NEW Mod, X-FLEET [Mod review]
Hello My name is Jim (AKA Defiant1) I decided to write a review of the new X-fleet mod (don't expect the best review written...this is my first full review i have done)...which is a conversion well at the time its not a conversion mod, its an addition but we hope to make it a conversion mod some time down the road.
the mod originally started with me and a couple of people talking and thinking "what your our military and other armed forces that used vehicles possibly look like if they were space based...." and with that the X-fleet was born...
Then Grev came along and then it all started to come together and now thanks to Grev77 who has put in a lot of work these models are high end, and perhaps par with some of the other mods out their!
we have been working for about two or three months (and a few of us in obscurity like me) helping grev with numerous sessions of testing and QC and kicking out ideas and testing new ideas and just a whole list of things.
The mod currently consists of some of the following (some may be recognizable others may not be as quickly) but we have the USS Missouri, USS Yorktown, USS Normandy for our capital ships.
For our fighters we have the F-4U "corsair" and the F-14 Tomcat
and we even have a DC-9 for a freighter!
The textures are awesome (which is kind of an understatement to my end).
and the best part is we have even more yes MORE coming! some things are being worked on as I type this and others are still in the design stages...so stay tuned for more!
and now for some pictures!

as you can see from our images our guys are hard at work to bring high quality ships to ya, and yes this is only the tip of our proverbial iceberg!

No offense, but I don't think X-Fleet will be many people's thing. This is supposed to be a far-future game with SPACE SHIPS, not space with crude looking navy ships and planes flying around. The pilot body models look kinda disturbing (I don't think they'll programing to even twitch). Once again, this is interesting, just not my thing.

I think the time and effort put into these models has created something really unique. The screen shots on the x fleet site show off the quality of the ships much better than those on here imho. I'm a particular fan of the carrier and its realistic looking flightdeck.
Just thought i'd post some positive feedback- keep up the good work!

thanks, the screen shots used in the review were from when we first started some of thoes models
were working on a few new (and interesting) models at this time, wont tell you what they are but I will say this, if your tired of thoes other guys makeing fun of you just because you have a mercury and they got a super freighter (or a fleet of them) you can now laugh at them as you take over the space lanes with your new toy...(and put the competition in its place)...of course the matenence may be a bit on the expencive side but hey....whats progress with out the matenence?

we also are designing each ship to be its own role, meanning carriers are just carriers, escorts are for escorting, distroyers are for anti fighter support and so on so fourth...each ship is ment to suppliment the others giveing that "fleet feel" were looking to give, your fighters and fighter bombers are what should be doing the scrapping...leave the big ships in an area where they are safe from enemy fighters...
were working on a few transports (freighters) which will be just that...freighters

We have always had an unwritten rule about trashing people's work just because they didn't like the design or features it brought.
The rule goes along the lines that if people feel the need to continue to do this I will have the need to grip the last breath out of their soon to be lifeless torso's
Constrcutive comments are always welcome of course.

Not my sort of thing Defiant, like a few others i think normal ships shouldn't be in space.
I'm sure other people are going to like this idea though, so it is worth pursuing for them, it will also give you a niche as i cant remember seeing any other modding team working on something like this.
Looking at your images, the one which shows the pilot looks like the texture or model is a bit blocky around the neck, is this just due to how close you have come to get the screenshot?
If you are sat in the cockpit view, can you see the arms?
There are also some sort of instruments on the roof of the cockpit, are these animated?
Just a couple of things which may need a look at to push it that bit further into the realms of realism.
It looks like you have only used ships from the USS fleet, are these going to be one race, are you going to use other nations ships and planes for the other races?
Is there a link for the website somewhere, i'm not going to sign up as i have far too much to do, but i wouldn't mind having a look at the other images on there.

My 2 cents if i may!
The concept is new, it's interesting and many people like it! I really like the models, if they could be better or worst, that's not the issue, if you have fun and enjoy working on them, go for it! I like the concept but, i see too much of naval ships already to play the mod, not to mention the no time for it issue but, i think it's worth the efford you guys place in it. Resuming my line of creative thinking, just to add: keep up the good work

Great work! The ships look very good. I love that the ships are built for a purpose and have a specific role within the x-fleet. Nice!

thanks for the thoughts...
to asnwer digs comment...
were also keeping in mind that this is a space based game, we know, we also want to make it interesting...
as for the DC-9 cabin thats really from an ATR 500-72 series plane (I spend too much time around planes i know...)
the cockpit is modeled off of a 737 with minor touches from a "trip-7" mixed in...as for the pilot we plan on getting him fixed to the best of our abilities.

I think thats what went on, keep in mind thies screen shots were taken DURING our beta session (before we even put them out for download) so were planning on fixing thoes things, we just wanted to get them out to see how people would like them and what reaction they would get.DIGSIN wrote:

WOW I really like this
I always wonder what humans would actually design for space if they were ships for fighting.
wing commander movie seemed similar in its idea of craft.
Can u post a link to your site ?(had to google it) Pics there are far better and give more of an idea .

Thanks Observe. I could not have done it without the wealth of information you and the FXP crew have put on the net.Observe wrote:Please permit me to congratulate you on your mod, and for all the hard work you've put into it with excellent result.
As for the comments on the crew being a little blocky, I am fully aware of that. I could have made ships and crewa that are photo realistic, but I didn't want them to bog down a computer. This is important since they are designed to work as a fleet. So the "eye candy" had to make a few sacrifices to allow the frame rates to stay at acceptable levels.
Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for their comments. It means a lot that there are people taking notice of my work. Even if the comments are negitive. Negitive comments are just as important as the positive ones. They help me motivate to do better (if they are constructive, otherwise they piss me off, LOL).
