You know what would be cool?
System Override Software that let you steal ships already owned and piloted by someone else.
Make it more expensive and build some sort of skill-based concept to it so capping isn't as easy as 'Target->Claim'.
Eg.
1- You follow a ship and load the software.
2- It 'hacks' into the ships computer and presents a ship-dependant directory structure.
3- You have to locate a certain file which the SOS opens to present you with a series of binary codes.
4-You would need to convert the binary code into their respective numbers to for a 'pass-code'
5- This pass code would allow you to transfer system control to you, ejecting the current pilot.
There would be variations of the directory structure and 'filename' depending on what ship you are trying to steal.
You would need to be proficient in binary (so stealing is limited to your ability and boredom-threshold limit)
Maybe the bigger the ship, the longer the passcode therefore more binary to decode.
Maybe use hexidecimal for bigger ships that would make it nigh on impossible for a noob to steal an m2
and of coure the current alt-tab issue prevents people from using external decoding software.
Ok scripters, get to it!

If the ship has a freight transporter and spare cargo space, he'll be transported to the cargo hold as a slave.
If the ship doesn't have a freight transporter, he'll be ejected into the void, left to fend for himself, or picked up by your newly acquired ship and sold into slavery...or shot, whichever you prefer.
Its iron-clad I tells ya!

WOW! what a cool idea. It's been said "There are only 10 kinds of people in the world, those who know Binary and those who dont". It can also be said "There are thoes who know there ABCDEF and those who know Hexidecimal". You are correct in saying "that would make it nigh on impossible for a noob to steal an m2 ". I wonder where a noob would even look to find out how to decode Binary, which is easy
, or Hex, which is a real challenge even if you know what it is or how it works
.
Maybe the best of both worlds would be that the noob could buy the code from the BBS for one ship in a 1 jump distence and when they find it they can compaire the code to the binary as a way to learn how it works, then they can go out and Capture every ship in the galaxy too.
Just a thought or two, but I like the idea

hmmm
i like the idea but it sounds to me like all you want to do is make it hard for others to do what you can do. like making a mode where your god and everyone else bows at your feet because you can give them the ships they want but they have no hope of getting it.
it would mean no capping ships like people have done in ALL X variants and only people who are so bored and have 20 minutes to spare want to do all of the binary and hexidecimal decoding necessary for the ships.
the idea is good but the motivation behind it, while it might seem amazing and brilliant as an idea is selfish and flawed.
