is tnbt a rebirth of x2 in mmorpg format?

Post by julian-sama » Sat, 21. Aug 10, 16:41

i can see myself reaching for that ham radio in my x2 cockpit and ranting to my escorts to stay sharp as i plunged into and out of a gate to be ambushed by player pirates who plunders my ts transporter and loot while my tail gunner goes afk and hearing the pretended yet still harrowing screams and growls of my escorts as they curse me for the troubles for what my advance payment's worth before ditching me to fend for mysef, and as i hail a nearby titan for an assist i receive the all too comforting replies of 'lol n00b' before a deadly hail of newbie argon buster plasma fire rain down on me and the nonstop hailings and kami-kaze runs of the deadly newbies overwhelm me as the honorable titan dumb-fires wasps missle and laser missles at point blank range as a much needed fire support for me and soon i find myself drifting in the big void in my spacesuit watching my stores of argnu beef, now BBQ argnu beef in taxas moma's sause is shared and packed home between the friendly neighbors for their beautiful daughters and many wives. as i stumbled to the docking bay doors of a station and granted to dock, it opens and a newbie buster on behalf of the argon federation welcomes me aboard by dilligently running me over with glee as i was straggling towards the docking moors of the station interiors to save my game.

no sooner again i was transported back to my cattle ranch, as my tp transpot wiggles out of the station, i was greeted by the magnificient sights of a fireworks festival being held on the exploding hulls of my m0 battleship, a splendid grandeur by the ever generous teladi players to celebrate the 3-day anniversary of my ranch and solar plant business in red light, they spared no expences, and the radiance of the blooming lights, of orange and white soon lit up my solar plants and my m0, and of what aura, what beauty they are! and for days dozens of argon mammoths began pouring in with factories in tow and soon factory complexes are built around my ranch and helped increased my business deficits greatly with their appropriately priced resources, and thanks to the protection of their fleets of M2 Destroyers and gate blockades, pirates are no longer any threat, for the teladi players would always place my transports and bbq beef in their protectively destructive custody before pirates can reach them and do them any harm. and for that i am thankful.

it wasnt long before i broke the law; whist docking my ts i carelessly bumbed, abeit only slightly, into the station and i soon found myself in rehab center on argon prime before ban danna rescued me en-route to a prison planet, and we talked into the night on the argon one before getting 'that old buster' from him, and i start anew in the universe.

TNBT: Trust None But Toastie.

And if it's a MMORPG, I will refuse to play.

They will lose quite a bit of their fanbase if they release some sort of multiplayer game.

It is likely a multi-player game would be less successful than its predecessors in the short term. However, I reckon Egosoft aren't stupid and if they did release a multi-payer game then it would be because they found a way to make it work well and in a way that didn't alienate their current fan base.

Remember that a lot of their staff are players of the X series and so are in excellent positions to know what potentially could be attractive to their fan base before they go wasting millions of euros on a lemon nobody wants to buy.

Agreed.

Even though, how fun would it be if your small merchant fleet of 3 TPs, which you bought after countless hours of fireflies hunting and booze smuggling, were to be blown away in 10 seconds by that player who's been registered for 4 months and owns 1 Akuma, 1 Galleon, 30 fighters and an Hyperion?

Priceless(TM).

It's the reincarnation of Freelancer. But pssst, I didn't tell you that.

This x 1000%. I literally can't say this any better.

EGOSOFT struck gold with X Universe because it IS single player. I simply would not buy and play something that would keep me from ruling the Universe with an iron Vidar.

Can you imagine the frustration? How on earth could EGO implement a safety net in such an environment? By safety net I mean a way to prevent n00b crushers from stat crunching by annihilating n00bs... which unfortunately has been a valid strategy in most successful MMOs and is the reason that so many people actually LOATHE MMOs.

I thought it was MMORPG hating.

In this other thread Jonson27 quoted the words of an EGO developer that read as:
TNBT development has already been on-going since 2006 and it was always our intention to really reinvent space games for the better. So when reading feedback about Terran Conflict or Reunion now it unfortunately cannot easily be applied to TNBT.
Of course I'm just speculating, as are the majority of us, but if that's the case, that is to say, if all the massive wealth of feedback and experience they've been gathering with the X series along the years can't be used to improve this new project (which incidentally is still a space simulation), then it must mean that there's something radically different about it with regard to game dynamics that prevents them from being able to do so (MMO being the prime suspect that comes to mind...)
Of course, I hope to be proven wrong.

Most likely there hadn't been an X4 thread for 12 hours or so.

I think that TNBT will be an MMO, except without the multiplayer bit.

Which is what exactly? A MO (Massively Online) game?

I'm not familiar with that type of game :)

No, it would be an M because it would be silly to play it online.

M, the evolution of X.

I don't know what the obsession is with assuming that all games must be online to be very profitable. Games of X's genre actually do worse statistically when they are multi-player. All it has done according to history is add development cost and reduce feature sets. And do not compare a game like "Freelancer" to X. One is a limited combat simulation with liner controls to ensure it actually "works". The other is a multi-layered simulation with progressive "persistent" elements the player controls. X has more in common with games like Galactic Civ and Moo2 than with most flight/space sims.

TNBT will most likely be an entirely new IP with a new storyline built on what Egosoft knows that works. It will probably therefor retain it's persistent elements, its massive randomized environment, and it's 4 factor(think build fight trade). Egosoft isn't a "big" studio. They would be close to insane to waste manpower on a feature that is untested, untried, and largely unwanted by the player base that currently keeps them in business. If they wanted to expand to multi-player the best path would be via patch after initial release if the community pushes for it.
