take care of first.

He took off his robes and laid them neatly on a chair in the dressing room, they’d come get these later so he took his diploma and went out to see his family. His grandfather was there first, shaking his hand and giving him and hug and pat on the back. His grandmother was teary but she gave him a hug too and stepped away so he as his father could talk.

“Well, you did it,” Kyle started trying not to act surprised,

“I said I would and my words good, I’m a Brennan,” Alan said as his father smiled for the first time.
“I never approved and you know that, so I came just as your father and do give you this.” He said and handed Alan an envelope. Alan smiled and thanked him, he opened it right there and in it was… a credit chip, nothing else. Alan was surprised; in this place on this day, this was not just unexpected it was an insult. He looked at his father with teary eyes and Kyle saw how badly he had hurt him, and Alan walked quietly away to join his friends, and look for a ride back to the station.

Julian was furious, he hadn’t for a second thought Kyle was capable of such cruelty, he grabbed him by the arm and dragged him away from the crowd to talk.

“A credit chip, that’s all!” What the bezany were you thinking?” he said loudly enough a few others walked a little further away.

“I never approved of this and he knows it, besides with what he got from the law enforcement and this he can probably buy a new ship. I just couldn’t give in all the way, I’m his father and he needs to respect me when I make a decision.” He said smugly, as Julian held back very seriously from punching him right there.

“And now your only son is walking around on his graduation day, begging for a ride home because of you. It’s the most embarrassing thing you could ever do to him, and I don’t think he’ll ever be able to forgive you, I know I might not.” He said and walked away, he had to go find his grandson and see to it he at least got a good hot meal and some family time, and yes, he had a credit chip for him too, but it wasn’t what Alan had hoped after all the hard times, and Julian couldn’t believe his own son had been so cruel.

Alan gladly accepted the ride and Julian and Saya took him to their place for a graduation dinner. He was a lot happier now that he was away from all his friends, and they talked and asked him what he would do now. Julian mentioned he probably had enough for a new light fighter, and Alan just nodded, he wanted more than anything for his dad to give in just this once and he hadn’t. He did respect him for holding to a decision, but in this case it went well beyond just believing he was right, he was being completely unreasonable.

They sat and ate a good meal and Saya was sure Alan hadn’t had a home made meal in quite a while. He ate well and they talked some more. Finally Julian took him to the side to talk, he wasn’t going to do this, and he said it just wasn’t his place, but Kyle was being an idiot and he’d never forget it.

“Let’s go for a walk,” he said to Alan and they took a turbo vator to the docks. It was dark but the light came on automatically when the turbo stopped, and there just in the first bay sat a large black ship that looked like it had been polished nearly to death. Alan’s eyes popped, he had never seen one up close, it was an old model xenon P corvette, and they walked over to look at it.

“It’s beautiful,” Alan said as he walked around inside it for a minute. It was bigger than his apartment and he was impressed.
“I’ve had this ship and a few others I collected over the years just to play with,” Julian said, ”this is my baby, I used one like it for many years when I was still capturing xenon ships.” He said and Alan remembered the tales.

“You’re not planning on giving me THIS?” Alan asked with a big grin.

“THIS,” Julian asked loudly,” not in this lifetime.” They both laughed as Julian continued.

“This can give you an idea what a good pilot can do with some time and patience, and yes, its worth a fortune, but I wouldn’t sell it for 100X what its worth.” He said as he sat in the seat smiling. Alan gave him a few minutes privacy with his old “love” then asked.

“So why come down here, just to see this, its great but I don’t think I’ll have a chance at something like it any time soon.” He said as Julian snapped back to attention.

“Sorry, I get lost sometimes sitting here,” he said and Alan smiled widely, he could see his grandfather had a million good memories to relive here.

“However, I did collect several ships including the C class repair ship I owned for many years, this P, and a few others I’ve drug home as Saya called it from time to time.” Julian said laughing as they exited the old ship. They walked around the nose to see another smaller ship sitting there. Just as old, Alan was sure, but it looked very nice. He wandered who his grandfather had polish all these old ships, but let it pass.

“This one was one of the first ships I brought back from a repair mission, I gave it to the station for station defense, and we have never needed it because the sector has a military patrol in it, so here it sits, a nice little ship all repaired brand new and never used. I think it needs taken out and driven a while, it’s not good to leave a good ship just sit for years and years. So I’m giving you this one as a Graduation Present. It’s an antique and someone might offer you good money for it, but that’s up to you. Just be careful, it’s very fast.” Julian said and gave his grandson a hug.

Alan opened the door and went inside, it was active so he called up the computer and read the info it read, ”Teladi Buzzard, 1 – 5meg shield, 2 – bpac-front missile launcher for disrupter missiles.” It had many good tune ups and a good top end, and a few more cargos to be opened if he wished, but it wasn’t a cargo ship, and even if he wanted he couldn’t make much doing that, it was a fighter and with his law license he at least was being given a chance.

