I play XTC3 quite a bit. My question is, can I install XTC3 on a thumb drive and the switch between my desktop and laptop. As long as I play on one computer is this acceptable? If I can do this how do I do it with steam installed? Thanks

Just install Steam on both your desktop and the laptop. The only thing you'll need to transfer across with a memory stick is your actual game saves for general use which are stored in..
C:\Users\YourComputerName\Documents\Egosoft\X3TC\save
But for initial installation you might want to copy the whole X3TC Steam folder across just to save having to download the whole lot twice.

be careful it is possible for usb sticks to use a zip compression algorithm that can leave save game files with a modified tag

How about using Dropbox?
If you have internet available on both it is a much better solution than sticks.

I think you should be able to get away with having X run off the usb stick with steam installed and running as the exe only checks for steam running + logged in.
Or if you grab the steam free exe of the downloads section of the egosoft site, it'll be completely portable as long as the required 3rd party stuff is up to date.

Cloud support only works for a few games, and as far as I know X isn't one of them.
Best solution is to do as Nuklear-Slug suggests and install X3 on both systems, and copy your save files across as needed. Running the game direct from a USB stick will likely cause performance problems, and save files are a lot smaller to transfer. Dropbox was also mentioned and is very handy for this kind of thing if you want to use it.

william2407,
If you stick with your original plan to run the whole lot from your USB stik, can you please let me know how it all goes on this thread. I am also planning on doing something similar with AP but using the, 'get rid of Steam.exe', to avoid steam on the final computer altogether!

Congratulations Egosoft on increasing memory usage from 2 to 3 Gb.
Bin playing X too long when Egosoft refuses to sell you their latest game?

That isn't going to work. You still require to install Steam onto any machine that you wish to play on in order to register that machine to your account.
Even if subsequently you play offline, with a no-steam.exe, on a USB stick, you cannot avoid installing Steam on the machine you're running it on in order to carry out that initial register/authentication process.

So even though it's a NO STEAM exe you still need steam

Not sure why somebody brought up Steam. TC has a steam-free version after all. I have been running it and also AP from a flash device (extended slot that can be also used as USB) for quite a while. With steam you need to put the entire steam folder on the USB drive. First, install it somewhere on your hard drive because this ugly software actually checks during the install that it is not USB. After that just copy the entire Steam folder and run it from USB - it runs fine. Make sure you are online when you run it from the second machine first time, after that you can run disconnected. This is what I did to be able to run AP from my laptop.
Keep in mind that save games are still getting stored under C:\Users, so you will need to transfer them one way or another.
Additionally, ES just released no-steam EXEs for whoever is interested. I would think that you can copy the folder with those EXE and just run it on the second machine.

Kurush, the reason steam came up was in asking the OP to report back how his experiences went, it was important he understood both, the similarities of our plans ie. using computers and USB stiks, and the differences ie. use of the 'get rid of Steam.exe! This is vital so that william2407 does not waste effort emphasising the wrong details. Really Kurush, I would have thought a player of your formidable knowledge of game manipulation would immediately have realised that?
NUKLEAR-SLUG, are you stating that once the 'get rid of steam. exe has been used on the initial computer, that the game will not run without steam contact?
So the offered .exe does not do what it says on the can?
So you are saying ES are fraudulently selling AP on a false claim of what .exe does, ie. enable playing of AP on a computer without Steam?
Well I for one, DO NOT believe ES would do anything so underhand and dishonest!
However before I take this up in the correct thread, I will give you 24 hours to clarify your position!

Funny, in the other thread that is pretty much exactly what you were accusing Egosoft of. In fact you were quite happy to imply they were releasing trojan malware to infect peoples machines! Today however you think they're paragons of virtue and truth.... Make up your mind.
Schizophrenic postings aside however, I will take you up on your gracious offer to allow me a timelimit within which to clarify your failure to comprehend.
In order to play a game on Steam the machine on which you are playing MUST be 'registered' to your account. There is to my knowledge no limit on the number of machines on which you can play using your account, but each new machine MUST also be registered to your account. You CANNOT play on two different machines at the same time using the same account.
Since you are required to register a machine to your Steam account before you can use it that means that Steam MUST be installed on that machine AT LEAST ONCE.
Once you have registered that machine with Steam you may then copy the No_Steam.exe into the appropriate folder on your machine at which point you do NOT require to have Steam running and connected to the internet in order for the game to run. Just run the No_Steam.exe to play.
You could even, should you choose to do so, entirely REMOVE Steam from your machine and the game will still run fine. However if you do choose to remove Steam from your machine the you will NOT be able to receive any future updates or patches that may be released. If you wished to receive any patches that were available then you MUST reinstall Steam and reconnect to the Steam servers.
No Steam = no patches.
Is that sufficiently clear?

no_steam.exe is available for download so if you are curios on how it works well... download it *related to the above (2 posts) discussion*

Yep!
The plan is, hopefully to put Steam on an old laptop that is only used for storage. Then install AP and .exe, once clean, transfer by USB stik to main computer. Then possibly re-install Steam and game on the old laptop for downloads. I have little tech. knowledge, so have no idea if this will work, any authoritative views on this welcome?
By the way NUCLEAR-SLUG the suspicion of .exe, I raised in the RB thread was only there because you had said it would not work in an earlier post in that thread!
