M3 Fighter Guide

Post by Java Jawa » Tue, 29. Mar 05, 12:01

Hey,

OK so I ain't racked up that many posts AS OF YET, but I thought I could be more helpful by providing a comprehensive guide to the M3 fighters of the X Universe in X2: The Threat; their technical information, their uses and my opinion w/a 0-5 star system. I owe a great deal of the tech. specs. to

argonopedia.ppcis.org
and
www.the-commander.com

for their invaulable information which saved me a LOT of time :D !

THE M3 GUIDE FOR THE N00B TO THE X UNIVERSE . . .

M3 HEAVY FIGHTER CLASS

Overview: This Fighter Class is, unquestionably, going to be your primary fighter once you can afford it. Once you get your hands on one of these babies, you won't wan't to let go (until you can afford a Capital Ship, that is). Their enormous firepower, powerful shielding and decent hull strength make them a formidable foe but some have bonuses and weaknesses . . .

ARGON NOVA . . .

When the long serving Argon Elite was retired four jazuras ago, the Argon military was left without an M3 fighter, that was until a group of Shipwrights in Omicron Lyrae put forward plans for a new type of ship. The Nova was born shortly afterwards, and after two jazuras of testing virtually all of the older Elite class ship have been replaced by this new craft. Capable of holding powerful weaponry, and armed with an aft turret, the Nova is bound to serve the Argon military for many jazuras to come.

Race: Argon Federation
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 65.31m/s, upgradeable to 163.28m/s
Capacity: 86 units, upgradeable to 236 units
Hull size: 10000 mass units
Steering: 19.99%, upgradeable to 99.99%
Acceleration: 12 m/s²
Shield Strength: 3 x 25mw shields (max.) = 75mw total

This ship can mount 3 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to L (large) containers.

Where to buy: Station Configuration Price
Federal Argon Shipyard S 816600
Federal Argon Shipyard M 969888
Federal Argon Shipyard L 1906476
Federal Argon Wharf S 816600
Federal Argon Wharf M 969888
Federal Argon Wharf L 1906476

Compatible Lasers: Main: A IRE, A/B PAC, A/B HEPT, Mass Driver, IonD
Turret: A IRE, A/B/G PAC, Mass Driver

Compatible Missiles: Mosquito, WASP, Dragonfly, Silkworm, Hornet

My Opinion: The first M3 I ever flew, the addition of a back turret makes this one of the most powerful M3s and this addition in particular lets you concentrate on gunning down ships without fear of missiles coming at you from the back or enemy ships trailing you. It is fairly slow, however, and can't keep up with, say, the Split Mamba. It is well protected, well armed looks cool and has a mid-range price-tag (as far as M3's go by price) and I would recommend this for a bounty hunter, noob or jump-happy light trader due to its cargo bay and protection. Oh, it looks pretty damn cool too, :) .

Rating: 4 out of 5; the speed lets it down

BORON BARRACUDA . . .

The Barracuda is a new development to replace the Eel. When the plans for the Barracuda were developed, it was made clear that the Eel was too out-dated. The Barracuda improved on the design with a new power generator. This then allowed for the weaponry to be upgraded and room for slightly increased cargo space and improved acceleration. As the Barracuda is now in service the Eel is no longer supported by the Boron Navy.

Race: Kingdom of Boron
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 60m/s, upgradeable to 204m/s
Capacity: 63 units, upgradeable to 208 units
Hull size: 7500 mass units
Steering: 19%, upgradeable to 79.99%
Acceleration: 9 m/s²
Shield Strength: 2 x 25mw shield (max.) = 50mw total

This ship can mount 2 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to M (medium) containers.

Where to buy: Station Configuration Price
Royal Boron Dry-Dock S 849064
Royal Boron Dry-Dock M 958556
Royal Boron Dry-Dock L 1753644
Royal Boron Shipyard S 849064
Royal Boron Shipyard M 958556
Royal Boron Shipyard L 1753644

Compatible Lasers: Main: A/B/G IRE, A/B/G PAC, A/B/ HEPT, IonD

Compatible Missiles: Mosquito, WASP, Dragonfly, Silkworm, Hornet

My Opinion: The Barracuda, is a fast, reliable tactical combat fighter that is one of the cheaper M3's and is very powerful. It's ability to carry a full variety of weapon types (save the PSGs and PPCs) make this ship suitable for a range of roles; escort fighter, bomber, wingman. I like the design and it is, like all Boron ships, well balanced. It can also be found everywhere and is used by a lot of Boron pilots, so it may be worthwhile checking out the specs of this ship to see how best to combat it. I liked it, but the somewhat limited cargo hold put me off as I like to jump everywhere!

