that depends if you want to play the plots or not.. tbh pick a normal game start and fly away as when you start the game starts except Tormented Teladi and Poisoned Paranid you have the option to fly off and do what you want as this is what i did as i plan to make my credits and get high ranks before doing the plots

Someone asked this very question rather recently. Posted this and no-one applauded... 
Tough crowd. Anyway:
Talk to a Boron named Mahi Ma, he will do his best to drive you insane,
Talk to a fighter called "Exterminator", give the Kha'ak a world of pain,
The Goners have need of resources and aid,
Work with the Terrans can be exceedingly well paid,
And that is just for starters!
OTAS and Plutarch, Strong Arms and Terracorp,
Yes, that is just for starters!
Duke's Buccaneers and PTNI, Jonferco and Atreus,
Yes, that is just for starters!
If a riddle is your thing a treasure hunt awaits
And that is just for starters!
Perhaps one day a Poisoned Paranid you'll be,
Perhaps another a Tormented Teladi.
Work of Aldran types can soothe many woes,
That's just the way the X-Universe goes!
These and more await you soon,
Which I am sure must be a boon,
And yet beware! Watch your back!
For in ignorance all plots you may lack,

Hope you enjoy whichever start you choose. Apart from the afore mentioned custom I really wouldn't worry too much about which start you pick - all the main plot missions are available to all the different starts (bar custom and one unlockable start which has one of the plots already finished in it). Some get a little headstart (the Terran characters can start the Terran missions right away, the Argon one can start another mission right away) but that is about it.
Targ - Sorry, couldn't help it. When I read Aldrin / Aldran that song just leapt into my head. I was getting the full Monty Python style knights and lumber jacks dancing as they sang it. It was type something or end up singing it to myself all night.
