Is inside outside?

Post by jlehtone » Wed, 25. Apr 18, 22:41

A silly question did pop up into my mind. One that I don't recall ever asking.

Is inside outside?

Most of us know the holy trinity of combat resolution:
  • In sector: the sector that you are in
  • Out of Sector (OOS): all the other sectors
  • Observed OOS: a remote sector, whose sector map is open
When I dock into Station, where am I? Am I still "in the sector", where the Station is, or "out"?

The answer is obvious, when you dock into external clamps/pier. You can still see the space around the Station. The shots of hostile ships smashing on the Station, where you hide ...

There are internal docking bays for some ships in some Stations. In or Out? Well, you do know that the landing area of Argon Trading Station is still semi-open, which should serve as a hint. Furthermore, Advanced Satellite video feed does function, even though you are docked, and every minute movement of the ships out there is still observable.

What about X2? There you had "proper" internal docking. You could even fly inside the Stations, and that did give a TARDIS vibe. Was that "remote" to the sector?

No. Even there the sector outside is "in sector". I had to check, and check I did.

All in all, the answer is logical.

Why did it took years to ask the obvious? :?

You should ask from Mi Ton. No other Boron has shown equal aptitude for delivering information.

But you should fly in a not quite linear direct curse, last time I finished the mission without a single hit on the Express and ofcause without aid from the AP Hammer. Steering extension and fight mk2 make you a bad target for drunkewn Pirates

Hi,

you are in sector, if you can

1) build a station
2) switch the extended satellite into camera view
3) see landing ships not flying straight to the center of the station icon, but using the defined landing strips to a docking place away from this center.

IIRC the game map changes time elapsed depending upon <player> viewpoint:
  • In-ship IS veiwpoint is (game) realtime

OOS 'indirect' view (ie simply looking at sector map rather than ) has 100x timestep granularity; ie if you continue watching, ships will move (& react) in 'steps' 100x distance than they would IS

OOS 'focused' map view is 10x realtime granularity (eg zooming to a specific sector via satellite or other asset. Hence assorted exploits..
Numbers above may well be incorrect (this is all from memory), but I believe this is how such things work in the X3 series. This info is gained from DEV post(s) on this forum from way back; the Wiki may help with more precise info if anyone's bothered to repost it..

Apologies for my poor explanation - PM me for further discussion if you wish
