"Where am I? What happened?"

"The Paranid killed you. We've brought you back."

"Who are you?"

"Friends. We'll give you a ship, and some credits. And a safe place to rebuild."

"The Fortune?"

"Hunted down and destroyed by the Paranid."

"Nothing left of my old life?"

"2500 Credits, and a Kestrel. We gave it some shields and guns."

"Great."

I guess my previous self wasn't so bright. I watched a log from a nearby ship, and saw myself go down in a blaze of flaming glory. Guess I shouldn't do that again. I slid into the Kestrel docked at the Argon Prime shipyard. I was lucky. Not really, I did get dead, but not everyone gets a chance to have a clone. Even the legendary Steve and Mak met their ends. But now I have a task and a goal, and a scary fast ship. Time to make sail and find port in the storm, don'cha know.

Assets: 1x Kestrel, 2500 credits.

Chapter One: Missile away

Honestly I don't know why I chose that title. I don't have any missiles. Not that I wouldn't like some mind, but there don't seem to be any. So, umm argh me hearties, I undock from the Shipyard, and prepare to explore. Instead I end up screaming because they said they'd kitted out my Kestrel. They didn't explain that they'd also maxed it's speed. So I screamed away from the station. The engine was well within it's limits. I was doing the screaming. I finally brought it to a stop, and called up the sector map. Nothing. Not a single mission anywhere in the sector. So I picked a direction at random and headed through the west gate. Ringo Moon held more stations and a few possibilities, but following other ships wasn't in my repertoire of functioning skills, and there were no assassinations needed. So I swung north into Cloudbase Northwest. No one there needed my band of merry marauding either. Passing into Herron's Nebula, I was starting to fear the universe was at peace and that I'd have to create my own fun.

Then I found a message suggesting I eliminate a target. Last seen in Red Light, so I whipped around and gunned the engines. West once, and south twice, and I was greeted with the sweet sight of my target. I slammed on the throttle, and raced up into position, and caught him with a burst of my PAC's. He screamed bloody murder, but didn't go hostile, instead he went evasive. Fortunately, he wasn't a very good pilot and could bring his guns to bear on my missile of a ship, so I made another pass.

I guess he wanted to bribe me with his ship, because he ejected. I let him get a bit away, so I didn't damage it and toasted his space suit. 1,997 credits richer, I ejected and claimed his abandoned Discoverer Vanguard. I took advantage of the repair laser in my suit and welded the holes in the ship closed, and sent it back towards Argon Prime. I climbed back into my Kestrel intent on exploring north of Herron's, when I was asked to patrol for Xenon. It was a good reward so I accepted it.

266 credits is not a good reward, because everyone else had the same idea, and I didn't get a single kill. This annoyed my employer. I considered blowing him to space dust, but realized I wasn't packing anything capable of doing it, so I left him and headed north from Herron's Nebula. I did manage to pick up the Discoverer left behind by a pilot who bailed after the Xenon shot his ship to bits. I sent it packing along to the AP shipyard as well. After I took possession of it's Fight Software, Mk1, and Mk2.

I went looking for a Paranid to pick a fight with, not feeling particularly pirate-y, and hoping to live up to my predecessors standards. I didn't find any, though I guess it's too much to hope for in Antigone Memorial. Instead I stopped at the Equipment Dock, dumped the Fragmentation Bomb Launchers in my cargo hold, which were doing nothing but taking up space and expending energy for no good purpose. I replaced them with a pair of IRE's and fiddled with the settings to make them shoot at missiles aimed at me. I didn't feel much safer, but I can out run most missiles that are a threat. I also nabbed a Duplex Scanner, and Mineral Scanner, and Trading System Extension.

Atreus Clouds yielded a Paranid, but this one wanted to pay me, so I didn't pick a fight. Instead I headed south scanning the Roid's he asked for. 10,000 or so credits richer, I caught wind of a station owner needing protection. I took the mission, went screaming to his aid, and got paid because the idiot attacker hit the station he was attacking. I note that Kamikaze tactics aren't very effective, and accept my payment.