He looked forward at his grandfather and whispered “thank you” as he closed the door and started to back out. He turned it and started away, and gave it a quick pump of power, it almost got away from him, and he did a full back flip to gain control. This thing cooks, he thought and turned and started a little slower towards the gate to Argon Prime.

Julian stood watching his grandson getting the ship back online, and then starting out. In a second he was doing back flips and rolls and really trying out the old ship.

“Show off,” Julian thought and with a good laugh went back upstairs.

Chapter 4: A New Life

Saya was waiting as he returned and she noticed Alan wasn’t with him.

“Did you give him the credit chip we discussed?” she asked but Julian just shrugged and said no. She looked at him for a moment and could see right through him, she always could.
“Ok, then what DID you give him?” she asked as Julian sat in his favorite chair and turned on the news.

“Julian…” she stared and went over and sat in his lap and took the remote.

“What did you do, come on, I notice he’s not coming back upstairs with you.” She said with a big smile. He gave her a quick smooch and said it wasn’t anything good.

She started laughing and he couldn’t help but join in.

“You old softy, you gave him a ship, didn’t you, which one?” she asked with a huge grin.

“The old Buzzard, its brand new, no reason to let it just sit there.” He said finally, as she gave him a huge hug and kiss.

“Have I told you lately how much I love you?” she asked quietly.

“No, but it gives us something to discuss this afternoon.” He said as they both chuckle, they haven’t done this in a while.

“You do know Kyle will probably have a fit about this.” She says as they walk towards the bedroom.

“Screw Kyle, he’s being an idiot, and my grandson deserves his chance, whether his father likes it or not.” The discussion ended right there and Julian was sure that he’d be hearing more about this later; he just hoped it was going to be all good.

Alan went back to the station and changed cloths. He had a new ship, well, a new OLD ship but it was as good as he hoped for. Now he could start seeing about making a living and getting on with his new life. He walked back out to the docks to see several young people he went to school with standing around comparing ships and they were very interested in what this “new” ship design was. He walked over with a smile and said it was given to him by his grandfather and he didn’t ask what it was before he got it. It was a medium fighter and was very fast and well armed, they talked and laughed, and for the first time today he felt like he actually belonged. He wasn’t the Brennan his father had asked for but he WAS a Brennan, and his friends all tried to guess what the “new” ship was called. He finally told them it was a “Buzzard” and not a single one recognized the name. It was old, but brand new as well and to them it was some new experimental design from the Brennan shipyards and he was the envy of everyone there.

Alan just stood and talked for a while and one by one they started leaving. He was right behind and he decided to go see about a trading system extension. His grandfather had said they were indispensable when traveling even if you’re not a freighter pilot. He stopped at the equipment dock and got one, and a few wasp missiles for defense. He wasn’t planning on playing it too safe, he had to make a living and escorting freighters or doing police missions would help keep him going. He checked the BBS while he was there and found a guy who wanted to go for a meeting in power plant alpha in The Wall. He said he could get him there in time and a price was set. He was off in a second and the guy seemed moderately impressed by the old ship and his flying abilities. They were there with time to spare and Alan was paid and he looked for something else to do. He had been told that it never hurts to check around gates where pirates have been seen, sometimes you can find salvage there, and it could mean a few thousand credits from time to time. He didn’t see anything he could do here so he decided that was his next job; he left the station and made his way through Presidents End to Elena’s Fortune.

He was in sector for a few minutes when he heard a call saying that someone was in trouble near the north gate. He threw the power to the little ship and was in radar range in a minute or so. What he saw didn’t give him much confidence. There were three Busters attacking a freighter and it was calling for help, and trying to get through the gate. Alan called and told him to keep going; he’d see if he could draw them off for a few minutes.

The captain was thrilled someone had heard him and said he would be glad to pay him to get these guys off him. Alan fired a wasp missile at the nearest ship and ripped the shields from it. It spun around and started towards him but they were not nearly as fast as he was, and he danced around it till it blew up. The second fighter got a missile off at him and as he avoided it the computer told him it was a dragonfly missile. He knew that once it was past, it was gone they were terribly inaccurate. He got a good burst into the buster and it exploded in flames. The last ship swore and dove through the gate to save itself and escaped. Alan pulled in close to the freighter and was thanked repeatedly. They asked him to escort them to the first Boron sector and he agreed. The rate he was getting was very nice and he was determined that the other Buster wouldn’t get this ship when it went through.

They entered the sector of Farnams Legend to see no one in sight. They flew together to the north till the gate was active and he was paid. He watched as the ship went through to safety and then returned to Elena’s Fortune to look around. He had made a few thousand

today and was pretty happy about it, but he also found a crate with 2 dragonfly missiles in it so he knew he could sell those anytime he wanted. It had turned out to be a good day and he took his time flying back to Argon Prime.

