The map system could use a major revamp for example a color coded system showing what governments control certain system and can change color when a system changes hands.
Also when you start off you have absolutely no references on which direction to go to set goals.
For example in X3 if you start off in Argon space you should have a good map of the Argon territory because for a back story you grew up in the territory.

i get where your coming from... if you grew up in an area you would know the area... thing is merchants would go where the profits are... same with teladi... so how many sectors would they have? it would take a good bit of exploring out the game... especially first play through

Realistically every ship computer would have had a map of the entire known gate system - maybe stations would be another story but still - how often do you see a world map with just the east coast of America drawn?

There should be an economic site which informs the player and affects AI telling you where to go calling for transporters, miners, fighters etc. where there are jobs and money to be made. This could also affect pirate AI and where and when to attack.

I think this is the big reason why they don't just give you a full (or near-full) map. It kinda takes away from the whole "exlporing the unknown" aspect.
That said, it would be nice if there was some kind of option to have parts of the Universe already explored. Perhaps you could find a cartographer ship wandering around, or something similar, and they would offer to upload a map to your system computer.
Or perhaps...
When starting a new game you have a checkbox that would say "Reveal previously discovered sectors", which would do just that: reveal any sectors that you have discovered in other saved games.

I fail to see why having the whole galaxy map revealed at the start of the game would take away from any exploring. Just because you can see the Red Wood Forest on the map doesnt mean you know what the area looks like.
Just knowing the name of a system doesnt mean anything.

I think the map will be decent, probably a 3D map that you can navigate around with the mouse.

You can always use a cheat pack and reveal what you want. Unless your too keen on keeping the non-modified profile.

Oh man, I love the non-modified profile.
Anywho... We can already buy maps, just they're too few and far between and they don't reveal enough.
I'd be happy if they just gave us more opportunities to purchase star maps for cheaper.
That sounds cool, doesn't it? "star maps" *gets all excited in a space kind of way*

I think not all sectors should be displayed.
Assuming there are still pirate, military and unknown sectors in the game, they should probably be kept hidden, at least until the player flies into the sector in his/her own accord.

You guys are forgetting that Rebirth is a whole new game. There's probably only going to be a few 'sectors' as we know them.

Things you can find on a map:
- Roads
- Highways
- Cities
- States
- Countries
Things you can't find on a map:
- Military bases
- Military fleet actions
- Gang territories and hideouts
- shops with the best prices
- drug dens

My thoughts exactly, which is why I always reveal all sectors using cheats.

There's an app for that.
Unless of course you're talking about paper maps, but who uses those?