Rating: 4 Stars out 5; a decent fighter, like the nova in many ways, but the differences equal out at the end so its a tie.

Image Link: http://www.the-commander.com/x2barracuda.htm

PARANID PERSEUS . . .

The Perseus is the successor to the Prometheus. Its first test run was considered an embarrassment to the Paranid as it was stolen by a Pirate, leading to their request for external help to recover it. The ship was initially tested with shields used for corvette ships but they wrecked havoc with some of the internal systems so they were changed for above standard sizes.

Race: Paranid Empire
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 105.1m/s, upgradeable to 210.2m/s
Capacity: 60 units, upgradeable to 76 units
Hull size: 9000 mass units
Steering: 20.49%, upgradeable to 75.84%
Acceleration: 15 m/s²
Shield Strength: 3 x 25mw shield (max.) = 75mw total

This ship can mount 3 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to M (medium) containers.

Where to buy: Station Configuration Price
Paranid Pier S 946448
Paranid Pier M 1113212
Paranid Pier L 1901564
Paranid Shipyard S 946448
Paranid Shipyard M 1113212
Paranid Shipyard L 1901564

Compatible Lasers: Main:A/B/G IRE, A/B/G PAC, A HEPT, A/B PSG!!!!!!!!!!

Compatible Missiles: Mosquito, WASP, Dragonfly, Silkworm, Hornet

My Opinion: A VERY decent ship, I myself fly one of these babies everywhere and let me tell you, they are gorjuss! The combined firepower of 3 PSGs in unparalled by anything! (save 4 for the M4 Bayamon) This can chew through anything within a matter of seconds; it doesn't matter if you choose to have HEPTs or PSGs, they both make a deadly ship deadlier. It is fast, nicely protected, v. well armed and looks pretty damned good; this is the ideal ship for beginner bounty hunters or an escort for your first TL/M6. Buy this. Now.

Rating: 4.5 Stars out of 5; small cargo bay not suited for my jump-happy attitude.

Image Link: http://www.the-commander.com/x2perseus.htm

N.B; the PSG class weapon has a wide spread effect and should only be used if you don't care about race relations or you are a while away from any friendly ships that you don't want to be vaporised. It is best to keep spare HEPTs in the hold in case you get a friendly fire warning!

PIRATE ORINOCO . . .

This ship is considered to be a valuable asset to the pirates, as they cannot buy ships from any of the races, except ships supplied by the Teladi. It can use a variety of weapons and missiles. It can usually defend itself against similar opponents, and has a fair amount of cargo space. Most of the time it is escorted by Pirate Bayamons and Pirate Mandalays.

Race: Pirate Factions
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 76.03m/s, upgradeable to 174.88m/s
Capacity: 124 units, upgradeable to 374 units
Hull size: 7500 mass units
Steering: 22.99%, upgradeable to 68.99%
Acceleration: 7 m/s²
Shield Strength: 2 x 25mw shield (max.) = 50mw total

This ship can mount 2 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to L (large) containers.

Compatible lasers: main: A/B/G/ IRE, A/B/G PAC, A HEPT, A/B PSG, IonD

Compatible missiles: Mosquito, WASP, Dragonfly, Silkworm

My Opinion: Believe me, this ship looks ugly, handles ugly, feels ugly but it has some okay weapon configurations and shielding and it's faster than a Nova. HOWEVER! In light of recent outcries, I have reviewed the Orinoco and it is better than I first made it out to be! While the looks adn controls aren't inspiring, it is an okay ship, but if you've capped one of these, then you probably already have an m3 so you can just make some more creds. at a ship yard or use it as a wingman.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars; sell off for creds at the local shipyard or use it for wingman duties, your choice!

Image Link: http://www.the-commander.com/x2orinoco.htm

N.B; the PSG class weapon has a wide spread effect and should only be used if you don't care about race relations or you are a while away from any friendly ships that you don't want to be vaporised. It is best to keep spare HEPTs in the hold in case you get a friendly fire warning!

