Im newer to this game and I was wondering if there are any need to have mods or really epic ones?
Also, how would I go about installing them.

Play the vanilla game for a while. Once you know it, you will also know whether and what kind of mods you would probably like.
This Forum has sticky thread. They do have general hints about installing scripts and mods, but each mod should describe in its own thread how it should be installed.

The only thing I would recommend to newcomers is the X Rebalance mod. Makes fighters a bit more fun to fly, especially the M3.

I'm with jlehtone.
Not only does playing the vanilla game let you figure out what you don't like about the game, it makes it much more satisfying when you make the change.
Plus, even though I'm an adamant modder, I always think that people need to appreciate the game for what it does do right.

I wouldn't do this. The XRM is a Total conversion mod that rebalances almost the whole game. Without knowing the game without such a mod, you probably won't be able to fully appreciate, understand or even notice its changes. Also, just to make fighters a bit more interesting a Total conversion mod is over the top.

About the only thing I would do is use any of the graphical improvement mods and maybe a basic script or 2. No game changing mods or scripts so you can experience the base game first, as least for the first few hours or so.

CODEA is a good starter 1 (was my first script i used)
It dont change to much of the game, it just makes carriers more useful and less stressful. (also ships like TM's and M7's with fighter bays

I suggest you try my new soundtracks for the game. Makes the game a little bit more fun and epic.
