Return to the Commonwealth

Post by Ripskar » Mon, 3. Apr 17, 11:01

Hello, been a while since I last visited here.
I've been having trouble with my computer (no VGA signal) and so no X for me...
Ultimately it all became too much and there really isn't anything else I can access that 'does it' for me. Trading and complex building were always my favourites.
To this end I ultimately loaded X3R onto my mum's machine, wasn't sure it would take, it isn't exactly built for gaming, but it runs and I'm back in the Buster getting my arse handed to me by pirates... (I'd forgotten how dangerous they were...)
Joy... :D
My dogfighting is rusty as heck too...

And worth Cr 80,000...
Picked one up early on and I needed the creds more than the bang.

In my head the X3 games have become mangled into a non-existent whole, and I'm trying to find sectors or buy ships that don't exist yet...
The BBS is taking a while to get used to again, though knowledge of the freebie ships certainly speeds up the frustrating scrounging section at the start (where my primary income was from salvaging dropped missiles) I even picked up a Pandora crate giving me an Iguana Vanguard that can do 283m/s... I still have to work on my Paranid rep to get a docking computer, my manual docking in that thing makes autopillock look like an expert!
It does however open up a whole new world of income, faster than any buster and able to carry 166 units of Space Fuel plus e-cells for the jump drive from Herron's Nebula to wherever the party is... :P

1 day and 12 hrs in I have Cr 2,700,000... Definitely wasn't that quick off the mark first time round...
Picked up another Pandora crate, the Iggy Vanguard now hits 383m/s and docking is downright crazy. :o
Still need to work on my race rep...

Yeah it is much harder in X3:R. Gaining rep was a real pain.

Quick tip though. If you are are below zero rep with a race and you donate to them on the BBS, you will not gain any rep. Figured that one out the hard way. Lost something like 50 mil doing that and couldn't figure it out until I asked here.

Found a docking computer on one of the freebie ships... Think I just lost a reason to be friendly with the three-eyed zealots...

And I've finished the main plot. never bought a ship, never built a factory...
Got dumped in front of the police so instantly lost my new rep and override software...
I suppose it's time to see if I remember where Bala Gi runs into you...

edit; Bala Gi started just after I passed the Cr 5,000,000 mark.

edit 2; Apprently the forum isn't letting me post another reply ATM thus this edit.
It looks like my first ship purchase could be an M6 to tow the yacht out...
There is the Nemesis wreckage in there but I was never keen on that ship's handling.
My goto tug-boat in previous games was a Dragon but I don't have enough Split rep to get it yet.
I think I used an Elephant first time round...

I suppose it's time I got round to buying a TS.
The shortlist is;
Caiman Hauler, Family Rhy, Cr 873,658 100m/s 5000-7000 XL
Caiman Tanker XL, Cho's Defeat, Cr 959,358 81m/s 4750-6650 XL
Caiman Super Freighter, Family Tkr, Cr 1,096,478 96m/s 4625-6475XL

That should be a no-brainer, since one of them is cheaper (accepts more tunings though, which might change the total price), faster and larger than the others.

Cargo compression would be the outstanding factor and so I need to determine the value of a cargo unit.
Hauler = Cr 175 per unit cargo
Tanker = Cr 202 per unit cargo
Super Freighter = Cr 237 per unit cargo

Next stage is to figure out how much compression that actually gives me.
Time for a save and testing...

Each Cargo Bay Extension gives your ship one unit of extra cargo. As for the prices, see this explanation.

Hauler; 5660XL Cr 990,148
Tanker; 5475XL Cr 1,105,808
S Freighter; 5460XL Cr 1,293,955

So yes at this point it is a bit of a no brainer...

I could account for the cost of the engine tuning (Cr 10,652) but that only gives us another 5 or 10 units of cargo space so not really worth it.

The cost of tunings is essentially an arithmetic series (except that rounding can and will mess up the math).

First cargo tuning is 14cr. The last (actually one past the last) is 1000cr.

Arithmetic series would be: N*(14cr + 1000cr)/2

Code: Select all

Caiman N Cost
Hauler 2000 1,014,000
Tanker 1900 963,300
SF 1850 937,950
As said, ingame prices should contain some rounding, but the base hull price differences are clearly larger than the variation on the (full) tuning.

Caiman Hauler was (X3R) my main workhorse and I was not very price-concious. Speed is life. Speed is profits. Being able to haul more than the NPC can typically offer is no real advantage.

More about getting as much as I can from a given hull before it becomes more economic to buy another.

In other news I just capped an LX.
I think I'll have to invest in an afterburner for the Mamba, hit & run works better at high speed.
If you'll excuse me I'catching up with a P.

edit: And its an ex-P 8% boron rep in a single furball. P, 2 LX, (1 capped) 2L, 4M

edit 2:  A K just dropped 4 gamma PPCs in front of me.
The Caiman Hauler is still on the other side of the galaxy without a jump drive...

Should've just ordered a basic Caiman from Family Njy and run it through to Thynn's Abyss when I spotted the PPCs...
Of course I can say that having spent a day at my desk processing transactions and running cashier reconciliations, didn't cross my mind whilst I was actually staring at the crate from my mamba...

Now that the plot is essentially done with,
Spoiler
Show
(I just need to pickup a ship that can do towing and then buy an Argon trading station, all just money really)
it's feeling more like an X game and doing more sandbox stuff.
I'll probably do a mass sell off of the various fighter wrecks I've accumulated, (personal ships and Xenon caps excepted) should boost my capital a touch more.

Or:
1. Jump to Caiman
2. Move JD and yourself into the Caiman
3. Jump to loot
4. Profitsss

One of the best features of these games is that after resolving a "situation" (well or not at all well) there is often a :headbang: moment of "Why didn't I ...?"

Well you wait ages for a Treasure Hunt mission and then two come along at once...
Little over a million creds on the first chest and 1.4 million worth of space flies in the second.
Couple more million and I'll head back to collect the yacht.
