What Buck_Rogers DiD. (Now a `join in` game!)

Post by Buck_Rogers » Sat, 28. Nov 09, 23:45

Hi guys

Just wanted to write this to try and gauge what, if any, interest there would be if I was to post a DID here?

I've already started it, and as of now have a dozen or so chapters written. I just needed to know if the hype surrounding DID's (no names mentioned. NS) is just as strong as it was before?

So, I would be greatful if you could let me know if my publishing my exploits would be worth it

thanks

I like the odd DiD story or two, but I tend to only stick with the ones that stay vanilla with interesting rules. I find DiD stories with loads of scripts installed a little awkward to follow unless the writer explains what script changes what. So basically what I'm saying is if you explain your rules then I can tell you if I'll probably read or not :D

Pics are also a must IMO

Holy argnu! :o That's a lot of scripts.

But I'll probably read your DiD if it's interesting/funny.

Yup & they all work. I did have more, but I narrowed it down, as some created huge problems (Pirate Guild) and others I considered too cheating (Gonar Map Service)

Edit: alot of you will probably consider the Mass Driver Ammo Generator a cheat, but I only have that incase I decided to put it on a squadron of ships. I wont be putting it on my own. Also, it will only generate a max of 5 boxes anywayz :D

What's the actual difference in using scripts or not?

When the purpose is to tell a story then a good story is a good story.
Whenever the Star Trek writers need a reason for the protagonists to get in trouble, they often enough invent some new technobabbly gizmo to meet those demands.
So what?
In a story, reality is only limited by what you can tell convincingly.

And if you need a script or AI pilot to be smarter than it actually is (or break down), by all means invent the feature as you go.
If you don't, the story will be predictable because the capabilities and reactions are all known. Predictable stories are not good.

Buck_Rogers wrote:Edit: alot of you will probably consider the Mass Driver Ammo Generator a cheat, but I only have that incase I decided to put it on a squadron of ships. I wont be putting it on my own. Also, it will only generate a max of 5 boxes anywayz :D
I wrote a script to generate ammo for AI ships because all too often they would be completely out of ammo before ever coming in contact with the player.
Then they'd be pretty harmless and it makes no sense, that AI ships would have no way whatsoever to get any ammunition resupply.

Just one of the little fixes for the suspension of disbelief.

And whether it's 1 box or 5 doesn't matter if it keeps generating 1 box over and over.
My complete script download page. . . . . . I AM THE LAW!

I have to agree with the above post :D . A good story is one thats entertaining and has some humour to it, some people like the use of scripts/mods and others don`t however. I for one will be really interested to read this particular one as i used to have X3:R a long time ago but sadly i have it no longer :( , so a DiD game/story will be fresh for me.

I will also go along and say i will be one of the first to put in my application to join the ranks as and when the application criteria has been posted.

Good luck and may the DiD Gods smile on you !! :D

P.S if you can make this work with that impressive list of scripts/mods, then kudos to you..

Nice response Gazz, I like it lol. That's 2 interested parties.

Baring in mind, I'm not as good a creative writer as a certain other DID author is, but rest assured I'll give it a good go.

So screw it, I'm gonna put my DID up!

This should be fun!

1. New Beginnings

So here I am, parked in the middle of..............of.............where the hell am I? *checks ship computer* Oh. Herrons Nebula. Anyways, here I am in Herrons Nebula, with nothing but this lousy Mercury and a Disco to show for my worldy possessions.

2. Hard Graft part 1

Nothing much going on in the X Universe today. Hardly seen any other ships. Although that's probably due to the fact I don't even have a Duplex Scanner onboard yet! I did see somone though......

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00021.jpg

*Sorry above pic is quite poor. was still getting used to Irfanview!*

A Rapid Response Centaur MkIII. Now, you would'nt want to mess with that brute would you! Would've liked to have seen it's armaments, but without a Freight Scanner or Police Licence, I'll have to leave it for now. So I think I'll put one of them on my wish list. Wink

Made my way down to Ore Belt, to start trading E-Cells from the XL SPP based there. I've decided to ship em to Cloud Base South East for now. Lots of hi-tec fabs there looking for energy. Got a couple of trips under my belt before something interesting caught my eye on the BBS. A mission to deliver 150+ Alien Artifacts from the PPC Forge in CBSE, to the Computer Plant in CBSW. There was a time limit of 1 Stazura, 43 Mizura, but it did'nt come close to running out. Chalked up 8k for the delivery plus 2k bonus for being fast. If you can call 75 m/s fast that is! WOOT!