SPLIT MAMBA

A long serving and deadly fighter developed by the Split Military. It has been only in recent jazuras that this ship has been made public. The current Split Patriarch has a small fleet of these ships that act as escort ships that accompany the primary destroyer of the fleet. In the hands of an experienced pilot, this ship can survive the darkest of battles, because of the ships high speed he can avid most of laserbeams and missiles.

Race: Split Dynasty
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 114.45m/s, upgradeable to 286.14m/s
Capacity: 84 units, upgradeable to 224 units
Hull size: 7000 mass units
Steering: 25%, upgradeable to 100%
Acceleration: 11 m/s²
Shield Strength: 1 x 25mw shield (max.) = 25mw total

This ship can mount 2 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to L (large) containers.

Where to buy: Station Configuration Price
Split Dockyard S 1206144
Split Dockyard M 1271840
Split Dockyard L 1925428
Split Shipyard S 1206144
Split Shipyard M 1271840
Split Shipyard L 1925428

Compatible Lasers: Main : A/B/G IRE, A/B/G PAC, A/B HEPT, Mass Driver

Compatible Missiles: Mosquito, WASP, Dragonfly, Silkworm

My Opinion: Well, it certainly looks cool, it handles brilliantly, has some good weapon configurations (including the much-loved Mass Driver) but it has a pretty lousy shields; like all split ships. I've flown the mamba, and its alright; the speed is what is so amazing, really - but I wouldn't choose it for a major fight. Its great for pirates, because if you botch it, you can get away quickly, still, not one for n00bs. Leave it to the vets. It is ok for bounty hunters due to the high cargo capacity, though.

Rating: 3.5 Stars out of 5: A decent ship, but should be well left alone by n00bs and traders; leave this one for the pros.

Image Link: http://www.the-commander.com/x2mamba.htm

TELADI FALCON . . .

The Teladi Falcon fighter is a hybrid between the old Argon Elite and the Boron Piranha, with some Split technology thrown in for good measure. It is fast, well armed and can be found operating in most sectors. It is suspected that some of these ships have been leased by the Teladi Company Space Fleet to operate on behalf of the pirates, although to date no actual proof of this agreement can be established.

Race: Teladi Company
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 71.53m/s, upgradeable to 135.9m/s
Capacity: 53 units, upgradeable to 283 units
Hull size: 11000 mass units
Steering: 22.49%, upgradeable to 101.24%
Acceleration: 3 m/s²
Shield Strength: 2 x 25mw shield (max.) = 50mw total

This ship can mount 2 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to L (large) containers.

Where to buy: Station Configuration Price
Teladi Shipyard S 1076296
Teladi Shipyard M 1229584
Teladi Shipyard L 1896652
Teladi Showroom S 1076296
Teladi Showroom M 1229584
Teladi Showroom L 1896652

Compatible Lasers: Main: A/B/G IRE, A/B/G PAC, A HEPT, A PSG IonD

Compatible Missiles: See Orinoco

My Opinion: A decent ship with decent stats, save the speed. I Think it is the slowest of all the M3's, it handles like an Argnu and isnt particularly aesthetic, but, hey, each to their own? Good for traders and patient bounty hunters.

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

Image Link: http://www.the-commander.com/x2falcon.htm

N.B; the PSG class weapon has a wide spread effect and should only be used if you don't care about race relations or you are a while away from any friendly ships that you don't want to be vaporised. It is best to keep spare HEPTs in the hold in case you get a friendly fire warning!

KHAAK M3*

*Use a script to get if you're a n00b, these are the daddies of m3's, the mothas of all them haxxors who will get l33t3d by thse asses! No, really, stay away from them, their lasers will fry you and if the pilot bails out, generally you've already let off enough shots at it to kill your own ship! annoying, huh?*

This ship first appeared in an assault party. It is the heaviest fighter class ship of this race. It is speculated that it is equivalent to an M3 class. No pilots have yet survived to relay more information from a battlefield. It is rumoured that some ships though have been captured and are being investigated to extract alien technology.

