CTD: Exiting because of unrecoverable... Fixed by removing MainConcept codecs.

Hi all,

I decided to get back into X3TC last night and lo and behold, sometimes when I get into a fight I get a CTD and the Message:

EDIT: Happens all the time during Terran Plot (Patrol Omicron with your own wing)

Exiting because of an unrecoverable error
Error reading contents of File.

This is a terrible pain in the ar** Sadly I haven't found anything in the Forum that helped me. Thx in advance.

My Game:

Steam, newest version, modified (can't remember which scripts was a long time ago but i never had the problem before (with said scripts)) and maximum graphic settings.
PS: I have verified using Steam and get a green light

Firstly anything we try could be well off the mark because of your game modifications.

You do realise that half of your fitted RAM will never be used because of that x32 OS? See this thread.

Your graphics driver can be updated to Catalyst 12.2 from AMD updates and you can probably update your sound driver from RealTek updates.

If you can, you should get rid of the MainConcept codecs by uninstalling whatever application or codec pack installed them.

If your pagefile (which you will use a lot with a 32 bit OS) is on the C: drive then you need to clear more space and do a defrag.

If you need the codec pack but not specifically MainConcept codecs then you can remove them individually with a Win7 codec management tool or a downloaded tool like Codec Sniper (run as Admin). The MainConcept/Magix mpeg2 decoder called 'mpegin.dll' is a known cause of CTDs and other issues with X3.

Also there is a RealTek update for Win7 x32: R2.67 2011/12/16

Ok, So I got the newest version of ATIs CCC and that didn't help, got the newest SC drivers from Gigabyte and that didnae help so I moved the programs using MainConcept over to my backup PC and removed the Codecs (Although I didn't have the dll you mentioned) since then I've had 2 days of stable gaming. Alan, my thanks to your cat for hiring such excellently clever domestic staff. Cheers Mate.

PS @ Mods: How about a Sticky with a list of known Problem Codecs and a short HowTo on using a Codec removal tool like Codec Sniper. I found it very easy to use.