Alan made a few friends around the stations where he did work, and his reputation started to pick up with the local haulers. Once he drove a pirate patrol away from an ore freighter just as it was about to dock at a station, and was well paid. Another time he was doing an escort mission when they were jumped by three Harriers. It was tough going, they were even faster than he was, but he managed to save the ship with only miner damage to his craft. He was doing ok, and he called every few days to just say hi to his grandfather and grandmother. They told him the word was out he was doing well and Helena said to tell him she’d watch for him on her patrol. He smiled. It was nice to have people watching for you, and he mentioned that if anyone wanted they could let his dad know he was ok. Alan wasn’t being hardnosed about it, it’s just that every time he called they fought, and he was finally tired of it.

Julian was all smiles after talking to Alan, he was doing ok, and the old ship was serving him well. It wouldn’t be long like this he could afford a brand new ship and then he’d be even better off. But Julian wasn’t sad he gave the little ship away, he was just glad everything was working out. He sat for a second smiling then decided he had something he wanted to do. He opened the coms link and there was Kyle just waiting on a strapping down, it seemed to happen every time they spoke lately, he thought.

“I just talked to Alan; it seems he’s doing alright.” Julian said with a smile. Kyle just nodded.

“He’s getting a good reputation as an escort pilot and he saved a few people from pirate attacks in the last few weeks, so I’m very proud of him, aren’t you?” Julian asked quietly as Kyle sat looking at the screen

“If he’s making a success of himself, then that’s all I ever wanted, no matter what anyone else might have thought.” Kyle said smugly, and Julian just shook his head and smiled.

“Now what did I do wrong, I swear you don’t call without seeing fault in me somewhere.” Kyle said seriously.
Julian thought for a minute and decided what he said has some merit, he was being pretty hard about this, but in the beginning he had good reason, now not so much.

“Ok, I’m sorry that I’ve been harder on you lately, but I had good reason there for a while, so now that things are getting better, I’m sorry.” He said as Kyle nodded and thanked him.

“So he did have enough to buy a ship after all,” Kyle said fishing a little.

“Actually, no he didn’t, but I gave him an old antique ship I had in the hanger to give him a start. It’s not much, but he’s a good pilot, so he’s making due. With some luck he may have enough for something a little better soon.” Julian said with a smile, Kyle didn’t need to know the old ship was new, just that it flew.

“I see, then I thank you for helping this time, I hate to think of my son washing dishes or sweeping floors when he doesn’t have to.” Kyle said seriously.

“ I f you’d given him that first ship you’d know exactly how well he was doing, but now, well he did say for us the let you know he’s ok. So no hard feelings, I guess.” Julian said as Kyle just nodded again and the link went closed.

Kyle sat and thought about what his dad had said he gave Alan his first ship for graduation, something clearly the fathers’ job, but under these conditions Kyle decided he did the right thing. Julian had said he gave him an old antique he had in the docks, and Kyle remembered several old ships that set there for many years. At least now he’s working and safe, he thought and he couldn’t see his father giving him anything too bad to use safely, so that pleased him at least. Alan had always been more of grandfathers son than his, well, the spirit was there at least, Kyle thought, and he wandered how he never had the spirit that his father had, maybe a fluke of nature, but it was way to late to worry about that now, he was just glad Alan was alright even if he didn’t think he could call himself. He did think about them.

Julian sat too and for a minute he worried about starting on Kyle again. He was obviously worried about Alan and he did thank him for giving him his first ship, but he was still just as stubborn as ever and Julian knew it might take quite a long while before he was ready to talk to Alan one on one.

Chapter 5: A Growing Professional

Alan was looking at some new ships at the shipyard one day when one of his friends saw him and walked over. They stood and talked for a while and he said he had nearly lost his ship to a pirate patrol that was being seen more often in Elena’s Fortune. They were more experienced pilots and they were claiming every ship they came across. There was even a rumor that corvette class ships would be coming back soon and it scared him to death. He was thinking of getting out of piloting and going into business a lot sooner than he had expected.

Alan just listened and made a note to keep his eyes open, if a heavier ship was spotted he’d have to stay well away and see what the weapons were like. A corvette class would be really tough with even a good ship like his, it took special training to deal with something like that, but then he did know someone with that kind of experience, he thought. He asked what kind of corvette they were talking about and the kid said it was a new upgraded pirate Marauder. It was supposed to have 3 shields instead of 2 and long range beam weapons, if they really did bring this out, Alan thought he’d very much like to see how tough it really was. He thanked his friend and they went their ways, and Alan decided it was time to call Julian and just say hi.

Julian grabbed the link and was pleased to see Alan there. He asked how he was doing and if he was having any troubles and they small talked for a few minutes till Alan was ready.

“Did you ever fly against pirate Marauder ships?” Alan asked as Julian’s eyes lit up.

“Yes, it’s a good ship, I used to sell a few, and believe me they do a nice job on contracts and even small freight missions. Not too many people want to bother one with a good crew on board.” He concluded.

“So fighting one would be really tough then I guess.” Alan said thinking hard; Julian saw this and decided it was time to ask straight out.

“Have you seen a Marauder so far?” he asked quickly.

“Not personally, but I just talked to a friend who said he heard they might be coming back out, with an extra shield and long range beams. It could make doing escorts pretty hard.” He said and waited as Julian thought.