Race: Khaak Hives
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 90.09m/s, upgradeable to 198m/s
Capacity: 95 units, upgradeable to 150 units
Hull size: 6000 mass units
Steering: 34.99%, upgradeable to 104.99%
Acceleration: 17 m/s²
Shield Strength: 3 x 25mw shield (max.) = 75mw total

This ship can mount 3 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to M (medium) containers.

Compatible Lasers: Main: **A/B Kyon Particle Emitter**

Compatible Missiles: Mosquito, WASP, Dragonfly, Silkworm, Hornet, **Sting, Needle, Thorn**

**You need to get these weapons via a script or a capped m3, too**

My Opinion: Flawless. I don't use mine because its not challenging if anything gets in its way. Basically, you want to just back away if you see one. If you own one, thats a different story  . . .

Rating: 5.5 Star out of 5 (disqualified for very fact that its pilotable); this motha will leave the f*ck*rs running for their lives!

Image Link: http://www.the-commander.com/x2khaakfighter.htm

N.B; The Kyon emitters of the Khaak (the beam weapons on their ships) are very deadly, but very precise weapons. It helps to be a good shot when using this ship, or at least the weapons, as they tend to stray from their target. Also note that they are not as effective against hulls as they are shields, so use missiles wisely in this respect.

XENON L

The L is the most powerful Xenon fighter developed; it is armed with multiple lasers, and powerful shields. These ships are often seen attacking passing ships trying to take shortcuts through their sectors. Like the other Xenon ships, the L has been updated in the last few jazuras.

Race: Xenon
Class: Fighter (M3)
Speed: 69.36m/s, upgradeable to 159.54m/s
Capacity: 74 units, upgradeable to 234 units
Hull size: 10000 mass units
Steering: 45.49%, upgradeable to 181.99%
Acceleration: 11 m/s²
Shield Strength: 3 x 75mw shield (max.) = 75mw total

This ship can mount 2 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to L (large) containers.

Compatible Lasers: A/B/G IRE, A/B/G PAC, A HEPT

Compatible Missiles: See Orinoco

My Opinion: Pretty ugly and a pointless addition to your fleet, it handles well, but doesnt have the speed or acceleration to match it. It is well protected, but has a limited weapon payload and . . . uhh . . . yeah.

Rating: 2 Stars out of 5; Decent Escort Ship, but pointless capping (or downloading a script for!) Not really worth anything except to sell.

Image Link: http://www.the-commander.com/x2xenonl.htm

HONOURARY MENTIONS . . .

SPLIT IGUANA (TP)

This fast transport ship has been in service for many jazuras now. The ship was originally intended to be a Slave transport craft, which transported slaves from where they were captured to the factories where they would spend the rest of their tazuras. Now the ship is used to transport personnel from sector to sector. It is armed with adequate weaponry, but its main defence is speed.

Race: Split Dynasty
Class: Passenger Transport (TP)
Speed: 162.16m/s, upgradeable to 308.1m/s
Capacity: 450 units, upgradeable to 450 units
Hull size: 15000 mass units
Steering: 7.99%, upgradeable to 15.19%
Acceleration: 11 m/s²

This ship can mount 4 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to L (large) containers.

Where to buy: Station Configuration Price
Split Dockyard S 278950
Split Dockyard M 401918
Split Dockyard L 846630
Split Shipyard S 278950
Split Shipyard M 401918
Split Shipyard L 846630

Compatible Lasers: Main: A/B IRE, A/B/G PAC, IonD
Turret: A/B IRE, A/B/G PAC, IonD

Compatible Missiles: Mosquito

My Opinion: A TP in all but name, overwhelming pressure had made me decide that this useful ship should get a mention. It has near-to-the-level of firepower that an M3 can deal out and it has a lot of cargo, decent shields but, as with all TP's/TS's, is about twice as cheap as standard M3s! It is quite zippy for a ship that was an ex-slave transporter, it looks pretty and is available in all good Split Ship Retail Outlets. Buy it today and you'll even get a coupon for a Split Mamba Mk. II (redeemable in 1500 years) . . .

Rating: 4 Stars out of 5; a decent ship, and the only shuttle that can give a mamba flight a run for it's money!

PARANID DEMETER (TS)

The Demeter has been used for some jazuras now, replacing the old Paranid Ganymede model, improving on all of its predecessors systems. This ship was first brought into service to serve only the Paranid Fleet, but later slowly replaced the Ganymede because of their speed to bring the Paranid Economy back to levels of the Argon and Boron.

