Singularity Engine Time Accelerator. It's a device for compressing time and speeding up the game. The 'J' key activates it.

Put it more simply, SETA = Fast Forward.

SETA Singularity Engine Time Accelerator

It's a extension that can be added to any ship (pretty cheap too).
The purpose of it to speed up the passing of time around you. It doesnt make you ship go any faster - just makes everything go faster.
Useful when traveling over long distances... or if you are really impatient, like me:)

Be careful when using it together with autopilot though.

I don't hardly use it anymore. Occasionally, if I'm being impatient, I'll use it to speed up the run to a station, but beyond that, it's seldom used anymore.

I guess after 10 months of playing, I'm just not in as big of a hurry as I used to be. :)

be careful when using SETA though. if you leave it on to long your race ranks and fighting rank will begin to drop.

just a little tip to all those who dont know.
You know you have had enough when you dock at a pirate base and toss a couple bucks at the monitor...

Not to mention it's a great way to lose all your possessions.

haha yes this is also true. try not to be in crowded sectors when using for a long period of time or even a short time.

and apperantly that happens anyway, if you dont do any fighting or trading for a LONG time. But with SETA the effect becomes noticable that much faster.

By the way, in Options, you can set SETA to be faster than the default value. You can run it at 10x, if your system can handle it.

Plus you seriously stress your PC for quite a while, as well as wasting electricity.

Exactly. SETA will just "amplify" this affect. If you value your ranks, and the time/effort it took to gain them, leaving the game sit unattended for hours would be ill-advised. More so leaving it unattended for hours with the J key pressed. :P

Actually no. The game has a built-in penalty for long periods of unattended running. After 10 ingame minutes (iirc) the ranks start to drop unless there's an input by the player detected. If you're running SETA X10, that's only 1 minute realtime before the effect starts to kick in.

well
this (all the posts here) is a quite lengthy answer to the question

Yeah. I think that's what me and fud were saying.
I dont think when he said "SETA will just 'amplify' this affect" - he actually meant that the penalty itself will 'increase'.

hush, we're not done yet :P

i run my SETA on 10x always, and for easily more than two mins at a time without fighting (i do trading though) SETA x10 isn't that much of a drain on the comp really (hey, i only have a geforce 6200 and i'm usually playing on med textures and high shader, so i might be used to a little lag :P)

and what about losing possesions? so far i havn't lost didly squat and i've used SETA longer in real time than not in my game =/ (maybe the ranks only start dropping when you reach a certain level?)

one thing's for sure, i couldn't go through X3 without SETA :P
and it sure isn't fun when your teladi falcon maxes out on 93 km/h and the gate is still 50+ km away @_@