“Yes, they’re tough but not indestructible, and always remember no matter how big the ship is, it’s the crew a lot of times that gives up, so keep thinking that way, and I’d suggest you stay as far away from them as possible. They used to have Kyon emitters on them with like, 3km range and they were really tough on shields.” Julian said as Alan took it all in. It was obvious he wasn’t ready for one of these just yet, but he’d remember what he was taught and he’d stay away if at all possible. He thanked Julian for the info and closed the link, now I know how Ban felt all those years, Julian thought and started to laugh.

Alan returned to space and started a search for any work nearby. He found a captain who was going all the way to Kingdom End and he wanted an escort. Alan took the job and as they flew along they talked about good ships and how long they had worked. The Boron captain said he recognized the little ship and wandered where he got it from. Alan told him the story and they both laughed. Sometimes families are harder to deal with than enemies, he said as they chuckled their way north.

The job was over a few hours later and Alan had another good day, and not a pirate had been seen which didn’t hurt his feelings any. He decided he had done pretty well so he went home and put on some decent cloths and decided to go to a restaurant for a good meal. There were several on the station and he chose one that wasn’t too far away from his apartment. He walked in and was seated, in a few minutes a young lady came over and took his order smiling.

“Hello, Alan how have you been doing since graduation?” she asked as Alan looked up to see the same redhead who had given him a big hug that first day.

“I’m doing great, but I thought you had a pilot’s license, why are you working here?” he asked as she laughed out loud.

“My family owns this place, and when I’m not out flying they have me here working, no rest for the wicked.” She said with a warm smile, and Alan almost forgot why he was there.
He caught himself and ordered his food, and she winked and said she’d be right back. It was clear she was flirting with him but he still couldn’t remember why he hadn’t seen her before. Of course with all the problems he was having he really didn’t pay much attention there for a while, and as a few friends like to say, he is a Brennan, so you never know.

She brought back his order and asked if she could sit with him for a few minutes, she was ready to take a break, and he said ok. It was very nice having her around and she seemed to enjoy talking to him but when she asked if he had a girlfriend yet he could see trouble coming. He liked this girl and she was very attractive, but he wasn’t looking for anyone really steady yet and he said so, it’s always best to come right out and be honest, he thought and she smiled and nodded saying she really wasn’t either, but maybe they could just see a show sometime and he agreed. She got up and gave him a small peck on the cheek and went back to work. It was nice having her around, very nice even, but he didn’t have a clue about his future yet, and he decided he just wasn’t ready.

He had a good meal and left her a nice tip when he left, but he was sure now that he knew where her family’s business was he’d stop in from time to time and just say hi. It never hurts to keep an eye out and like she said, dating might not be bad if neither one is really serious. It was something to think about and he smiled as he walked home.

Chapter 6: Business Continues

Alan had a contract the next day and was there in plenty of time. He was to escort a convoy from the mines in Ore Belt all the way to Three Worlds. It would be a long day but he was getting paid by the ship so he figured it would be worth it. He had been looking at new ships and he could afford a new Buster, but he was out flying them a lot with what he had and it started to seem like a step down to him, so he waited and decided he would keep the old Buzzard till he found something he liked better.

They were ready to exit Cloud base Southwest heading north when a pirate patrol spotted them. The Buster fired a missile into a freighter and didn’t last long enough to do it the second time. A harrier was harassing Alan bad but it only took a few seconds to get a good lock and he was toast as well. Then the real fun started. The third ship was a Falcon and he knew one hit from those HEPT’s and he was gone. He dropped a wasp missile on it and got it away from the convoy. The he tried his best to out fly it, and managed to get behind the big ship and with his superior speed and maneuverability he stayed there. The BPAC’s did a nice job and in a second the pilot bailed leaving a slightly shot up Falcon and a tiny speck flying into the distance. Alan was thrilled he had never captured a ship before so he pulled up so close he almost touched it and went across to add his codes to the computer. It was done in a minute and he ordered it to go to the trading station till he had more time to see it. He got back in his ship and went through the north gate and rejoined the convoy.

“I thought we lost you back there.” The lead ship said after a minute.

“The Falcon took a little time,” Alan said as everyone got a chuckle from it.

“I’ll bed it did, those are tough ships and those heavy lasers can mess you up quick, good job, you earned every credit we’re paying you this trip.” Alan was told as he sat back and smiled. The rest of the trip was just routine, and they finally made it to the station. They thanked Alan for a job well done and he got a bonus for defending against three pirate ships. He decided it wasn’t necessary to say he had a Falcon waiting at the station in Cloud base Southwest, he just started back at full seta this time to see what it was really like.

