NEWS: Server move and limited availability
Tonight our database server will be moved to a new data center (scheduled for the time between 22:00 GMT+1 today until 09:00 GMT+1 tomorrow morning).
As a result we expect limited site and forum availability during that time.
To keep the site as accessible as possible we will be switching to a secondary database server for the duration of the move but will put the site and forums in "read only" mode.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

Okay, more sensibly: I notice 'forum2' and 'forum3' now just direct to 'forum'. I presume this means we now have one mega-server, rather than 3 distributed ones. Does this mean we're going to lose some of the restricitions on the search function too?

The redirection of forum2 and forum3 has been in place for some time already and isn't related to the server move. It represents a change in the way the load is distributed rather than any change to the servers themselves. Because of the sheer size of the forum database, I'd say that the restrictions on the search facility are likely to be a permanent feature.

Every game is different. That Boron won the auction and got the sector from a Teladi, but ran out of cash and had to sell the sector to me at 400 mil loss.Joshua_Dahl wrote:No, he is the infamous BurnIt! that shamefully lost the auction to me.

Somewhat on topic: there are many ways to handle load. One is to have big server. Other is to have many servers and have something to divide the requests among them. The neatest way, which apparently has been working for a while is that the load distributor is the only one seen from outside and real servers are hidden behind it. No need to have forum0--forum999 in public.
The redirection of 'forum3' to 'forum' is probably just a convenience backward compatibility patch so we do not have to update our shortcuts. That is the problem of revealing anything on public: if you need to change it later, somebody's links will break. Clean interface and hidden implementation.

Errm,
Been a mighty long time since the front page was updated. Any news at all here folks ?
Looking forward to expansion and all the rest of it.
Sorry if all this is covered elsewhere (did a couple of searches and couldn't find anything - so thought I'd ask)
Scritty
