X2 the threat doesn't load up on windows 8.1

Post by leethom » Mon, 19. Jan 15, 23:19

Hi,

This is my first post. I'm running windows 8.1 on HP 11 X2 laptop/tablet with 1.6ghz quad CPU and HD Intel graphics (integrated). 4GB ram.

I install X2 and it completes successfully. It's version 1.4 but on trying to start x2 it shows a black window and message "X2 has stopped working". I've tried the patches and running compatibility but the issue remains. Not sure if this works o windows 8.1 and hoping this can be confirmed or a resolution can be found.

Thanks.

How did you install X2? Did you copy the files, as described in this post? If so, are you sure you copied all necessary files from both CD-ROMs over?

X2 should work fine under Windows 8.1.

I've had X2 run on a W8.1 laptop. Can you post your DXDiag please? Is it a X2 install from Steam?

Thank you for your replies. I'll copy over all files as suggested and hopefully it will work. It's a cd that I purchased, both disks are there, 2nd hand not steam.

Tried this twice now and still exactly the same issue. It's really frustrating but I'm going to try again later tonight.

The version I have is 1.4 so I've not installed update 1.2 or 1.4 so I'll try that next. I'm guessing that copying each disc overwrites the content that is already there in folder "X2 - The Threat" and that you install the game first.

IF you are now sure that you have got all your installation and patches installed correctly but it still does not start, then try running the exe both as an administrator and in XP SP3 compatibility mode.

One thing that I recall, you must apply the complete latest patch *before* you ever try to run the game or you will load the old XP DRM drivers which will not work in OSs later than XP and will need to be disabled and uninstalled.

Thank you for the advise. I'll retry the install and patches this afternoon and let you know the outcome.

Hi,

I ran a new install then copied all files across, overwriting files if requested (bearing in mind my version is already 1.4 I didn't install previous versions on top).
Then installed . .
Artificial Life Update
X²: The Threat No Copy Protection 1.4
X²: The Threat Update 1.5

I then ran the app as Administrator and with XP SP3 compatibility.

The exact same issue was seen . . . a black window with "X2 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly"

Stumped now.

Have you ticked the box saying "ignore settings .." before you run it?

I hadn't ticked the box! I'll go through another run as I really want this game to work :-)

Still no joy :-)

Not sure if the problem could be related to the NT file structure so I'm going to install again on a different non-NT drive.

Not working still. Did a clean install on a FAT32 drive and exactly the same issue :-(

Open to any suggestions. I disabled antivirus and adware programs and ran exactly the install and overwrite with patches etc.

Hopefully there are some more things I can try.

Thanks for the help so far.

"I ran a new install then copied all files across, overwriting files if requested .."

That doesn't really sound like either a clean install (ie having manually deleted the previous attempt gamefolder and all its files before copying from the disks), nor very much like the directions in the thread linked above. They talk there of 'opening' the relevant folders on the disks and copying the files directly from there - there is no mention of any actual 'install stage' using the disks at all.

Also do all patches and updates before trying to run the game or you will load the DRM drivers and cause a crash on running them.

I think the game should be installed (copied) into Program Files (x86) and not Program Files.

Lastly, are you 100% sure that you do have version 1.4 on the disks and that you might not end up missing an update patch should you in fact have an earlier version? (Just double-checking.)

I stated in my earlier post that I assumed you had to install the game 1st! If this isn't the case then this would be the issue. I'm open to try just copying the cd contents etc. Gotta be worth a try right!

So . . . .

I uninstalled / removed previous attempts.

I created a new folder in C:\Program Files (x86) and copied all CD contents (disks 1 & 2) to this folder (contents of the CD \EGOSOFT\X2 The Threat

I applied the patches per the instructions from 1.2 up to 1.5 (in the order shown, with AI and no CD run)

I ran the shortcut created with XP SP3 and admin rights

Ticked the "Ignore last settings and start with default" . . . .

Exactly the same issue :-( . . . . Damn !!!!

I also tried the above but without 1.2 and 1.4 patches as the splash screen before game is supposed to start states my version is 1.4 . . . same issue.

I'll probably try a few different variations tonight to see if I can get this working.

I admire your perseverance! :)

You could look in Event Viewer for any errors reported for X2 at the date/time of your attempts. (Eventvwr.exe Event Viewer (Local), Custom Views, Administrative Events - look for critical errors or AppHang etc to do with X2 - you can filter/sort the list by date/time or level etc.) It may be that you are using a DirectX dll file version that X2 does not like (or perhaps are missing one that X2 needs) and the error reports (if any) may give a clue about that.

Finally if it seems insurmountable, and you are not anti-Steam, you can get Steam X2 downloaded for the price of a beer or two.
