Sector loading gets very slow as game progresses (as of 2.6 or 2.7.x)

Post by PQTaggart » Fri, 13. Aug 10, 19:28

Hi,

On my Lenovo T400 with an ATI HD3400 an 2GB everything is fine - including fps in complex sectors with gfx settings set to max (only "glow" disabled). Even seta 10x is pretty smooth in games with many huge complexes and the entire universe explored.

Just one thing is really annoying and keeps me staying in the same sector most of the time: As the game progresses, the loading time is increasing drastically when jumping from one sector to another. I don't mean the time it takes to load a save game - there I understand it takes >1 min to setup the whole universe. It's just the time it takes when jumping from one sector to another.

In a new game (e.g. Pious Paranid) it takes 9 seconds from entering the gate in paranid prime to exiting in emperor mines. But in a game with about 6 in-game days, 1.5bil credits, approx 300 stations and 100 ships it takes ages when jumping from one sector to another. E.g. jumping from Unknown Sector 10:16 (Dukes Heaven) to Unknown Sector 7:16 (Southwest of Unholy Descent) takes about 1:24 minutes :? although both sectors are nearly empty.
Interesting is: loading savegame=2:20min, jumping=1:24min, pressing alt-f4 takes 40 seconds until game really exits.

I think this was introduced either in 2.6 or in 2.7.x as before I never noticed such delays when jumping - not even on an older machine (Lenovo T60).

The game is vanilla 2.7.1
Wether "tubeless mod" is enabled or not does not make a difference.
Gamestart: Tormented teladi
Windows XP is almost a fresh install with Comodo IS

How big are your savegames? One common cause of problems like this has a co-symptom of extremely large savegames, and is caused by either a rogue script or script logging having been left switched on.

That's pretty normal, certainly less than the 100's of Mb some people with the logging problem report. Do you have an 'on-load' virus scanner active that might be trying to scan any files the game is loading?

Yes, I do have the Comodo Internet Security Suite installed (incl. Firewall and Antivirus). But afaik with a dual core this should not be a problem since one core could serve X3 and the other one the AV scanner.
I disabled everything but no improvement was noticable at all. I think if the AV would interfere, the delay would also occur to some degree with a new game. But there it only takes 9 seconds to jump from one sector to another.
Would it make sense to test one of my savegames?

As the T400 has a hybrid gfx chipset, I also tried with the native intel gfx chipset (in case there was a problem with the ATI) and with lowest gfx settings in X3. Unfortunately to no avail, it's still slow as hell when jumping between sectors.
Anyone would like to try my savegame to establish if it's the savegame or my local setup?

Sure.
Why don't you upload it somewhere and post the link (if no mod complains, that is)?

Lack of memory causing excessive swap file activity when jumping?

Try giving your video card 256megs of memory, total (no shared RAM). That will save all/most of the installed RAM for the game.

No, swapping is not an issue - got 2GB RAM, harddisk is rarely accessed. I would not know how to change the RAM assignment for the gfx card. ATI ControlCenter says it has 256MB.

The savegame should be available under http://rapidshare.com/files/413932552/X10.sav - if anyone could give it a try to load it and jump from one sector to another, I'd appreciate it a lot. (you'd also get some tediosly arranged complexes :) )

2GB is not actually very much, especially if you have a graphics card that wants a share of that. The game can and will use considerably more than that if it's available, and if it's not available then swapping may indeed become an issue.

Ok. I downloaded and ran the save.

The save took an inordinate amount of time to load. It took 50 seconds to jump and it took so long to close I opened task manager to kill the process.

Something is wrong with your save. Or so it appears.

I've seen X3TC use over 3.5GB all by itself on my machine.

Moving from a single disk to a RAID0 made a massive improvement in sector loads.

Not an option in a laptop, but Seagate are now doing Hybrid HDD with 4GB SSD and 250, 320, 0r 500GB rotary storage.

Quite tempted to get one or five for my various machines...

A simpler option is to get Diskeeper, or to a lesser degree, Defraggler.

A flawlessly defragmented drive also made a huge difference to my sector load speeds!

Oh no... it really is the save!
I grabbed an old save where all plots were completed (why the heck didn't I come up with that idea before ?). It loaded in no time and jumping from one sector to another took about 18 seconds.

Now, what to do? Is there a way that Egosoft can help? I already spent days at moving mines in ore belt and mines of fortune. Not to speak of nearly completing the hub plot. I don't want to start over again!!
I started this new game to cap the #deca that I missed before and to do a better factory and PHQ placement than in the first run. But doing it a 3rd time? no.. especially if there's a possibility that the same problem will occur again.

Could this have anything to do with the "tubeless" mod I installed? I thought this mod just has an impact on the rendering of objects and none at all on saves (as they stay unmodified). Or could buying 600+ TS ships and selling them loaded with Nvidium have anything to do with it? Or that I once ran over the 2bil credit limit on my global account?

@Shootist: Thanks for trying my save, that was exactly my problem too. I didn't end x3tc with alt-f4 anymore because it took 40 seconds. I always had to kill it with taskmanager. Your confirmation actually gave me the idea to try an old save.
@CBJ + gunman127: I always ran x3tc on a T60 before with only 2GB, had no performance issues at all (well, except for the weak gfx card). My disk is always perfectly defragged but thanks for the reminder. Interesting though that a RAID0 makes such a difference in sector loading.
@Terre: Thanks, I updated my installation.

Tried the save as well.
Took exactly 2 mins and 17 seconds to load the game, and about half the time to return to main screen...

What's weird is that x3tc.exe seems to become idle just after the savegame has been loaded from disk, for about 116.5483471 seconds (according to process monitor).

So your game is completely unmodified? never used scripts, cheats, or anything (except the tubeless mod you mentioned)?

As for that mod, I use it myself, and I don't recall it ever causing me problems... in fact, savegames created when it was installed work even after it's been removed, and vice versa.

By the way, I even tried stopping all the trade commands you had running and blowing all of your complexes up, (fun,) but no change.

p.s. what about framerate in those sectors where you have 200+ stations?

Thanks to all of you for your support so far, folks! I really appreciate it.

@de la Serna: Interesting that x3tc.exe idles around. I could not notice such a behaviour with my installation when looking at it in the task manager.
Yes, except for the tubeless mod, it's absolutely purest vanilla 2.7.1 with the latest bonus pack. I had Windows installed a few weeks ago and then X3. No scripts or cheats were ever added nor removed.
The framerate should be around 3-10fps when I look at the complex. When looking in another direction, it's well above 20fps (only estimated).

I think there's only one thing for me to do now: "EGOSOFT PLEASE HEEEEELP!!!"

If we can't fix this, I'll take it as a sign of Xaar almighty to stop gaming and start reading books again like all the other unholy creatures! - despite of my signature...

Go over to scripts and modding. If a save can be repaired, someone there will know how.

hmm, but my goal is to keep my game unmodified - and the board rules suggest not to do such a thing:

My final hope was that finishing the Hub plot would remedy my savegame problems. Unfortunately to no avail. I'm giving up now and will restart from scratch - the last time.

Darn, thinking about dragging around all those roids for hours.. :headbang:

At least I'll get one advantage out of it: starting with patch v2.5 gives me an indestructible deca and makes boarding easier again... har har
