X2 Keyboard inconsistently functional

Post by kohlrak » Thu, 28. Dec 17, 12:04

I bought the X-Trilogy from GOG, and I was told that since the story-lines are largely independent of each other, i'm just best off just running the most up to date version that my computer can handle. In this case, it's X2: The Threat. However, this problem applies to X1 as well, but i barely tested it.

The issue at hand is that sometimes the keyboard works, and sometimes it does not. I started running it with the joystick, noticed that not all my joystick buttons are mappable, and noticed the keyboard didn't work with the joystick enabled (except certain keys, and the numpad keys still work [using numlock]), thus, along with the fact the axes feel weird to me given the flight sims i play, i figured mouse and keyboard would be better (btw, is there any way to change the input delay on the mouse?). Upon unplugging the joystick and restarting, the keyboard suddenly worked, so i naturally assumed that most of the keys are disabled when the joystick is plugged in (since I read in the manual that the joystick overrides the throttle). However, now the keyboard isn't working again, even though the joystick isn't plugged in. As you can tell from my typing it works in other programs.

Since it happens with more than one game it is unlikely to be a game installation issue.

Start with checking the "ignore last settings and start with default" if there is such an option available on the game's opening splash screen. You would lose any custom control set up if you do this.

Next see this FAQ and see if anything there helps.

Next run the relevant X game exe in Administrator mode and see if the problem reappears.

Good luck.

I did all those things. I got it to work fine for a couple days, then it stopped working again today (decided not to post). I think fudging with one of the menus on the loader manages to get it to work since that's the last thing i did before to get it working again, yet it's back to it's old tricks. The only thing I haven't done is updated the keyboard driver (which is weird, as a PS/2 keyboard driver is simple enough it should never need updated [heck, if that's the case and i can't find it, maybe i'll port the one i wrote]).

I'm having trouble finding a proper update for it, too. I tried unplugging my mouse before starting the game (it apparently registers as a HID keyboard in device manager), but that didn't work either.

EDIT: Yeah, it was already the newest version. Really wish MS would stop using the squirrel method of finding drivers, as 2 hours is a really long time to wait just to find out I already had the latest version.

Is there any chance that you could borrow a different keyboard or two and see if the problem happens with the two games using those? Ideally, using a different PS/2 one and then a USB one would be a good comparison test to eliminate the PS/2 driver as the culprit.

It's a laptop, so it's PS/2 BUS rather than an actual PS/2 port. I can, in effect, eliminate that it's the culprit another way: I have over 250 games on this system, using direct X and openGL, and they do not share this issue. This issue also displays itself in that certain keys do work, while other keys do not. PS/2 drivers bring in scan codes of all keys, enable the keyboard, and delete the previous keystroke from the keyboard buffer. Nothing more, nothing less. For the PS/2 driver to be dysfunctional, it would not only have to not work with the game, but also every other program on the system. The next step would be the HAL and/or the kernel. Once again, you would see the same effects. This then boils down to the APIs that the game is using.

The exe is polling DINPUT8.dll, which i assume is directX 8. It migt not be, but either way, I have another game (Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines) that also uses DINPUT8.dll for input. I suppose I could've simplified this to, if it's the keyboard driver, API, or whatever above, that game would also have the same issues, while it does not. This means that the problem must be in the code of the game itself, and nothing above.

Now, a disclaimer: That doesn't mean egosoft wrote bad code or anything (it could, but it doesn't). The fact that it works inconsistently (especially given a lack of variable changes in the game's directory between times it works and doesn't work) tells me that, most likely, the error is in some sort of code that attaches DINPUT to the keyboard. My experience with how these things work is (since i never dealt with DirectX myself), is that somewhere along the line, one of the functions returns a list of applicable devices. The way things work in newer versions of windows and such, a large number of devices will appear as other devices (i have a mouse that shows up as a keyboard [probably for the extra buttons on it] and a mouse, for example). Instead of checking the entire list, most programmers automatically pick the first result in the array.

Since my last post here, i've been able to consistently fix the problem by rebooting the computer. I'm betting system instability coupled with the lack of checking (which is common, and was never an issue back when X1 and X2 were made unless someone had 2 keyboards) was the over all issue, where the instability causes some keyboard registered devices to swap places if windows repolls all of it's hardware (perhaps when RAM gets tight? as this is an issue on my computer), and a reboot causes the keyboard to end up properly on the poll before the USB devices even get initialized.

But whether or not that's the case depends on whether my supposition of directX returns a list of keyboard devices and egosoft didn't check them all, since other games I have using the same DLLs are not experiencing this issue. If that is not the case, there's another issue, and the next time i reboot to solve the issue would be the time that rebooting doesn't fix the problem (plus it's really annoying waiting 10 minutes for a reboot to finish just to play a game).

What would nail the coffin shut is if there's some way to get a log or to intercept directX's error log and create one. Direct Input very likely would be reporting this to the program via dierrAcquire(), but i know nothing about directX outside of the fact that it's standard for windows games.

EDIT: The more i look at the EXE, the more i feel like they might be using more than 1 API for input, probably rushed to get the product out before a deadline. That might explain why some keys work while others don't. The real question is what is it that separates working from not working in the code?

