Instructional Videos for new X players.

Post by Gosnell » Sat, 16. Feb 13, 01:30

As we all know the X series is a bloody tough game to learn, and many new players rapidly become frustrated at the games learning curve. Thus i have an idea,A series of short instructional videos,That explain the basic mechanics of the game.Hopefully getting stickied If the feedback is psoitive.
http://youtu.be/RGBfMU_Jlo0 Equipping Your Weapons
http://youtu.be/0IjONlKdvYc Weapon Information Explained
http://youtu.be/M_bEHF66HaE Covering Accelerating and Decelerating and the use of SETA.
http://youtu.be/xyttvJ9zsGI Docking and Undocking Manually.
http://youtu.be/rx2c2YUGcaI The Basics of Trading
http://youtu.be/I_de0PlzsGs Claiming Ships
http://youtu.be/RkW5LiAJJMg Asteroid Scanning
http://youtu.be/dnPbw9TPhCg Ship Information

So my question is do you think this is a worthwhile endevour.

You wouldbe a hero for me :)

I still learn a lot and I rather felt dumb asking about obvious things here on the forums :(

It's a great idea as there aren't many video tutorials out there. I would suggest working on things that are easily confusing to new players though, like how to trade and earn money, a run down of ship classes & weapon types, and general stuff like that.

In your video you showed something with the exception of SETA that is easy enough to figure out that it doesn't need a video, plus to learn that you have the flight school (which yes, is very very very basic, but teaches how to move around). Awesome start though :D

Video tutorials are a fantastic way to learn how to play the X series, that's why this definitive collection was produced. http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=297924

Are you trying a different approach?

The fact that people don't read about the guides is echoed by the fact that some don't ever read the Index Page, Rules, Announcements, Stickies, FAQs, etc, etc. The way the forum does its business now is meant to save every forum user having to wade past 3 pages of Sticky threads before getting to the community threads. It may not be the best and be showing its age now, but it is what we have.

Also I suspect that a simple forum Google (as recommended above by DrBullwinkle) for 'X3TC Video Tutorials' might have turned it up fairly quickly. Try it - oh yes, 1st thread hit!.

Circular discussion there - that is why DrBullwinkle thought it important enough as a novice learning need for you to make a video tutorial about it. I think he was right too. Maybe that tutorial could also quickly cover the forums available, Announcements, Stickies, FAQs and Guides thread, etc.

Alan is correct. Most forum users, and that applies especially to new users, have 'sticky blindness'. And adding more stickies for individual topics just makes people 'blinder'. IMO, there are already more than enough stickies and announcements on the main forum. Besides, if a new player can't already see the Ultimate Resource and Guides sticky, what makes you think they'd see a separate one on video tutorials?
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

I say stuff like this should be stickied.

Once again, it is stickied, in the form of a link from the Guides sticky thread. If we had a separate sticky thread for every useful set of information then the forum would rapidly become unusable. If people don't read the Guides sticky thread, then what makes anyone think they'd read a different sticky thread?

The stickiness question is now closed, and any further discussion of moderator actions on this issue will be split and locked as per the forum rules.

Keep going with the videos. :)
