I am still firmly waiting until Feb/March next year to upgrade and then I am going to get a whole new Vsta, Dx10 card system. Got caught on the change from AGP to PCI and want to make sure this time I can make a smooth transition one the prices have dropped a bit. I am hoping in 12 months the 8800 GT will have dropped enough to make it affordable as I would prefer to make the jump with a good system that can hold its own for a while.

Oh and by then Crysis will have been patched Razz

Well I'm just making the move to PCI-e now so its going to be a long time before I worry about things like DX10 unless something like X4 comes along requires it to run.

If it does that within the next couple of years it'd mean I wouldn't get it.

They reviewed the 8600GTS I think on The Register, and concluded that it's performance is only a few FPS above a 7950, with the only difference being DX10 support. A nice enough card, but probably not worth upgrading for.

Assuming you already have a 7950, of course. I'm sure an 8600 would be a suitable upgrade for my 7600GS! Smile

Nope. In the benches, it got terrible performance.. Just enable a little bit AA and it goes down to unplayable in games like FEAR or others. Its really not worth the money. At least wait for Ati to release its R600, which will be at least cheaper for the same performance.

The German Gamestar magazine has reviewed some of the new cards and posted benchmarks on their site, here and here. The results are the average fps.

Edit: More charts, starting with this page.

@Daimonddragon, if the benchmarks above are anything to go by, it looks like it is worth it if you want to upgrade from a 7600 GT equivalent or lower - assuming it's a mid-range card you're looking for. Whether ATI's new range will be worth it, remains to be seen...

I have Dx10 on my Xpress 1100, which is apparently only a 30% gain over the Xpress 200, and they're both just the cores from a X300 card with half speed.

As I understand it, just.

But the 1100 seems slower than the 200 Confused alot.

Well I give my 8800GTX thumbs up. It can run all the games I have at full settings and 1920x1200.

To be honest I'm slowly buying the components for my next system. PCIe and SATA based. At the mo I'm still using an AGP and IDE based system. It's hopefully reliable enough by now.

As far as Vista goes , NOOOOOO WAAAAAAY, not until it's been out 3 or four years and is its SP2 form.

Judging by those benchmarks I'm glad I sprung for an 8800GTS rather than waiting for a mid range model.

And on the subject, there are new drivers out for both XP and Vista. Had a blue screen problem with them at first in XP, which somehow replicated itself in Vista even though I hadn't installed any yet. They seem to work after some persistance though.

AnandTech don't think that it's worth upgrading from a 7600 GT, based on their test results. *Link*