At this point I checked my credit account and realized I had more than I thought. I called up my assets on the computer. I sold the Discoverer Vanguard that pirate had dropped, and changed my mind about the other. I sent it to the Equipment Dock in AP, and bought it some speed, and cargo and a Trading System Extension so I could order it to remotely trade without my intervention. I left it happily heading towards the Solar Power Plant in Power Circle, starting to supply power to the Distilleries in Herron's Nebula. I considered moving Fuel, but decided not to risk my only spare ship. I docked at the local Military Outpost, just after receiving an invitation to come to Omicron Lyrae. I decided to ignore it for now, having absolutely no idea where Omicron Lyrae was. Instead I bought a Triplex scanner, and somewhere to sleep that didn't go far to fast for comfort.

Chapter Two: Through Enemy Lines

Arrr... Now to some piracy. Or not. Indeed, I set out the morning with piracy on the mind. And after a few close calls, mainly evidenced by my fellow pirates, I felt today was not to be.

Instead I decided to hang around the edges and let others take the heat, while I collected the goodies. And goodies I did find. A Pirate Buster, and Octopus Vanguard. And more loot than I could conveniently carry in my Kestrel. Why, ye ol' Buster even had a Transporter Device for me to take for my own. Fortunately, I was in Elena's Fortune, a short hop, skip and a jump from Cloud Base Southeast. So there I took myself, purchased and fitted a Mercury and sent it to collect my goodies, while I took a 'roid scanning mission. All went well, as expected when doing it at 635m/s. Now I felt it time to make contact with my enemies, and make the allies I would need to engage my enemies.

Argh, onwards to Senator's Badlands, to recruit the Yaki to me worthy cause. Or so I started to do, when I was aligning along the north gate of Orebelt to buy a jump drive, and spied a bailed Pirate Nova. I swept in and snagged the booty, thinking to move up in the world. T'was packing naught but a single fighter drone and single 25MJ shield, so I held to me Kestrel and sent ye ole fighter to yon EQD in CBSE.

Me'self I headed north to Terracorp, put me hands on a shiny new Jumpdrive. One quick stop in Ore Belt for a bit o' fuel and I was ready for the Paranid. One slide west through CBSW, and I was into Emperor Mines. The Emperor doesn't mind though, because despite my pirate markings they paid no attention to me. More the fools they. I slipped like a shark through the waters, past their homeworld and it's powerful capital defenses, and reached the Edge of the Empire with naught a scratch. I took me careful notes of what I'd be to deal with as I sought my vengence, and slipped carefully through the Western gate towards my allies to be.

When what to my wondering scanner should appear? But a cached Paranid Enhanced Pericles. I fought down my piratical instincts to claim it and it's goodies, and then destroy it. Instead I opened fire upon it, destroying it, so that what ever three-eyed villain had thought it safe here would know it for false when they returned to retrieve it.

Laughing at mayhaps the questionable villainy of the act, I pointed towards the south gate, and raced through with a hearty yo-ho!

Straight into a very angry Pirate Dragon. I made a swift turn to port and raced away. As I ran I saw a ship I'd not seen before on my scanners. I turned again, intending to race to the south gate, but the Dragon was heading towards the prize I intended to claim. I swung back and in a dangerous and daring game, fired a few shots up the nose of the dragon as I flashed past. It worked, and he followed after me. Straight into the teeth of a Ryu. No retiring maiden was this pirate work horse and in short order it's Incendiary Bomb Launchers had made short work of the pirates who encroached on it's territory. I swung past it, and raced through the south gate. Fortuitously, the momentary diversion of the pirates saved me, for as I approached yon gate to allegiance, another Ryu appeared forth. If not for the Pirates, I might have tried the gate and become yet another smear on the prow of the great pirate ship before me. Instead I awaited it to clear the gate and slipped through.