Alan walked around the station and into the docking area where the ship was setting. He was surprised at how big the fighter really was. He hadn’t taken any time to really look at it and he was impressed. It had lots of room in it and the cockpit was roomy and well appointed. If it wasn’t so slow and sluggish he might consider just flying this. On long days these nice padded seats and roomy interior would sure make the day go better. He sat in the pilots seat and checked the info and controls, this idiot wasn’t even running his ship at full tune, or maneuvering either, it was capable of twice the turning speed and at least 30% more speed than it was set for, this made him really think a lot more. It was never going to catch his Buzzard, but with good shields it could take a good beating and had room for a lot more weapons than he could use. It had a single 5 Meg shield left, but was able to carry 2 more shields, up to 25 Meg each, he decided that he’d keep it and spend a little getting it fixed up. It would give him more firepower and better shields at the expense of speed, but you can’t have everything, he thought with a smile. He ordered it to Argon Prime equipment docks and went home for some sleep it was late by now and he had a long and profitable day.

The next day Alan had to consider what to do, he had some money to work with, and he decided that starting out slow would be ok, he ordered a new 25 Meg shield and 4 BPAC’s installed then a good tune up and the maneuvering to top it out. He paid for it all and took it out for a spin, it flew much better, if that other pilot had it set like this he would have been a lot harder to get, Alan thought. He was running low on cash after this but he knew the new ship could pay for itself easily, so he decided to return the Buzzard to his grandfather and let him see the new ship and get his opinion. The ship was ordered back to Julian’s station, and it beat Alan back by a few minutes, no surprise, but when he commed the station for permission to dock Julian jumped in quickly.

“Why did you send the Buzzard back” It was a gift for your graduation, so I didn’t expect to see it here again.” He said smiling

“I got a new ship, so I figured since it was an antique you might want it for your collection, permission to come on board and show you the new ship?” he asked, knowing he’d never be turned down.

“Granted come on in, and we’ll have a cup and talk a while.” The link went dead and Alan docked at Julian’s station. They walked around and through the Falcon and Julian said it was nice for sure. He noticed the 25 Meg shield with a 5 Meg back up and smiled, it was a good idea. They talked a while and Julian said if he got more money later that the ship still needed a little more work, make sure to max the shields , it made good missile protection, and repair any hull damage , it added a lot to the overall performance of the ship. Alan listened intensely and nodded a lot. Julian was an old Pro and he knew his advice was always going to be good. Finally they shook hands and Alan was ready to leave he thanked Julian for the start and said he was happy with the way things were going. Julian told him to avoid getting cocky, when you least expect it you’ll find a pilot just as good as you, and it’ll be tough. Alan smiled and went his way. Now he was ready for more work to replace his used up credits.

People seemed moderately impressed by a young man flying a heavy fighter and contracts were not that hard to find now. They always asked what your flying, but a discoverer or a buster didn’t seem to get the response as saying you’re in a Falcon or Nova. He worked steady for a few weeks and added another 25 Meg shield to the ship. He was happy with the BPAC’s with 4 on board he was doing real damage without running out of power fast. It was a good combination and he decided it was the best set up he’d used yet.

He was coming home from a mission to Atreus’ Clouds when he heard a call for help, the voice sounded familiar so he made a dive into Elena’s Fortune. There he found a single Buster trying to take on a group of Harriers and losing badly. They had her cornered and as she tried spinning around to fire they danced away and returned behind her. Her shields were almost gone and Alan decided to step in. He fired a wasp missile and one ship turned to run but even a harrier isn’t that fast. It went up in flames and this gave her a chance to get a good lock on another and she blasted it into bits. The third was back in a second, if they got this close he wasn’t leaving just yet. Alan held back and left his friend finish the fight and she finally dropped her ship to a stop right next to him, with a red face and a big grin he could see through the cockpit easily.

“I owe you a free dinner, at least.” She said smiling and Alan just laughed saying she really needed to tune her ship up a little, it was way to slow to be trying to catch Harriers. She chuckled saying she was just getting a few contracts and she didn’t have time to tune it up yet, but today made it perfectly clear that it was the first thing that needed done.

“I have to go, my convoy is in Split Fire by now, stop by the restaurant tonight and I’ll
take care of you.” She said with a wicked grin and turned and Seta’d through the south gate. Alan just sat for a second shaking his head, she was really very pretty, and he liked her, but she certainly was forward, he thought, but then was that really so bad? He’d have to think about this a little more, he decided, and stopped at the trading station to look for more work.

It appeared his new friend had gotten the last contract here, so he decided to work his way back home. He was leaving the station when he saw something on radar; it was not too far away so he thought he’d check it out. He found a cargo container that the computer couldn’t identify, so he had to pause and think about it, was it some new device that the pirates dropped or some new illegal substance the computer had never seen before? He doubted that it was a captured pirate ship so whatever they had it would know. He decided to take a chance and scoop it up then he stopped and walked into cargo to see what it was. He scanned it carefully and opened the end of the box, it was a set of 2 missiles, but he had never seen any like them before, definitely something new. He left immediately for Argon Prime, someone there was going to want to see this for sure, He decided.

He entered Argon Prime and called security, instead he got a very smiling relative on the link.

“Well hello there, Alan what can Argon Security do for you today?” she asked.

