Chapter 2: The Excelsior
Captain Trasker brought the M3 into dock at the shipyard in Argon Prime, leaving the computer to power down the ship he opened the hatch and climbed the ladder down. The station commander was waiting for him.
“Jack, how’ve you been these past couple months?”
“Pretty good actually, you?”
“Yep, I suppose you’ve come to show me to my new ship then.”
“Well yes actually, Shes a real beauty. They’ve just finished building her. All the newest and top of the range systems. They’ve even replaced the standard weapons for something called phasers but the torpedo system is the same as ever. It has a top speed of 512MPS and can host up to 10 10GJ shields.”
“Now that is impressive”
As commander Jack went on listing specs they got into a turbo-lift and half a fraction after the doors closed they opened again. They both approached the viewing windows with anticipation of what was to come. Captain Trasker looked out onto what he thought was utter beauty.
“Captain Trasker, I here by appoint The Excelsior to your command. Have fun.”
The Excelsior was a battleship of pure beauty, the thin egg shaped saucer section, the elegant swept back engineering section and the engine pods, glowing blue with a fierce potential.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before, how many are we building.”
“Apparently this is the only one their building, at least for now. It’s going to be the flagship of the fleet.”
As they made their way to the ship, the report that the Decker had been destroyed with all hands. The COMMS officer relayed the message to the Excelsior for the captain, and her orders where included.
Saturday, 1600 hours. Argon Prime Shipyard. Day of the launch.
The captain had finished his tour. He had just walked through the turbo lift doors when his COMMS officer said to him, “sir you’ve got a message waiting for you, shall I play it back.”
“What’s does it contain?”
“Orders and a video file.”
“Play the video, then put the orders on the viewer.”
The captain stared at the viewer, gob smacked at what he saw. It showed the Decker’s demise, the massive explosion with all the Xenon fighters and escape pods exploding. Then the screen went blank and was replaced with orders.
“Captain Trasker, congratulations on getting the flagship, you should find some interesting features in there. But to orders, if you have watched the video you know about the demise of one of our destroyers. Your job is to (UNDER CLOAK) go into the xenon sector and explore it. You should find the process goes a little quicker than usual.
Secondary Objective: capture a Xenon ship and bring it back to have it studied.”
“Well we better make a start then, COMMS request launch clearance, OPS clear all moorings, clear the departure route.”
“Launch clearance received captain, we are clear to proceed with our mission.”
“Helm, take us out, one quarter speed.”
Cables detached off the sides of the ship. The ship started moving forwards, slowly at first, gently getting faster until it had reached top speed. People watched from their ships as the Argon flagship launched for the first time. It was of the best thing any being had seen in its life, unless of course you where a Xenon or Khakk.
“Launch complete captain.” Said the helm officer.
“I assume we have a jump drive do we.”
“Yes sir”
“Plot a course for Xenon sector 102, engage cloaking device, RED ALERT.” Even as he spoke the computer recognised his commands and klaxons screamed, people ran to their stations in the giant ship and shields where raised, phasors were charged and torpedoes where loaded.
“Course plotted and laid in captain”
“Engage Jump-Drive”

Jump-Drive activating” said the computer.
As they plummeted through hyperspace the cloaking device was fully activated, they emerged from the south gate when the autopilot activated and boosted them to full engine power.
“Full scan of the area”
“Scanning, Captain there appears to be over 200 carriers, 150 destroyers and thousands of fighters.”
“My God”
“And that’s just in the gate system, long range scans report there to be hundreds more capital ships in interplanetary space.”
“well we better get on with scanning the system, what did they mean by make it go faster,”
“we are fitted out with something called WARP drive, that’s why the engines glow blue on top. It allows us to travel at light speed in interplanetary space. In a system like this it should take us thirty mizauras to scan.”
“Get on it, plot a course round the system maximum speed.”
“Ready Captain”
“Engage”
