Ever wanted to know which mission to do with what ship? Ever thought the difficulty that's advertised for each mission is just a joke? - Well I know I do. So I welcome you to my new Mission Guide... I must warn you, this is still a work in progress, so if you see any wrong information please tell me so I can change it. :)

Unless you are extremely sensitive to possible spoilers - if you are I suggest you stop reading now - this guide should be pretty straightforward for those who just want to know what they need for a mission and what they can expect.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Assassination Missions

General Difficulty: Can be extremely hard if you go in without the right ship and weapons.

These missions get harder as the games progress. They are in most cases Pirate or Yaki ships. So I advise not to do these if you are trying to build up a rep with them. Usually the description will have some sob story in it, but the objective is simple... find him, kill him.

What you will need:

- M3/M4 - early in the game and combat ranking low.
- M3+/M6/M7 - later on with high combat ranking.
- M1/M2 - with very high combat ranks - by vbruzual
- Jumpdrive - Some of the time limits are restrictive, so you will need to get there fast.
- Fair amount of sectors explored. If you are in an area you haven't explored much, then you might want to delay taking on the mission until you have explored at least 5 sectors around. Last thing you want is have to hunt down a guy in a sector you don't know where it is.

What you will find:

- M3/TS with some M3/M4/M5 escorts early on.
- M6 with two or three M6 escorts and some fighters later on.
- Many M6's and fighters - with way high combat ranking. - by cyberfuzzie

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Transport Passenger

General Difficulty: Depends very much on the time limit and if you have a jumpdrive.

Usually simple mission. Pick him up. Drop him off. Some cases you will need a TP class ship and they will refuse if you don't. Other cases an M5 will do just fine.

What you will need:

- M5 class with decent speed, size M cargo or bigger and Cargo Lifesupport System if they allow. - by dillpickle
- TP with jumpdrive, energy cells and Cargo Lifesupport System.
- Docking Computer, to save time - by brucewarren.

What you will find:

- Dock at the given ship and the passenger will board automatically. - Deliver him to the station within the time limit and you will get you reward. Deliver him to a Pirate Base and you will get a slave.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Return Wares

General Difficulty: I have not come across this mission in TC so I don't know.

As I said I have only seen this mission in Reunion, but if anyone knows more info about this mission please tell me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Return Ship

General difficulty: Easy in some cases, very hard in other cases.

This is a simple 'retrieve' mission you will need to do to find a ship, claim it and send it back to it's owner. However there is a twist to this mission favoured by many X-Gamers. You can claim it and NOT send it back... . The downside of keeping the ship in one of these missions is that you take a big rep loss, because it's considered stealing. Aborting this mission, even if you haven't claimed the ship has the same result and the ship will jump away if you haven't claimed it. Shoot it down... rep loss. Abort mission... rep loss. Crash into it and blow it up... rep loss. Keep ship... rep loss. Have ship destroyed by someone else...
Spoiler
Show
And you will receive a small sum of money and no rep loss!
Self Destruct will have the same effect as having it destroyed by hostiles. - by Nanook.

So choose this mission only if you seriously plan to finish it or plan to keep the ship and suffer the consquences.

What you will need:

- A fast M5 or a ship with jumpdrive and energy cells. Signature Override Software is useful but illegal.
- TM class ship with Jumpdrive and energy cells to dock the ship to when you've claimed it. - by Omini.

What you will find:

In the beginning of the game maybe a small M5 or M4 fighter.
Later on you can get as much as an M7 of M8! - Sometimes keeping the ship is better worth it than getting the mission reward.

Oooh, and if you fail mission
Spoiler
Show
you will get some nice sector police spawn dedicated to destroy it...
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Follow Ship

General difficulty: Easy... if you have the right ship.

This is where a guy offers you a mission to follow a ship that is a comapany rival or has stolen something. You have to find out where the ship is headed to... that's it. He will travel through a few sectors... fast.

What you will need:

- A souped up M5 or a ship with a jumpdrive if you have the patience and energy cells to jump from sector to sector keeping an eye on him all the time.