3 Hard Graft part 2

Still Trading in the Mercury, I found an ad on the BBS that I just could'nt pass up. 13k for Info on 9 Argon Sectors including Omicron Lyrae. Should save me some time exploring them anywayz. After that, it was a quick trip North to Terracorp HQ for some much needed Engine Tuning. After all 75m/s is just not fast enough! Razz

Then back South for the old E-Cell run. After 1 particular jaunt to the Medium Shield Complex in CBSE, I found another lucritive BBS message, asking for an urgent delivery of E-Cells. 3090 needed, paying 20cr per cell in 17 stazura, 3 Mizura. How convienient!! Cool So 61800cr for the cells, plus 25k for the delivery later and thank you very much! Glad there was an XL SPP in Ore Belt though.

On another note. I 've also found a station belonging to the Hacker Community, also in Ore Belt. That will come in handy for dropping of recovered AI's and bailed pilots. Chance of some decent rewards there, hopefully! Oh and I also came across this...

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00022.jpg

Although, quite what a Terran Rapid Response Vidar was doing in Ore Belt is beyond me! Perhaps the Argons are short on patrol craft? Meh, whatever.

Just after finishing the BBS job, I decided to take a break from trading myself. So running up to Herrons Nebula I picked up Inferno, packed off Happy Hauler to do some MORT'ing and set off to explore a bit. So heading North to Kingdom End I buy a Triplex Scanner and maximum Engine Upgrades from the fishies. Then I turn East and head for Teladi terratory to buy the Explorer Software, which will turn Inferno into a good scout. I then continue East into Family Whi, when, upon exiting the West gate, the proximity alarm goes off.

Oh Crap!

Nice screeny, i did`nt realise that the Terran were in X3:R :o , but then i only did the first 4 or 5 missions from the start of the game as an Argon, so i would`nt have really done any real exploration.....

Great job on the BBS mission tho :) .... damn cliff hangers

That's the right attitude for getting things done. =)

The only thing that's bugging me about many such stories is the ever-repeated recitation of all ships and ranks.
The fight/trade ranks are pretty much inconsequential and those that affect the game - the race ranks - are a bit bulky to write out in their entirety.
Does it really add so much (or anything at all) to the story or would it not suffice to shorten it to like... one line?

Something like
a Cr, b capital ships, c fighters, d civilian ships, e stations.

*Disclaimer. Please note, all credit for the RSLG manouver must go to NUKLEAR_SLUG*

4. RSLG

Frantically scrambling at the controls to bring up the sector map, I quickly spot the reason the alarm sounded. Straight in front of me is a group of 5 Pirate ships. 3 Falcons, 1 Nova and 1 Buzzard Vanguard. Eek!!

Time to try out the universally renown'd RSLG manouver! in other words, Run Screaming Like a Girl! I set the auto-pillock to dock at the nearest station, whilst I keep an eye on the bad guys. MOVE!

As I watch I discover I'm in no real danger, as luckily for me the Pirates are pre-occupied with an attack on a Family Whi Tiger. Who seems to be having some trouble dealing with them. Although that quickly changes when a 2nd Tiger jumps in. Namely a Split Rapid Response Tiger. Things are then quickly sorted out and the Pirates go boom quite quickly. I managed to get this before the last ship (the Nova) was destroyed.

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00023.jpg

That was the Nova on his final attack run.

All of the above happens before I can dock, so I cancel the procedure and take stock of my surroundings. I notice the Pirates have left some presents in the form of a couple of missiles, so I make a beeline for the crates and scoop them up. Selling a salvaged Firefly and Tempest missile at the local EQ dock makes me a nice 8k ish. Well, better in my pocket then messing up the trade lanes! Just after this, I notice "Happy Hauler" has come across a discarded Dragonfly missile in Home of Light. So I quickly order it to dock at Terracorp HQ and grab the Spacial Command Software. A quick scoot across the sector to grab it, and a quick re-dock at Terracorp later and its sold. And "Happy Hauler" has half his Cargo now maxxed out.

