Introduction

Welcome to the XDownloads ULD (Upload -> Link to -> Download) project, this project is designed to do 3 things.

1. It may not be good looking but it keeps mods alive!
I bet if your a regular user of mods and scripts you will find that some of them get lost because of various reasons such as the mod authors doesn't keep his website running or it is a file host that deletes files after a long time. I will be keeping this going and keeping up with any egosoft releases.

2. A quick and easy file host
Modder's can upload to the website easily then link to the download directly

3. Be a once stop source for users to get mods/scripts/ships/programs.
There are many places where mod creators host there mods, these range from file hosts to their websites. So the only place which connects them is the forum, and you can easily get lost and we won't see you again .

As you can see three very simple points, but the simple phrase 'easier said than done' comes into play here.




My list of download hosts for X3TC

As always there are alternatives, but some of them have there drawbacks. Here is a list of 6 of the most popular download sites for x3tc including the XDownloads:

1. XDownloads ULD

Pros:
- Hotlinking
- No ads
- Huge database 1000+ downloads
- Covers all EGOSOFT games
- Can contain lots of information about each mod
- Using buttons you can quickly download the require mod/script/library or program within seconds for each download.
- Great search positions in google ect.

Cons:
- Need to register to upload
- Due to it size can sometimes be hard to find what you want.
- Upload Size Limit

2. Filefront.com

Pros:
- Don't need to register
- Can be well organised.
- Well known.
- Good in google search positions.

Cons:
- Lots of advertising.
- Slow.
- You cannot directly link to the file. No hotlinking!
- Doesn't always work.
- Your downloads get deleted if not downloaded much.

3. XMODS

Pros:
- Dedicated to X Mods
- Design looks very good.
- Good looking high image design compared to the XDownloads. But may not be as quick if it grows big. :/

Cons:
- Little bit slow at times
- Need to register to download / upload / view available.

4. XIA CORPORATION

Pros:
- Know to many x game players
- Got a good system for showing more information about the mod such as what text files it uses ect
- Multiple versions of the mod in one place


Cons:
- Rather clumsy menu system
- Don't see much in google search
- Need to register to upload
- Download links to the different versions of the mod get mixed up and is not always immediately clear which is the latest version

5. LV's collection of mods on googlecode

Pros:
- Great scripter that owns it.
- Good in google search positions.
- Usual google cleanness
- No ads

Cons:
- No structure
- Need to contact LV to be an owner so you can upload your mods
- Seem to need to go to the website to download a mod, no hotlinking?

Pros:
- Easy to find what your looking for
- Can hotlink files
- Very good search facility

Cons:
- Only designed for one thing, xsp ship downloads
- Need a account to add an download entry
- Looks a little outdated
- Hard to find the website (well I didn't get to it straight away when trying to search for it).

Linking to a download

You may want to link to a download so you can direct people to it from here or other websites. You have two options...

1. You can link to the download details page on the XDownloads ULD for example you get this: http://www.x1tp.com/root/index.php?option=com_jdownloads&Itemid=34&view=viewdownload&catid=24&cid=1167&lang=en

2. You can hot link directly to the download by copy and pasting the bbcode on the download detail page, for example on the page it may have this code:

I'm currently cleaning my web server, as over the last 3 years of building websites and mods I have collected together over 90,000 files and 20GB of data.

The xdownloads website is currently offline as well because of a corrupted config file, I tried sorting it but having some problems. This is what made me start to rework and tidy the server.

Changes (That I can remember):

• Published EmperorJon's Artificial Life Mods + provided a download for his unreleased mod after being asked to.
  
• Due to some mods being in different languages, I have added a clear language symbol/sign.
  
• Uploaded the next batch of download to be edited and published.
  
• Experimenting with a new menu bar

Changes (That I can remember):

• Edited all of the ai combat scripts
  
• Published all the ai combat scripts except 2
  
• Added armor mod to x-universe folder in total conversion mods
  

If your mods already on the website you can link directly to the file and use it as a mirror or main download source.

Changes (That I can remember):

• Uploaded, edit and published all the downloads in the personal combat scripts, seem to be the same scripters as before and a few inactive ones.
  
• The was one script in the personal combat category which more of a cheat so I moved it to the cheat category.
  

Problems:

• Strange one, there has been one mod that has been downloaded 2000 times in the last two days. I thought it might be a bot that has done it. So I looked at the IP addresses which downloaded it and most of them where not the same. I don't know why it is just that mod either. Not harming anyone so its not really a problem
  

There were two mods I could not get hold of, I could not seem to download them from filefront.

New files online, so far: In total [464 files] [206 Published] [9 awaiting permission] [249 unsorted and unedited]

Changes (That I can remember):

• Reworked the backend of the website, so it is a little bit easier for anyone to help me.
  
• Downloaded and uploaded 249 x2 mods and scripts, this took a long time . I have published them all atm without editing or sorting them, see here: http://x1tp.com/root/index.php?option=com_jdownloads&Itemid=6&view=viewcategory&catid=79
  
• Added a project management component to sort, keep track of the downloads that need doing.
  

Problems:

• Still don't know why the xu_graphics mod is being download that much, it is upto 3009 downloads. Don't quite no how to fix that.
  
• This project is getting to big for me to do alone.

• What's would I need to do
  
  • Edit each download individually, to include the following information:
    
    • Copy the information from the mods forum page and edit it to make it presentable.
      
    • Find / work out the original release date
      
    • Actually find the original mods topic on here as the x2 mods are going to be hard to find.
      
    • If the mod's author is still active and is either not given us permisson or is one we haven't contacted yet you will need to contact them to get permission.
      
    
    
  • Move the download to the correct category
    
  • Publish it if we got permisson
  
  
• Do I need any special skills like HTML or CSS
  
  • No not really, the website has go a few different wysiwyg editors which you don't need to remember any code. The website also recognises bbcode.
    
  • All you really need is time and to be able to use google, know your way around this forum.
  
  
• Is it very complicated doing this
  
  • Well if you see the list above you can see there is a lot of work and at first it would take you a bit of time to do each one. But once you have done it a few times it gets easier.
  
  
• How many people are you looking to help
  
  • As many as I can, because i've just uploaded 249 individual x2 mods which are going to take more time to find the information than just the x3tc ones
