I wouldn't. We can probably assume that most people who bought X3TC registered on the forums, if only to get patches, and last time I checked there are only a little over 400k users on here. Even if every single one of them purchased the game at £30, you're looking at a total income of £12 million (approximately €16 million)--not only do Egosoft not get all of that money, but not all of the forum members purchased the game, and those that did might not have paid full price!

A company that spends €15 million developing a game and then gets maybe half that back in revenue wouldn't still be here, simple as that.

You can also assume that many people who bought the game have not registered on the forum.

Edit: Think about it, how many game companies' forums do you register to when you buy a game?
I have games from many companies, and am only registered on this forum and that of EA. (EA only for tech support, very often needed..)

Germans?

I'm telling you, Sauerkraut doesn't nearly taste as good as everyone claims!

But 'Rotkraut' in combination with 'Grüne Klöße' and 'Rouladen' is par excellence!

You have to register on the forums to download patches for X3TC, and how many PC gamers run their games without patching them?

You might be surprised. . . quite a lot I'd wager.
I'm always surprised to the stats showing how many PC gamers use 10 year old GFX cards or still run Win98.

One of the X-games (think it was X3:R) was basically unplayable in its release state. For that one at least it probably valid to correlate registrations with sales.

Just want to throw in that the steam version will probably update itself without the need to have a egosoft account.

I don't recall needing to register for X3:R updates, I didn't get it through Steam.

As already said by felter, this does not apply to people who bought it through steam.

I just logged out and downloaded the latest TC patch just fine.

Some mixing up happening. To download updates no registration was needed, it was/is required for (some) bonus material.

Indeed, no need to register for patches as I remember. Either steam does it or you have to manually select the correct version. Well, at any rate, this was the case for X2... Wink.

As for the ballpark. I estimated 20 FTE over 4 years, I doubt that's the case in at least the first 2 years. Perhaps a bit more in the 4th. And as salary is the biggest factor, it's really a rough ballpark.

Still your view on revenues is logical and I had not thought of it that way. Then again I was distracted mid writing.

It certainly used to be the case that you had to have a forum account to download X3TC patches--I don't know when that changed. Steam does mess up the figures somewhat, you're right there; however, we know X is a niche game, so the number of units sold is not going to be anything close to, say, CoD4!