“Hello, Helena, err, that is Captain Gardna...” he stammered, he wasn’t sure what was proper here.

“Thank you Alan, here Captain Gardna will do, what can I do for you today?” she asked a gain, he told her about the fight and the crate he found and she was very interested, it seemed from time to time something like this comes up as the pirates are always experimenting with new things like everyone else, so what they think is an improvement they wanted to see. He offered the container to her and she accepted, he moved into range and she beamed it out of his ship.” I got to get one of those sometime.” He thought they seemed great to have.

“I have credited your account for retrieval of 2 unknown devices, I think you’ll see we are quite generous when we are lucky enough to get one of these, so you be careful and have a good day.” She said as Alan nodded and he went his way. He didn’t even look to see what he got, he did something to help Argon and made some money doing it, and he was happy with that.

Chapter 7: Decisions, Decisions

Alan went home and got a shower and some clean cloths, he decided that he’d go see if she made it home ok and take here up on her offer…of a free meal. He smiled a lot thinking about her attitude, she was very pretty, and she was one of those women that knew it all to well. She was just the kind of woman he liked having around, under certain conditions, but he wasn’t sure she understood conditions too well. He stopped to think and laughed as he entered the restaurant.

He was seated and ordered his meal and he hadn’t seen her yet, but he was confident she was ok; her contract was pretty close when he had seen her. He was just starting to eat when a voice said pleasantly,

“I’m glad you took me up on my offer.” He looked up and knew now he was in real trouble. She had found out he was here and took the time to clean up and dress well, and he was at a severe loss of words as she sat down across from him.

“A free meal at the best restaurant in the station, how could I refuse, “he said finally?

“Oh that, “she said chuckling and sat back with her arms closed giving him a serious stare.

“Ok, what,” he asked after a second.

“Just trying to figure you out, you’re a really nice guy and I like you a lot, but you really seem to be kind of stand offish.” She said finally.

“I’m just careful and a little old fashioned.” Alan said with a big grin.

“Ah, I see so girls who speak their minds are not allowed I guess.” She said seriously.

“I never said that, just I like to choose who or when and I’m just starting out so I want to be on my own for a while,” he started to explain.

“I’m not offering KIDS just some dating, I like you, you nut and I don’t say that too often, if I’m a little too forward for you right now, just say so and I’ll leave you alone.” She said getting a little upset.

“Well, just as an example, you and I have talked, hugged and fought together, and now a very nice offer, and we don’t even know each others NAMES.” He stressed at the end, she chuckled out loud and did see his point, and she has a habit of diving in when she sees something she really wants.

She stood and stuck out her hand as did he.

“I’m Alan Brennan, please to meet you.” He said very formally.

“Hi, Mr. Brennan, I’m Celeste Marani, welcome to our restaurant.” She said seriously and they both shook hands and sat down.

“See, a nice official introduction, all nice and legal.” She said teasing, and Alan had to laugh in spite of himself.

“I like you too Celeste, and the offer is very enticing, but maybe after we’ve known each other a while, ok?” he said with a sweet little grin that made her seem less jilted for the moment.

“I can’t say for sure, I have a list of eligible men waiting…” she said looking around and he didn’t doubt it for a second.

“I’ll just have to take my chances, then.” Alan said as she gave him a huge grin and a quick kiss and walked away. Alan smiled and finished his dinner, as good to her word, it was free. Now all he had to do was go home and bump his head on the bulkhead a few times for being an idiot, he thought and walked slowly home, chuckling to himself.

He had just left the station the next morning when his coms buzzed, he slowed down and answered it, and there was another very attractive older woman with bright red hair and a winning smile. He was starting to wander where all the redheads were coming from all of a sudden.

“Ah, Mr. Brennan, good to see you out this morning,” She said with a grin.

“And you are,” he asked smiling.

“I understand proper introductions are important to you, so I am Miri Marani, the young pilot you saved yesterday was my granddaughter and I’m here to thank you in the name of our family, officially of course.” She said very seriously and while smiling the whole time.

“I appreciate it, but your granddaughter didn’t need a lot of help, she was doing pretty well her self.” Alan said, lying just a bit.

“The famous Brennan sense of humor, of course, it’s been a while since I talked to one of you, but I do know a bit about Brennan men.” She said laughing to herself, as Alan hadn’t a clue.

“Needless to say your welcome at any of our businesses and we will do our very best to make you happy, things like this are taken seriously by our family and you have earned a place here, that is all for now, I know my granddaughter is very pleased to meet you, that might be something to consider some time in the future perhaps, as we now accept you as a worthy addition to our family. If you so decide of course.” She said with a chuckle and the link went black. Alan was really starting to get confused here why he would care what the family thought, it was between him and Celeste, and they were both waiting, or at least he was, he thought laughing and heading towards the gate. He guessed her age and thought to himself, what did she mean she knew about Brennan men? Maybe he’d ask his grandfather some time.

