As far as I know (the instructions for the disc are not out yet) you can install whenever you like, but will not be able to play until you activate with Steam on-line.

Hi the old one,
I too am considering crumbling, I will however hold off until the 'get rid of Steam.exe' is available , as I do not intend to operate AP under Steam domination. CBJ reckons about a fortnight for this to become available, why they could not just stick it on the disk I do not know? Probably a step too far!
Good Luck mate!

I would say it probably might not be on the DVD because of the confusion two potentially different exe files on the disc would cause if used incorrectly or by mistake. I can see the Tech Sp posts even now: -
"I just bought X3AP on DVD and have activated it with Steam but I am not getting any Achievements even though I do the necessary tasks. What's gone wrong?"
"Why isn't my game being updated by Steam?"
etc, etc.

Good Thinking Alan,
It does seem obvious when you put it like that!
Thanks for bothering with such a rebel!