What you will find:

- A very fast M5, that is wary if you get to close. If you get to close... mission fail. Get too far... mission fail. So stay approximately 10-15 km from the ship with the ship targetted. He will dock at a station and if you have followed him to this point you will finish the mission and get your reward... that's it, you can go home now.
- Sometimes you will face spawned pirates or Xenon sent to protect the ship you are following. The ships spawned depend on the ship you are using. - by Spygo and vbruzual.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Transport Cargo

General difficulty: Easy, just make sure you've got enough cargo space.

Just a simple pick up and deliver mission. These goods are worthless, so do not expect to become rich trying to sell them... No other station will accept them anyway.

What you will need:

- M3/TS ship - other ships should be ok as well
- Jumpdrive.
- Energy Cells.

What you will find:

- Dock at the specified station and the good will be loaded automatically. If you do not have enough cargo space you will get a message saying so. - Deliver these wares as soon as possible and you will get your reward if delivered on time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Scan Asteroids BUGGED

General difficulty: Very Easy

Simple, just scan the asteroids as pointed out in the mission briefing.

- Mission has been pointed out to have a possible bug after scanning the last asteroid that the mission fails. - by Ulan Dhor
Spoiler
Show
After accepting this mission, keep an eye out for another pilot selling asteroid info and instant win...[/spolier] - by NovaCatt

What you will need:

- Any ship - M5 is best though - with Mineral Scanner installed.

What you will find:

- Go to each recquired sector and scan as many asteroids is needed. You will get paid quite a high sum for doing all of them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Escort Convoy BUGGED

General Difficulty: Head-slamming, fist-hitting, joystick-breaking, pain-stakingly, frustratingly hard.

I am serious. I hate this mission. It might sound simple, just escort the guys. Now it is not that you face enemies that are that strong... but they just keep spawning and every time a spacefly sneezes next to one of the ships while they are about to go through a gate they just stop, turn around and go back for another round. I am serious, don't do this mission unless you are trying to get annoyed with the game.

What you will need:

- An M3 or bigger fighter.
- Turrets set on Attack Enemies.
- A hell of a lot of patience, perseverance and time.
- RECOMMENDED: Do these missions OOS and you should have an easier time getting the convoy to actually move through the gate. - by brucewarren

What you will find:

- Stupid, stupid, stupid TS ships with weak shields and this dumb idea that every time they get shot they must NOT go through the gate.
- Fighter class ships that spawn every two minutes to come destroy these ships, and if they do you lose the mission.

This mission is only good if you like watching TS ships die or you want to boost your rep by killing off the attackers sent to kill them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Build Stations

General difficulty: Depends on if you have the funds and your own TL.

Buy factory. Build Factory. Get Money. Simple, but for some reason a bit hard.

What you will need:

- Preferably your own TL with jumpdrive and energy cells.
- Enough money to buy the factory.
- Have a decent rep with the race you're buying it from or you're not getting any factory from them.

What you will find:

- A beacon where they want you to place it. Place it anywhere else and won't be getting any reward.
- A nice, loooong time limit.
- The factory will become theirs when you place it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Destroy Convoy

General Difficulty: Easy, but watch out for those darn sector police.

Mission offered by various races to kill enemy ships. Useful if you are trying to improve your rep with them, but you will lose rep with the race you are attacking, nothing you can't fix with another mission for the victim race though. Find...Kill.

What you will need:

- M3/M4 ship.
- Jumpdrive.
- Decent rep with the race you are attacking or you will get yourself into some nasty trouble.

What you will find:

- A couple TS class ships, lightly armed.
- Sector Police on your back if you're not careful.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Deliver Matching Ship

General difficulty: Fairly Easy.

Just buy the ship they're looking for and deliver it to them.

Warning: Sometimes there will be two variations of a ship with both exactly the same name and it is impossible to know which one to deliver. So if the mission does not complete when you deliver a ship it could be because you have delivered the wrong one! - by Carlo the Curious

Warning: It is possible to get asked to deliver ships that are not actually sold at any shipyards. - by Roger L.S. Griffiths

What you will need:

- Cash.
- If the ship they are looking for is far away you might want a spare jumpdrive and energy cells to load onto the ship when you buy it to quickly jump it to its new owner or a TM with jumpdrive to pick up the ship and jump it back to its new owner.
- Ships with an S, M or L won't matter which one you get, they'll pay you for the value of the ship you deliver.