Alan went to work with all this new in his brain, he didn’t understand any of this, and at the moment he just didn’t care. He had to be sharp to do his job and all these distractions were getting to him. He started a contract and sure enough they got jumped at the first gate. Alan made it through with his charges, but had to admit it was the worst flying he had done yet. This was wearing in him and he decided he had to get it out in the open and he went to see his grandfather so he’d have someone to talk to about it.

He docked as Saya and Julian welcomed him in, he said he was having a little trouble and was looking for advice. Julian nodded and they went to set down in the living room. Alan said he met a very nice girl, and Saya stopped him and said maybe he just wanted to talk to his grandfather then and laughing started to leave. Julian asked who it was and he said Celeste Marani and his grandfather started to laugh and for some reason his grandmother decided to stay instead.

“What’s going on, are we at war with the Marani’s or something? Even Miri Marani acted weird when we talked this morning.” He said as Saya started to laugh harder and Julian just shook his head.

“And what did Miri say to you this morning that got you this upset?” Julian asked as Saya sat with this huge grin that Julian didn’t appreciate.

“She said I saved her granddaughter from a pirate patrol yesterday and now, somehow, I’m accepted as family, I don’t get it, Celeste and I went to flight school together, but we’re not, well dating or anything.” He said being as tactful as possible.

Julian nodded trying to be cool, but Saya was having a great time, another Brennan man getting wrapped up with Marani women, it was priceless.

“I do like Celeste, but I told her at her restaurant that I’m just getting started and I’m not ready for any thing full time yet, and she seemed to understand that, we may date later on, we already talked about that too.” Alan said trying to explain.

“You said you liked her and you could date later, Alan that’s all the poor girl needed, she went right to her family to make sure they approved of you first.” Saya chipped in.
Alan was still confused, he never knew you needed family permission to see someone; sure he hadn’t dated a lot yet, but still.

“I guess I’m just dense, I don’t get it,” Alan said shaking his head in a worried look.

“Alan you got nothing to worry about they approve of you, that’s good, but it doesn’t mean you’re committed to anything, now it’s up to you, and Celeste, but some families are very strict about these things.” Julian tried to explain.

“How do you know Miri Marani, is she in the Argon Business Conglomerate with you guys?” Alan asked as Saya started chuckling again.

“Yes as a mater of fact she is.” Julian said starting to get annoyed at Saya’s laughter.

“Your grandfather and I met Miri many years ago, we took a job to save her from some pirates and she really liked your grandfather for a while.” Saya said as Alan’s eyes opened wide and Julian’s face almost exploded with red.

“Waite, what do you mean you two took a job, I didn’t know you were a working pilot before.” Alan asked looking at Saya, who suddenly wasn’t laughing as loud, but Julian just now started, Alan was even more confused, but it was coming together, he thought.

“OH, my yes, your grandmother was quite the pilot there for a while; she was known all over for her …style.” Julian said as Saya stopped short and gave him a dirty look.

“She had this pilots outfit…” Julian started.
“Ok. That’s it, I think Alan has heard enough he’s got a handle on who the Marani’s are and he knows he’s not in any trouble, well at least yet.” She said smiling but Alan was now very curious why she was suddenly so ready to throw him out?

“It couldn’t have been THAT bad Grandma, “Alan said with a chuckle as she tried to explain she was well, chasing his grandfather for a while there, and she might have embarrassed herself a bit.

By now Julian was rolling in the isles as Alan started to smile widely, he couldn’t believe these two. they were every bit as a live and active at their age as he was, and it was obvious, well maybe more at the moment he thought and decided that he could let his grandmother off the hook for this one. He thanked them for the talk and they walked him to the door. He got hugs and he was back out with this huge smile. He wasn’t being roped into anything, any more than any guy is, but at least he was sure the family liked him, now if and when he decided… he thought and chuckled all the way home, his grandmother a hot shot pilot, he’d never would have guessed.

Julian turned to Saya after Alan left and gave her a big kiss, and she hugged him saying thank you for not bringing it up any more and he just smiled and said he had a picture of that outfit somewhere…and she threatened to have things removed if it ever came to light again.

Chapter 8: Things Get Serious

Alan was at work the next day when he heard a message. There was a pirate patrol coming through the north gate, it consisted of several heavy fighters and one Corvette. He started in the direction to get a better look; even with his new Falcon he had no chance against them. He decided to stay back a safe distance to watch them pass, but it was not to be. They spotted him from halfway across the sector and two heavy fighters rushed him.
He dropped a wasp missile on one, finishing it off with laser fire. The second ship would not be this easy; it approached at top speed firing heavily. For a few minutes things looked bad, he had taken a couple of hits and his shields were nearly gone. Alan made a fast turn and got behind the fighter and opened fire with everything he had. It took a few minutes for the shield to go down, but then he nearly had him.

