I'm fairly (99%) certain about it. Any changes to the main universe/map file require a new start to take affect.

Swapping out dds files and changing the Tbackgrounds file can be done without a restart though.

We'll that depends.

Because right now I am using a Hubble Background mod and
another background mod on top of that and All I did was rename the CAT and DAT files.
and placed them in the same directory the .exe
is in within the main directory.

and I did not have to restart the game.

So it all depends on how he finishes the mod.

Tested with and old save and you get the backgrounds but dont get the sector changes, ugly at best.

That's what I thought. Anytime you change/edit the x3_universe file, you'll need to restart. Backgrounds and textures you won't.

Well, I guess this mod worth the new start! :)
Hopefully I started just several days ago, accumulated only 2 million credits... :(

BTW if you'll need a new start for this, when you disable the mod you gonna need to start anew too?

I really like the midnite blue sector. It's going to make a great screenshot with my heavy Dragon in there. All these pics look awesome; nice work.

The "pixelation discussion" was split out and moved to Off-Topic. May it be more fruitful there. :goner:

Its a WIP. Its a 300 Mb mod for the moment. Im thinking to use rapidshare or megaupload. Thanks for the offer.

Red dawn added. Taking some risk on color palette but i found this solutions very impressive ingame. The galaxy seems bigger, plenty of special looking places that one remember and want to visit one more time or avoid completely, lol.

I would use megaupload personally and size is no problem for me to mirror :) (and sorry I got this mod confused with another that just released)

I think it could not necessaily true. Last time dig trough dorector.xsd, and found set od commands that suggest (judging by their descriptions), that it would be possible to write quite simple MD script that could swap maps (backgrounds, planets etc) in existing game with new ones

I am not kidding.

I loaded it and there is:
<alter_sector>, params are: background, size, population, musicid, security

and second: <load_map>, description of it: "Loads data from a map file into current universe"

also there is whole set of commands like <create_planet>, <create_sun> and they might be useable - I think x3_universe.xml can be loaded and parsed as any other file. So, it seems doable. But never been playing with that so cannot be sure.