What you will find:

- Money for ship's selling worth plus a bonus. Make sure the bonus is worth more than the loss! - by kgkosio
- Ship will belong to them when you deliver it.
Spoiler
Show
In some cases the mission will ask you to deliver a ship to a shipyard that's selling the ship. So buy and instant cash!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Transport Passengers

General difficulty: Moderate

Simple enough. Same as taxi mission but in greater number. Usually for military troops.

What you will need:

- TP with Jumpdrive and Cargo Lifesupport System.
- A fast ship with size M cargo or bigger and Cargo Lifesupport System. - by dillpickle
- Docking Computer, to save time - by brucewarren.

What you will find:
- Dock and the passengers board automatically. Just deliver them to the station in the given timeframe and you will be fine.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Freight Scan

General difficulty: Easy - but make sure you have a Police Licence for that race!

Mission offered by various races to scan for illegal goods. You will receive a % of the goods you find.

What you will need:

- M4/M5 with Freight Scanner, decent tuning and Police Licence.

What you will find:

- Just scan everything you can find in the sector.
- You will receive a % worth of the illegal goods you find, but even if you don't you will get paid for each ship scanned.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Patrol

General difficulty: Moderate

Two types of this mission.

1) Patrol sector and kill everything bad.
2) Go along with Patrol group through certain sector and kill everything bad.

What you will need:

- M6/M3 is best.
- Decent shielding!
- M1/M2 - with VERY high combat rank and much later on in the game. - by Lord of Nothing

What you will find:

- Random Yaki or Pirate ships spawning in the sector. Careful! You will lose rep with them if you kill them. So if you don't want to lose rep with them, this mission is not for you.
- Random Kha'ak or Xenon ships. Not seen these before in this mission though. - by vbruzual and Omini.
- Handy mission if you want to cap some Pirate or Yaki ships.
- You will get paid for every ship you kill.
- Hostile strenth increases with combat rank. Expect many M1/M2/M6 class ships much later on! - by Lord of Nothing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Defend Station

General difficulty: Moderate to Hard

Defend specified station from Pirate or Yaki attack. Warning, you will lose rep with the Yaki or Pirate if you attack them.

NOTE: The equivilent corporate missions do not pay out for each target killed. - by Roger L.S. Griffiths
Spoiler
Show
If you leave the killing to a band of Sector Police you will still get a reward and not lose rep with the Yaki or Pirates!
What you will need:

- M3/M4 is fine early on in the game.
- M3+/M6 when things get tough.
- M1/M2/M7 - with extremely high combat ranks against possible M2's - by Geek.

What you will find:

- M3/M4/M5 Pirate or Yaki ships early on.
- M6/M3+/M3... yep things can get pretty heavy.
- M2 - In rare cases you might have to face an M2 if your combat rank is high - by Geek.
- If you accidentally make enemies with the station in question, but you finish the mission it will become friendly to you when you complete the mission.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Retrieve Stolen Ship - by vbruzual

General difficulty: Moderate to Hard

You will need to make the pilot of the specified ship bail so you can claim it or board for bigger ships.

What you will need:

- M3/M4 - smaller target. Don't shoot too much or you'll destroy him!
- M6 & TP or M7M - necessary to board the target.

What you will find:

- M3/M4 - smaller targets
- M6/M7 - bigger targets. You need to board these. :P

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Xenon Hold Position - by vbruzual and Roger L.S. Griffiths

General difficulty: Moderate to Hard (depends on combat rank)

Mission offered in sectors bordering Xenon Sectors. Defend specified station from Xenon ships. Good mission if you want to increase your rep without damaging any rep with another race or Pirate faction.

