how do I use system override software to claim ships.

The same as normally claiming ships. Only you dont have to spacewalk anymore.

once you have made the pilot bail and the ship is blue, target it, press 'I' then claim.

Have to still be close - 35m or less in most instances, but you don't need to get in and out...
I found quite useful in a few places if you haven't time to spacewalk

The distance depends on the type of ship. The bigger the ship, the further away you can be. In the M7 I know you can claim from about 130m out.

It's 500m from the center of the ship you're claiming. So you'll need to be a bit closer with TP/TS, than you will with fighters.

I don't think that's true. Like GG said, the distance appears to be dependent on the size of the ship, so you actually have to be closer to an M5 to claim it than you do to an M3 or TS--which is the opposite of what you said.
