A lot of people suggest using the Humble Trader start and selling the Discoverer Scout you're given for funds. I like to use the Nostalgic Argon and use the Buster as a trader instead. Smaller profits, but it's much faster and doesn't take as long to afford more powerful ships. Trade space fuel in Herrons Nebula, one sector north of Argon Prime.

One more quick question - if you take on a ship, and apologize to police afterwards, are there any repercussions - ie will the race they belonged to attack you in future?

Thanks to everyone,
Alex.

As long as you apologize and do not attack the race whose sector you are in, then no there will be no repercussions. The reason this happened is most likely because you attacked a split in argon space. Argon aren't allied with the Split like they are with Boron but they don't take kindly to them being attacked in their space.

Depending on which races good side you want to be on, you can attack these in each races sector without repercussions... In fact you will get race gain with the respective race.

Argon space - attack Paranid
Boron space - attack Split

There is always,

Paranid space - attack Argon
Split space - attack Boron

There is more to it, but that is basic race wars.

Edit: Just reread your question and found that you asked if there would be repercussions for killing a races ships. Yes, if you kill Paranid in Argon space the Paranid will eventually kill you on site and you will be forbidden to enter their space. However, the Argon will love you for killing Paranid in their space and rep will go up. This goes for all I've stated above.

Just to add a bit more detail: If your goal is to capture the ship of a race that is generally friendly to you, and its hull gets really low without it bailing, DON'T kill it. Comm it and apologize. Everyone will turn blue again. Let that ship go and try another.

@Triaxx2 - I wish I had seen your post earlier! I just went back to where I started and had a nice surprise to see "Your Discoverer" - it isn't equipped with any weapons though - maybe I need to start the flight school to get those - or just pay for some.

It's certainly going better now, thanks to all on here who have helped.

As others have said, this game takes time. Remember that you can change the name of your ship and your character to make it more personalized.

Also, look up where to purchase a "cargo life support system".

That will allow you to do 'Taxi" missions where you take someone from one base to another in another sector... they are ludicrously profitable in the beginning compared to trading, so it is a good way to get you some good starter cash. Give it a few hours and you should have at least 1 million to 2 million credits.

Have fun.

X2 has a learning cruve so if for nothing else then that should be enough reason to buy and try it... You can have better understanding of the game.....

If you wanna love any of the X series then you may rethink your early position and think of the game is a chess. Always think forward and don't let failures stand in your way to try n try again. After all the whole concept is to use your imagination........

Yeah. A lot of people get messed up going to do flight school and not realizing that they don't have the necessary guns.

I think doing it in a Sabre is worse, because of the hideous size of the Terran sectors causing issues and the horrible inaccuracy of EMPC's against small targets.

One thing to keep note of, at least in my experience (Which is limited.):

You will likely hit a period in your play where you reach a hurdle. There are several of them, it seems. For me, the first true hurdle came at about the 50 Million Credit mark. I was working on quests and building stations and complexes, but I had difficulty in keeping a good account balance over that mark. As soon as the credits would roll in, I'd spend them on factories, ships or whatever.. (Right now, I'm idling at the 500 million mark. I just can't seem to get over the hump because I'm busy building a very threatening fleet of ships and complexes and infrastructure to complete one of the major plot quests.)

This is natural. You will go through different hurdles and phases of development in your game. At times, you won't have enough ships or you won't have the cash to build the complexes you need. You may even have to postpone some expansion in order to focus on profitsss. This is good. This is why the game can remain challenging for years.. Yes, for years. There are many players who play the same series of gamesaves for a very long time. And, there are just as many who burn through the game in a matter of months, then move on to a different start or decide to mod their game.

In regards to X3TC, which is all I have experience with, the game's play value can not be measured in hours or weeks. Most games say "40 hrs of play!" or "Games that can last for days!" In X3, games can last for years... It all depends on what you want to do. The X Universe is a big place and you can make it even bigger by downloading mods, starting under different conditions or adopting different play-styles. THAT is its true value. X3's appeal is its ability to provide the play experience that you want in what amounts to a 4X FPS Sandbox with RPG elements... A pretty hefty slice of pie for anyone's plate.

Anyway, just enjoy the hurdles as they come. If you get bored or stuck, adopt a different style of play for awhile. If you're looking for something "new" in your game, check out the mods. (If you don't mind getting your save tagged as "Modified" that is.) Lastly, even the veteran players don't know everything there is to know about the game and you'll see old-timers getting surprised pretty frequently on these forums. And, to me, that's one reason why this game is so appealing. Very Happy

When you hit the fifty million credit hurdle, try boarding.

Speaking of such, if you're looking for a good guide to all things X, try Nuklear-Slug's DiD's. Entertaining and the best game guide. PERIOD.