Senator's Badlands, a place of true pirates. Indeed, one can smell the piracy in the vacuum. But by Loo Manck Strat, whence did they build a Destroyer? A glorious and welcome sight it was, for no do-gooding ne'er do well of a three-eyed Paranid 'hor'son shall sneak up whilst I conduct my business with these fine fellows. Indeed, they seem glad to see a woman of my caliber who comes to dock, and are pleased to sell me a TM. Though not so large in hangar as those of the peaceful races, it does have quite the advantage in loot storage.

Unfortunately, with pickings slim, I must sell assets to gain the necessary booty to buy this fine war machine. So away goes many a ship, and now I have my TM. But I know I can not undock it where I stand. I have offered a pair of mechanics who can get it out the doors, but some time will it take, and so I climb once more aboard my Kestrel and head north, to claim my prize.

An Advanced Eclipse it's called, and painted already in pirate colors it is. I receive word, even as I over ride the computer, that my Chokaro has finally been freed of the mooring, and is ready for me. I call it up on the computer of my Kestrel, and send it flying through the south gate to meet with my new ship and with my Kestrel. It leaps into action. At the stately pace of a mere 77m/s. Ah well, not every bird can be a mighty corsair. I order my new warbird to meet it's new home. It too launches into action so swift the naked eye has plenty of time to catch up at 58m/s.

I wait for them to meet while crying gently on the control panel of my Kestrel. Eventually though, they arrive within a distance of each other the computers agree on, and one lands in the other. I follow with my Kestrel, and then begin moving equipment.

As my father before me, I am a pirate, and cursed as well it seems. While my Kestrel can leap 4 sectors on a mere 25 energy cells, my great bird of a Chokaro can only jump one. Resisting an urge to behead things, I call up the computer and order my Mercury to head for Terracorp and buy it's own jump drive. An hour or so later, it leaps into my sector, fuels me, and together we leap out. My mercury heads for Power Circle for more fuel, while I jump to Argon Prime for some relaxation.

Or a few pints of Spacefuel.

Chapter Three: Boron Cruisin'

Say what ye will about them Yaki, but they shure knows the kind of luxury I like. A real capitan's cabin, and a real bed. After a night knowing I'm not only docked, but waking up safe behind my 200mj shields, I slip into the pilots chair, and thump on the docking controls, to break away. Ye ol' computer complains about undocking procedure, but I waits for no computer, and gun the engines, scraping the paint as I leave at full impulse.

Jumping my ship to Power Circle, I pick up a scan roids mission, which my Kestrel makes short work of, and then I find my self with another in Kingdom End. A fight breaks out as I swing through Menelaus frontier and when it's over, an abandoned Mako Sentinel is ripe for the taking and I take it. Into the third slot it goes and I head east, finding myself in Ceo's Buckzoid, watching the tail end of a Kha'ak invasion that's destroyed the Equipment Dock and ripped apart a few ships, leaving behind nothing but missiles, and a couple of disabled scouts. One I manage to claim, while the other... splatters on the shields of my Kestrel. Ah well, one is better than none. Deciding I'm pushing my luck for the day, I dock with the Trading Station and attempt to do just that. Unfortunately, there's nothing worth my credits. So I return to my Chokaro preparing to head east again, hearing of a Shipyard in Seizewell.

Chapter Four: Luck of the Pirish.

Heading east, I run into a Duke's Freighter. Hoping for a touch of luck, and perhaps a bail, I engage it in Amazon, my Kestrel.

Would you believe PAC fire really smarts with only a 5mj shield? It does. A lot. So a little wiser (the back is the dangerous part.), and after a quick repair laser blast, I attack again, this time sticking to sweeping attacks. After a bit the pilot goes down with his ship. Not even credit's for the kill. Which is a stiff considering my police license.