NOTE: For the "Hold Position" variant of this mission ensure that the sector is clear of regular Xenon patrols as killing members of the regular patrols counts against the mission ship count (even the patrol target is a lower class than the spawned ships). - by Roger L.S. Griffiths

Warning: Because any ship in the mission sector at the time is marked as part of the mission, if any of these leave the sector you will still have to kill them. However, YOU may not leave the sector or mission fail, so wait for someone else to kill the esaped Xenon or do it OOS... - by EmperorJon

- Taking these in conjunction with Xenon Patrol will earn you extra cash. - by EmperorJon

What you will need:

- M3+/M3/M4 - early on, with lower combat ranking.
- M6/M7 - later on with higher combat rank.
- M1/M2 - with extremely high combat ranking. - by EmperorJon

What you will find:
- M3/M4/M5 - lower combat rank.
- M3+/M6/M7? - higher combat rank.
- M1/M2 - many of these will spawn at extreme combat rankings. - by EmperorJon

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Xenon Patrol - by Lord of Nothing

General difficulty: Moderate

Same as normal patrol, but this time only killing Xenon. You will also only get paid for killing Xenon ships.

What you will need:

- M6/M3 is best.
- Decent shielding!
- M1/M2 - with VERY high combat rank and much later on in the game. - by Lord of Nothing

What you will find:

- Random Xenon fighters spawning in the specified sector.
- Kill all of them and you will get paid per Xenon ship killed.
- Hostile strenth increases with combat rank. Expect many M1/M2/M6 class ships much later on! - by Lord of Nothing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Deliver Wares - by Lightning4

General difficulty: Varying

Mission offered by all races (except Xenon and Kha'ak obviously) to request a certain number of a specific ware to be delivered to the station.

What you will need:

TS (with jumpdrive)
Several TS (all ecquipped with jumpdrives) - with higher rep and trade rank.
Complex producing the ware - only in extreme cases where a massive quantity is recquired.

What you will find:

- Greedy, pompous mission giver.
- Number of wares needed.
- A varying time limit (hence the varying difficulty).
- Your reward will be paid after all the wares have been transferred.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Station Hack

Offered at random Pirate Bases to hack a hostile station within a limited amount of sectors to become neutral. No rep loss for doing this, but costs a bit much.

- Offered at Teladi Stations as well. - by cyberfuzzie
-You need to be within 3 sectors of the hostile station to be able to hack it. - by NovaCatt.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Buy Asteroid Information

Buy the yields and locations for the listed asteroids for the specified amount of money. Simple, pay the guy, get the info.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Buy Sector Information

Offered randomly. A guy will say he has information for a few sectors. You can pay him for the whole lot, or just for one specific sector. Be warned: It will not reveal the whole sector. Only where it is and a few stations will be revealed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Buy Used Ship

Buy ship for specified money. Ship will be listed as % of hull left intact and money you need to pay for it. Keep an eye out for rare ships such as the Hyperion that are selling these and you might find yourself a bargain.
Spoiler
Show
In some cases, you can find a 100% ship that you can sell for a profit at a nearby shipyard. Instant profit! (Emphasis on SOME...)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Buy Blueprints

Buy Blueprints for you HQ to save time reverse engineering them. Keep an eye out for rare ships that have their blueprints for sale. HQ recquired. - by tidurlagi

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nice guide.

I'll add that for ship returns I recommend using a TM class ship with a jumpdrive. I made a post on it here.

Good post dragon, just a couple of comments:

- Assassination missions: You can even get capital ships (M1, M2) as targets with high fight rank if they are not pirates.

- Retur wares: Not sure what mission you mean. If you are talking about the deliver ware missions, they are very straightforward, you just have to provide the required wares (ecells, food, etc.) to the requesting station.

- Return ship: There are two kind of these missions, return lost ship and return stolen ship. For the return stolen, you need to make the pilot bail (for small ships) or board it (for big ships). These are generally harder than the regular retrieve lost ship.

- Transport Cargo: These are generally quite difficult in higher trading ranks. The time generally provided is just a few mintues. And not all wares are 1 volume. Some are 2 or even more.

- Escort Convoy: Generally agree on what you said, but I've not found too much trouble with them. If you kill the attackers very quickly (with the help of missiles) the escorted ships won't stall too much.

- Destroy Convoy: They are not only offered by pirates and yakis, all races can offer these missions, generally to kill a convoy of their enemy race.

