3.0 Fighter escort for jump freighters

So I am wondering, if i assign 6 fighters to defense of a jump capable freighter and it jumps to trade, what happens to the fighters that do not have jump drives?

They will fly through the highways and die if they meet enemy stations or patrols

If you get the WWX mod they jump with the capital. This is vital for the reasons described above.