Nothing else excites me, but I turn south anyway. There, a very easy mission turns into a frustration.

Hitting a Harrier moving 300+ m/s from a Pirate Kestrel doing 635m/s is
not easy. Finally desperation forces me to call my Eclipse out. After a seeming eternity, HEPT fire manages to wing, then kill it.

Me? Oh, no recognition, fifteen lousy credits from the station owner, but not from the Teladi. Tight Wads.

Seizewell has a shipyard, so off goes the Mako, and the Kha'ak scout. Now I'm Company Helper 17%. Yay.

Northward, is Teladi Gain, and beauty greets my eyes. They call it a Phoenix, and one day I shall claim one as my flag. Operative Term? Claim.

East into Family Whi, where the simple act of replacing a SETA system, takes me up to Creature. Split are refreshingly straight forward. And Cute.

A return ship leads me to Mines of Fortune, and ups my rep, if not enough for an increase. I bet if I kill some pirates I'll bump it. An opportunity shows up, and I can't resist. Taking on a Falcon in an M5 is madness. But I do it. And I win. Not without help of course.

I guess the Split can't resist a girl in distress. Picking up jump fuel, I prepare to jump clear to Omicron Lyrae. It's been on my map since an offer to escort some VIP's, but I haven't had the cash, or energy to go there yet. I wonder. There are supposed to be Xenon there. Perhaps some of those ships will help my quest to kill the Paranid.

And Omicron Lyrae is right next door to two Xenon strongholds. I press the jump button with an expression of Malice.

It was while I played something less boring. I'd forgotten how unfun the starting can be sometimes.

And it almost did end. I nearly bounced off a Dragon. Or crashed into my own TM.

---

Chapter 5: Travels and Travails.

Apparently you can't cheat the nav system. Since there were no jump gates on the map, the computer deposited me at the nearest gate pair. Unfortunately, this was in Shareholder's fortune, which is a grand total of one jump away. Even as relatively nimble as a Chokaro is, it's hard to turn and having been deposited at the south gate, I had to turn around and go through. So through I went, continuing on until I arrived at th e north gate of Family Tkr. There, a Jaguar Vanguard sat, abandoned and damaged, but otherwise undisturbed. I jumped out, and claimed it, and considered sending it to the shipyard, when a brilliant thought struck me. I re-embarked my Chokaro, and order the Jaguar to run to Omicron Lyrae.

It worked, just as I planned. Until it slid through a gate, into a Xenon Sector. 472 I would later learn. There it reached the half-way point and got splattered. Still, it was much closer than I anticipated and it had filled in a station in Thyn's Abyss. I ordered the Chokaro to jump there, using the north gate, so as not to run into a Xenon patrol, and then slipped into the cockpit of the Amazon.

Undocking, I ordered the Chokaro to dock at the local trading port, and punched the accelerator. Racing across the sector, it didn't take long to reach the gate into the xenon sector. inside, i saw the reason the Jaguar had been destroyed. Lots, and lots of bright red contacts. Not a thing in the sector was fast enough to catch me though, and moving 635m/s meant that I could simply dodge around them and reach the far gate. PPC fire from a nearby ship the computer identified as a J, ripped through space as I pulled hard around and slid through the gate, throwing the computer-controlled monstrosity a universal hand gesture as I skidded through the event horizon..

I be many thing's matey, but stupid be not one of them, and I slammed on the throttle again as soon as I was out of the gate, racing south and west again. The circuit heads might not have understood the gesture, but I wasn't in the mood to take the chance. Two boring sectors later, I arrived in Omicron Lyrae, and promptly got a job offer.

I ignored it, picked up a couple of station defense missions, and bought, repaired and resold a Discoverer. Then docked at the Equipment dock to snatch up a Trade System Extension, so I could order a Mercury I acquired earlier to snag a Commodity Logistics System, and set up a pilot with instructions to refuel my Chokaro. Then I turned in for the night, planning to snag up a few Xenon raiders if they were kind enough to show themselves.