As weapons fire began striking the back of the ship he dropped a wasp missile to finish off the heavy fighter. The rest of the convoy was rapidly approaching and he knew he had to leave now; he turned and made a quick retreat. Just as he approached the West gate an argon patrol came through, they turned an attacked the approaching convoy with heavy laser fire and missiles. Things quickly turned around and Alan could see a real opportunity here by now his shields were back at full power and he jumped into formation to assist.
The corvette was taking a heavy beating but continued to fire. Fighters were flying everywhere with missiles and lasers firing, and the two Novas were nearby firing heavily on the patrol. Alan moved quickly behind one, and got off a few good shots, its back turret was firing heavily at all the fighters, except him. Now was his chance, he dropped a wasp missile and opened fire with his lasers, in a few moments the shields failed. The Nova was helpless; Allen demanded his surrender and the pilot ejected. While the other fighters were finishing off the convoy he quickly claimed his prize. In a few minutes he and his new ship were on their way back to argon prime, he decided he had a good day, and took his prize to the shipyard. He got a good price for it, and went home a happy man.

Allen went to the café to get himself some dinner, after a short while he decided to watch the news and there was an article about the attack. He had not seen in news reporter in the area however there was a short clip showing some action. It appeared the Corvette lasted until the last second when two argon novas finished it off with missiles. Allen was pretty happy with the way things are going today he had made a good profit and his ship took very little damage, if he could continue on like this he would be getting a new ship in no time.

Alan had seen an article in the shipyard for a new Nova Raider, he liked the design very much, and it had good speed. It was quite expensive but if things kept going like this he would have one soon enough. He seriously thought about moving up to a better apartment if he was going to entertain friends he would need a nicer place. After some consideration he decided to wait a while.
After the conversation with Celeste’s Grandmother he was sure that she was not out of his life yet. He liked her very much she was quite attractive and very smart but he was not ready for a serious relationship. If she could be patient and wait a while he was sure they could get together. He thought about her quite a lot and couldn’t see anyone he knew

that he would rather be with. He decided to make regular trips to the restaurant to let her know he hadn’t forgotten her.

Now that Alan had seen his first Corvette, he was sure there would be many more. If the Pirates were moving up to larger ships it was inevitable. He had seen the incredible damage it was capable of doing and while he wished he could have one he knew it was a long time into the future. The ship was very large and had a nice clean look about it, it was truly just a small capital ship, he wasn’t even sure one person can fly it alone but he was surely willing to give it a try. He reminded himself to tell his grandfather that he had seen one and about the big battle, if he heard about these things from Allen himself, than he wouldn’t worry about Alan so much.

Allen never failed to mention to let his father and mother know he does all right, even though they didn’t talk directly he didn’t want them to worry. Allen knew he was just a stubborn as his father and he didn’t hold it completely against him, when Allen knew he was ready he would talk to him personally, but for now he decided to let things remain the same.

By now Allen’s law license had really paid for itself, especially since it was free. There wasn’t a day gone by that he didn’t make a few thousand credits. It wasn’t hard to make a living this way and any ships he captured were extra money. He could see that was the way to go, if he could capture a few more ships then he would truly be a success. Without at least one million credits in the bank he would never be satisfied, perhaps it was his father that made him think this way, but somehow he thought he was right. Even without that to think about, he knew that ships were very expensive and a better ship then what he had would cost one million or more, the sheer fact he owned such a ship proved his success, at least it would when he finally got there. He smiled to himself and went back to his apartment for some rest.

Alan was being a lot more careful now since he has seen this first Corvette, he knew that there would be more. With the massive firepower the Corvette had Alan began to stay well away, without a lot of help and a load missiles he had no chance against one. What was more important was the fact they traveled with a heavy patrol. He began the making of a plan; if he was careful he could pick the fighters off from a distance. Anytime a medium or heavy fighter was in the patrol he could stay back 10 kilometers and hit with a missile this would get its attention and it may very well chase him, if this was true he could choose his targets, which would help him a lot in his future endeavors. By dividing the patrols he had much better chance, both to stay alive and make a profit. He was sure it would work, all he had to do was stay away from that Corvette and he had it made, or at least he hopes.

Well that was the plan now to see if it actually worked.

The very next day he switched his wasp missiles for silkworms he was sure with these new armaments he’d have a much better chance. He flew to Elena’s Fortune and set his trap. For two hours nothing happened, then a pirate patrol came through the gate, it consisted of two Novas, and three buzzards. From his vantage point he could see them pass, before they got close to the center of the sector, he launched two silkworm missiles. One struck the last buzzard in line and destroyed it the second hit a buzzard and ripped its shields off and it drifted to a stop. The rest of the patrol was furious it turned quickly and began pursuing him. He quickly out ran the two Novas and was left alone with final Buzzard, for a few seconds they danced together, but his four PACs made quick work of it.

By this time an Aragon patrol had entered again and saw the fight, they quickly moved in to attack the two novas. With all this extra help Allen then retrieved his buzzard, it was in remarkably good condition, and he’d followed it to the shipyard. His plan worked right down to relying on heavy ships for assistance if the argon patrol had been a few moments later things would’ve been different. But with same good luck and good timing he knew he could do it, after making a deal for his new ship he flew home a happy man once more.
