X2 ships IRL
I don't know if it is a coincidence or if some of the ship designs really have been inspired by models of already "existing" spaceships.
When I saw the movie Starship Troopers, I really liked the big ship Rodger Young. Now I look forward to fly the Rodger Young aka Titan myself.

Wow the resemblance is pretty big compared to the Titan.
Still, I don't know how much the devs at Egosoft were inspired by ship models from other games or movies etc.
When you look at the Boron ships then I think they're pretty uniqe.
It wouldn't bother me though if they did use other designs for inspiration, as long as they look cool, and I think the ships are looking mighty good in X².

Come watch me on Twitch where I occasionally play several of the X games
uhh... pretty pics
where did you find those? the watermarks seem to hint to a website with sweet stuff like that on it but the watermarked url (http://www.baltech.com/onezero/starship/starship.htm) doesn`t seem to work
tried almost every combination as well as google but didn`t find anything
if there is a website with stuff like that somewhere out there... ME... MUST... KNOW...
cheers,
Chris

Every month or so, someone posts the resemblance with the Rodger Young from Starship Troopers. It has been done before ...
And yes, they look very much alike. The split mamba's looks a bit like a Kilrathi fighter from Wing Commander 3, and one Argon fighter looks like a weird Tie Fighter.
Still, X² has pretty unique designs for a spacetitle ...

If you want to go back far enough, you could always argue that the Earth destroyer you see during the intro sequence to X-BTF looks very similar to the Babylon 5 Omega class destroyer, which in turn is a dead ringer for the Alexei Leonov from the movie 2010. You could even argue that the raised bridge structures on the X2 capital ships are an homage to the star destroyers from Star Wars. Thing is, I doubt there's deliberate copying involved--it's far more likely the designers designed what they thought was a cool ship, without associating it with some movie they saw 3 years before. (I speak as someone who named a city in a fantasy world I was working on "Windhoek", and didn't discover for years that this was actually a real city in South Africa that I subconsciously remembered from reading Wilbur Smith!).
Having said that, I can think of only a few truly original starship designs. The original series Enterprise and the Liberator from Blake's 7 were truly unique and never copied...

Umm... http://www.ironfrost.net/images/traderpic.jpg? Well, just the same basic configuration, a central fuselage and three engine pods.Lord Hachiman wrote:For those of you who don't know and those [including myself] who need reminding.........The Liberatorpjknibbs wrote: Having said that, I can think of only a few truly original starship designs. The Titan also somehow reminds me of the Hyperion cruisers in B5, although after comparing pics they don't seem too similar after all. Maybe it's the smooth curving front part with the more edgy & rugged look further aft that's common to both...
And the Split obviously had some help from the Narn when designing the Python.
Er...I think that's reaching a bit, to be honest. If you're going to start saying that this ship must be a copy of that ship because it has the same number of segments then the mothership from Independence Day is clearly a ripoff of the Super Star Destroyer from Star Wars...monophonic wrote:Umm... http://www.ironfrost.net/images/traderpic.jpg? I'm glad the new Titan looks like the Rodger Young from ST. And the Tie intercepterish fighters I like alot too. I think comparisons to other ships is stretching things an aweful lot though. I would like it if one of the Xenon fighter ships looked alot like the cylon ships from Battlestar Galactica. That kind of similarity is evocative and adds more depth to the game. I do hope the Titan isnt changed to look less like the Rodger Young-tho woundn't mind if it looked a little more like it. Isnt the Titan alot shorter and fatter? Maybe the scenes I saw were from bad angles but I like the capital ships to be long like a skyscraper flying at you.

I don't think anything talked about in this thread is actually a copy of anything else, really. It's just that with the amount of space ships being designed lately, there doesn't seem to be so many completely new ideas left. Unless you want to go downright bizarre, that is.
A car has four.. three wheels (trotters trading co) they all use terra firma to get about, but no matter the design they all 'look' like a box (borg cube) on wheels .. give or take a curve or two
Xenon proppelor heads ? for all we know the Xenon might have a technology that creates a non vacum space in a bubble around the props that could provide thrust ?
Disc shaped craft hint at control of gravity .. perhaps even the technology to manufacture gravity ? X2 UFO can i buy some please now ? I feel the urge to TRADE sadly with this kind of techno know how, i might have to FIGHT to get it .. right ?
Or maybe BUILD a non conformist space ship i THINK
The Goners my fav bunch a guys in the X-Games not to mention the technological edge they have in the X-Games ... have they been sidelined ? hope not and i hope they have a secret elusive ship we all tear our hair out trying to aqquire

I always liked the Teladi Falcon, because it looks a bit like this (http://members.tripod.com/~Mark_Mart/raider.html) ship.JrStonewall wrote:I would like it if one of the Xenon fighter ships looked alot like the cylon ships from Battlestar Galactica.
The Cylon Raider is my favourite starfighter of all times. Here a pic of the Falcon: http://xt-screen.by.ru/Info/Teladi_Falcon.html