Chapter 6: Xenon Impasse

So, despite rumors to the contrary, Omicron Lyrae is not the Xenon Hive of Scum and Villany I've heard, and except for a proximity to the Sol Gate, there's Nothing exciting going on.

At all. So, linking up with my Chokaro, off we go. West this time, reaching Scale Plate Green just ahead of a Pirate group. While the Teladi deal with pirates, these must have been particularly hostile, because I got well paid for Dealing With them.

Amongst the wreckage, I pick up a dozen Space Weed, which, I succeed at bartering for nearly 50,000 credits. I figure I'll keep that in mind. Also from the fight, I land a Pirate Nova, and Pirate Elite, along with a a Teladi which punches out just as I arrive, leaving a Buzzard behind. Figuring to sell it at the Shipyard in Ianamus Zura, (My Teladi rep needs a boost, and nothing warms a Teladi heart more than trading.) All that stands in my way?

Xenon 347. Bugger.

Now me hearties, lest ye thinks me chicken-hearted, ye'll remember the trouble I had with Xenon 472. I'll not be thinking to get inta such again.

So, making my exchange from Valkyrie, the Eclipse, to the Amazon, I race towards the south gate, only to receive a call for help from the local Condor. They want help with a Xenon Fleet. I agree, figuring it's my chance.

Big, bad Carrier can't handle 4 M5's? Never the less, I pick off one, and overload the computer in another. An N, it's M5's designation, probably won't be all that useful so I purchase a duplex scanner, and follow it south into 347.

Then, running it by remote, from behind the North Gate, I race it past the first 3 Q's and nearly make it. But another Q hiding near the west gate tags it. M5's don't take to getting smacked with PPC fire, and it doesn't survive. But it's done it's job, and I escape just ahead of several gouts of PPC fire.

I wait, and let an OTAS Weapons Dealer go ahead, then slip around the Q blockade while they teach him a valuable lesson about both proper scouting, and proper use of the Jumpdrive.

South of the Eighteen Billion gate, in IZ, after calling my Chokaro to demonstrate the proper Xenon Survival Technique, which is Go 635m/s, then jump drive past it. I find someone wanting a Teladi M4. They won't let me buy one, but luckily for me, I already have one.

Which nets me the rep to buy one. Teladi are kind of odd. But, like Om Ly, IZ is dead of missions, and I don't feel like playing with the Xenon any more. So, I go west again, until I hit Montalaar, which has no west gate. A coin flip, which takes a while in a low-G environment, sends me north. There, I find I find two scan asteroid missions from the same factory. Unfortunately, no overlapping asteroids. Pity.

Several are in Aladna Hill, which leads to Akeela's Beacon. There, a strange traffic pattern attracts my attention. Following it brings me to a gate tucked a huge distance to the south of the sector.

On the other side, is the Mecca of Shipyards, and truly hideous design. Fortunately, the visual filtering on my ship has leapt into action, covering the ugly with asteroid images, before I can go blind.

OTAS has a Convoy in need of escort. Apparently, they aren't smart enough to put the jump drives they build on the freighters they use. So I spend, what seems forever guarding a convoy, obviously piloted by Monkey's. Every time any enemy contact pops up, a TM, along for the ride launches fighters, who then barely leave the launch pattern before the missiles I've fired kill their targets. And the TS's, in the only intelligent move, don't wait. Neither do I. I'm almost relieved, no actually relieved to get a notification of his destruction as the TS's enter the docking pattern.

They second mission is much easier. A simple station defense, in Aladna Hill. Then a Contract to return a Mako in Great Trench, to the Military Outpost. Fortunately, it's in good enough shape to be docked with my Chokaro, and jumped up to Aladna's in time to finish the mission. This bumps me up to Federation Marshal.

Just about then, OTAS calls me again. Do they think I have nothing else to do? Okay, so I don't, but I set a leisurely 100m/s pace getting back.

