Evolving several attributes at the same time is perfectly reasonable and
probably commonplace, but I really hope we don't split into subspecies.
That was first suggested in "The Time Machine." - the book not the
watered down film which followed it.
The author was quite scathing about how the upper classes had become
the beautiful but worthless Eloi and the working classes had remained
underground, tending the machines and keeping the former as cattle.
I know it's optimistic, but I would hope we develop the morality to stop
this happening.

reckon he was talking more of sociological effects, rather than evolutionary ones..
if the two are related in any way, it's probably a "cause-and-effect" thing..
one can only surmise a theory of evolution on a "grand" scale
by studying trends over thousands and thousands of years..
to think that this can be so closely related to events happening right now is taking a really long leap into conjecture..
- Wells probably just wanted to kick-start a debate on the matter..

For what it's worth, one of the first things to happen in speciation is that the two communities stop interbreeding.
It's hard to say how that would work out in a species that is fully self-aware, but my guess is that before we have complete speciation, we would have already have lost any sense that they other species was actually related to us.
By analogy: a normal human wouldn't even CONSIDER the possibility of mating with a chimpanzee. Despite genetic similarity, the difference is too great.
Now, a chimp isn't that closely related; but it illustrates the principle. Part of the speciation process would be a divergence of the sexual signals and interests to the point that interbreeding simply wouldn't happen.

There is a hypothesis that the human population that existed in the UK before the ice age that was wiped out had almost certainly speciated, since it had at least 150,000 years separated from other humans.
Unfortunately almost all traces of them have been literally scoured away by the ice age, so we won't ever know unless some highly improbable archaeological evidence is found.

Seems logical in theory, but I don't think there would be a real isolation of any group of humans as long as we live in the same planet.

Pretty much spot on, our physical evolution has essentially stopped (or at least its effects are dwarfed by artificial selection). Any problem that threatens our ability to survive and reproduce is beaten into submission with our brains.
The only things that might continue to affect us are things we can't beat, for example if we start spacefaring the lack of (or difference in) gravity is going to be an issue. As artificial gravity is unlikely in the extreme we might have to adapt to that one and similar.
As other have said another consequence of spacefaring would be a very large temporal and spacial separation of populations. This is will inevitably lead to differences evolving (its pretty much how modern races came about), just due to genetic drift, random factors and founder effects.
One area we have significant room to evolve in is in our mentality. In our heads we all all still apes living in small groups hunting and gathering. The fact our actual lives are not in tune with this mental state of being is pretty much the cause of all mental illness. Not to mention any number of horrid effects on society such as racism, sexism, xenophobia. . . etc etc, in fact almost anything nasty with -ism on the end.
Getting shot of these things is actually likely to give a selective advantage to an individual so evolve away.
Oh an on a depressing note there's increasing evidence that traditional antibiotics aren't going to work forever and new ones aren't at all easy to find. The bacteria may well win the race and then we'll be back to millions upon millions dying of sepsis. . . most modern surgery will be defunct due to complications from infection. . . then we'll have a reason to evolve physically again.

Split into two species, but I think that's a bare minimum. I think it's more likely that we'll become several, especially as it's well known that we don't tend to breed across races, making the "coffee coloured" humans extremely unlikely.

Oh hell, I was about to post some very similar arguments to those presented in those articles. They were my ideas and I was hoping that I was being more than a little pessimistic (as I am wont to do on occasion), but it seems as though people who actually research this sort of thing agree with doomsayer Bishop149. C**p.
The taboo against interracial couples is still incredibly strong. I've known a few and you wouldn't believe the amount of s**t they have to put up with. That's even in a relatively liberal multicultural city such as London. Its depressing.
I quite liked the bit in the "Forever War" where the ultra-facist Earth government decides that races are bad for the species and eliminates them all by disallowing any personal choice in mate selection . . . . everyone is a unified "race" in about 5 generations.
The point about our becoming dumber due to our reliance on technology is also one I really fear will happen. Technology is becoming more and more impenetrable to the common "man on the street". . . more and more of it simply can't be explained in laymans terms and its only going to get worse.
I think one of two things is likely to happen, the two class (engineers/ scientists and the masses) system described in the article will appear or our rate of progression will simply stop as no one is inspired to be a "thinker" anymore.

Regarding Tsar's scenario: the imagined split between the 'chavs' and 'your kind of people' exists already. When it comes to mating, men in the 'your people' group will still take a pop at the girls in the 'chav' group because, in your scenario, such girls are probably rampantly promiscuous. To put it another way: men will get it where they CAN get it.
The tech/understanding argument is interesting too. In theory people who understand tech can exploit it to their advantage. However, when something happens such that the tech fails then the advantage passes back to those with a bent for adaptation. I am sure there has been at least one sci-fi book based on this idea.
Personally I see the world getting much, much worse - the current ideological wars will drop away to be replaced by resource wars as the population continues to spiral out of control and resources dwindle. Those controlling the resources will have it their own way for a while but eventually the resources will reach a critical point where nobody benefits from non-cooperation. Perhaps that will be the last turning point of man, his less-than-triumphant swan song, or perhaps it will mark a radical shift in scoiety leading to a new style of cooperative species.
I'll be dead long before then so I don't really give a chuff!

most of our evolution will be tech based
with that, I can see us getting better at living longer, and communication
you could call it "immunities" and "telepathy", but it may not be either

I think (and it was already said in this thread) that we will actually evolve slower and slower as we no longer need to adapt to fit into environment we adapt the environment to fit us, people in far north have not grown massive fur yet, have they?
Regarding separation into more than 1 species? I'd say not in the closest future maybe at one point when/if we spread across the galaxy or something, regarding the taboo/lack of mixing between races, if anything mixing is getting more widespread than less, I mean people are moving from being very racist to becoming more and more accepting of each other, I'd actually expect some of the races to just get fully absorbed or die out than to evolve into different species

They might "take a pop" but it won't be mating, it will most likely be one off protected sex. Even if the odd one of "my kind of person" does make the odd "chav" pregnant, it's not going to stop the gap widening.

Maybe not complete isolation, but the odd bit of inter-breeding won't stem the tide. Evolution is about genes, not about individuals (hence self-sacrifice, benevolence, etc.).