The counter-argument, of course, to your point that all your other games work fine on your system so it must be the game's fault, is that the keyboard input to the game works fine on tens of thousands of other people's systems and you seem to be the only one (that I'm currently aware of) having problems. I should also point out that one game using a particular API working while another doesn't is not necessarily strong evidence that the second game is at fault; you only have to look at graphics driver change-logs to see numerous examples of game-specific problems caused by driver issues. :)

That being said I'll try to offer what help I can. Yes, the game uses the DirectInput 8 interface, which was the last version of DirectInput, meaning that it was also carried forward to DirectX 9. No, as far as I know it doesn't use different input code for different keys, but since I don't have the source code easily to hand, I can't check how much it differs from that used in earlier or later games in the series. I do know, however, that the X3 series games also use DirectInput 8 for control input and that these games have no such differences. Note that X2 had several patches over a period at least a year or two after release, it seems pretty unlikely that any fundamental inconsistencies in the input would have remained regardless of any rush at release time.

My suggestions for things to try, if you haven't done so already:
- Try the X3 games if you can, and see if the same problem occurs in those.
- Try plugging in a USB keyboard and seeing if that helps.
- Try and work out exactly which keys are affected and see whether there could be some common feature of these (this could be tricky, as it could be something very hardware-specific, such as how they are connected).

Not necessarily. If everyone's using the same libraries and drivers as egosoft, egosoft shouldn't expect a different result. The drivers and API are effectively a control, here. How one uses the API is different, and i suspect that the reason I'm the only one with this issue is probably because i'm the only one who dared to play X2 on a dated netbook running Win7. That's a pretty odd combination to begin with, and i do question how many people would be running it on an ever newer system. And, remember, most people would rather give up and not even so much as register on forums if they had these kinds of issues. That said, as long as there's a workaround that works consistently, it's not that big of a deal. At some point i'll find a better computer that can handle X3 or better, and probably wouldn't have these issues.
I should also point out that one game using a particular API working while another doesn't is not necessarily strong evidence that the second game is at fault; you only have to look at graphics driver change-logs to see numerous examples of game-specific problems caused by driver issues. :)
Graphics code is alot more dynamic than input code, especially given shader usage, anymore. The GPU issues seem to be a bit more of a recent thing, since consoles don't have that issue (presumably no one should). The more room you have to do what you want, the more room for error, or finding obscure bugs in the drivers.

You'd know better than me, i'm just guessing given the evidence. To be honest, it totally boggles my mind to begin with, since only certain keys work when this happens.
Reproduction seems to be an issue, too, which adds to the mystery of this obscure behavior. If i knew what triggered it, i could better test it. What i can tell you is, it's easier to tell you what keys DO work, rather than which ones don't. The numpad keys do (which is amusing in it's own way, since hitting hte enter key doesn't work, but holding down FN and hitting enter does, which registers as numpad enter key, even though it's the same key on the actual hardware). I can't remember if azqw worked or not, but i do remember the mappable keys (lctrl, lalt, alt gr, rctrl, etc) all worked still. Everything else, didn't work at all, which lead to my initial assumption that it was tied to having a joystick, 'cause the first keys i learned were the ones that were also tied to the stick, so i incorrectly assumed that the stick disabled the keyboard shortcuts for the things bound to it. I later realized i was wrong in that assumption, which makes this so incredibly strange.

I'll have to try to figure out exactly how to reproduce it, because as of this post i've finally reached the threshold where it worked over 50% of the time i tried it. As long as the game stays open, the problem doesn't appear, either. Whatever is happening is happening before the first video file runs.

Just to make one point, a *lot* of people have played those games on Win7 (or earlier) with variously-dated hardwares, many being laptops. It was really the X3 games that pushed the requirements beyond the capability of non-gaming legacy laptops. The X games you are trying really are quite elderly now.

Many of the 'X2 keyboard or keys not working' types of issues reported here over that time were found to be with wireless keyboards as per the FAQ I linked above or from a joystick/controller overriding keys. In X3 there were some marginally similar complaints; most were found to be from Steam/game installation issues, mods acting up, forgotten key-bindings or the result of OS/driver releases/updates being out of step. (A common successful fix back then was reloading a system restore point.)

In short I have found several 'keyboard issue' topics in X game reports from back then but none so far that match yours to any great extent. I would have expected to find many more if the problem were inherent within the game code. Whether there is some latent susceptibility in your system or that yours is a near-unique hardware/software/set-up, I couldn't really say.

Just for historical correctness and to make you feel a bit less singled out, see this thread that I found for a blast from the past where game code was the issue (for one OS).

His problem seems most similar to mine, actually. I read the post before. The main difference being it happens to me at all times when the event goes down, as opposed to only in the log.

Unexpectedly happened again. I don't see anything about bumping or double posting, even though this is already the top non-stickied thread, but in case my last message was already read (and there's no reason to reply so i have no idea if it has been) i'm just going to bump.

Don't mind me, i was getting ready for my almost to bed snack. In a moment of brilliance (and wasting what was left of my intelligence for the day), I decided to record it on the fly. In case you don't actually want to sit through it (and get jealous at the plate of bacon on a starwars themed plate), i got to try a USB keyboard (not recorded since it's as dusty as sin) and the problem still showed while using it. Apparently, not all numpad keys work (i assumed so because of enter only working with numpad). So, the only functional keys are lctrl, lalt, ralt, rctrl, ↑, ↓, ←, →, Q, W, and numpad enter. Not even shift works.
