The specific crash you have experienced appears to be related to Steam not being able to initialize. The message box that appeared describes in more detail which particular issue you have encountered.
In rare circumstances this error can still happen. One user resolved the issue by switching to the Steam client beta branch.
Error Code 2: Failed to initialize Steam interface.
If you experience this issue, please contact us by mailing email@example.com with subject "DD-98986 error 2" and including the information requested below:
- Your DXDiag report.
- Your Steam logs.
These are normally located under [SteamDirectory]\logs
- (Optionally) Your Steam Community name.
Note that this is not required, but will help us analyse the issue with the help of our official contacts at Steam support.
The Steam update on 2015-01-19 contained a fix for this issue: "Fixed a crash preventing 64-bit Steamworks games from launching on older AMD processors"
If you still experience the issue, verify you have the latest steam-update installed. You can determine which steam version you have by running it and looking in the menu "help/about steam". If the problem persists, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org with subject "Startup error 2".