They send me to kill someone. Unfortunately, a Boron, not a Paranid. A jump to Aladna Hill to get details, then a jump to Montalaar. Flying yet another pain to hit Harrier Vanguard, and guarded by two Discoverer's. Between them, it takes the entire stock of ten Wasps, but finally they all go down. I dock at the Free Argon Trading Station, deciding I've earned some Luxury.

Chapter 7: Construction

Answering yet another call from the OTAS, I find this mission wants me to bring them things. And I'll have precisely 27 minutes to do it. 10xSilkworms? Check. 15xTempests? Check. 10xDisruptors? Che... Why can't I buy them? Rats.

Fortunately for me, I had collected a paltry number of 11 as I prowled the wreckages of battle fields. Feeling no longer inclined to do anything for OTAS, I rapped the Jump Button and skipped across the universe to Senator's Badlands. There I took several missions for the shipyard, including a pirate assasination in Ocracoke's Storm, and a Shipyard defense from the Paranid. I got a 'Promotion', to Unholy Nomad.

This nets me just over 5-million credits.

Jumping back to Legend's Home, I get a call from OTAS I decide to ignore fo the time being, because it's a 'follow' mission. And I don't like those at all.

Instead, I pick up a lead which asks me to transport a station. A highly illegal Space Fuel Distillery L. So, comming the local TL, which is a strange thing to be in such a heavily fortified system, but whatever. It docks at the Federal Argon Shipyard, and I'm glad of those Yaki missions, because Space Fuel Distilleries of any flavor aren't cheap. Fortunately, the payment makes back the station cost. In a moment of clarity, I buy a second hand Express floating around, and call the TL to go back to the FAS.This time I pick up a Silicon Mine L, I've heard Teladi version are cheaper, but for now, this will do, and a Wheat Farm L. The Express gets the jumpdrive from the Chokaro and some fuel, and leaps to Light of Heart and it's Equipment dock while I set up the Wheat Farm, and Silicon Mine, both of which immediately begin flashing bright yellow on the computer screen.

Ignoring that, I spend some more credits I can't really afford to buy a Mistral SF and Commodity Logistics software, then give it the jumpdrive of the just returrned Express to go tune up and come back. The Express is ordered to homebase at the Wheat Farm and then hire a CAG pilot. The Mistral becomes a CLS for the mine and farm, ordered to fetch energy cells from the power plants up north.

The CAG should keep the spacefuel factory, and eventually the Auto-Pillock Jockey in the Mistral SF should be able to fly without holding his... joystick in one hand, and pilots manual in the other, and he can supply the Distillery with energy as well. For now, buying energy on the cheap is his best bet.

Each station gets a million credits, leaving me with a mere 70K.

Okay OTAS, boredom, here I come....

Looking good Triaxx2 :D

How'd you manage to complete that first OTAS mission? I can never do that one even when I'm flying my Kraken.

I can't wait to see your full on revenge against the three eyes!

I got really lucky. Started in Montalaar, and the first group of enemies spawned right on top of the local M1. Since it was a lot of M5's, the Collosus was having some trouble hitting them, and it launched fighters.

The general confusion was enough that the TS's and I made an escape. One of the M5's gave chase and died such that the M1 was right infront of the second wave. Then we were out of the system.

So in short, pure, unadulterated luck.

And a TM full of Wasp Missiles, and a 100% fire rate. :D

Having very little good luck playing my Non-DiD games at the moment, so I'm not playing this beyond getting the asset list. That's why the slow updates. Don't want to end because of a streak of really bad luck. Such as shooting myself out of the sky with my own missile frigate.

You should be riding the favorable RNG not fearing it.

I know when to tempt the RNG, and when to just sit down and let it have it's way. And it's back on my side, so I'll jump back in later today.

Chapter 8: Huntin' 'Nid's.

