SOLVED—X2: The Threat Audio Problem (with CAVEAT)

Ok. Got the game running... but the computer voice cuts out.

Windows 7.

All the other voice over stuff seems to work fine.

Also you may have to change away from 5.1/7.1 surround-sound when playing X if you have currently selected that speaker layout in your audio control panel. Quadraphonic or 4.0/4.1 works well with X games, especially using 'fill speakers' if you have the option.

I don't use surround sound at all. Just good old stereo.

This is a Windows 7 rig, and I've seen the many posts about codecs and such; but the suggestions don't work for Windows 7. The motherboard is an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 board...

The codec pack referenced won't install for Windows 7.
I don't have a way to re-order (give priority to) codecs in Windows 7 like you could with XP.

I already removed a codec pack to get the white noise sound to go away (referenced on-line on this site and elsewhere).

Here is my DXDiag Output

You have a RealTek onboard sound chipset but are using a very old generic MS driver. Get the Win7 x64 RealTek HD Audio Codec R2.78 driver from here.

It may be a 2 part process using the RealTek wizard: uninstall the old sound driver and reboot (you may be able to skip this step with that MS driver), then install the RealTek driver and reboot to use it.

I see an orphan MainConcept codec that you might wish to get rid of (if you can). They tend not to be X-friendly.

Good luck!

Which one:
High Definition Audio Codecs (Software)
or
AC'97 Audio Codecs (Software)

Regarding Mainconcept.

I don't want to remove the MPEG encoder. It's a pretty typical encoder.
And it's a video codec to boot.

Can you be more specific?

Also... how to remove a codec in Win7 anyways?

:D

Remember to set up the RealTek Audio Control Panel for speaker layout etc afterwards. Look in your bottom right desktop tray icons for the RealTek HD Audio Manager icon and right-click it.

Why would you want a MainConcept codec with no MainConcept/Magix applications? Unwanted codecs are usually removed using a driver cleaner such as CCleaner or CodecSniper - but don't bother if it worries you.

EDIT 2: Yes Adobe seem to like installing spurious MainConcept stuff for some reason. As I say, if in doubt or worried then keep it anyway.

One more thing regarding Mainconcept.

Looks like it was installed by ACDSee, my photo editing program.
I renamed the *.ax file and rebooted. Will test. And then if I have to, nervously install new Audio drivers.

Do not be alarmed by the Realtek double reboot, the first is to remove the old drivers, the second to install the new.

Ok. Problem STILL persists.

I installed the new HD Audio Realtek drivers (NO problems).
I ensured that stereo, 41,000 KHz, and 16Bit is selected.
NO 5.1 surround, etc.

NO sound effects. NO other fluff going on.

Basically went through the RealTek Control panel with a fine-toothed comb.

Still, the ship's computer voice is cutting out mid-sentance. She gets about one word out, and that's all.

All other in-game voice-overs work.

THEN.

I installed DirectX 9.0c components for Windows 7 (from another thread).

STILL the problem persists.

SO...

I have my drivers updated, DirectX 9.0c components for Windows 7, everything SHOULD be working fine.

X2: The Threat is the ONLY GAME I OWN that does NOT work.

Any suggestions???

Your set up, as you say, should not be doing this.

"Still, the ship's computer voice is cutting out mid-sentance. She gets about one word out, and that's all."

I am unaware of coming across this exact fault before. Usually the problem is a sound channel being always noisy, distorted or not working at all.

I am tempted to say it has to be a codec issue affecting that channel (because of the complete sound driver change), but I cannot see which one it would likely be.

This is solved but I need some time to type it all out.

In a nutshell...

Egosoft:
Because of the way you've distributed this, repackaged this, patched this, and the superbox stuff you've introduced?
You have about 7 different flavors of CAT and DAT files.

I don't even know if I'm using the right ones, but the game thus far is working.

I've never owned the CD version of this game.
I bought it from From D2D under the Enlight name. No idea.

But it worked.

Until I had to update my computer and it tried to activate all this crap online. And Gamespy is now defunct. They purchased D2D.

The CAT/DAT files from a clean install of this enlight version when patched to 1.2, then 1.4, then 1.4 NOCD (and 1.5 patch on this web site) is different than the stock game updated to 1.5 via your patches.

Even your own 1.4-1.5 patch is different than the 1.5 Superbox.

Oh my goodness... Learn some project management skills. You've let your game get away from you.

You have a total number of FOUR mutually exclusive 1.5 versions with different files.

Enlight patched to 1.5
CD Version (retail) patched to 1.5
Superbox 1.5
Steam 1.5

NONE OF THESE VERSIONS ARE IDENTICAL YET THEY SHARE THE 1.5 VERSION NUMBER.

MY GOD!!

To be honest, I have no !#@$ clue what version I have. I've had to beg, borrow and STEAL (not really), patches from here, CAT/DAT files from there, et al to get MY GAME running correctly.

If ANY MODERATOR wants to rebutt my statements, PM me your address and I will MAIL you a DVD with the different 1.4 versions. I can actually PROVE it.

After all of this I think I need a month off of even WANTING to start this game again (as much as I love it).

But COME ON folks....[/b]

What I will say is that I personally cannot see what any of that last post has to do with a sound speech cut-off issue not seen by others. However, if using cat/dat files from different sources somehow gets it all working for you then I'm glad to hear it and hope you will enjoy the game again.

I have no idea how fiddling with 3 different 1.4 versions and one 1.5 version got the sound to work, but it did.

I think...

so far...