On through the East Super Gate into Shareholders Fortune, I come across a sector info ad on the BBS. 7 Teladi sectors mapped for 3601cr, nice! Onto Mines of Fortune next, where I pick up a Teladi for a factory inspection tour. Only end up visiting 3 stations, which gets me only 900cr or so. But I'm still new at this, so I have to start small I guess!

Meanwhile, "Happy Hauler" is still busy lumping E-Cells and Ore from Ore Belt to Home of Light and CBSE.

Heading through Famiy Tkr, I notice I don't seem to be welcome here, as I am denied docking rights. Meh, no matter. Onto Tkr's Deprevation, where I am surprisingly allowed to dock. I use this to my advantage and max out Rudder and Cargo on "Inferno" at the local Trading Station.

Exiting the gate into Ghins Escape, causes me the execute another RSLG manouver due to the proximity alarm screaming at me. Once again my luck holds though, as the sector map reveals a Pirate Base, 1 Pirate Buster and 1 Laser Tower minding their own business! I decide I'll take a break at the next sector, so its into Thyns Abyss. Exit the North gate, move south toward the station silouettes at the centre of the sector and................

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00027.jpg

Crap! Crap! Crap! Sould've seen it coming really, with all these Rapid Response units apearing before the Xenon do!

Nice screeny
I really suggest to use another program to convert from bmp to jpg or another format. One where you can decide which quality.
Because the quality of those is pretty bad (30kb for a 1024x768 shot is toooo small)^^ A fast &free tool you could use is IrfanView (allows batch-converting) -very handy

5. Escape from the killer oversized hard drives!!

After a while sitting in the local Trading Station, I decide to take a peek at what the Xenon are up to. The Rapid Response ships sent by the Split seem to have done their job, as there are no red blips on the Gravidar. So, I set my target sensors onto the West gate and quickly find out why there were so many if them banging on the door, so to speak. Thynns Abyss borders Xenon Sector 472.

EEK!

Huge dilemma time. Do I back track and try a different route? Or try and navigate through the it? Well, with me feeling all brave and that, I decide to cross it! Or should I say try to cross it. I did'nt get very far though. Exiting from the East gate, I turn to get a bead on the South one. Low and behold there are a horde of Xenon between me and safety. Figures! So I RSLG it back into Thynn's Abyss. Guess I'll have to try another route.

Meanwhile. I have had "Happy Hauler" chug up to Queens Space, where there are 4 SPP's located. Including another XL one. This should help get the profits in much quicker, as at least one of the SPP's should have a nice low selling price.

After looking at the universe map on the local trading station, (or in other words, downloaded from thexuniverse.com) I find another route worth exploring, which should help me get a bit further South. However I am going to have to contend with another Xenon Sector. So heading North again, I end up back in Ghin's Escape. I then head East through Hila's Joy and on into Ocean of Fantasy. Next its South to Family Zrt, then east again into Zrt's Dominion, where I dock at the local Trading Station to gather up my courage for an attempt at crossing Xenon Sector 598. (A large Argon Whiskey should suffice!) However. The mechanical morons once again decide not to play nice and stick a huge force between me and safety! Stupid machines! So, it's another RSLG maneouver back into Zrt's Dominion. Not before getting this pretty picture though:

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00031.jpg

At this point I decide I've had enough being chased by ships with auto-pillocks for brains, so I start the long trip back to Family Whi. It's about this point that I check up on "Happy Haulers" progress again and strangely enough I find it has stumbled upon this in Menelaus Frontier:

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00033.jpg

A Rock Beetle? Hmmmm never seen those before. Wonder if they are worth anything?....................That's for finding out another time perhaps. Right now all I want to do is get away from these bloody Xenon! But guess what? I think they want to be my friend!

Heading for the West gate in Ghins Escape I see this come through.

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00034.jpg

Not too much of a problem. I can just hold back till the J moves off, then nip through the West gate.........Yeah right!! The Xenon have other ideas though

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00032.jpg

(You can only just see the pointy things of the second J, sticking out from behind the monitor. Just wish I had remembered to switch off the HUD!)

A second J comes through! Christ is there no escaping these bloody overside hard drives? I decide I'm too close to pull an RSLG, so I floor it for the gate. Although the J had already spotted me anywayz and was starting to throw what looked like PPC fire at me!

Oh bugger!