OTAS wants me to follow an Argon Hermes in Akeela's Beacon. Screaming up north in the Amazon, I find my target. Who steps on the throttle, and slams nose first into the gate. Really. I couldn't believe it, but I watched him bounce off. Figuring that watching him go to Company Pride at 38 m/s won't be fun, I prepare to hit the throttle, and blow the mission. No need. As he re-aligns, the Boreas that occasionally patrols Aladna Hill comes through, apparently on it's way back to Legend's Home, and plows my target under without even slowing down.

Failing the Mission drops me 10% rep. I wait for the escort to clear the gate, then call for the Chokaro to come and pick me up. I jump back to Legends home, and decide to repair and sell the Nova while waiting for another mission. It arrives as I'm at 97%, so I finish, send it along with the space weed it came with, to the Federal Argon Shipyard, and climb back aboard the Chokaro. Now I'm on a station defense, for the SPP M, north in Akeela's.

Jumping the Chokaro to the West gate, I splash one bogey right away, and then I'm off in the Amazon, since the sky is full of M5's. 10 Wasp missiles later. (Apparently a Disco Raider can out run those.)

OTAS calls me almost as soon as I'm done, while I'm on my way back to the TM. I dock, jump back and shortly I'm on my way to Light of Heart to get the info on a contract. Idly, I note that OTAS has an awful lot of assassinations for such a young company. Perhaps there are some buried skeletons eh?

Anyway, it's a Pirate Scorpion, guarded by nearly a dozen M5's of various makes. The Chokaro hangs back, and I go in, Riding the Valkyrie. And slinging all 20 Wasp Missiles I'm carrying. I'll have to find a place to pick up some more. Wonderfully useful, but they go fast. And so does the Scorpion. M4's don't do well under a hail of HEPT fire, and he doesn't even flip red on the gravidar before he goes red and yellow in fire.

But for the moment OTAS has nothing for me, and I feel it's time to start my Paranid killing quest. A moment's work with the computer map shows the perfect place to start.

Hatikvah's Faith. Pirate sector, so no fuzz. Paranid to the South, Split to the North, Argon East, and Pirate's west. Sounds like an ideal hunting ground.

And it is. In spite of these, and these.

So the hunting begins. And it's not good at first. The 'Nid's seem to want to go down with their ships more often than not. Finally I find a strategy. I stake out the south gate, and look for ships heading that way. First score I find is a Perseus packing a Freight scanner. It bails, the first one today, and despite my insistence on not flying Paranid ships, claiming it is the only way to get the scanner, so I do, claim the scanner, the Trade Extension Mk2, and the left over Wildfire missile, then wash it from the universe in a green hail. A Paranid Freight Transporter in a Barracuda goes down with his ship, but not before leaving me two presents. a pair of Mk2 drones. Fortunately, HEPT is as capable of dispatching Mk2's as it is Paranid.

Then a Freight Transporter catches my eye. This one flying a Caiman. I hit it and get a surprise. Not only does it bail, but before doing so, it spew's crate upon crate of mass driver ammo into space. Still aboard, it even has a present, three SQUASH mines. I'll have to think of something to do with those. I send the BADLY damaged Caiman (HEPT really makes a mess.) to the Local Massom Mill, and get on with my mission. A Paranid in a Falcon decides to take an honorable way out, and tries to launch a Banshee while being pounded by HEPT. Needless to say, he doesn't survive the experience. I'm glad of the Valkyrie's thick shielding, because I was almost point blank when it went off, and felt nothing but a jolt in the controls. That might have been picking up the HEPT he'd thrown out when he blew up though. :D

Finally, OTAS calls again. I'm suspicious, and snag a defend station mission from the Massom Mill before I go. It turns out to be a lone Discoverer Hauler. It's no match for the Amazon in speed, nor for the Valkyrie in firepower. And the Pilot knows it. He bails the instant HEPT hits his shields. They're still intact, and I celebrate. For all of a tenth of a second. The ship is drifting to a stop. Which is still a pretty good clip for an M5, and I see it's heading for the station.

