Savegame corruption / defragmentation / savefile location

Post by Deleted User » Fri, 30. Dec 05, 12:44

Can you change the location of the savegames :?: :?:

I am noticing (as have others) that corrupt gamesaves
are more probable if you don't regularly defragment.

But it takes an age to defragment the C: drive where
games are saved:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\Egosoft\X3\save

Ideally I want to save to a small partition (created with Partition Magic)
so that defrag. is much quicker (and hence likely to be more frequent).

I have looked in the registry & google (site:) searched this site
for relevant key words, but can't find anything.

Can anyone help?

Having long load and save times? Read ahead.

These long load and save times are caused by savegame files with huge filesizes. (~45 mb)
The savegames are located in My Documents\Egosoft\X3\save.

Are you having such big savegame files? Read ahead.

1. Start the game and load your savegame, which can take atleast 5 minutes.
2. Go to the script editor. (click here for instructions on how to get there)
3. Press the Clear Debug Messages button and wait, this can take up to 5 minutes.
4. Press the Reinit Script Caches button.
5. Quit the script editor and save your game.

You will now notice that the save and load times have significantly decreased because the filesize of the savegame has lowered to around 6 mb.

Seems the ONLY :o way to do it is to change your
user setting so that ALL your document saves default
to where you want.

In WinXP:
Click Start, and then point to My Documents.

Right-click My Documents, and then click Properties.
Click the Target tab. In the Target box:

Use the 'Move' button, OR
Type the path to the folder location that you want, and then click OK.
If the folder does not exist, the Create Message dialog box is displayed.
Click Yes to create the folder, and then click OK.

(it will ask if you want to move existing files to the news location)

Why would script debug messages ever need stored in a save game file? Especially if they're going to make it about 8 times bigger than it needs to be? :headbang: If they have to go anywhere (given that 99% of players will never need to look at them) it should be a separate file.

Dave: it's possible to defrag files individually; have a look at this free tool. It should let you limit the defragging to your X3 .sav files quite easily.

It's well worth having a look at the other stuff - Process Explorer is a superb replacement for the standard Windows Task Manager, for example.
