Hi,

I'm on the verge of buying a new PC and I'm hanging on a thread whether to get a 3770k or a 3930k. One of the main advantages of the latter is its 6 cores (12 HT) and one major disadvantage is a much higher price.

I was wondering how well optimized X3 Rebirth will be for multiple cores. I know it will be optimized for multiple cores, but is it a single main thread with a few supporting threads or could I actually get benefit from as high as 12 virtual cores? Or has Egosoft managed to optimize their code so well that X games will become much more GPU dependent rather than CPU?

Thanks!

All we know so far (and all that Egosoft are saying about system specs so far) has been debated at length here and the latest similar thread is probably this one.

I guess you will find out more at the same time the rest of us do.

Cheers! Don't know why I couldn't find those topics.

While we're at it: Since it's been five months since the big debate and the game development is likely reaching a point where fundamental changes like these become increasingly hard; I hope the devs could find time to answer that it indeed uses 4 threads.

Thanks!

Bah. Specific numbers of threads are for chumps.

Real men MAKE threads as they're needed.

Hopefully the game will make full use if multiple cores.

X games have always been very CPU intensive (in order to simulate the thousands of ships/sectors etc with their jobs/scripts running constantly in the background), and being restricted to a single core made late game a problem for many (even for my latest computer which has just over 4.1GHz on each core, running many scripts and after many in game days, it could slow down).

i'm wondering how laggy this rebirth will be..
tc and ap suffer terribly with system lag when they have plexes in them..
with the proposed animated sections of complexes,
will this make it far worse ???

With the new modules system, you will need 1 station to produce different goods instead of spamming the area with stations and joining them through infinite tubes.

So logically, yea, the game will lag less.

I'm sure we will still end up with multiple stations; but as you said, due to the new modules systems, everything will be much more efficient (or so we assume Razz).

What I would really like to know, is if only a certain number of cores will work (i.e. it can only support up to 4 cores but no more).

All we have been told is that Rebirth is supposed to be much better at utilizing multiple cores than X3. Egosoft has not specified how many will be actually utilized.

This said, I'd probably get the 3770k. I guess Egosoft will want more than a few percent of PC owners to be able to run Rebirth, and I'd be willing to bet that they designed it to run older quad cores as well, including AMDs and Intel pre-Sandy Bridge.

Compared to those, the 3770k should have comfortable performance reserves (and you can put the price difference into a good GPU Smile)

Rest assured that the very first mod to come out for X:R will be a "triple everything in the universe!" mod.

Went with the 3770k, 3930k would've been 200-300 more expensive. If Rebirth needs more than 3770k then at least I have a good excuse to upgrade sooner.

My goodies
P280, Corsair AX750, P8Z77-V Deluxe, 3770k (with NH-D14), 680GTX, 16 GB Kingston HyperX 1866, Intel 520 240GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Green, some extra fans and a usb stick. I'm set, now where's my game! Wink

If you buy a SB-E chip for gaming you should feel bad.

... and if we carry on in that vein, we shall all feel bad in the Off Topic forum.

Multicore has been around since December 2005 when the Athlon X2 was released.

Multithreading is not a trivial task, even for developers that know what they're doing.

The latest thing now is Directcompute which is used by Civ V.

Egosoft is 6 years behind the times.