6. Busy, busy, busy

Whilst scrambling at the controls of "Inferno", I thank the stars for having a fast and manouverable ship underneith me, to keep from becoming PPC food and make it through the gate!

PHEW!

Would've liked to have hung around to see what salvage I could grab. Considering I was almost caught out, I think I can live with myself for missing this aftermath, this time!

On my way back to Family Whi, I come across the most ugliest ship I have ever seen!

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll3/ ... n00036.jpg

Man, that thing is UUUUUGGGLLLY!

After stopping in Family Whi for a much needed rest. I once again consulted the trusted Trading Station Universe Map, to consider my next move. I also consulted the BBS and found this

Since I don't condone the use of Space Weed, or Space Fuel (except for the summoning of Dutch courage!) for that matter. I wont be taking this offer up. Even though Swamp Plants are perfectly legal. All is not lost however, as another potential money making route has popped up in the same area. There are 3 Flower Farms in Teladi Gain and 4 Sun Oil Refineries in Greater Profit. Nice! So I get "Happy Hauler" to motor over to Teladi Gain, whilst I check the BBS for more jobs. 2 factory tours net me a couple of k, but apart from that, not much else happening in Family Whi. So I decide its time to travel again.

I head South towards Pirate terratory, but all seems quiet. Untill I hit Thuruks Beard. Checking the Gravidar as I enter the sector, I find a couple of Pirate Nova's having a go at the local police force. They do a pretty good job at fuzz bashing, but in the end they are overwhelmed. I'm about to close the sector map and carry on, when I notice somebody left me a present. One of those Unknown Objects is floating amongst the wreckage! So I haul arse over to it, before anyone else does and........ker-ching! I am 80k richer! Thank you very much!.

Onwards into Hatikvah's Faith. Which proves to be surprisingly quiet, for a Pirate sector. Thankfully! Then Docking in Aladna Hill I find another BBS ad to map 12 Argon sectors for 12k, before continuing South into Rolks Legacy. I then turn West and make for Trinity Sanctum and Paranid terratory. Upon reaching Trinity Sanctum, I turn South until I enter Ministry of Finance. Here I dock for a bit at the local Trading Station. Whilst docked I notice my Teladi rep has climbed high enough to buy myself a Teladi Company Licence, which I gladly do. As it will come in very handy later. Also whilst docked, I get this delivered to my message box:

:o So, so glad I did'nt hang around Thynn's Abyss!

About this point, I decide to take a break from exploring, but 1st set the auto-pillock to dock at the Shipyard in Argon Prime. At least that will map several Paranid sectors on the way there. Whilst the computer does it's job, I concentrate on getting "Happy Hauler" to remotely "haul" in more credits. :D (You see what I did there? lol)

Upon docking at the Argon Prime Shipyard, I 1st check the BBS and come across a nice delivery job for a fellow member of the Merchants Guild. 43 Crystals to be delivered back to the same Shipyard in 33 Mizura's. It takes almost 4 trips, but I manage it with 23 Mizura's to spare. Mainly thanks to the Crystal Fab also station'd in Argon Prime. So chalk up another 47k for me. On an interesting note: Whilst in the process of docking, I notice I'm following a Mk I Centaur. setting my target sensors on it, I also see it is badly damaged. Less than half it's hull is remaining. :o He must have been in some scrap!

That Centaur got me thinking.

"Why should I be the one taking all the risks? I'm the owner of this business, it's time I started acting like an owner and got some people in!"

So, looking at the BBS, it appears as though the RNG gods are smiling at me today. As I find just what I am looking for! A Universe Explorer. Or to be precise, a level 19 Cartographer by the name of Na t'Pst. Complete with his own Octopus Vanguard. (A Split Gonar flying a Boron ship! lol) All for 53K. So I immediately hire him and set him off. Although not before he tells me he is off to the Argon Prime EQ Dock to upgrade his ship!

Typical!

I hope this is worth it!

If players have been playing vanilla for the duration of the games life so far quite a lot. I can relate to N-S's games because he plays them vanilla... a level playing field.

Now Gazz, if you stopped farting around making amazing pottery and made your own mod like XTM (scratch that, because I hate XTM - singular vision makes the best games; communities make towns, not games) now that would be interesting. Somebody playing to your vision of what the game should be, DiD? Now that is something i would like to see. I would like to see that a lot.