- Patrol missions: Not only pirate and yaki can be spawned, also Xenon an Khaak

Oh yes, almost forgot. In Patrol or Protect missions there's a chance that Xenon will appear as well.

They've appeared for me in a few patrol missions. Might depend on combat rank (Militant), but they can definitely show up.

Transport Passengers - The first one you mention an M5 - it has to have M size cargo space for passengers - Discoverer, Kestral or Fujin (and variants).

The military transports (the ones that have a credit sign) don't need a TP, any ship as long as it is M size cargo or above, has cargo life support and enough space will do.

Oh, and don't forget Xenon Invasion missions. Those are a special case of Defend Station missions, only offered in sectors bordering Xenon sectors where xenons ships enter through the gate and generally want to destroy the station offering the mission (military base, shipyard, EQ dock and trading stations)

Please give a more detailed description, of what you have to face and what you need and a bit of background info. Just so I can make a more accurate description of the mission. :)

As I said, it's just like a defend station mission, only that Xenon are spawned instead of pirates and yakis and they are only offered in sectors with a gate to a xenon sectors. Spawned enemies depend on your fight rank, among other things, just like regular defend station missions.

They are normally named "Hold position" or something like that.

In the Follow Ship mission, sometimes after a gate or two, the guy you're supposed to follow will send some Pirate M5s through the gate to cover his back. I'm not sure if it depends on Fight rank or anything, but it seems to happen especially often in the early game, or maybe it depends on your ship's class. This may be a coincidence, but it seemed to happen this way every time I took a Follow Ship mission in the Boring Boron start.

I think this is only when you get to close and he gets worried.

In Defend Station missions, if the attackers are yaki and combat rank is high, you might get M2s, which are a more serious threat to you and the station. I would recommend using a ship larger than M6 in that case.

Also, watch out for Deliver Ship misions at low trade rank and/or difficulty, you may get less money than spent (ship price, upgrades, etc).
You still get rep for completing it though.

No, actually Spygo is right. I've always seen some enemies spawned just after the target goes through the second gate. And they depend on the ship you are flying. If I'm in my Hyperion, there's always an M6 with some M5 escorts, if I'm in my kestrel, only M5s are spawned. Normally they are pirates, but I've seen xenon spawned from time to time.

It's not coincidence. I had the same experience. If you concentrate too much on disposing those ships, you will fail the mission.

One comment on "Scan Asteroids" missions: There is a common bug that the mission automatically fails after you scanned the last asteroid, regardless how much time was left. My game has this bug, and I cannot do these missions anymore.

Yes I can recall these. In the mission objectives it usually says something like:
  • Destroy: Xenon Ships
    + Protect Station
Or something.

To my knowledge, I recall reading somewhere where if you are in an M6, the biggest ship you're going to get in missions are M6s. If you're in a M7 or higher, they start coming with M1s, M2s and M7s in response.

I am sure to get Akumas while taking a defense station mission in an M6 and Crusader rank.

As a general rule, ships spawn based first on rank and difficulty, then for higher difficulties, player properties are take into account.

Return Ship

General difficulty: Easy in some cases, very hard in other cases.

This is a simple 'retrieve' mission you will need to do to find a ship, claim it and send it back to it's owner. However there is a twist to this mission favoured by many X-Gamers. You can claim it and NOT send it back... Twisted Evil . The downside of keeping the ship in one of these missions is that you take a big rep loss, because it's considered stealing. Aborting this mission, even if you haven't claimed the ship has the same result and the ship will jump away if you haven't claimed it. Self Destruct... rep loss.
Nope. Self-destruct is the same as if it was destroyed by hostile action. Not only do you not get a rep drop, you get ~10% of the reward as compensation. This is the best option to use if you find you don't have enough time to complete the mission. Especially useful in Terran space where you can't use a jumpdrive and distances are so huge.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

There is also a specific patrol type:

"Patrol against Xenon activity."

A patrol, but it always spawns Xenon.
Note also that this kind of patrol will only pay you for Xenon enemies killed.
Skirnir. No counter-argument possible.
