How should I go about doing this? Should I make a medium sized one of my own and destroy it myself to prevent any sort of rep loss with other races? If that is viable to win the achievement what sort of Armament should I invest in? Any help appreciated.

Not to be a spoiler or anything but you can actually...
 |
blow one up of any race, or your own, either one... then quit without saving. Steam keeps the achievement but you lose nothing.

Surprisingly enough, even though the ownership is borked, you don't lose very much rep at all from destroying the SPP in Heretic's End. I destroyed it while it was under Terran control, and got warned about attacking Terran facilities (as if that's gonna scare me since I have captured two dozen Terran capitals and destroyed hundreds of their ships... ), but lost a tiny bit of Argon rep, about 10% worth at the second highest rank. Funny when you consider that boarding a capital ship will drop you 10 ranks, but destroying a XL SPP gets you the in-game equivalent of a traffic ticket.
The self-destruct option becomes available when you land on one of your own stations. Land, self-destruct, evacuate.

It didn't in TC when the achievement was rolled out.

I first tried buying an SPP and then blowing it up. No go on the achievement.
As luck would have it, I once did a build mission for the pirates... it involved building an SPP L in the Unknown Sector east of PTNI Headquarters for a 10 or 15mil profit. Cool. Then the stupid SPP goes red to me as soon as I drop it.
It became my target for the achievement. They blow up good... real good.

I was messing around in Senator Bad Lands, after setting the hub to Senator Bad Lands/Weaver's Tempest. I had a Complex with I think 8 stations including a Solar PP. I had decided to give that sector up as I was not getting the rep with the Yaki that I went there in the first place for. So I decided to change the gates and move on. When I went to "Self destruct" it just destructed the 'Complex Hub' then left all the other stations intact, so I had to do one at a time. I Self destructed all of them leaving the SPP to last, landed, saved then Self detruct on it. No go, no achievement. Reloded undocked blow it up, still no achievement. So as far as I can see, it has to be a NPC's SPP not your own.

You can always blow up the Goner one. No one gives a damn about them.

It does this so you can tractor-beam existing complex stations or destruct one of the group and put them back together. Otherwise it'd just nuke the whole complex.