Race: Paranid Empire
Class: Small Freighter (TS)
Speed: 58.55m/s, upgradeable to 175.67m/s
Capacity: 999 units, upgradeable to 1665 units
Hull size: 27000 mass units
Steering: 5.99%, upgradeable to 17.99%
Acceleration: 3 m/s²

This ship can mount 2 weapon(s), and is compatible with up to XL (extra large) containers.

Where to buy: Station Configuration Price
Paranid Pier S 103939
Paranid Pier M 232971
Paranid Pier L 661515
Paranid Shipyard S 103939
Paranid Shipyard M 232971
Paranid Shipyard L 661515

Compatible Lasers: Main: A/B/G IRE, A PSG, IonD
Turret: A/B/G IRE, A PAC, A PSG, IonD

Compatible Missiles: Mosquito

My Opinion: Great ship. It's the M3 of the TS Class, having superior firepower and weapons technology to all other TS's. It is faster than a nova, can mount wonderful PSG's and is good for trading, fighting and even OOSD! No matter whether you like the Paranid or not, you have to have one of these ships.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5; the superior firepower of the Demeter pushes it ahead of the Iguana, even if it is slower.

AWARDS:

Never use M3 ship. I prefer Igouana (good weapons, shields, speed price and cargo space for trading). When i have lot of money i buy M6 or M2.

IMHO the best M3 is TP (Igouana)

CKarl;

Theres always gotta be ONE difficult one ain't there . . . :D

pccenter;

It really is down to preference. Some, who can afford them, like capital ships and corvettes for their firepower and flagship qualities, but some like the 'independent' feel of a small ship. It also depends on what you want to do in the x universe, a bounty hunter almost definetely needs a M3, M4 or M6 but a trader is more likely to need the cargo space of a TP or TS.

Keep 'em comin' lads!

Ok but Igouana have beter firepower from many of M3 ships and cost 1/3 or 1/4 less. You need about 1200k to full equip with shields and wepons.

Good point, but either way, 1200K - 1900K is still a fair bit for a n00b, for which this guide was designed for in the first place!

I think you missed the sheild info from the ships. You should also maybe point out the friendly fire issues you can get when using psgs, and the fact that the KM3, due to the nature of its weapons, cannot easily take out ships with very strong sheilds.

As for the nova, the back turret is only useful because the thing is so slow, all other fighters can outrun the dangerous missiles. :P

What i think we need is a guide compiled by a number of people, each of whom prefers a different ship. You get a price and stats comparison, and then a short speil on how to fly it to its best, and what type of pilot prefers that craft. That way people can compare their flying style to that required by the ship, and chose accordingly.

Im an Nova jocky, if i want speed i'll use my JD, if i want massive firepower i'll call in my flight group to support me. I've lost count of the times the rear turret has litteraly saved my ass, and IMO nothing can do what the Nova can do in good hands. Partly that is coz i have Xai Advanced AI, so other ships are an acutal THREAT, partly coz i like to be in the thick of things, when you have shit comming fomr all over the pace and you have to hang in there and take the pain, or run like a scared child, and ive never been one for running.

That doesnt mean its the best ship, just the best for ME. Even the promise of an M6 couldnt get me out of my fighter cockpit!
want the FACTS about X2/X3?

:o The orinoco is a lot better than you give it credit. One of two m3s I've used single handedly to completely wipe out pirate bases easily.
I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again. Apparently it's something I'm good at...

Many of the ships appeal to me.

Nova is my personal weapon of choice because it's an ace capture ship and the back turret gives missile defence.

Orinoco has a good cargo hold and I like the APSGs. It's also faster than my Nova.

I'm also quite fond of the Persius, because I like having 3 forward mounted guns and not sit on a crappy hull like the Bayamon. They also hold BPSGs. ;) Oh and it's also pretty zippy.

However I voted Khaak M3. It's speed is formidable, and with the upgrade can clock up 360. With the firing software the beams just about lock on all by themselves and cling to an enemy like mud, unlike a BHEPT where it can manoeuvre clear of the blasts. And the way those beams just burn clean through the shields and hull. The Khaak is a true predator, a real killer. ^_^