BANG.

(Where it says These, and These will be replaced by links to photo's, but dial-up and uploading don't mix well.

It's a Boron Ray, Split Raptor, Teladi Phoenix and Teladi Shrike on the Gravidar. There was also Cerberus, but it passed right through on it's way to Light of Heart, and I didn't snap a shot.)

Chapter 9: Singed and Stinged.

Yar, I know it not be proper english. But I be a Pirate. Sort of.

Today was a weird, and embarrassing day. First thing, I took a mission from OTAS HQ, but not from my OTAS contact. I was asked to Patrol for Xenon, and told it would be very hard.

I saw one L, it bailed, and was destroyed by HEPT fire already in the air. Then I get accused of not killing it at all. At least I still got some credits.

OTAS called. Defend Medium weapon forge in Aladna Hill. Dock to Chokaro, jump, kill schmucks, cash+OTAS Rep.

So I decide to step over to Hatikvah's Faith for a bit o' Paranid pounding. As you can expect, this is where things started going wrong. Again. First target, Paranid Freight Transporter, not hauling anything this way, but packing two PBE's. And I want them. Attack just as he reaches the gate. He goes hostile and turns on me. We duel, and I succeed in making him bail. Claim ship, eject goodies. Gravidar Contacts. Crap. Back in Eclipse, kill pirates, snag loot from Perseus, destroy Perseus. Nothing on the Gravidar except a Helios.

Definitely not picking on that. Did I mention I only got one of the two PBE's? And that afterwards I rubbed the dust off the weapons panel and saw it said PRG not PBE on the power connector? No, didn't think I had.

So with nothing on the Gravidar except for a big, nasty looking group of pirates, and none of the capital firepower from the other day, I turn for the Chokaro. But as I approach, a Paranid Weapons Dealer pops on the scope. I turn to intercept. Just moments from it, I hear the chirp of a missile warning.

Classic Tunnel Vision. Twist, pick it up, shoot it down. A mosquito? From where.... Oh, man. The Pirate group is right on top of me and too close to run. So I attack. I blow apart one of TWO Falcons in the group, and get BBQ'ed by two Novas with PBG's. Damn does that hurt. And boy do those shield numbers go fast. I turn and burn for the Chokaro. The shields continue to fall because I'm not fast enough. As I close range, the shields die. 3.5km is not nearly as long as it looks, but the Chokaro is fast, and has full shields and the Jumpdrive is already spooling as I turn away.

Safely back in Legends Home, the Com rings. Oh, NOW you have a mission. Assessing the damage, I've lost one shield, but fortunately I have spare and... damn! I lost one of my hard earned HEPT's.

This will not go un-answered. Or, it won't after I have the shipyard repair Valyrie from 79% hull anyway. For now, I run the mission OTAS asks, fetching some shmuck from a Cluster Flak Artillery Forge in Akeela's, and then a delivery mission. Which I'm able to complete through sheer luck of the draw. How did I end up with 16 Disruptors? Haven't the foggiest. Am I glad? Absolutely. I'm now one rank higher with OTAS.

So... do I get some rewards now?

Guess not. Take a Build Mission, wanting a Rimes M Factory. Hey, don't those? They do indeed require Delexian Wheat. Perhaps this will make up for my otherwise awful day?

Probably not. I do manage to flip a slightly over priced Buster, first stripping off it's fighter drones, and 3 PRG's. Now Valkyrie has a little more... What do you MEAN, only in the Turret's?

Deep breath.

Oh? Did I forget something? Oh, right, that Discoverer. It did indeed survive. With 10% hull. It's survived just long enough to be declared unusable scrap at the Light of Heart shipyard. But at least it was a positive cash in flow.

For now, I'm returning to the comfort of my nice, soft water bed in my Chokaro.
